Been living here 40+ years the ninth precinct is not a helpful, not responding. The only thing they do it is hang around with the bars are because that's all we have in the neighborhood now just a bunch of bars went on top of the other one like there's no rules. Suburban moved into the city and that's what we got bunch of bars, drunk and disorder a lot of druggies from the suburbs and that's what we're into. Keep up the great work. read more

Never thought I'd find myself reviewing a police department, but after a series of thefts in my building and repeat trips to the 9th precinct to report them, I feel compelled to publicly sing their praises. Long story short: I live in NYC... I started to notice packages go missing from the lobby of my East Village apartment several months ago -- either my own package, or those of my neighbors (based the ransacked boxes left behind). At first I assumed there was a delivery problem, but after repeat occurrences as well as sightings of suspicious characters lurking around the building -- literally hanging out in the bushes out front, or standing in the lobby smoking cigarettes... Despite multiple complaints to the building's live-in super as well as the management company (shout out Gatsby Enterprises, your 1-star review is coming next), this issue continues to persist, with the most recent incident occurring about an hour ago... So here I am, writing a glowing review for the NYPD 9th precinct while sitting in the NYPD 9th precinct for my 4th time over the past ~6 months. While the fact that I have to be here right now is frustrating, I couldn't ask for better treatment and service. The officers, detectives and staff have been extremely helpful every time I've been in here -- even the times where I only had $10 worth of goods stolen (but wanted to file a report either way, to create a paper trail). I wrongfully assumes that filing these reports would be a painstaking process, but it's been quite the opposite: each and every time I come in, the team treats me with so much respect and takes my issue seriously, even though I'm sure they have much bigger fish to fry. I've never been made to feel silly or unimportant and I've consistently felt as though my safety was their top priority. While I hope others do not have to experience this business, I want people to know that they're in great hands if they do. I actually wrote the 9th Precinct a thank-you note last fall; a dog I was taking care of got away from me and ran into traffic; after several blocks he was hit by a taxi and severely injured. By the time I arrived at the scene of the accident, the police were there, and after some negotiation, loaded the dog and me into their cruiser and sped up 1st avenue to the Animal Medical Center (they weren't "allowed" to take him to the closer Fifth Avenue Veterinary Associates, for some reason.) Thanks to them, the dog is alive today and has made a miraculous recovery. Aside from that, the façade of the stationhouse has been used in many TV spots--prior to its renovation--including the opening credits of the 70s shows Barney Miller (which actually supposedly took place in the fictional 12th precinct) and Kojak. This is probably because there's a playground across the street, and that makes it easier for a camera crew to set up and get a wider shot. So, yeah, I've been arrested and sat in the holding cell; personally, I think you can't call yourself a New Yorker if you haven't had at least one brush with the law. read more

NYPD - 9th Precinct - The famous 9th Precinct building - Police Departments Near Me - New York, New York

A taxicab side-swiped my car last week on 1st Ave and this was the responding precinct. It took two calls to 911 to actually get a response aside from some guy named John who was in plain clothes and claimed to be from the precinct. Apparently he heard the call on the radio and (was bored enough and) came out to look around. Anyway, once they showed up, they were very clear in procedures and I was on my way very quickly. Special thanks to Officer Nuñez and whoever his partner was on the night of March 28, 2013. Also, my friends think I'm crazy that I checked-in on the Yelp app since I was close enough to the precinct to do so. They're considering staging an intervention. The NYPD is rude as hell. Most policemen are, actually. But not Detective Darren Oakes! Some asshole withdrew $900 from my account at the Astor Place Chase Bank in NYC (this branch sucks... apparently this sort of thing happens all the time here and Chase is horrible at cooperating...) and my claims to Chase were rejected twice so I had to go to the police to file a report. They were surprisingly helpful and (almost) everyone was pretty chill. I had this horrible image in my head about police precincts and mean detectives but that wasn't the case. Very interesting experience! Hopefully I'll get my money back soon................... read more

The staff was extremely helpful and made me feel like my case was important, even though it was a typical theft and I came to report it at midnight on a weekday. I spoke to Detective John McAuliffe who was very friendly seemed to really care about getting my stolen item back to me. After two months of not hearing back, I lost all hope. I spent a lot of money replacing everything that was stolen and just considered it a loss. Today, I got two calls and a text from Detective McAuliffe telling me that after all this time they found and retrieved my stuff and it is waiting safely in his personal office for me to pick up at my convenience! I've never has such a great experience with the cops (or anything actually) that I felt the need to write a Yelp review, but these guys really helped me tremendously. Before my Dad joined The NYPD, he spent 4 years in the Army during WWII parachuting out of gliders and was a sharp shooter. My Dad worked at the 9th precinct, on 5th Street & 2nd Avenue, from 1950 and retired in 1980. His entire 30 career has earned him more accommodations and medals then most of you ungrateful, ignorant, lowlifes can count. That 30 year span was during the most tumultuous and violent times in NYC history. He did it all and for everyone and anyone, regardless of race or religion. When he put that uniform on, the only color he saw was Blue. He started as a beat cop, then patrol officer personally getting to know each and every business owner, homeless person, trash collector, mailman, utility worker and civilian on his beat. He earned their trust and respect because he honored the badge, the uniform and the people above all else. He worked undercover( back then it was called plain clothes). He worked with a K9. He worked with ESU. But he always managed to return to the streets, his streets, his beat, because he felt he was more effective interacting one on one in an environment where the people felt safe. He had a reputation of being tough but fair. He treated everyone equally and proved himself to the community. He'd stop and play hoops in the park or buy ice cream for the kids. His legacy was the 9th precinct. No matter what I say or anyone else, haters is gonna hate. And like all of us, one day You're going to have to explain yourself to a higher power. I called the precinct on a Saturday afternoon for a friend of mine who has a squatter (a friend she let stay at her house), not wanting to leave and allowing 30 days to pass, he now has the law that protects him to stay at her house, not pay rent,and not leave. ever. Even change the locks on HER and have HER out on the streets. I first contacted the PSA police on 8th street and ave C... they have to be the laziest, rudest group of right winged, little swinging dic&%$ as they have NEVER offered help, advice or any service without a sarcastic and condescending smirk. We call the 9th precinct and pretty quickly were responded by two vehicles and very polite, courteous, helpful officers. They were fair and felt bad that the law works to protect someone like a squatter who is invading a home. He couldn't offer any legal advice, but was extremely helpful and most of all understanding. I was afraid that her barking dog would get shot in the face just for barking (I'm part of cop watch btw), instead the officer dropped to his knees for some sloppy K9 kisses. Turns out he's part of the animal rescue division of NYPD. As anactivist with several arrests, this was the one time I can say the cops were awesome. Thank you guys and be safe out there. I locked my keys in the car on 2nd Ave. last week. I tried to jiggle the lock open with a coat hanger, and had no luck. A Patrolman saw me struggling, and offered to give it a try. Twenty seconds later, bingo! I tried to give him a twenty dollar-bill, but he would have none of it. I saw him an hour later, snuck up on him, and not only tossed a twenty into his black-n-white, and two McDonalds happy Meals for him and his partner. If there was a negative rating it certainly would be more appropriate. Dealing with the community affairs officer here is a total joke. Half the time no one is in the office and they NEVER return phone calls. The noise situation in Tompkins Square Park has been a complete nuisance for the entire community living on the park and it seems the ninth precinct has no idea whats going on in the park most of the time not to mention how to enforce park rules. The officers from this precinct have, time and time again, proven with no shame to be hired goon squads. Last Tuesday I was with two friends strolling the lower east side, when we came to an abrupt stop. There was a mentally ill man, who clearly spoke no english, being threatened by a small man holstered with a gun and his mate. He was not aggressive, and was trying to sit on the bench which belonged to a business still open for the night. I assume this is why they were called, and why they saw fit to browbeat a destitute man with guns. Eventually the man walked away slowly, covering himself in trash bags to keep from the cold. Recounting this episode is shameful, these people are an embarrassment to any developed country. They trample their slogan of "Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect" onto the gutter. It was a bitter, freezing night. I can't imagine being homeless and without a place to go. I can't find a scenario in my head that can justify ten percent of their behavior. I wish I knew their names, so I could post their contentious mugs on the internet as a warning to other people. If you encounter a small, pale man and a taller one with slicked black hair, they might be the ones here in question. Call a lawyer immediately. read more

Tonight, two precinct 9 policemen talked reason into some jerks at the parking lot with such brilliant common sense and clarity. I don't know if it's training or upbringing or both, but I felt very protected in their presence, their confidence and humanity!! made me feel calm after a few hours of hysteria. while getting out of a cab to meet a old school buddy i notice my friend being helped by a group of folks ,as i approach him i notice he has some facial bruises and bloody lip. my friend was assaulted and robbed and had gay slurs yelled at him even though he is straight as an arrow. we were told to go to the local 9th precinct which is 3 blocks away , i really wanted to go to the nearest modells and pick up a 40 ounce bat and bash some skulls but my buddy calmed me down and we made our way to the police station . as soon as we walked in to the moment we left the police station we were pleasantly surprise with the professionalism of the detective who took all of my friends info and made it clear that finding these subhumans was high on his list. after my buddy filled out some forms and the nyfd paramedic patched up my friend who did not need stitches we decided to grab a bite in the area but first i just for a hunch needed to go by the local school yard first and see if the two menace to society punks were around and as soon we passed the basketball courts , my friend carefully whispered to me that they were drinking and smoking by the benches . we called 911 as soon as we were a safe distance away and less then 5 minutes 2 officers from the 9th precinct were slapping the cuffs on the scumbags . the sad part was that the creeps couldn't be more then 16 years old and from the conversation with the cops they are no strangers to the local cops . good job from the 9th precinct on the lower east side but next time anyone f#cks with my people the cops will not be needed. read more
