My personal favorite is the fried shrimp tacos, do yourself a favor and try them and thank me later :) Right now they are only offering to go orders. NanaTaco is awesome. We went on Cinco de Mayo so naturally there was a line. Not a problem as that's usually a good sign when it comes to food. This was no different. I will say that they have a weird system with some of their menu combos where you can possibly end up paying more for the same menu items depending on which combo you choose. I ordered fish tacos which came with two tacos, but one of my friends ordered a different combo and was essentially able to get three fish tacos with all the same stuff that came with mine for less than what I paid. Just double check to make sure you're not overpaying! Other than that I really enjoyed all of my food - the fish tacos and the salsa were delicious, as were the black beans, rice, and chips. And if you go you've got to save room for their milkshakes. The roasted plantain by itself is delicious, but as some other reviewers have mentioned, try getting half spicy Mexican chocolate and half roasted plantain. read more

I ordered the lunch special 2 tacos, with the dirty meat option (pork belly and smoked duck) it was very good. The duck was okay, great flavor little dry, that pork belly was on point though. Wife ordered burrito bowl with the house rotisserie chicken. Let's have a moment of silence for the chicken......... Because she killed it. She allowed me to have one bite and it was very flavorful. I would order that next time. And there will be a next time. They have house made pico that was pretty good, not too hot. My grilled fish taco was a sizable piece of fish garnished with mango salsa, cilantro, and came with a lime. The beef tongue was sooo tender and very flavorful. Too good, too good. I enhanced my tacos with salsa verde, pico de gallo, and Cholula. +EXPERIENCE+ The restaurant was very crowded--lots of people ordering takeout-- but my party of three managed to find a table. Can't go wrong with a good taco! We like to go on Tuesday because they have deals all day(taco Tuesday). Around that time it's pretty busy so please be patient. They have a lot of options and the food is always hot, fresh and delicious! I usually order the fish tacos and it's always consistent... full of flavor! It comes with three tacos, rice, beans, and a drink! They have the best queso!!!!!! My husband likes to order a mixture of tacos, he loves their dirty meat menu! I was overall disappointed in my experience at NuvoTaco after hearing many good things about it. Wow this place was packed for a Thursday night but the kitchen kept all the orders moving along. The tight, tiny and packed parking lot was almost impossible to get into. When you get inside you wait in line to order your food and the menu is on a chalkboard above the counter. Then they will bring your food to you. The staff was nice and kept things moving along. The prices seemed fair on everything except the guac which is more expensive. The food was really the disappointment for me during my experience. First, I didn't see it mentioned but the entrees all see to come with chips which is nice but not well listed so my husband and I ordered chips and salsa as an app. There is also a free salsa and toppings bar next to the counter, all well that we could have had it for free. But when we got the salsa it was very chunky pico that really didn't taste that good. I ordered the 3 chicken Tacos and while they were a huge portion (so much meat you can't really even pick it up without spilling) it was very dry meat (despite being drenched sauce/marinade) and just tasted like the taco seasoning packets you can get at the grocery store. The crispy chicken liver was delicious and so worth it, but the other two meats were dry so I think it's worth paying a little extra for the Dirty meats. Atmosphere: Nicely decorated with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Parking is very limited, so hopefully that will improve with time. I ordered mine with grilled veggies (zucchini, squash, onions, & peppers). Taco trios come with (well-seasoned) rice, (meatless) black beans (vegans be sure to reiterate NO SOUR CREAM as there is a smidgen of sour cream on the black beans) & a handful of chips. If you would like cheese or sour cream on your tacos, it's $.50 extra. I ordered a single serving of guacamole. There's also a cold salsa bar where you can get accompaniments at various levels of heat. My personal favorite is the jicama slaw. The "cherry on top" is the Mexican Street Corn! SHUTCHOMOUF! My friend and I came in Thursday evening for dinner. We had to wait about 10 minutes to order (there's only one line), and the line grew steadily behind us. Their parking lot is small, but you could probably park across the street at the strip mall if needed. They have a variety of interesting protein options. I ordered the three tacos plate with pork belly, duck, and garlic beef. It came with rice and beans. The premium meats are an extra $1 each. The pork belly taco was my favorite! They usually have a salsa bar, but it was closed, so they included some pico with my food, but it was one tiny container. Probably my favorite Taco shop in Durham! You really get a bang for your buck with the lunch and dinner taco combo. I usually end up getting the shrimp, calamari, and a pork or meat taco. You will most likely leave very full, because along with your tacos you get chips, beans, and rice! They have an amazing salsa bar and the best $5 margaritas. My boyfriend usually gets the Big Daddy Burrito and ends up having to take half home because it is very filling! I gave this restaurant 4/5 stars becasue I usually crave a red meat taco, but I am not a fan of the garlic beef. I wish they had carne asada or another kind of red meat. Came here on a weekend while I was in North Carolina. It happened to be cinco de mayo and I wanted to eat some good Mexican food with drinks. Looked it up and decided to give it a try. When we got there it was obviously packed because of cinco de mayo however outside of the restaurant where the long line was there was a guy making house margaritas for $5 bucks. The environment itself is pretty awesome it has a great vibe and it's very clean. The guy making the drinks was very honest on what he recommended in the menu told us he has been working there since the restaurant opened which is 5 years and still continues to eat almost everyday from there. Instantly I caught his Mexican accent so I took his word for it because I'm really picky with food. It took a long time to order but when we did everything was so GOOD! Didn't even have the chance to take a picture of the food only the menu. I ordered the quesadilla with chicken which came with rice (option of black beans or pinto) chips and rice plus a drink. Also tried the torta with duck and the 3 tacos of garlic beef, chorizo, and pork butt. Man everything was so good! The options for the salsas was amazing everything was homemade! Came here for quick Mexican food! Be hungry when you come because portions are a pretty big. They have an extensive menu to pick from! Husband got steak tacos and I got the quesadilla with chicken. I wish I knew the quesadilla would be so plain..they do have a condiment bar but it has no guacamole, lettuce, or sour cream (all things that needed to be on there). It was so busy I didn't bother to ask. Service was quick and prices affordable. 4 stars for the above and the fact that all the tables were sticky and dirty. I've come here a few times after they changed their name and while overall it's tasty (not authentic), it's been a bit inconsistent everytime I go. Parking isn't too bad, there's a couple options to park, but it doesn't get pretty full. It can also get pretty busy during lunch time, but the line moves relatively quick. The first time I went the tacos were super juicy and delicious. I love the handmade tortillas and those do taste really authentic. The $5 margaritas also contain a good amount of alcohol for the price, so that in itself makes it worth it! However, the second time I took my family and ordered the same thing, the meat was really dry and almost unrecognizable from the first time. Overall, I will try to come again and hopefully it is more consistent and that they add more authentic meat options. read more

Casual, hip and trendy taqueria with counter service and an excellent outdoor patio that's in our most frequent rotation. Love the dirty meats and the excellent specials like hog jowl, fried or grilled shrimp, and fried oysters. They've got excellent margaritas, a salsa bar, and amazing queso fundido, so it hits all the must haves on your Mexican list, but in a much cooler Durham-feeling place. I'm talking colorful chalkboard menus, planter-bordered patios, and bright but slightly industrial interior. We LOVE to go here with friends and family on a weeknight or Sunday brunch time, and it's always bustling - so much so that parking in the tiny lot is at a premium, and you may have to circle the block a few times. People can get very incentive in finding spots. Highly recommend the oyster torta or the fried shrimp tacos, and the queso fundido is great for a group. read more

Came here on a Friday night around 6:30 and it was busy but not nearly as packed as when we left. Parking can get a bit sticky when they're crowded so just be aware. I got a margarita (delicious and only $5!) and 3 tacos: garlic beef, fried fish and crispy calamari. All three were delicious but the fried fish was my favorite. I ordered a garlic beef taco tonight and this photo shows what I ended up throwing away (like 97% of it). The center of the meat was too chewy and still pink in parts. The outside was dry. My girlfriend and I left with mixed feelings after our visit to Nanataco. We scored a parking spot right in front just as someone was leaving, which was great luck because everything in the area was packed. The inside of the restaurant was packed too, and we waited in line to order for 5-10 minutes. Luckily, we were able to find a table immediately after ordering though. The food was a mixed bag. I got a big daddy burrito, and we both agreed that it was awesome! Three meats plus cheese plus beans and rice, and they were all very flavorful. My girlfriend got 3 tacos (garlic beef, pork butt, chorizo) and they were pretty meh. The main issue was that the tortilla was lukewarm and the lettuce, pico de gallo, and cheese were all cold. The tacos were a little lacking in meat (which is an issue in and of itself), and that was the only warm part of the taco. So in the end, it was like eating a slightly below room temperature taco and not the best experience. I jokingly referred to them as "Lunchables tacos" after the meal because that's true what they reminded me of. The garlic beef was excellent, but all 3 meats were hard to notice because they were overwhelmed by the other ingredients in the taco. The rice and beans on the side were good but certainly nothing special either. All in all, the food was pretty hit or miss, and we definitely wouldn't come back at a busy line to struggle through parking and the line, but we might give it another shot when it's less crowded. read more

The place was packed when I rolled up on the scene Saturday night after work. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, glad to have a little good weather before the impending storm. I left my beau at the counter to stalk potential empty tables outside like the city girl that I am. As I was standing like a gargoyle over a table occupied by a whirling dervish of crazed kids, I suddenly felt a pair of eyes on me. I turned to see a tiny almost toddler with a beard of chorizo smiling and waving coquettishly at me. If you know me, you know that I am not exactly a baby person, kids are cool but babies are a huge mystery to me. This baby was different. As we waved and flirted from a few feet away, it was clear to me that we were soul mates and before long she was reaching up for me to hold her (with full laughing parental consent) and we were dancing to Wham! together. Then my beau and I took the table next to this family and an instant friendship was born. Birds flew over us and cooed and a couple of swans hooked necks next to us in the shape of a heart. As we laughed aplenty, we also ate tacos. We ordered the fish tacos, lamb cheek, pork butt, and garlic beef. While the ingredients were certainly fresh, I was not "wowed" by the tacos. I recently moved to the area from the NY/NJ area and was looking for a taco place to satisfy my cravings. A fellow student recommended I check out NuvoTaco and I'm glad I did! I ordered the lunch special, which is two tacos (you choose the meats), a side of rice and beans (pork pintos or veggie black beans) and a soft drink. I choose slow cooked garlic beef and grilled shrimp tacos for my order. I really enjoyed the shrimp taco, the combination of the spicy aioli and mango salsa gave it a very flavorful taste. The beef taco was a bit dry and lacked taste. I'm not sure I would order it again. All together my lunch special came out to around $9 with tax. A friend of mine tagged me on Facebook to let me know about this new taqueria, so I had to sample it as soon as possible... Within about 12 hours, I was sitting on the patio waiting for my chorizo nachos with a side of guacamole. Some may think Durham may not need another taco stand, but I say there can never be too many. And Nanataco adds another layer of nuance to the quick(ish) Mexican options in the area. They offer tacos (duh!), burritos, nachos, tortas, salads, and quesadillas with several "standard " proteins, which include beef tongue and chorizo, as well as some "dirty" meats, which include duck confit and pork belly. The dirty meats incur a slight upcharge. The nachos I had were quite tasty. The order wasn't huge, but it was sufficient, and the chorizo was a excellent choice. They also have a salsa bar with three or four salsas, cilantro, radishes, onion, and pickled peppers and vegetables. My main concern was the fact that it took quite a while to be served, even though there weren't many folks there. It also concerned me that I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone when I called earlier to see what hours they're open.
