So before I get into this one I want to stress that I was visiting Nublu for a Metal show which meant the overall vibe would be much different from another kind of happening in the venue. Oddly enough I was not at all aware of this venue even existing which made me feel I am slacking as a NYC based music scribe but that's now old news, I am aware and excited to have media adventures there going forward. Located way down on Avenue C around 10th Street, if you take the MTA you will still have a bit of a hike, so you might want to Uber or Lyft to the place. While there is street parking around and not a ton of those dining sheds you can even try your luck driving, but not if you plan on having a bunch of drinks when you are there. The space itself is very non-descript, a black wall with the venue logo on it and some other text about music. You will need ID as there are two bars inside. Once in you go down a small set of stairs and are on the main floor. There is a bar to your immediate right and while smaller seems stocked with everything you would need if you are looking for a drink. There is a bar upstairs, reachable by a small stairwell but this was closed during my visit as members of the group were set up there to perform during the show. Beneath the bar are two levels that I guess can be sat on on a normal night. Tonight they were also being used by the large company of musicians. There were 15 in full. The sound was spot on and clear which was a pleasant finding but the lights were mostly kept on red the whole night which made grabbing some snaps all but impossible. They were going for mood. In the rear there are about a half dozen or so gender neutral bathrooms and outside of them a large communal sink. There is no public WiFi to speak of and the mobile signal was tough while down there. I was trying to upload some content and it was taking forever and the attempt was killing my battery so I turned that off until I was heading out. I didn't need to hear from anyone anyway since this was a show. Old buildings right? The place seems to be able to fit about 150 people give or take but don't quote me since I was not looking for any signs to see what the maximum was. If I had to compare the space I would say that it felt like the back room of Saint Vitus or even Lucky 13. Different stage set ups of course but where the people can be this is what I felt. I guess if you are a band that knows you can bring in about 100 people that you should look into a performance there if you are from or plan on visiting NYC. You'll have to do your own homework on how to get that done though since I was a newbie tonight. I had a good time and the group I was seeing was an interesting project called "La Suspendida" and its labelled as a Jazz/Metal/Opera and after watching them for 90 minutes can safely say they do indeed blend all three of those genres together and make it interesting. Pleasantly surprised! This doesn't look like much from the outside with black walls covered with posters and two men sitting outside on stools (we later found out they actually work there). The stool guy had a bit of an attitude. As I reached to open the door, he snaps that is the exit!! Well, perhaps say hello and ask if we need help? Anyway, he proceeds to ask if we have tickets or want them for the show. Tickets were $20 (cash only) for the Wednesday night show. I believe you can buy them online beforehand if you want to use credit card (around $22.50 I think online). Anyway, luckily we had cash to pay for tickets and then got a little stamp on the wrist to enter. Inside is an open concert like vibe. A small bar on the right serves very basic drinks. There is no menu. We stuck to the basics and got a red wine and a Chardonnay. $24 for both and comes in half filled glasses I would use at home to drink water from. Dress code was casual as I saw people in jeans, hoodies, etc. The band that evening was great and played bossa nova music. Venture behind the band and they have seating for a relaxed vibe. Head upstairs and there is another bar overlooking the entire space. It wasn't open that night but I imagine it's open on nights when it's busier. They have a unisex restroom downstairs as well. Overall nice venue, good music, and decent pricing for a live band. Drinks are very basic and the staff could be nicer. read more

Have some friends who DJ for fun, charity & this time this was the local spot for the event. This event was invite only so it was nice that it wasn't crazy jammed packed. We arrived, coat checked & just enjoyed the night. Drinks to start Beer, Tito's & seltzer & can't fully recall the drink name? Something Italian .. oh well later on followed with some shots all decent. Music wise it was good since it was friends playing, venue wise not bad , decent size cool disco ball & good sounds. Interesting decor choices w the projection showing early tv shows it was entertaining, overall not a bad time spend. read more

I think this is a cool venue that I would like to go back to. For seeing music it's great. The bartender was the worst bartender in Manhattan. I asked for a martini and she said it was to complicated and told us to get gin and tonics. I asked for wine and she said what do you want white red rose? I said red and she went to pour something in my glass without even asking. I stopped her. It's fine if you want a dive bar vibe, but it seems strange in a cool jazz venue. Also regardless if you're in the service industry (coming from someone who continues to be for 30+ years) please make an effort to be warm to the customer. All that being said, I honestly think the vibe of the space for watching music is very good and I'd enjoy going back. read more

This review is for a pre-COVID show I attended, just wanted to send Nublu some love! The venue is very small and looking at the pictures I was worried about being packed too close to people, and maybe the fact that I tend to choose less popular acts contributes to more manageable crowds, but I had plenty of room to dance and there was never a wait at the bar. There are some nice corners you can escape to if things to get packed. Despite the venue being small, they do have two bars, one on on the ground floor and one upstairs in a small balcony like area that overlooks the stage. Very intimate, you can get right up to the stage. There' s not a bad spot. And the sound is absolutely phenomenal. All those jazz horns playing can ring in your ears but this was crystal clear and balanced. The ambient lighting is also gorgeous: lights on/behind/under both bars, on the stairs, all around the stage, blue and red bouncing off a disco ball overhead. Plus a projector on one wall showing music videos. After the live act music transitioned to a DJ who was spinning disco, I like that they didn't just launch into deep house or EDM, they kept it vibing with what had come before. read more

Hands down my favorite music venue in NYC. The atmosphere, music and staff are the best. It's one of the few places where you're guaranteed a night of quality live music, whether you are or aren't familiar with the artist. There's a well rounded roster of DJs from around the world as well. You'll dance for hours. The club's Producer Monday nights are incredible and easily the best outing on a Monday. When friends are in from out of town, this is where I take them. Definitely recommend. read more

I went for a solo trip to New York about a week ago and I got recommended this spot so i went on my second to last night. Let me say if i lived in New York you'd catch me here EVERY night. I HAD THE BEST TIME. Music especially hip hop, jazz, feel good really just takes my heart. The bartender she had blonde curly hair, just the sweetest woman. But i really danced all night what felt like hourssssss, to experience music is a blessing already but to see it live from that quantity of instruments in such a great ambiance was amazing. It felt like i was in a fever dream. Everybody was so nice to talk i made several friends throughout my night. I've heard great things about this music bar and I was excited to see the performers that particular nite . Enough so , I had driven one and 1/2 hours from upstate .Before I left , I had checked the website for upcoming Events. This particular performance was well advertised but said nothing about cover fee or anything related. Plus there was no phone number to inquire about the show. When I got to the club (early), the doorman said it was a private event and you had to be on the guest list. I had just waisted my time , long drive, fuel ($50) and a failed nite overall that did not need to happen. Why would you advertise a event to the public , if it's not available to the public? This place SUCKS for this reason alone. Wish I had the opportunity to give it a good review, but I was not allowed to enter. read more

Bought a ticket to the event last night, December 17th. They sold tickets to the public, not mentioning that some organization had bought out the venue for their Christmas party.... And on top of that, as soon as 10:00pm hit, the club was swarmed with questionably young college students. The bartender scolded me for not hitting my minimum, but we had to leave ASAP due to the teenagers smoking cigs inside on the second floor lol. If you're going to host two private parties, don't sell tickets to the public... because now you have a disgruntled customer writing a review that you tried to make an extra 30 bucks off of. I never got my money back from one of their events. I was very exited to attend a jazz event in the New York area, especially with Ray Angry being there. Unfortunately I was not aware nor told there was a age limit for the event. The problem came in when I asked for my refund. They said I would be reimbursed for the situation, but I never received my money or contact information from management. I am now $25 short from a event I didn't go to nor was told that I wasn't eligible to attend. Save the time and money and go to a different club. read more

Lame bar! Woman named yeshim (not sure if that's the right spelling) and a man named Thomas gave us stamps then proceeded to tell us that we weren't allowed in. The worst NYE party ever! They charged $40 pp for supposedly live music and 'surprise' musicians but only a boring dj music and about 10-20 people max! When we asked about live performance they said it would start at 1pm -which is way too late for NYE- and didn't happen. Last year was spectacular that's why we decided to come again this year.
