Expedia threw up this Novotel with a great rate for B&B and its location just off the M1 junction 25 made it ideal for accessing both our theme park and restaurant I'll get the negative out of the way first. The building is a bit dated though the staff do work hard at keeping it clean. The whole place could do with some updating and lick of paint. If I had paid the rack rate I saw on checking in, I'd have been disappointed but the Expedia price point was fair Happily, I can report on a yummy buffet breakfast. The staff worked very hard to keep everything stocked up and guests supplied with coffee and tea. There was a good choice of hot food - all components of an English breakfast were available together with a small selection of continental style cheese and ham. The cold counter had fresh fruit salad, cereals, yoghurts and pastries and I appreciated having a range of fruit juices available. Sadly, the friendly staff were once again let down by the infrastructure - the old bread toaster acted more like a bread warmer When my friends and I braved the outdoor pool (it was totally freezing in the British mid summer), the real gems of this hotel came to light - the staff, especially the female waitstaff from the restaurant, who were super friendly, chatty and made us feel at home To the management of Novotel, the staff in your hotel is top class. They have elevated what would have been a 3 star rating to a 4 star review. Please back them up by giving them surroundings to match their 5 star service!

Under the General Manager, Kai, all the staff could not do more to make you welcome. Not super luxury, but perfectly comfortable, with spacious rooms, comfortable beds and pleasant amenities. Food and bar just fine. For what it is, this Accor Novotel, is just great and very well priced too.

I've just returned from a brief stay at Risley Hall. It was something of a flying visit whilst…read moreattending a funeral in the local area, so sadly didn't get the opportunity to benefit from the hotel's spa facilities! However, having booked a suite (as recommended by a reviewer on the Late Rooms website) I was not disappointed. We were given a fair sized twin room, alongside a huge en-suite bathroom (bath/shower, loo and twin sinks), together with an extremely spacious lounge - which had an additional 'cloakroom' completely separate from the bathroom. The suite itself was well equipped with two TVs (one in the lounge and one in the bedroom), the usual tea/coffee tray, a fridge, a safe, an ironing board and iron plus various other little extras. The suites are located in Willoughy Hall, just across the courtyard from the main hotel - so if it is raining you do potentially get a bit wet when going back and forth! But today it was quite refreshing to get a breath of air when en route to the dining room for breakfast. And breakfast was great! Plenty of choice, generous portions and tasty food. I paid £62 for the suite (via Late Rooms) so at £31 per person consider we got a real bargain!! The hotel is located very close to junction 25 of the M1, so very convenient for Derby or Nottingham. Can thoroughly recommend it!

Risley Hall is a rather difficult place to review. In the main hall it is lovely - lots of quaint…read morelittle lounges, beautiful food in the restaurant, good service. I believe the rooms in the main section too are spectacular. However, go on a 'spa break' and you get shunted off to the 'annexe' which is frankly pretty grim - crushed pringles under the sofa anyone? I won't go into the litany of problems we encountered - they were all fairly minor but would add up to a rather damning report all in all. The spa and the annexe are very tired and a little grubby, although the beauticians and the treatments were lovely. I have heard others who stayed in the main hotel say they have had a wonderful time - the grounds too are really nice for walking around. However, be warned about the completely different standards (but same price tag) for the spa section. Ask where your room is if you have booked at the Risley!

After passing the bare chested man changing clothes in the packed parking lot,, I entered the…read morelobby, which was teeming with people coming and going from the gym on the right of the check in stand.. none of them wearing masks. There was a huge, brightly lit and noisy bar area to the left of the check in stand, where it seemed people who caught each other's eye in the gym were going for a drink and some fried food. The place was filthy... with some dried brown drips coming down the sides of the check in stand and a floor needing a vacuum. Every surface I saw needed to be wiped down. At check in, the host announced my colleague's room number out loud and then did the same for me. This is something I always am cautious about as a business woman traveling alone, but this time my husband was along, and after a long day, I just let it go. There was no security to prevent people from the gym/bar scene from entering the floors with the rooms. Our room was the first one reached after climbing a very short flight of stairs... and it positively smelled! I don't know what happened in there but it was reminiscent of a sweet smelling cleaning fluid and mildew ... or maybe booze soaked into the carpet. Our window overlooked an expansive stretch of asphalt roof and the windows hardly opened a crack so it was not possible to air it out.. I went down to the lobby to request another room, but the host was very reluctant to consider it. I told him I couldn't stay there because of my allergies and he said he could move me a couple doors down if I hadn't touched anything and would please just re-attach the sticker to the door that said the place was completely clean and fresh!!!! The next room was just as bad with regards to smell and that was it, we checked out and found another place to stay. After I left, I received an emailed invoice for three night's stay.

The building looks new and purpose-built. The place was a hive of activity all weekend - besides the hotel itself, there's a restaurant, a Starbucks and a leisure centre, spa and gym which is open to the general public for membership. Our friend got a great internet deal - a room for 4 people which cost £82 for the whole room including breakfast. The room was spacious with room for a sofa and table. There was also free wifi Breakfast was a buffet affair and there was a nice selection of hot and cold items to set us up for a walk round the adjoining Attenborough Nature Centre. A lovely hotel, especially at the price that we got the room
