I've been going to Novus for 20 years now (my how time flies!). It's the only place where I buy my glasses and contact lens. They have a fantastic selection of frames (always the latest styles) and are very knowledgeable about the latest in eyewear technology. I can't imagine going anywhere else... the post-purchase support for glasses is excellent too, they have fixed many a pair for me, even when it has been my own fault! They have done it again! Provided nice frames for my glasses with what ODSP gives for glasses, that I even get complimented on my choice of style of glasses. Do not go to those cheap glasses places, because their frames or lenses often break, scratch or are just tasteless fasionably, even if you think you cannot afford it, and if you are on OW or ODSP, they are very helpful, and there is an eye toctor there on Tuesdays and Fridays. When I was seven years old I wanted to look like my grandfather, who always wore eyeglasses. My mother told me that eyeglasses were only for people who had poor vision, and that I simply could not wear glasses for appearances. My next question to her was, "How does your vision become poor?" That same afternoon I sat in a poorly-lit room and started reading a stack of storybooks, straining my eyes to decipher the text. I did this for several days. I'm not sure if my brilliant scheme actually worked, or if it was pure coincidence, but after my first eye doctor appointment, the optometrist concluded that I needed eyeglasses. I feigned anguish and fear ("What does that mean? Will I go blind? I'm only seven years old!") on the outside, but deep down I felt like the world's greatest mastermind villain. Some 20 years later I decided I would utilize the ol' company health plan and buy a new pair of glasses, and that's where Novus Optical comes in. I also needed to get my eyes tested because I don't actually know my grade. The optometrist at Novus Optical, Dr. Liu, was unbelievably helpful. In addition to the vision test, he did the usual checks for cataracts and glaucoma. Since I'm almost over the hill (30 is the new 20 though), I had a lot of questions about eye disease. He answered all my questions thoroughly. He also told me my eyesight was near perfect, probably because I didn't read enough books in the dark. Despite my amazing vision I still opted to get eyeglasses because of the amount of reading I do at my desk, which ultimately lead to headaches. The associate, Alla, was equally patient and helpful, and honest. I showed her a picture of the frames I had in mind (they were Kid Cudi's in GQ) and she bluntly told me that I would look terrible in them. She showed me that particular style from her collection and after trying them on, she was right. We spent over 20 minutes trying different styles until I finally settled on a pair, all based on her guidance. I didn't feel rushed at all, and I felt very confident and satisfied when I left the shop. I chose Novus for its convenient location and the positive reviews here on Yelp; I'm very glad I did. Every day I still aspire to be just like my grandfather. These days though, I don't need a pair of eyeglasses to do it. If ever tempted to drop into this shop for eyewear...keep walking...shop there at your peril. 21/2 years ago, I was persuaded to pay more than I was comfortable with for a nice pair of prescription sunglasses "for the quality". Today, after taking very good care of them, one of lenses split where they join with the frames...just by removing the sunglasses. The other lens looks to be about to do the same thing. Upon inquiry at the shop, I was told with no discussion or even a glance at the glasses that, "you need new lenses--$450"...when pressed about whether there was anything else they could do the response was, "I don't make them sir". High end prices, 1950's technology (customer records stored on slips of paper on an old "Rolodex" and ZERO customer emphathy! Oh yeah, some Gorilla glue and a bit of attention to detail and I fixed the glasses in 2 minutes. read more

After breaking my very expensive frames I had to wait until my insurance plan kicked in (every two years, new glasses). I am always excited to buy new glasses yet fearful for making wrong decisions (as I had with the former pair, the lenses were crap). On an impulse I went into Novus just to look at frames while waiting for the plan to kick in. Wow, what a selection. As well, they carried my former brand at a better price the my usual place. I explained I was just looking. Alla, the clerk, was so nice and fun to work with; we ended up spending almost 30 min. playing with different frames. I made an eye exam apt and told her I would be back (I was so impressed I decided that I would make the trip back as opposed to returning to my usual place) Long story short, the eye exam was prompt, thorough, and additionally, Dr. Liu offered me some important medical advice that I had not heard before (I am borderline type II diabetic) about my optical health. I re-tried on all the pairs of glasses I had first liked. Alla also recommended some new ones to try on (It seemed to me that she had considered new options in anticipation of my return). I selected two pairs and wrestled with myself over which pair I like the most. During that process, she left me alone to decide (which I needed since it was ultimately about my preference) Wow, did I ever make the right choice, only possible because she helped me narrow the choices - a problem for me. When it came time to chose the options, she was very professional and respected the limits of my plan ($) yet helped me see the cost differences objectively. The wait period for the new pair was a tad longer than I was told (two weeks versus ten days, no problem). I pick my glasses up today, yes I am writing a review prior to completing the process. I doubt I will need to change anything I have said. I highly recommend Novus for not only buying glasses, but the eye exam, and any other repairs etc you require (while I was there the staff helped a few people with simple repairs all at no cost - I assume they were previous customers). super staff, super selection, pricey but worth it (glasses are a vital adaptive tool for most of us, we need to have properly fitted glasses and excellent lenses), and great care and service. This small optical store is clean, tidy, professional, and knows its customers personally, and gets to know them. I have used this place for my most recent glasses and frames, which was a few years ago, and my husband has gone to this store for his contacts for many years. They carry wonderful frame styles, a wide variety of contact lenses, including hard-to-find ones such as those that my husband uses, and the hours are pretty good, open util 7 on weekdays, and to 5 or 6 on weekends.
