I highly, highly recommend taking Reggie's classes. They're well balanced and not too fast. Here's a little more information about my experience at the studio. Transportation: They're not very far from the metro in Navy Yard and also there is parking within the neighborhood with 2 hours of free parking if you're driving and don't mind a little walk. Ambiance: If the music in the lobby doesn't get you hype, the music inside of the studio will. I love that they have garage doors that open out to the street. It makes you just want to stop in if you're walking past. They have lockers that are easy to work and have a lock on them. A sweet touch is that they have song lyrics from artists like Biggie inside of the lockers. Class Experience: Love that they have red lighting inside. It allows you to zone out and focus on your workout. It was easy to see the instructor since they're on a stage at the front of the room and they also have their programming projecting on the wall so that you can follow. The class includes hitting the bag, some strength training/cardio/core, then some more boxing and stretching at the end. They offer classes on Classpass but honestly you might as well just sign up for a membership because you're going to be hooked (pun intended)

The space is well laid out and kept clean; staff is friendly and gets to know you; and every coach knows exactly what they're doing. Boxing coaches like Jordan structure a class so you learn technique, get a good workout, and condition your body. And jiu-jitsu classes led by Ron or Mike challenge you to learn every time you visit. (They even got this girl rolling around for the sport!) This isn't a gym where you just slug your fists into a bag and get a summer body: You're going to learn real skills here to work your body and brain, and give you self defense techniques. If you've thought about trying boxing, kickboxing, or jiu-jitsu, give Urban Boxing a try - I think your first class is free, too.

Front dark staff was great at giving us a run down of what to expect in the class prior to it starting. And where all the amenities are. The shower room Was nice and spacious (although being your own towel) and I appreciated that they had tampons in the women's bathroom. The class was a nice combo of cardio, core/strength, and skills. I appreciated the constant movement around. The studio to different areas, including the occasional lap around the entire facility. Class didn't feel too big and we had enough space to do our partner work and hit the bags without hitting each other. The instructor did some individual work but it was limited to 30 seconds or less give. There were 15-20 people in the class. He was available when I had questions about what the combo we were practicing was (if I didn't get it the first two times) and made several corrections to my form along the way. All levels class was good for beginners and definitely a moderate to high intensity workout (depending on how hard you go).

Went from running an 11-minute mile pace to a best of 7:28 per mile largely because of the endurance and breathing techniques I've developed through boxing. I had never boxed before I joined this gym, but I was a competitive athlete until college. I joined because I wanted to get fit again after too many years of sedentary lifestyle, and now I'm in the best shape of my life. I feel happier and more confident. I love the sense of community this gym offers. A lot of the same folks, young professionals, men and women, have been coming here for years. New folks are always welcome. We help each other. Group workouts mean we suffer together. :-) Having a trainer creates a sense of accountability, too. I find it motivates me more than a regular gym. Our trainer knows what he's talking about, and he invests in every member, no matter the experience level or gender, any of that. As a testament to the quality of his training, we have three guys who have won belts and accolades like "All American." (Sparring is optional, though, and most people don't spar.) He runs this gym by himself, too, a small business owner. Offering trials or customized sessions would take his attention away from members, which wouldn't be fair. ** Yelpers may also notice from reading reviews that DBC has a loyal following of athletes who love this gym and our trainer. Negative reviews tend to come from salty people who have not spent real time at the gym and, quite frankly, have no idea what they are missing in terms of community and fitness. More bag time for the rest of us!

I'm from Chandler, Arizona, and I train at a different facility back home. Even so, I was surprised by how familiar and welcoming this location felt from the moment I walked in. The atmosphere reminded me of the kind of environment you hope to find in a high-quality gym--serious training, but with great people and positive energy. The people here are solid. Everyone I met was respectful, hardworking, and focused on improving their craft. That kind of environment makes a big difference when you're training, because the culture of a gym can push you to become better every day. The energy in the room is strong. Whether you're a beginner or someone who has been training for years, you feel motivated to work harder. There's a real sense of discipline and camaraderie that makes training enjoyable but also challenging in the best way. Another thing that stood out to me was how clean and organized the facility is. A clean training environment shows professionalism and respect for the athletes who train there. On top of that, the coaches and fighters here are high-ranking professionals. Many of them are top-level athletes and active competitors, which means you're learning from people who truly understand the sport and what it takes to

I primarily train in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and I love that both disciplines are offered with a wide range of class times and skill levels. Before moving to DC and joining Beta, I trained 5 or 6 years at District Martial Arts in Arlington, Urban Boxing in DC and Arlington, Fight Academy in Pasadena, CA, Gracie Barra in Glendale, CA, and Muay Thai USA in Hollywood, CA. Beta Academy stands out among them for its consistency, quality, and community. One of the biggest highlights for me is that they offer classes on Sundays, which is a rare and much-appreciated option. They also have classes specifically designed for those 40 and older (I am 45), which shows their commitment to accessibility and community. The coaching staff is top-notch--many of them actively compete and bring real-world experience to every class. The facility is always clean and well-maintained, which makes a big difference in the overall training experience. The men's restroom has two showers, which I use after every training session. It's a small detail, but incredibly convenient. If you're looking for a serious, supportive, and well-equipped place to train Muay Thai, BJJ, or MMA, I highly recommend Beta Academy
