The worker immediately made a snarky face, laughed, and used disrespectful attitude towards us. She laughed and said "just tell me what you want in it" and i repeated back "no lettuce and no onions" she again laughed and said, "so just tomato then?" i responded with "no, theres also aioli and cheese which id like to keep." She scoffed and shook her head at us, and at this point I gave attitude back by saying "Were excluding lettuce and onion, its not that complicated." She rolled her eyes and shook her head. Back in CA, one of my favorite seafood dishes to eat was Crab Louis. Especially in the SF bay, this was a stellar dish to order and was never the same in other areas...until now. The day before we left the big island we finally made it to Number 3 for lunch. Im so sad it took us this long to find it, because it was by far the best lunch we had, and maybe even the best meal we had. We sat in the main dining room and were the only ones there for some time. I put in my order for the Crab Louis and hubby ordered the Fish and Chips, and we ordered a beer to go with it. Before the food arrived, they brought us rosemary popovers with raw salt butter which thrilled and delighted me. This was one of the best savory popovers I've had in years. After that, our entrees arrived. Hubby loved his lightly fried fish and the lemony tartar was super delicious and the fries were crisp and not soggy. My entree though was phenomenal, with lightly dressed greens topped with cherry tomatoes, asparagus, fresh crab and shrimp. I am still salivating over the flavor combinations and textures of this dish. I'd travel back to the big island just for this meal! Not to miss- solid 5 stars. read more

Came here for lunch after a round of golf at Hapuna Beach Golf Course. Saw the great yelp reviews so decided to give it a try. We walked right in and seated within minutes. They have removed a few entrees from their previous menu unfortunately. Our waitress was great and really kind. She brought us this hollow bread with a side of butter to start with. I really didn't like it too much personally . But great to taste as an experience. My husband ended up ordering a burger. I got the corn beef sandwich with a side ceasar salad. It was pretty good. Probably my favorite restaurant at the Mona Kea Beach Hotel. I wish we had discovered it earlier in the week during our stay so we could have eaten there more! We did eat there twice and I loved my Stir Fried Saimin so much I got it twice-I didn't know what it was initially-it is a Hawaiian dish (we love authentic ethnic food)-soy sesame oyster sauce, char siu (barbecued pork), bean sprouts, kamaboko (fish cake), egg and fried wonton. The first time I ordered it I ordered the extra shrimp because I didn't realize it already had pork and fish cake in it so I got a lot of food. It really was so delicious! Oh to start they gave everyone gigantic popovers-yum! Other items ordered were the BLT, Reuben sandwich, fish tacos (my friend didn't like them-she liked them better at the Hau tree}, and a Poke and rice that was super good. There was a waitress that worked there that was so so sweet and had the nicest smile-she took great care of us! Her name was Isabella. We went here for lunch almost every day. It is delicious, priced fairly and just awesome. We loved the Cajun Hawaiian Salad - way more filling than we thought it was going to be. We had it for lunch multiple times after we decided to give it a try. Also great: the poke & rice, and the fish tacos. Friendly staff, great open air seating, no need for reservations. There is also a cornhole set and ladder golf set that people can use. We liked to play a bit, with our drinks, before lunch. Everyone was fine with that. It's a great, chill place to eat. Food, service and setting are worth it. Lunch menu always has fresh fish and they recently changed the menu which is an improvement. The inside dining room has the most comfortable chairs and tables are nicely spaced. You can also have lunch outside in a covered from the sun area. read more

After 15 years of staying at Mauna Kea I can't believe we never tried Number 3. I guess it's because we always felt like it was a golf thing but it's not. The food is legit here. The view of the golf course is nice too. They served herbed popovers with butter but I feel they needed to be a bit more salty than they were. Either that or take out the herbs and serve them with strawberry butter. Yum. Anyway besides that everything else was perfect. I had the seafood slider trio that was delicious and served with fries. The Fritto Misto was delicious along with my husband's salad. I highly suggest you try this place out for lunch. It's such a nice atmosphere being there near the green. Surprisingly enough there was a bocce court and corn hole behind the restaurant that I didn't even know existed. read more

Named after Mauna Kea Golf Course's world famous 3rd hole, Number 3 is adjacent to the clubhouse and retail store. The food is fresh, local, innovative, and always ono (Hawaiian for delicious)! Some of our favorites include the gazpacho, the salads, fish sandwich, monte cristo sandwich, and burgers. Each meal is accompanied by a freshly baked popover. The iced tea is freshly brewed. Mixed with fresh lemonade, it becomes a refreshing "Arnold Palmer" garnished with a sprig of mint. Service is attentive, the setting is lovely, and -- after eating here more than two dozen times -- the food never fails to please. Number 3 is open for lunch only, from 11 am to 2 pm, and longer hours for drinks. read more

Situated on the 3rd hole st Mauna Kea Beach Resort, this is a very upscale casual dining experience. Sit outside if the weather is good and let's face it, the weather usually is. Inside does not have great airflow. The restaurant serves complimentary popovers with macadamia nuts baked in and soft butter with sea salt. The bowls of soup are enormous, the Cajun Mahi Mahi salad is fantastic, the gazpacho is cold and flavorful, and the Caesar salad is wonderful. It is affiliated with the golf course but it is just steps away from the main hotel and beachfront wing. Take note that they are only open (11:30-2:30pm) for lunch only. My complaint here is they should be open longer hours. Maybe think about a happy hour or consider offering dinner too. The view is just off the first tee and it's very casual but nice. We were here on several occasions and the food and service were consistently good. There are quite a few salads and sandwiches to choose from. They also offer fish tacos and a daily special. Not to mention fresh popovers. It was always easy to get a table here and never very crowded. There are also a few lawn games for the younger kids to play while you wait for lunch. Call before you go cuz sometimes they are closed for private parties. Lobster bisque was excellent but not what I expected - and that's a good thing. This is a very hearty dish with a lot of good flavor. At $18, it was pricier than a similar dish in downtown Kona. Wish there was an option for zero stars. Given this restaurant has one job, which is to serve lunch between 11:30 and 2:30, we expected this to be a quick event. 15 minutes in, we were asked for our orders. 75 minutes in, we received our food (not even commenting on the mediocrity and asinine pricing). 115 minutes into the event, we received our ticket (had two salads). There were numerous other tables in the same situation. My SO who spends an average of 200 nights a year in hotels was livid, called it his worst experience of 2018. Save yourself the headache and time and avoid! Hoping that between this review and the server's upward feedback to her manager of the zero tip she received, management receives the message to properly staff their restaurants. People are paying $500+ a night at this resort, but when you take a look at the reviews, you get much of the same for all restaurants at the property - a lot of mediocre service with long wait times.
