Nostalgia is what came to mind when I first saw this spot. It looked smaller from the outside, but the inside has a great big dining area. It appears that at one point they may have added space. The service was good here too. We were seated and we didn't have to wait long. Our waitress was super nice and fortunately she recommended the onion rings, which are home made, and myself can't recommend them enough. My husband and I had the double cheeseburger and it was surprisingly out of this world good. A Nu Grill burger NEVER disappoints. They are the inventors of the so-called "smashburger" that now seems to be new and all the rave right now with these newer burger joints in the big cities. Nu Grill has been "smashing" burgers for more than 50 years since I was a kid along with the former Boone & Daubens, Larry's Carryout and Dairy Mug. "Smashburgers" are not a new thing in Fort Scott, but it seems to be in these bigger metropolitan cities. Oh, Yea! This place is Amazing. We split the giant pork tenderloin sandwich which was cooked to a perfect crispy crunch with delicious pork tenderloin inside. Our salads were fresh and dressings tasted homemade. Onion rings were perfect too. Our server and the entire staff were friendly, attentive and delightful. Nothing on the outside suggests that NuGrill is the town hub for good times. But it's clean and well cared for. We will be sure to make Ft. Scott and Nu Grill are on our return route. Yum. read more

This is the kind of burger I search for. Seared well with outstanding cheese on a great bun-perfect. Side of tater tots and onion rings were also very good. Place takes you back in time and everyone inside very friendly. We got there 15 minutes before lunch started and they took our order early and our food was served literally like 11:05. My husband and I had dinner at Nu Grill. I ordered a cheeseburger and Susie Qs my husband had the broasted chicken with mashed potatoes with gravy & a salad. The burger was just ok, not that great, I was hoping for a really good burger, it wasn't bad just average at best. The Susie's were a disappointment, the were just little pieces and were just barely warm. They were completely cold before I finished eating. I must have gotten the bottom of the fry basket, not very good at all. I had to use a spoon to eat them. My husband said the chicken was pretty good. We had good service and it's a neat old place. I was visiting friends in town, basically this is the local "watering hole". We ate here for breakfast, and dinner a few times. Oddly enough, not for lunch. The dining area is ample enough for the demand. The service there is consistently friendly, fast, and accurate. I have ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs, and club sandwich, but really can't wrong with any menu item. We were super excited to try this place on our way to visit our daughter. Our experience was very disappointing and not at all like the reviews we read. The service was unwelcoming to say the least. Our server was more interested in gossiping at the drink station & being on her phone than being at work. We thought the food would be great even if the service was terrible. Every now and then we come across a real gem. Decided to stop in at the Nu Grill. While I try to eat local whenever I can, this is one diner that I will plan to eat at again on my next trip to Kansas City. Stopped in during the slow part of the afternoon. Food - ordered a cheese burger plate, no bun, with the fried zucchini. Straight forward and very good. Got to talking to one of the managers and that's where small town America shines through. He bought an ad for the local high school yearbook - and made the kids go through their spiel to practice it. Took care of another employee, because it was the right thing to do. They even refroze a freezer pack that I let thaw, a very kind gesture. Have been eating in KCMO all week, and paying downtown prices. I left a twenty, which more than covered the meal with a generous tip. $20 might not get me much more than a St*rbucks and a roll in most cities anymore. Spent well over an hour here, and the food is good, the service is good, the ambiance is good - but I will eat here a hundred times before I spend another hundred for an OK meal in KCMO. Stop in - it's a diner, not a tourist trap, and the people and food are genuine and honest. Not that all diners are great just by being in a small town, but Nu Grill is one that has earned its high mark. read more

This is Fort Scott's greasy spoon, and it has been around a long time. I had their double cheeseburger and fries for lunch awhile back and their two egg special for breakfast this morning. In Fort Scott for a weekend baseball tourney and found this gem through the trusty Yelp app. Took the in-laws and two very hungry 16-year old boys to eat between games. The place is a bit chopped up, seemingly because they started in one space and then expanded and maybe expanded again (just a guess), but it's quite the find. Gluten, schmooten...I cheated, okay? I had the philly with onion rings. Okay, so onion rings come in several varieties, and I'm sure each person has their favorite type. I love the thin, hand battered kind, not the thick, heavily breaded kind, so I was in OR heaven! They were freaking amazing! Many, had the chicken fry meal, FIL had a burger with CRISPY (hate the barely fried ones) tater tots, and hubby had their signature item...the broasted chicken. The chicken was AMAZING. Oh, and the side salads that came with their meals were on a dinner plate and nearly filled the whole thing. We actually stopped here again on Sunday (Father's Day) but got there after 1 and since they close at 2 on Sundays, they had already shut down the chicken "broaster" for the day (told they do this 1 hour before closing). So, I couldn't get the chicken like I had planned. I got a burger (sans bun) to be somewhat "good", but damn if I didn't get the onion rings again...so sue me! Fort Scott is what I would call a small town. It's quaint, but more rural than I like. So I was expecting "small town" restaurants. My husband and I were passing through to meet the in-laws, and we stopped to eat. At the recommendation of Yelp, we decided to stop here. I ordered the fried chicken because I never say no to fried chicken when it's offered somewhere. I opted for the 3 piece dark because dark meat is way better than that dry white. With the meal, you get a roll, salad, and choice of potato. I went for the mashed potatoes and subbed green beans for the side salad. I thought the food was pretty good, but it arrived lukewarm. My husband got the footlong chili dog and tater tots. There was a ton of meat, but not much liquid to go around. He said it wasn't dry, but it definitely wasn't a "chili" by our standards. My MIL got the Suzie Qs (curly fries), which she happily shared with me. I found them to be on the crispy side because of how thin they're cut into curls. I prefer a thicker fry, so I can't say that I enjoyed them too much. They do offer sweet tea, which, like my obsession with fried chicken, I always have to get it when a restaurant has it. Since most restaurants in the KC metro area do not, I have become accustomed to being surprised when a restaurant does, as I was here. It wasn't overly sweet, which can be good or bad, depending on how you like your sweet tea. I enjoy a range of sweetness, so I was happy with the sugar level. The prices are pretty good, and service was mostly okay. I don't particularly care for the way food seems to be handled with nonchalance. I.e. One of the plates of food had a curly fry hanging off the side, and the server just swung it back on the plate with her bare fingers. My food touched her bare hands when it was being handed to me. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious because of flu season, but it did wig me out a bit. I know that it happens all the time in the food industry, but I don't generally see it in front of me. Refills did take some time, and we essentially seated ourselves at a table when we walked in. The table wasn't cleared off, so we had to wait for them to do so, which took an awful long time for some reason. Basically this review was a long-winded way to say that this place ain't bad if you're looking for some good ol' comfort food. I'm sure all the townies already knew that though. Weekend mini-vacation down to Fort Scott Kansas and dropped in the Nu Grill for dinner with the entire family. My wife and kids have eaten here before but it was y first time. My daughter talked about how good the burgers were and she was 100% correct. The Nu Grill is like a diner you would see in a movie and we were immediately greeted by the two guys working the grill as well as the waitress behind the counter. The burgers were awesome. If you're looking for lean, fat free ground beef, this is not your place. They hand cut their potatoes for fries and Suzy-Qs and the menu prices will shock you in a good way. $3.00 range for a burger! The only downside I can come up with was their soda fountain wasn't great and everything that came out of it was flat. Super friendly staff and great food gets my vote of approval. read more

Edited: I did give two stars because of the wonderful waitress but down to one because we (3 out of 5...those of us who ate the onion rings) got severely sick on the way home. The only reason why I am even giving two stars is because our waitress was so sweet and on top of our drinks her name was Hannah B otherwise I would give zero stars!!!! Food was so salty and the onion rings were a glob of fried batter and onions all stuck together. The fires seemed like they were cooked in old oil and the Philly cheesesteak was soggy and salty as well. I can't believe this place has so many great reviews. We spent over $50 on a family of five which for the food and quality was incredibly high and that was before tip. Unless you want a greasy salty mess avoid this place. read more

We stopped here for lunch while riding our HD bikes to Xenia, KS and touring Fort Scott. We've stopped at Nu Grill several times before and will continue to since it's one of favorites locations when riding in this part of Kansas. The service has always been friendly and prompt and the food has been spot on excellent. This restaurant has been here for 71 years! I'd recommend setting at the counter to give you that complete nostalgia experience. You'll also have a great view of the grill, the grill crew and the local topics of discussion. Who knows you might just find out who's building a new house and how all of the cows are doing out on the rented land. Sit back, relax, disconnect from technology and allow the total experience to unfold. Oh yes, I'd highly recommend the Southwest Burger and the Philly Cheesesteak, both are excellent. Don't forget to order Suzi-Q's as well as an order of onion rings. After enjoying lunch, take a tour of both the historic Fort Scott and the historic downtown. A wonderful walk through history. OMG, this is by far the best chicken I have ever tasted. Super dirt cheap pricing and amazing food, I went here 3 times while in was in the city for work and I got a burger, southwest burger, curly fries, and a Philly cheesesteak. The BEST hamburger in Kansas bar none. This is a place I always seek out whenever in the SE KS area. The hamburgers are delicious and the suzy's are fresh and crispy. I've been eating here since I was a small child and this place has gotten better with age. It looks like a dump, but places that look like that usually have the best food and the NU Grill is no exception. Even if you have to go 50 miles out of your way, I'd recommend this place to anyone. read more
