While away for a month, we came home to a major ceiling collapse in the 2nd floor bathroom of our brownstone. We called NYC A1 and the owner, Moe, inspected the damage and pointed out that a leak from beneath the wall-in shower on the floor above had thoroughly saturated the supporting ceiling joist over some period of time. Repair required a partial demolition of the shower above so we decided to bite the bullet and redo that bathroom completely. Moe gave us a fair price and stated the job would take 3 to 4 weeks. I am always dubious of timelines that contractors provide so I assume it would take longer. Moe's capable team showed up three days after I signed the contract. They were very professional, protected the rest of the house from the bulk of the construction with tarps and plastic sheeting, showed up consistently (including on two Saturdays), and worked full days. After purchasing our apartment we decided to remove a wall between our living/dining room and a bedroom to create an open-concept floor plan. This was our first New York renovation and we weren't exactly sure what to expect. We had originally spoken to several contractors that we found both by referrals as well as searching online. We decided to move forward with Moe from NYC A1 Home Improvement and are extremely happy that we did. He was extremely quick in providing a quote and explained all of the work that would be done and estimated how long everything would take. Additionally, he helped us to navigate through many of the permits that were required as well as insurance and other details that were needed by our building. The whole crew that worked in our apartment was always very polite and nice to deal with, as well as effective at what they were doing. When the work started, they did an amazing job protecting the rest of the apartment from the construction mess. They also took great care to ensure that we would still have access to our kitchen and bedrooms without having to go into the construction zone. Additionally, they were also very conscientious about cleaning up at the end of every day and ensuring that there was never a mess (even though they were doing demolition work!). His subcontractors were also prompt and he ensured that when complications with our HVAC occurred, they found optimal solutions and went above and beyond to ensure that any extra work that had to be done in other parts of the apartment would not create an uncomfortable situation. Within the original time estimate, the work was completed and we couldn't be happier. No shortcuts were taken and they ensured that everything was done properly and to both our and our architect's expectations. Additionally, his original cost estimate was extremely accurate. Hired Nyc A1 for a kitchen and bathroom renovation that cost over $60,000.Moe had no idea how to apply to my building Architect for project approval, and we had to hire an Architect to write the application. That cost $3500 and caused a huge delay. Moe used an unlicensed plumber to do all the plumbing work for both the kitchen and the bathroom. My super confirmed that the plumber was unlicensed. Upon completion of the work, water backed up into the shower body, causing flooding and damage, which I had to pay another plumber over $1000 to fix. The water pressure between the hot and cold handles in the bathroom sink is completely uneven as shown in below photos.Hot water barely flows out in bathroom sink. The kitchen cabinets he installed are falling apart.The water pipes under the kitchen sink leaked and flooded the cabinet under the kitchen sink. Had to pay my super $500 to fix that. Had Moe and his team install a wall and closets, and move an electrical switch to close off a loft space in our condo unit. Moe was extremely responsive. When we first called to get a quote, Moe stopped by later that day to look at the space. He wore a mask and took off his shoes when he came by. We received a few quotes and Moe's was in the same range, but his time estimate was lowest. The crew that came was very good at prepping the space with tarps and paper to prevent dust from getting all over. The crew were all very professional and pleasant. Moe stopped by at least once a day, and would check in with you for feedback on layout/design, etc. There was a closet door that wasn't ready with the rest of the work, but Moe and his crew had this ready and replaced within a week of finishing the rest of the work. Outstanding, hardworking, responsive, & thorough. My landlord lets me take care of my apartment like I own the place so I'm catching up on some deferred maintenance. This time it was replacing window screens & revarnishing the front door. My landlord loves this door. He told me the story of where he bought it 30 years ago. When I suggested painting it, however, he was aghast. Unfortunately, it had been at least a decade since anything had been done to it. That's a lot of sun damage. Sought out a bid from Moe after reading these amazing reviews. We needed to have our whole bathroom ceiling ripped out so that an HVAC system could be replaced. The bathroom is floor to ceiling tile, recessed light, fan, glass tile floor etc. We were very worried about it being damaged in tear out. Moe was one of three quotes we got and he was 1/2 the price of the midline quote and 1/3 the price of the high end quote (sorry to blow up your spot, Moe). He was able to coordinate work with the HVAC person, knowing that we currently had no heat in our apartment. He was SUPER available by text for questions or scheduling. The team who was here was professional and considerate. They kept everything as clean as possible, damaged nothing and honestly left the ceiling looking better than it did originally. I needed backyard reno work and a little roof fixer upper. Heard about A1 Home Improvement from a friend so I gave them a try. I was a bit skeptical at first because I usually go to Abul Home Improvement or Amin Home Improvement, but at this time both were busy and was referred to A1 as they do competitively priced work. The individual I spoke with, Moe, was very helpful since I had next to no idea what I wanted other than cementing the backyard and doing a new roof. He showed me some of his previous work and gave a good sense of the price range, style and the time frame. More or less it all fit what I was looking for so I went with them. They're currently working on the project now. As of this writing, I have to say the work is coming along better than I expected (see pics). Then they grouted all my tiles in the kitchen. Bought a Kohler faucet but when there was a missing piece for installation, they went out to buy that missing piece, again free of charge. We hired NYC A1 to redo our entire apartment, including gut renovations of the bathroom and kitchen, moving a closet, redoing the hardwood floors, replacing light fixtures, etc. It was an ambitious project, and we are thrilled with the result. Moe and his team's work was excellent--we really appreciated their attention to detail, they went above and beyond to get things right. They have a high degree of "finish", and didn't call a component complete until it was polished to a high standard. They were flexible as we encountered hiccups in the process, either with sourcing supplies, or when we encountered surprises inside the walls. Communication was sometimes an issue, but as we got into a rhythm on the work, we were generally on the same page before a particular component was initialized. Moe was able to accommodate our vision, and provided useful input and insight where appropriate. This was particularly useful in a century-old building where nothing was level or square. I've been working with him over the course of the last month and a half and he was kind enough to do all work over the weekend because our organization runs during the week. I was nervous to pick out a contractor and had two quotes given by other contractors before I contacted Moe. He was the kindest, most professional, and gave me the most reasonable price of the 3. At one point during construction there was a misunderstanding of what we had envisioned and what was actually built. Moe fixed the issue that included taking down and building a new wall with no extra cost at all. During construction there was an electrical issue in an office they were not working on, and Moe happily fixed it after I had asked if his electrician would be on site and could help in fixing it. Amongst all the contractors I reached out to, I am glad I decided to do business with Moe and his team. I hired Moe to install a ventless washer/dryer combo into a closet (connecting the water lines), do electrical wiring work, swapped out the electronic outlets, and paint the apartment. Moe offered excellent customer service - he is highly responsive via phone and text at all times and took the time to explain in layman terms how he and his team planned to renovate my apartment. He has many years of experience in the NY real estate scene and shared insightful advices and tips on what I should be prioritizing in my renovation project. This is a long overdue review. Moe and his team fixed a leaky shower that had been causing problems for YEARS! Moe was quick to come out to assess the situation, provided a fair and honest quote, and was extremely communicative and upfront throughout the renovation. He really went above and beyond to make sure the work in the bathroom was top quality. He completely removed the former shower, relaid cement, re-waterproofed, and retiled. Not only was he helpful in overseeing the work itself, he also helped to connect me with a great tile and grout shop and provided valuable input on the best tile to prevent future issues. However, all this may have been provided by any contractor. Two aspects of my interactions with Moe really set him and his team apart: 1. Before starting any work, they protected the surfaces and closets not only in the bathroom, but in all areas that could potentially be affected by the work. They protected our closets from dust and our walls and floors from scrapes. They were also sure to do a deep clean of the area when they finished, so our apartment was left in even better condition than when they began the project. 2. Our shower has a marble bench that had to be removed as part of the project. I was very nervous the marble would crack leading to substantial additional costs. Moe said they would do their best to ensure the marble didn't crack, but he couldn't make any promises. Totally understandable. Lo and behold--when the crew went to take the marble slab out, it cracked right down the middle. I was super disappointed. However, not only was Moe upfront about the issue, but without me even asking, he also offered to replace the marble piece out of his own pocket! This was NOT part of our original contract, and he had specifically said he couldn't promise the marble would remain intact. I was absolutely bowled over. Finally, when we weren't totally satisfied with the way the new marble slab was sitting against the wall of the shower, his team came back and added some wainscoting that made the bench even more attractive than before. He really went above and beyond the terms of our formal agreement to make sure we were satisfied. Oh, and of course, our shower hasn't leaked a drop since Moe and his team did their work (and it looks great to boot!) I could not recommend Moe more highly and would absolutely contact him for any future renovations. read more

There are few things most people need trust worthy, Someone to take care of your needs so you can live a semi carefree life. Such as a Lawyer, Car Mechanic, Accountant, Doctors and a General Contractor. I've been looking for a contractor every since I purchased my house couple years ago. I've hired people that was referred to me by friends and family, and ones that leaves their business cards in my mailbox. They all have the same problem, they suck at the job or they lie about the price and the job always end up costing me a lot more. I was looking for someone to do home improvement on the exterior of the house and I searched on yelp for all the contractors that had reviews. I must have contacted over 10 companies to give me a estimate for the job. In the end I choose A1 because when Moe came over he did not try to up sell me on additional work that I do not need done, he was very patient in explaining what kind of work he will be doing and what is the pros and cons of such work. not 1 out of the 10 contractors that came over did that for me. they all wanted to do the work their way or they try to up sell me. I am very satisfied with the completion of the job and I noticed the workers was very careful on my house to not damage other areas that was in the way of the job. I think I just might had found my trustworthy general contractor to take care of my property. I would 100% recommend Moe from A1. We used NYC A1 on our full house reno over 1 year ago (a bit under 2 years since reno completed). I will say, the actual renovation process was bearable and Moe was very responsive and easy to communicate with. Very reasonable and easy going guy. However, I will likely not recommend using this company, and at the very least, recommend with some caveats and reservations. Because this was a whole house reno, subcontractors were used, and apparently, SUBPAR subcontractors were used. There have been issues since the renovation was completed, and there was some response by Moe to fix things, but over time, that response diminished, to ZERO. Some issues were small, some were big, but what really prompted this review are the current problems I have to deal with. I had a new mini split AC system installed in my home for multiple floors, and literally every single floor has been experiencing issues. Last summer, one unit on the main floor was leaking into my wall, and after reaching out to Moe and with no response, my husband attempted to open up the wall and remedy the situation. This was less than 1 yr after reno was completed. I thought Moe would respond at the least, and provide some insight as to what was wrong or who we can reach out to for help. It's not as if I was requesting he fix the issue for FREE, I simply wanted some guidance. No response, whatsoever. Fine. My husband "fixed" the problem. Then this summer, the unit starts leaking AGAIN. I reached out to Moe once more, via text, nicely and just asking for advice. No response. Again. My husband had reached as well. No response either. I finally had to reach out on my own and find someone to come assess the issue and repair the unit. Turns out, one of the drainage pipes was installed improperly, at an insufficient angle, that is basically useless for draining, and therefore liquid backs up and leaks into my wall. My interior wall had to be opened up and patched. Time, effort, money wasted. On a new mini split system, under Moe's watch. Then my basement units started having issues; and it turns out, there is an issue with the condenser and also a coolant leak somewhere in the system. Once again, TIME, MONEY wasted on a new mini split system, installed under Moe's watch. And finally, now my 2nd floor units are not working. Not sure what is going on since it just happened today, and I am going to have to hire someone to come and assess the situation again. Once AGAIN, TIME, MONEY, will be wasted. My frustration lies in clearly poor work by the sub contractors, and mostly, lack of response by the owner. I had expected at minimum, an acknowledgement and some support. To be truthful, I thought I had encountered a contractor that I would be able to establish a relationship with for future work and to recommend to friends and family. I understand the value in finding good people to work with; even if it is at a cost. However, I feel I may have been mistaken in this situation, and unfortunately, don't think I will work with this company again. Perhaps my experience is the exception, but for anyone considering this company, best of luck. read more

Moe and his team are simply the best. Good people and good vibes. Our upstairs neighbor had a hot water heater failure causing it to rain hot water into our apartment for several hours. The damage required us to redo the entire floor, ceilings and walls of nearly the entirety of our 3 level apartment, including 3 bathrooms. It was a massive amount of damage and an incredible amount of stress for our family. A gut renovation is stressful even when well planned for, but an unexpected project of this magnitude is infinitely worse. We began interviewing several contractors, 4 in all, and 3 of them all did a great job of telling us how big the job was, all the stuff we were going to need to get for them, and how complicated it was going to be to schedule. Then we met Moe. My wife met him first, and just the way she described him and his approach sounded SO DIFFERENT from the other contractors. She told me how they walked through every space and the care Moe took in understanding the situation. I immediately scheduled a follow up to meet him. I was not disappointed. Mo learned the construction business from his father and leads a team of people including his younger brother. Walking him through my damaged home he got goosebumps describing the care and love he has for doing beautiful work. He was willing to work within our budget and it was an easy decision to hire him. For the next 4 moths Mo and his team rebuilt our home. Some highlights worth mentioning: --When Moe was unhappy with the leveling of our bathroom, he made his guys tear it up and start over again. Worth mentioning our home and bathrooms are not cookie cutter. We did everything high end and had some complicated tiling. His work was exacting. --When we needed Moe to interface with other contractors or insurance adjusters, he was always there and happy to represent us. --We used a highly opinionated interior designer who really challenged him to stay on the project timeline and he handled it with grace and aplomb. --When he thought we were making a design mistake he wasn't afraid to be consultative and shared his opinion. --When we came to the finishing phase there are always tons of tedious outstanding details that can drag a project on indefinitely. Mo, was always there within a day to address any lingering issues. Quite simply, after spending 5 months in our home, he became more than a contractor, he became a trusted partner and friend. These guys are the reason why people don't trust contractors! We had a very bad experience with Moe and his crew. We felt that the offer he made on the contract was intentionally misleading, giving him a lot of leeway to walk back on things that they were supposed to do. He told us that the work should take about two days and priced it accordingly. However, 4 hour after his guys arrived, they said they were finished. We were shocked. They only did half the repair they were supposed to do, and did not intend to keep working. After we had an argument, Moe agreed to give his a 30% discount and made it seem like he was doing us a favor. The next day, I sent him pictures of the half-assed job his guys did when they hurried to get out of here, and he reluctantly came to clean up after them, but nothing more. We were looking for someone to do a lot more work on our house, but started with something simple just to test the waters. Moe and his team renovated our new construction home, taking down 2 walls with electrical and HVAC moved, and also removing two doorways. We were very nervous, and got quotes from at least 10 companies. Moe was reasonable in his quote, and kept to that quote - even after we opened the walls and discovered a pre-existing issue. Moe worked calmly, found a solution, and finished the job - consulting us along the way. Moe was very professional in both his consultancy and execution - leaving the house in perfectly clean condition. I want to leave this review for Moe at A1. I can't say enough good things about his and his team. I had a somewhat complicated task of removing a built in desk area and opening up a wall to the living room. This was somewhat of a complicated task that many other contractors came and saw and then a week later said they weren't interested in taking on the project or wanted an astronomical amount of money. Moe came in and I could not have asked for someone to do a better job- here are some things he did: 1- Finished the project within 4 days (other contractors quoted 2-3 weeks) 2- Was super responsive and responded to everything within an hour and most of the time even sooner 3- Beat out his competitors on price, he charged me 3500, while other quoted me anywhere from 5-11 thousand dollars 4- Knew what he was talking about, shared his vision for what could be done with me to make the place look its best. 5- Installed a ceiling fan for free when I was more than willing to pay him for it. Like I said above, Mo is great, he is knowledgeable and takes his customer service seriously will have him back to re-do my kitchen and bathroom next. read more

We recently had Aousaf and his excellent crew (William, Rinaldo, and Marcus) work on multiple projects, including: remodeling one of our guest bathrooms, which entailed installing a difficult-to-match wall tile pattern, which was done perfectly; painting several large rooms, repairing and painting two ceilings; repairing and painting a large "popcorn" wall in our stairway which numerous contractors over the years assured us could not be done -- but his team accomplished this as well; installing new door handles throughout the house (a more complicated job than it might sound); refinishing and painting our garage door; and, finally, repairing leaks on our roof. The crew was always courteous, and always cleaned the work spaces at the end of each day. Our walls and 100-year-old floors were protected throughout the entire construction process. And all of the above was accomplished remarkably close to the originally estimated timeframe. What's more, Aousaf is extremely easy to work with, honest and obviously concerned about making sure we were pleased with each phase of the work.
