Nuvotaco is such a treat! I was finally able to go this past weekend and it was worth the wait! This casual little spot has a walk up counter with a menu written on the wall. They have tacos burritos, and quesadillas but the main focus is on their fillings and meat. A great contrast to the normal mexican resturaunt where the just throw in ground beef. Their garlic beef, chicken tinga, and pork butt were all great staples. They also had some more adventurous options! I've heard the fried chicken livers are good but I'm not that brave! The rice and black beans were a perfect side. The best part of dining in was the salsa bar! Not only did it have salsas, but a variety of toppings like coleslaw, spicy cucumber, and pickled onions! With three tacos served with rice and beans coming in at under $8 you bet we will be back!! read more

My God, money well spent . This place is very well managed, the interior is casual while also being very colorful and plush, perfect for a sunny day. The service here's also charming as well. But the best part about NanaTaco- the legitamacy where this great business rests on, is the spectacular food they offered. Come during lunch and grab the awesome lunch combo deal. Their nachos get 5+ stars in my book, but most everything else is a solid 4. :: Not sure what they do to them, but Nanataco's black beans made me start liking black beans because they're that good. :: The fish tacos are my favorite tacos, mostly because of the mango/jalapeño salsa, but I also really like the pork butt. Parking is a pain in the a** but the food is good and cheap. People have already talked about the tacos and burritos, etc. so I'll just say this: 1. MEXICAN CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE. Thick and delicious and flavored with cinnamon, a must try at only $3. Only complaint is that the straw is too thin. 2. FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. Nice and crispy, and triangle shaped, surprisingly. Quite good, wasn't sure what the price ended up being, I think about $5. Not sure if worth it considering the main dishes are only $7. Tasty, but not mind-blowing. The place was packed ...line out the door. Parking is atrocious. Had to find a side street to park on...hopefully my car would be there when I returned. Ordered the shrimp 3 tacos, flour shells, guacamole on the side and a margarita. Shrimp has good flavor... wished they would have cut /chopped them.... as they were pretty big. Guacamole was surprisingly good. Meal came with beans....wasn't my favorite. Margarita was not to my liking... bit too much lemon juice. I would really give it a 3.5 stars if it was an option. Service here was great and the staff was very friendly. The food was fresh and executed perfectly other than the alpastor taco meat was a lil hard and dry for our taste. I've been dragged here 5-6 times over the past six years by different folks who keep telling me either 'it's gotten way better' or 'you just didn't order the right thing' but every time I eat at Nana Taco, I feel like I've been duped. The prices are quite high which is sort of to be expected considering the alleged quality of the ingredients and there's very little pretense that it's an actual taqueria, but every time I've been there it's been so wretched -- tongue that was burnt, a vegetarian taco with like four mushrooms and a token piece of spinach in it, some of the blandest chorizo I've ever tasted and a DIY michelada that smelled like ammonia and tasted just as bad. If it wasn't for the salsa bar that's pretty well stocked and the usually nice service, I would give Nana Taco one star. I do feel like I have to add that my family have been going to Nana's for decades and my wife and I love Nanasteak; it's just that Nana Taco is garbage. It's less than a ten minute drive to Tacos Nacos, El Cuscatleco and Azteca Grill and a less than 15 minute drive to Guanajuato and La Superior so just go there instead. read more

One of my favorite places to eat and to bring guests in Durham! It is absolutely NOT authentic Mexican tacos and burritos -- BUT, they're incredibly delicious! My favorite meats are probably the least expected ones - the fried calamari and the chicken liver tacos! They both come drizzled with a spicy, creamy sauce that offsets the fried aspect of both. They're incredible. I also love their simple rotisserie chicken; it's super flavorful for what it is! Their rice is a little bland, but I don't go there for the rice :) Fair warning - their nachos are COVERED in cheese, and are highly addictive! Also, their margaritas are very well priced, potent, and delicious! During popular lunch and dinner times, the line can be pretty intimidating, but it moves fairly quickly and the kitchen staff is incredible and gets the food out very quickly. read more

Unless you live somewhere where you can walk, it's a hassle to get to, but it's very worth it. I grew up in California and am used to getting amazing Mexican food from taco an burrito stands that look like prisons from the outside. There are plenty of good places in the triangle where you can get a decent Mexican meal in the often dicey order by number system that so much of the southeast US uses, but there is no replacement for a good taco joint and this is a good taco joint. You can get a variety of meats. You can get carne asada that actually tastes like what I'm used to getting in the southwest. You've gotta bring your appetite because you're going to want to try half the menu. Just, you know, good luck finding a place to part that hasn't posted 10 to 12 signs about how they're going to tow you if you park there. read more

I've been stalking Nanataco on insta for awhile. I'm a drink connoisseur so their pics of frozen Jamaican mojitos had them in my top places to go asap. Not only did I love that drink as well as their AFTERBURN marg (the BEST spicy marg I've everrrrrr had) but their nachos with garlic beef were to die as well as their salsa. Usually I'm not a fan of chunky tomatoes in salsa but whatever they do with theirs is ON POINT. If you're new here ordering is stress, but all of the guys from the ones you order from to the ones who bring you food are super sweet and make up for the chaos. The vibe is always super chill and the music is always rockin (90s alternative wins me over any day). I am forever a Nana believer ;) read more

Never had anything less than a great meal here. Reliable, affordable, clean, friendly... NanaTaco has it all. I love the more adventurous offerings--chicken liver, squid, tongue--as well as the more conventional pork, beef, and chorizo. Beans are excellent, and the condiments bar offers plenty of options. Great beer selection as well. Parking, however, is a bear on busy nights, which means most nights. It's a serious problem, but the food is so good it's worth the hassle of circling the block repeatedly. read more

This place stays busy! We came through trying to feed my pregnancy cravings and we're envelopes by the chill atmosphere of the patrons and staff. Lines may seem long but they get your order and food out to you pretty fast. I appreciate the woman that took our order because she took the time to explain the menu and help us narrow down our decisions. Mexican food + authentic menu + heeps of food = make a visit. The most popular item is probably the 3 tacos entree served with rice and black beans or pork pinto beans and chips. There's lots of different meats to choose from but my favorite was the crispy oysters (and I'm not even a huge oyster person, let alone seafood). I do hope to try one of the dirty meats next time like the duck or crispy chicken liver (disclaimer: there's an up charge). I'd highly recommend trying the spicy Mexican chocolate milkshake (so good and super cheap too). Next time I want to try the roasted plantain milkshake. The prices are generally on the cheaper end. The summary: Food is good, parking is terrible. We have come here a few times before this. All in all the food is tasty but we've noticed if you want to have lunch at a standard lunch time or dinner at a standard dinner time you may have to wait for parking. I love the tacos, specifically the fish. The kids quesadilla is a great size. Fills up our 8 and 10 year old. The salsa bar is nice too. But if you are like me, getting frustrated with parking can set the tone for the rest of the visit. To remedy this, meet a friend early afternoon for a margarita and stay for a good dinner. But the price doesn't really match the quality/type of food and the parking is a major headache. You know those awesome food trucks you find in places like Austin or LA that serve up tiny gourmet tacos that manage somehow to be both delicious and inexpensive? Nanataco is the brick-and-mortar version of that. The venue is homey, with warm colors throughout and sparse table-top seating; things do get packed around meal times but the line at the counter moves fairly quickly and the service is great. You can't evaluate a Mexican restaurant without first assessing the chips, queso, guac, and salsa first, and Nana does 3/4 of the four well. The chips are standard (thin and crunchy), the white cheese is creamy and rich, and the guacamole is smooth and refreshing -- although I usually prefer mine with more lime. The salsa is pretty bland, however, although there is a separate self-serve salsa bar. Wash your starters down with one of their margaritas, which are excellent. I personally recommend the spicy one. I usually go for 2-3 corn tacos, which come with rice and beans. I've had the fish tacos a few times and I find them a little tasteless, although they come with a tasty cold mango salsa. The grilled shrimp tacos were absolutely delicious with a nice charred flavor. The real stars on the menu though are the "dirty meats," specifically the smoked duck and pork belly, which are savory and indulgent. I haven't tried the chorizo or pork butt yet, but my friends say that they're a little dry. All in all, Nanataco is definitely a place that's worth trying again and again. read more

I came here with a friend and ordered the 3x tacos - pork belly, grilled fish, and pork butt tacos. I'm taking one star off because the pork belly was a bit dry, but the other two tacos were delicious. It came with rice and beans on the side, which was plenty of food. The guac and chips were delicious as well. The environment was casual and comfortable, and I loved that they have a salsa bar on the side for you to get your own pico de gallo and salsas. The pork butt, pork belly, and the ropa vieja were good. My grilled fish was burnt and dry. My wife didn't care much for the chorizo. Since it was our first time at Nanataco, we were offered a free guac and chips. We really appreciated the offer. The guac was fresh, but needed some acidity (lime). Abbie, a delightful and helpful cashier, informed me upon entry that this top rated taco spot is all about the "meat." The menu backs that up. There's a mix of common (fish) and exoticish (duck) taco fillers. Other interesting options included calamari and fried oyster, the latter being sold out when I arrived late Sunday evening. I got a taco plate to experience the popular beef/ropa vieja (sp) and duck offerings. My review begins here. When the food came out, I was a bit underwhelmed by the presentation--dated plastic baskets, random chips with my tacos and meat buried beneath far too much lettuce, tomato and cheese (I was asked if I wanted cheese and sour cream and I opted in). Still this pile up took away from what was to be the star of the show. With each bite, I had to struggle to taste the meat. The duck was a little dry but interesting. Abby was spot on about the beef--tasty indeed. On my plate were also rice and pinto beans and they could've kept that in the back. The beans lacked direction. The rice was just a heap of rice. I wasn't even tempted to eat it. I also tried the chorizo queso. It was just ok. Agreeable. Not fantastic. In the end, the experience was positive but not remarkable. When dinner was over, my date asked if I wanted to have a sip of his spicy Mexican chocolate shake. Now, that was phenomenal. I'd come back for that. read more

NuvoTaco is bomb! The extent of choices on the menu leave you wanting to come back for more. I ordered a house margarita ($5) and three tacos with rice and beans on the side. It was so much food, a little too much for one sitting, but that's always a plus. The margarita was cheap and delicious. They had other optional margaritas and a variety of craft/domestic beer. Next to where you pick up food, there is a station of toppings and salsas. The restaurant was packed on a Thursday night and seating was very minimal. The runner asked someone behind the take out counter if she could give him a sour cream, she looked at me, sour face, hesitated and slammed a sour cream down on the counter and yelled next time it will be 50 cents. Now while I was standing in line I saw other patrons ask for items, no problem, no sour look, no mention of extra cost. The difference they were all white. This is the new Durham. My family loves Tex-Mex / Mexican food... We have our faves and also continue to try other places. I had the chorizo fondito. It was meh. Good, not great. Could have been hotter (spicy) and more flavorful. My son had a quesadilla (steak I think). That's his "go-to" and he usually is happy at most other restaurants. For some reason, he didn't enjoy the flavor or combination of flavors. Both our dishes were acceptable, but nothing to get excited about. However, my daughter ordered a kid's cheese quesadilla, and it was atrocious. Extremely small and almost ZERO cheese. If it would have been $2, I'd have still been disappointed, but it was $6.25! Same with the other two dishes. Simply too high-priced for average food. Won't be back. read more
