This property also has a golf course, so you'll see lots of foot traffic around the back side, where there's a restaurant and golf shop. We stayed at the property for a couple of nights and our room was great. It faced the interior, so we could see a beautiful flower garden and more of a wooded area. Our room was a bit dated but well maintained. One thing I did not realize until we arrived is that our room, at least (and maybe all rooms), did not have air conditioning. Luckily for us, the (summer) temperature was comfortable, but this could be an issue if you visit during a hot spell. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant both mornings and it was delightful. A traditional English spread (buffet) with self seating. Overall, staff was great. The only thing I'd caution against is the amount of stairs you'll have to go up and down trying to get from one place to the other just within the hotel since the topography has rooms and hallways at all levels. Pack lightly or ask for your bags to be delivered to your room at arrival.

The hotel has very nice grounds, and is located in a quiet residential estate near a major motorway (M1). I was also impressed with their restaurant, Blossoms. The extensive menu options, quality of the food and most importantly, they are open all day until 9pm, with room service as well. All too often, I will check into a hotel after flying all night from the US, coupled with a train journey, only to discover my hotel's on-site restaurant is only open for breakfast, and dinner starting at 5pm. The last thing a traveler with my schedule wants is to be required to forage for a decent, relaxing place for a meal after checking in. Definitely not an issue at the DoubleTree. I travel to Nottingham on business at least four times per year. I used to stay in the city center, but the environment is two hectic and the hotels are not nearly as nice as the DoubleTree. Nick and Michael at the front desk are outstanding and ready to assist in every way. Rely on them and every member of staff to make your stay in Nottingham

Crewe & Harpur - Roast Pork Sunday lunch

There is a sign of a one hour wait to be served but I think this was inaccurate. I ordered the Sunday lunch at the bar, it came less than 10 mins. Roast pork loin, very small stuffing ball, a small piece of crackling. My request for extra crackling was not honored. Roast potatoes, the roasted vegetables , some peas pods and an over cooked Yorkshire pudding. Food was warm and not hot. The gravy was bland the whole meal was bland, with little flavor or seasoning. The bar area was a bit noisy with crashing bottles into the recycle bin, and the usual meaningless background music. Service was ok, but no acknowledgement when I was leaving. This meal gave no reason to return.

Swarkestone is a small village south of Derby, in a lovely setting next to the River Trent…read more It's one of those places that has rather too much of historical interest for its size: the bridge and causeway over the Trent, originally built in the 13th century, together form the longest stone bridge in the UK. Its seventeen arches stretch over three-quarters of a mile (1 km). The present handsome spans over the river date from the mid 1700s. The Cavaliers and Roundheads clashed here in 1643 during the English Civil War, and it's where Bonnie Prince Charlie's army stopped and turned back in 1745, ensuring the collapse of the Jacobite rebellion. There has been a pub on the site of the Crewe and Harpur Arms for over 800 years, but the present coaching inn has 'only' been there for about 200. This handsome red brick building is spacious inside, with a central bar, and serves a selection of real ales and typical pub grub. The decor has had a modern makeover, a bit bland for my taste: but the real attraction is, in any case, outside: it has a lovely, large beer garden which runs down to the River Trent, alongside the famous bridge. Although it's close to the road, noise doesn't seem to intrude. It's a lovely spot on a summer's day. Swarkestone is on a lovely circular walk, taking in the River Trent and the nearby Trent and Mersey Canal. It takes about three hours and would make a perfect evening stroll - ending back at the pub, of course...

The restaurant deco is a mix of funky and traditional country design that gives off a romantic and at ease feel about it. On walking in I was given a warm welcome and instantly offered drinks and despite there being a traditional bar, I never had to step a foot near it as the waiting service was second to none. The Lounge/bar offers the ideal environment for pre-dinner drinks and houses a relaxing log fire where we were served drinks and ordered our food before being taken to our table which is a nice touch. The menu is short yet varied and boasts 100% all local produce and locally reared meats. Freshly baked bread with dipping oils were offered complimentary and on the table when we sat down. The food was presented in an artistic fine-dine style and the portion sizes are good and filling. The price is defiantly appropriate to the service and excellent food and I will definitely be going back! I would also recommend pre-booking.

Fantastic place for so many reasons…read more We had our wedding meal here - took 90 people and had the whole place to ourselves. The staff were so excellent in helping us prepare for our time there, helping us come up with a menu specific for the occasion and putting in so much work to get the place looking beautiful! The food was great and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. The restaurant area has a more sleek feel to it whereas around the bar there are open log fires and on one side, the bar is uniquely stocked/held up with an array of books - wonderfully unique! We have eaten there on other occasions and the service always feels more personalised than a more "corporate" place - must be a very friendly staff team all round! They are also involved in local initiative such as making record-breaking size pork pies... Definitely eye-catching! Friends of ours had heard that this place, 4-5 years back didn't have a good reputation... From our experiences the change in ownership/management has definitely pulled off a masterstroke!
