Nanataco has a lot going for it. It has plenty of seating, indoor and out. It has a bangin' salsa bar. It has a lot of cool options and combinations. The place was packed when I rolled up on the scene Saturday night after work. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, glad to have a little good weather before the impending storm. I left my beau at the counter to stalk potential empty tables outside like the city girl that I am. As I was standing like a gargoyle over a table occupied by a whirling dervish of crazed kids, I suddenly felt a pair of eyes on me. I turned to see a tiny almost toddler with a beard of chorizo smiling and waving coquettishly at me. If you know me, you know that I am not exactly a baby person, kids are cool but babies are a huge mystery to me. This baby was different. As we waved and flirted from a few feet away, it was clear to me that we were soul mates and before long she was reaching up for me to hold her (with full laughing parental consent) and we were dancing to Wham! together. Then my beau and I took the table next to this family and an instant friendship was born. Birds flew over us and cooed and a couple of swans hooked necks next to us in the shape of a heart. As we laughed aplenty, we also ate tacos. We ordered the fish tacos, lamb cheek, pork butt, and garlic beef. While the ingredients were certainly fresh, I was not "wowed" by the tacos. Don't get me wrong, while they were solid, and clearly prepared with care, it is clear that the fare is merely average, I do hope that Nanataco reads these reviews and works it out, because I think they have a good spot, and with some recipe tweaking, they could be really good. read more

This place hardly needs me to recommend it but I'm in the bathroom with a little time so here ya go. We went on a Mother's Day thinking most mother's would have brunched or gone some place fancyish like Applebee's so we headed here buoyed by personal recommendations of this place. Apparently a lot of other mothers did too. I'm not a real stand in line, sit down, wait for your fake name to be called but I made a well deserved exception here. The guy working behind the register was patient as we filed in and hemmed and hawed our orders pausing to get some clarification along the way. He was very helpful pointing out I probably didn't need to order salsa since they have a salsa bar to save me some money. And was totally cool (at least on the outside) with trying to explain to my daughter about dirty meats and why meat was in quotation marks leaving her to wonder if this was made out of humans which, technically speaking, is meat, though I haven't yet tried it. I ordered chicken, grilled veggie, (Oxford comma) and spinach and mushrooms tacos. The chicken was a little meh but the vegetarian tacos were the "Wassup!" For me. The toppings were so fresh and lively that I wondered if they had an urban garden somewhere. It made all the difference in promoting these to management. The guacamole was delicious and I mostly stuck with pico de Gallo from the salsa bar. The $5 margarita was stronger than any I've paid twice that much for. This place is loud and busy and we mostly just ate and listened to other people's conversation. And great for kids since it's already turned up to 11 in here. I'd maybe come at a less busy time like after the lunch rush. Some things affecting this rating are: 1) the salsa bar needs to be maintained and tidied up. It's kind of a free for all there and salsa just gets misdirected and you wind up with beans in your salsa verde. 2) tables need to be cleaned. We had to wipe down our table with single-ply napkins and it was still a little funky. 3) just a suggestion- maybe offer lettuce wraps for shells for low carb or paleo eaters. 4) just another suggestion-install an Icee machine but I recommend this across the board so just something to think about. All in all, these are some tasty ass tacos and you've given me a lovely memory to fall back on when I'm forced to eat at Applebee's. read more

A friend of mine tagged me on Facebook to let me know about this new taqueria, so I had to sample it as soon as possible... Within about 12 hours, I was sitting on the patio waiting for my chorizo nachos with a side of guacamole. Some may think Durham may not need another taco stand, but I say there can never be too many. And Nanataco adds another layer of nuance to the quick(ish) Mexican options in the area. They offer tacos (duh!), burritos, nachos, tortas, salads, and quesadillas with several "standard " proteins, which include beef tongue and chorizo, as well as some "dirty" meats, which include duck confit and pork belly. The dirty meats incur a slight upcharge. The nachos I had were quite tasty. The order wasn't huge, but it was sufficient, and the chorizo was a excellent choice. They also have a salsa bar with three or four salsas, cilantro, radishes, onion, and pickled peppers and vegetables. My main concern was the fact that it took quite a while to be served, even though there weren't many folks there. It also concerned me that I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone when I called earlier to see what hours they're open. Nanataco is now my favorite place to get Mexican food, even though it's a long drive to get there. Nanataco is a casual restaurant that serves quality food. When ordering, you look up at the chalkboard and choose what you want to eat. Then you go up to the counter to order. For lunch, I got a burrito. The burrito was amazing. The burrito with the garlic beef had so many flavors; there was a party in my mouth. You can also pick black or pinto beans. With the tacos, the beans are on the side. With the burrito, the beans are in the burrito. I got pinto beans, which went well with my garlic beef. We also ordered chips and salsa to snack on while waiting, but that wasn't necessary because the food came out so fast. If you are hungry between lunch and dinner and you really feel like you need a snack, go to Nanataco and order some chips. Nanataco has a unique salsa bar, which you can use on your chips or add to your tacos. The salsa is really fresh and tasty. I recommend the guacamole when ordering chips because guacamole isn't on the bar. If you are a Mexican food lover, then go to Nanataco because they have the best! read more

The cashier corrected me when I accused their food of being TexMex (after all this is NC), rather it's tacos for Americans (or as my Mexican friends would call it, white people tacos). Lucky the cashier was from Michoacán and was able to help me make some real tacos (minus cheese/lettuce add cilantro/onions/spicy salsa). Corn tortillas are good, I was told they were made in the back. It's difficult visiting from the west coast and getting a taco. You have hopes. It doesn't need to be the same, it just needs to be tasty, right? I was so excited when I walked in. C'mon, house smoked duck, fried oysters on some handmade tortillas? Yes please! They've opened up the space a bit with the patio and still have some outdoor seating that fights off most of the rain when it's heavy. So I found my seat and hit the salsa bar. Good selections, flavorful and fresh, with a good range of spice and texture. Got the tacos... gonna pretend they didn't put lettuce on it. I'm looking past this sacrilegious offense on the taco... it's a bit under seasoned. Just a little salt and they're pretty awesome. I don't like salting my food so much unless it's in my own kitchen, and you don't expect to need to with oysters and smoked duck. The tortillas are kinda the same way, they could use a little more love from the salt shaker and they mostly held up for the duration. Chips, on the other hand were perfect! I would definitely say that Nanataco offers a simpler, more restrained approach to Mexican food; if you're looking to indulge in rich, cheesy, over-the-top Mexican fare, you might want to look elsewhere. I ordered the taco lunch special: two tacos (I chose duck for my meat) that came with beans (I chose black), rice, and tortilla chips. The overall flavor was satisfying, but overall, unremarkable. The tacos were on the smaller side, maybe hand-sized; the duck was tender, flavorful, and given in generous portions. I sampled some of the grilled fish taco as well, and although the fish had an excellent smokey flavor, there was a noticeably small amount of it. The black beans, rice, and tortilla chips were pretty much the standard Mexican restaurant fare. There's a cute little salsa bar where you can go get dip for your chips! :) On a Saturday afternoon, Nanataco was quite busy, but not outrageously so. The line still moved pretty quickly, and our food was served within 7-8 min. The cashier was friendly, patient, and helpful (thanks for putting up with my very confused and disorderly fam!). This place is sort of authentic, they mos def have their own spin on things and it's a tasty good spin. I think I like it better than Chubby's and Cosmic. The location is sort of annoying as is the parking but I'd recommend this place to anyone. The Chil Releno albeit it not authentic it's better than authentic and local ingredients. The inside is cool and fun. The salsa bar is one of the best i've ever been to. Whenever I get asked about my favorite places to eat in Durham, Nanataco always makes the top of my list. They have everything a good restaurant should have: fresh food, cheerful employees, fun atmosphere, & unique food options -- crispy chicken livers or braised beef tongue, anyone? My go-to options are the Chipotle Cesar Salad topped with House Rotisserie Chicken or the Big Daddy Burrito. Both options will definitely leave with you a full, yet happy tummy. They also have a salsa bar with delicious pico de gallo & a spicy jicama slaw. In addition to the oh-so-yummy food options, the value is incredible and there is something for everyone (kids, vegetarians, big appetites, foodies, you name it). For my company holiday party, I used their catering service. They did not disappoint (I seriously just want to order those big pans of meat for meals throughout the week). It's always reassuring to dine at a restaurant that already has a ton of Yelp reviews. Nearly 300 opinions should give you a reasonable idea of what a place is about! I saw Nanataco while dining at the neighboring Q-shack. I love trying Mexican places so I knew I'd be back here one day. It's a very popular restaurant (a good sign), but unfortunately there isn't much parking. I came here on a Tuesday night to grab some tacos and we barely found a spot to park. There is a a rather large food and drink menu written in the chalk above the cashier. There is a special offer on tacos and craft beer on Tuesday nights, so we were lucky to stumble upon it. I chose the beef tongue, fried calamari, and duck flour tacos with a milk stout Duck Rabbit beer. In less than 10 minutes, a waitress brought my tacos along with some crisp corn chips. I've had their margarita before, but it wasn't to my liking. They also have a fridge stocked with Locopops! My favorite is the Mexican chocolate flavor. Nanataco is a great deal for your money, so if you're looking for food that will leave you full for the rest of the day while being on a budget, come here. The cashiers and waiters are nice and the service is usually pretty fast. They have a few large TVs that are likely to be playing major football or basketball games, so it has somewhat of a sports bar vibe. Definitely popular with college kids. read more

I used to be a Chubby's lover, but Nanataco has taken over as my go-to for less-than-authentic Mexican-ish food. The chicken liver tacos are pretty great (at least they were when I tried them as a special; they're now on the regular menu), as are the three dirty meats that I've tried - lamb cheeks are tender with just a hint of gamey-ness, hog jowls are similarly tender but with some veins of fat that you may or may not enjoy, and smoked duck is simply delicious. I also love the jicama coleslaw from the salsa bar. The jicama adds an unexpected textural twist - it's got the crunch and slight juiciness of apple without the sweetness - and just enough spiciness to be noticeable but not painful. I'm not a huge fan of their quesadillas. I think they're overly cheesey with generic, greasy, flavorless cheese. My boyfriend likes their burritos, though I've never understood the appeal of trying to eat something so overstuffed that you can't get a bit of all the components in each bite. Don't be upset if you think it takes too long to get your food made - they're assembling as quickly as they can in the back, and real food tastes longer to make than Taco Bell food! If you go during peak hours (weekend evenings, in my experience), be prepared to have trouble finding a table, though that may be ameliorated by outdoor seating that's available in nice weather. I recommend not going alone so that one person can wait in line to order while another can try to snag a table. read more

How did I live so close to this place a few years ago and never make it over here? All sorts of unique flavors of tacos. My favorite was by far the beef tongue. The duck taco was nice too- great flavor. Pork butt was delicious- I loved the smoky taste. Generous side of black beans and rice. The corn tortillas were flavorful. Our $5 margarita had a decent percentage of liquor (thumbs up!). Pretty fresh ingredients. No standard carne asada or al pastor taco meats (bummer). Many of my friends have highly recommended Nanataco and have been going for years and I was so pleased to finally be able to experience it myself this past weekend! There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and the decor inside isn't crazy (as some places in similar industries do). I ordered the 3x Tacos and in two of the tacos I had the Chiorizo and the other I had Garlic Beef. They were incredible and even was able to order them on corn tortillas (yay Gluten Free!) The tacos also came with rice and black beans in a little boat that was TO DIE FOR! I've not had black beans that were so tasty and flavorful in a freaking long time - and this is coming from a Cuban girl herself! Also, my girlfriend and I ordered guacamole with chips. I didn't realize it but my girlfriend said that I paid for the chips as well and was like $5 but what I saw on the menu was $1.50. I'm not upset by it because it was so good but just watch out as the sides come individually and I didn't realize that guacamole was separate from chips! Also, they have a free-serve salsa bar that have various levels of hot intensity salsas. They also include fresh cilantro and I lurrve my cilantro so I was thrilled! They've got a few screens with TV on and although they muted it and just had music playing (thank goodness), we were able to watch the World Cup and was wonderful! Nanataco is unique for a reason I can't quite put my finger on. While the selections are nothing different from the standard Mexican fare - tacos, burritos, quesadillas, etc. - on the spectrum of Mexican-American cuisine, the food, atmosphere, and overall experience feel a lot more like a Western dining experience. It's definitely not your traditional Mexican food, even though it is, if that makes any sense at all. Perhaps it's the wide selection of meats that Nanataco offers, which are most noticeably unique from other Mexican restaurants. Overall, for $8 to $9, you can get a lot of food, and, given that the majority of it is carbs, really full. I had enough leftover for a sizeable snack in the future. The food tasted good, and the meat in my burrito was great. The counter service was pretty standard. I won't say that I was impressed with Nanataco, but I was satisfied, and the uniqueness of the overall experience was interesting. read more

I have been a big fan of NuvoTaco since they first opened (and were. Asked Nana Taco). You get to pick from a wide range of meats/fillings for your taco and it's fun to try out different ones. Their nachos are also good and their chips themselves are super tasty. I personally love their grilled fish tacos which come with pico and mango as well as a tasty sauce. They are currently just doing to go service and it is super efficient. You order online and then when you arrive you park in one of the spots on the side of the restaurant and click on a link in the email to say what spot you are in. They then come bring your food out to you which is super awesome. They are also doing to go margaritas right now which is amazing as well as their margaritas are super good. read more

This is a really nice eatery and they do a lot of things right. The salsa bar is nice, but could use a much spicier option (something even spicier than the habernaro one). The main thing here is that you pick your protein and the delivery mechanism (taco, quesadilla, or burrito). All comes with chips. I found the burrito to be the least interesting. It was a bit under seasoned and dry. The quesadilla option was the best choice. They also have a good drink selection. Overall, this is a fun place but the food won't blow your mind. Feeling hungry and having an hour to kill before a night event at my school, I headed to Nanataco on a weekday for an early dinner. As others have noted, the parking situation here is interesting. There are not many places to park so I'm not sure what happens when it's crowded. Luckily, on the day I was here I had no trouble finding a spot and I headed inside to check out the menu. They had a variety of Mexican dishes including tacos, quesadillas, tortas and burritos. I had tried Nanataco at a friend's party before, but this was my first time actually going to the place, so I decided to go with the taco plate so I could try three different types. They have a section of their regular meats as well as "dirty" meats (duck, lamb, beef tongue, etc). I went with two regular meats - chicken and garlic beef, as well as the pork belly (upcharge of $1 per taco for "dirty" meats). The plate was also served with rice, beans (pinto for me) and chips. They have a nice salsa bar with several salsas to choose from as well as jalapenos, radishes, pickled veggies and a few other toppings. I tried three of the salsas. I wasn't particularly crazy about any of them but I think the darker, smoky one was my favorite. I liked all three of the tacos, my favorite was actually the garlic beef - nice, garlicky flavor and tender meat. All of the tacos came with lettuce and pico de gallo, you could add guacamole, cheese or sour cream at a small additional place. Overall a pretty cool place with good food. I love tacos in genera, and am a huge fan of nantacos! They promote local food and beers and have obviously fresh ingredients. Laid back atmosphere...if only they had a bar id easily drink a few more beers. Great service and food comes out quick. Not so impressed with their calamari...would recommend sticking to the porks. Portions are large, overall pretty decently priced. Apps definitely don't needed as the entrees are plenty of food. read more

It was my coworkers last day at the office so we all came to Nanataco for one last lunch with her. We got there around 11:35AM which is perfect since there were only 3 people in front of us. I decided to try the burrito bowl (I got the lunch taco special last time) and asked if I can substitute meat for more rice and beans. The guy at the counter said they can replace meat with grilled veggies, which I was perfectly fine with. The burrito bowl came out relatively fast. For a burrito bowl, it was pretty good! The only down side is that compared to Chipotle, they don't put as much rice in there. They do have a separate rolling cart-like thing which holds different types of salsa from mild to really spicy. My favorite things form that cart has to be the fresh cilantro and diced onions. I took 2 of those little plastic cups of cilantro and 1 plastic cup of diced onions and generously applied them on my burrito bowl. Worth noting that they do also provide a small side of tortilla chips with the burrito bowl. For me, the dark red salsa paired best with the tortilla chips. It wasn't that spicy but it had a really nice smokey flavor. The portions for my burrito bowl was definitely generous. So much that I took half of it in a to-go box for another meal. The restaurant has several large picnic like tables (at least 4 of them) which makes it great for large parties. Pro-tip: definitely come early (before 11:40AM) if you want to avoid long lines. read more

I love this place! My fiancé and I came here for our first time today and were impressed by the service and food. The individual working the front was very kind and patient and upon hearing it was our first time, explained the ordering process without us even having to ask. He also gave us great suggestions! I did not like the fish tacos and didn't think the regular meats (chicken) were anything to rave over. I had the Al Pastor special one day - DEFINITELY NOT the Al Pastor you find in West LA shaved fresh off a rotating pile of meat, it was quite disappointing but what do you expect? It's Durham. Overall - it's a damn good taco place with lots to choose from. It's a little on the pricey side but you do get a lot for your money. Also, it can get pretty crowded if you go during a busy time. I came here with a group of friends last week for the first time and loved the interior! Plenty of parking which was a plus. You line up to order and then the waiters bring you your food. I ordered the grilled fish tacos with mango-jalapeno salsa with rice and pinto beans, and a few chips. The fish was fresh and I especially enjoyed topping them with various salsa from the free salsa bar, which not only has several types of salsa but also jalapenos. The portion size was slightly on the smaller size as I didn't feel completely full after I finished my food...or maybe I was just really hungry. The 2 others at our table each ordered 3 tacos: pork butt, rotisserie chicken, and chorizo. The tacos came with salsa and lettuce inside, and beans and rice on the side along with some chips. I sampled the tacos and loved the chorizo and rotisserie chicken tacos. the pork butt taco was just alright--the pork was slightly chewy/tough. All in all a great place to grab Mexican food though! Nuvotaco is such a treat! I was finally able to go this past weekend and it was worth the wait! This casual little spot has a walk up counter with a menu written on the wall. They have tacos burritos, and quesadillas but the main focus is on their fillings and meat. A great contrast to the normal mexican resturaunt where the just throw in ground beef. Their garlic beef, chicken tinga, and pork butt were all great staples. They also had some more adventurous options! I've heard the fried chicken livers are good but I'm not that brave! The rice and black beans were a perfect side. The best part of dining in was the salsa bar! Not only did it have salsas, but a variety of toppings like coleslaw, spicy cucumber, and pickled onions! With three tacos served with rice and beans coming in at under $8 you bet we will be back!! read more

Driving past this section of durham a few times i never knew this joint was here, probably cause that pathetic excuse of a BBQ joint is blocking the view of it. the menu had me at hello, Ive had duck tacos once like 3 years ago, and i still dream about the taste... so when i saw they had duck here i was like "oh, you already know what time it is." ordered the duck burrito with cheese and no salsa(the "salsa" is pico de gallo, which im not a fan of) and queso and chips, and wife got some fish tacos. they have their salsa bar by the drink machine and its got your pretty standard taco ingredients, i grabbed some of the 'hot' salsa (salsa rojos i think it was called) and waited for our food. Biting the burrito raw it had a very mild mix of flavor, nothing stood out and it all blended well, thats a good way to make a burrito according to my standards. the queso tasted like... well queso. adding the hot salsa to the burrito brought to exactly where i wanted it.. i was in heaven. however, the next time i come i wont be getting the duck. it was good but given the heavy smoke flavor it had i know if the carnitas is cooked the same way it would taste wayyy better than the duck. I didnt really like was the guy at the counter didnt bother to tell us that our food came with sides, I wasnt mad by any means but i had an overabundance of chips considering we ordered the queso&chips lol.. as for the sides, they were great. the rice was especially good, it had a lot of flavor but none of it was overbearing. TL;DR - this place is good, get tacos or a burrito, eat it, and be happy. read more

Love this place. I usually end up ordering the taco special at lunch (2 tacos, rice, beans, chips and a drink for like 7 bucks) but I recently discovered the chipotle caesar salad...I'm in love! I get it with half rotisserie chicken and half grilled veggies, and it makes for a very satisfying, reasonably healthy meal. Service is quirky but usually quite good. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to you. It's generally pretty speedy, even during peak hours. And it can get VERY crowded here, especially at lunch. Parking is definitely dicey - I usually end up parking on the residential street down by Nana's. read more

My God, money well spent . This place is very well managed, the interior is casual while also being very colorful and plush, perfect for a sunny day. The service here's also charming as well. But the best part about NanaTaco- the legitamacy where this great business rests on, is the spectacular food they offered. Come during lunch and grab the awesome lunch combo deal. Their nachos get 5+ stars in my book, but most everything else is a solid 4. :: Not sure what they do to them, but Nanataco's black beans made me start liking black beans because they're that good. :: The fish tacos are my favorite tacos, mostly because of the mango/jalapeño salsa, but I also really like the pork butt. Not really a fan of the chicken, but I'm also pretty picky about white meat chicken with no boney/fatty pieces. :: Beware of drinking their margaritas at lunch time on a work day...they're great, but they're strong. read more

I liked the layout and the location. I just wish the veg options were as extensive as the meat options. It'd be helpful if they had a dietary restriction menu- saying what was vegan and gluten-free. The music was also too loud to enjoy a nice conversation- and they messed up my order- I'm guessing because the cashier couldn't hear me over the music. They also serve sour cream in the black beans which I didn't see listed as an ingredient on the item I ordered. read more
