Fast forward to today, and I am happily back in the city of Los Alamitos. One of the best parts about it is still having a nice, modern Chase right up around the corner. It's nice to walk in and be helped by such polite and professional employees. No really! Plus they have free suckers in the lobby, including the mysterious blue-flavored ones. The ATMs usually don't have a line, at least not that I've ever seen. So much nicer than the lines of people fifteen deep all cashing welfare checks back at the BofA in Gardena. I only have a few minor gripes about this location that are worthy of denying that coveted fifth star. 1.) The parking lot is somewhat of a pain in the ass. The parking spaces are all compact, and also angled, seeing as it's one-way only. Well, as any California driver can attest, people around here can't drive let alone park, so you'll often find cars all over the place and well over the lines. 2.) The driveway on Los Al Blvd is small and can barely squeeze two cars at the same time, and upon exiting it's borderline impossible to get across all the lanes if you need to make a left onto Katella. 3.) I always seem to have problems with depositing checks at the ATM. I'd say I'm batting .500 with the machines at this location as far as having checks spit back out. I'm to the point where I just go in whenever I need to deposit something. Still a nice Chase, and makes me glad I finally ditched Bank of America!

I've observed a decline in their services over the years, prompting me to gradually shift my funds to School's First Credit Union. The only reason I maintained my account was out of nostalgia, because my grandfather, who had a career in aerospace, has passed away. I visited the Long Beach branch after being assured over the phone that any location could assist me in resolving an account that had been written off, allowing me to restore it to good standing. While the staff member I interacted with at the Long Beach branch was kind, the limited assistance available was frustrating. When I attempted to reach the contact center again, a representative disconnected the call while I was trying to clarify whether another branch (this branch)could accept my payment, which would save me a long drive. It's disappointing to witness the decline of this credit union and to experience the lack of empathy throughout the organization, including the lending department, which seems to have no support for members who may be facing temporary financial difficulties. I've worked for many financial institutions over a 10-year span, and I know that they tend to value the wealthy clients/customers, so I'm not surprised they were interested in assisting me or providing above-and-beyond service. The ladies at the branch were aware that my account wasn't going to be reinstated. I was informed that the branch manager had the power to make that decision, yet Debbie acted as if she needed to escalate my request to someone higher up, which I suspected was untrue. I decided to play along with her and the associate who was assisting me. They led me to think that if I cleared my credit card balance, there was a chance of reopening my account, which is quite misleading, especially considering the current economic climate. All this took about 2hours to complete while my 4month old and 16 year sat in the car and waited for me to finish what should have been a pretty straightforward transaction. Having worked in various financial institutions for a decade, I understand that they often prioritize wealthy clients. I wasn't surprised by the level of service I received, or the lack thereof. However, I firmly believe that every customer, especially those who have been loyal for over 20 years, should be treated with appreciation and respect. The associate told me she would give me a call or I would receive something in the mail and gave me her card. Me being nice I won't include her name if she sees this review. She'll know I'm referring to her. Unfortunately, the phone call or letter has yet to be received, and I'm not surprised. While observing the branch, I noticed that the setup is quite inconvenient for older clients, many of whom struggle to use the virtual teller machine. This lack of consideration for those who aren't tech-savvy forces bankers to interrupt their work to assist clients who are having difficulty with the ATM. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.

My 86-year-old mother has been a member of SchoolsFirst since 2011 and each time she has visited this branch, all the staff have been very kind and accommodating. She has had to replace her debit card a few times and her original checking account was compromised, so they were able to help her cancel the old account and set up a new one with a new account number. The latest visit was with Bolivar, one of the credit union onsite bankers. My mother and I came to visit because her online banking account somehow got hacked and it reduced the functionality. Bolivar said the online account somehow had view only status so it was changed back to be fully functional again. He also suggested that the user name and password be changed, so we were able to get that done as well, using the credit union's computer. We had a very productive visit, and since my mother has some mobility issues, Bolivar was kind enough to help her walk to the front door before we left. Talk about going above and beyond! We will always have SchoolsFirst as our primary financial institution because we get 5-star service with every visit. Once again, if you qualify for membership, RUN don't walk, to the nearest branch and open an account.
