A small path leads through the garden towards the hotel which is almost completely covered in Ivy. The entrance is through a huge conservatory, which houses a variety of comfortable seating, perfect for retiring with a coffee after a sumptuous meal. Through the conservatory is a bar area, where you can sit and peruse the varied menu. After recovering from the price of the meals we made our choices and were entertained by the gregarious owner, as we waited for our starters to be served to our table. The restaurant itself is impressively furnished, if a little old fashioned, however, the whole place oozes class, making you feel like your meal is a special occasion. A sociable round table aided the evening, and my starter of mushrooms and bacon in a light cheese sauce was impressive, however, my wife's prawn cocktail was less so. Good course spacing before the main course is always a good sign, as are unobtrusive but efficient waiting on staff. My main course of steak tournedos was sublime, with a good selection of vegetables and saute potatoes. But again my wife's seabass was a little dry, which when you're paying this kind of money is disappointing. Desserts were selected from a very large sweet trolley, which reminded me of the 1970s and were again a little disappointing: the Jamaican cheesecake was a little too fatty. Not the best all round meal we have eaten, but the whole experience at the Brookhouse just gives it an extra star. The prices are too prohibitive for regular visits, with a three course meal and drinks, not much shy of £50 per person. Still for a special occasion, it takes some beating.

This property also has a golf course, so you'll see lots of foot traffic around the back side, where there's a restaurant and golf shop. We stayed at the property for a couple of nights and our room was great. It faced the interior, so we could see a beautiful flower garden and more of a wooded area. Our room was a bit dated but well maintained. One thing I did not realize until we arrived is that our room, at least (and maybe all rooms), did not have air conditioning. Luckily for us, the (summer) temperature was comfortable, but this could be an issue if you visit during a hot spell. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant both mornings and it was delightful. A traditional English spread (buffet) with self seating. Overall, staff was great. The only thing I'd caution against is the amount of stairs you'll have to go up and down trying to get from one place to the other just within the hotel since the topography has rooms and hallways at all levels. Pack lightly or ask for your bags to be delivered to your room at arrival.

The facade is impressively modern, with black shiny cladding, awhooshy, Star Trek stylee automatic doors, and moody modern lighting. Plus points: - clean and tidy - friendly and efficient staff - a pretty serviceable menu in the Bar and Grill Foodwise, the dinner menu is pretty good, with an emphasis on meaty dishes; they advertise that all their beef is from Derbyshire, aged, etc., and I've heard no complaints. The kitchen also does a good line in starters, high points including calamari ( so simple, so easy to screw up), and a very nice game terrine. If I was to sum it up, it's an uncomplicated, and perhaps slightly old fashioned menu, but probably well suited to the clientele and with a serviceable wine list. The rooms seem to be large, reasonably comfortble, and boasting the mod cons one would expect lots of exposed brick and is-it-a-wardrobe shiny wood. On the downside:- my room had a monsoon shower, but no bath- the shower produced a stale-smelling trickle of water, not the gushy tropical downpour one would hope for - the sink appeared to be able to produce hot water, but not cold . Not great for shaving or brushing your teeth - breakfast, some mornings, appear to be not-quite-ready after the restaurant has opened; quite inconvenient if you're looking for an early start - the room service menu is rather staid and changes irregularly; incidentally the menus in the room have only a vague resemblance to what is actually available - the bar is fairly pricey £9.50 for a double G & T seems a bit steep, even to a Londoner. I could also whine about the room being over heated, the sheets over-starched, or noise in the morning, but in my experience these are true of most bigger hotels anywhere in the world, so it would be somewhat unfair.

Bar staff didn't have a clue, and even less when it came to serving breakfast. The waitress, who brought me the wrong breakfast order, asked me if I was sure I ordered what I ordered from her... I mean, seriously?? At the bar she really had no idea of any of the spirits or how to pour a drink - the lime slices were brown and manky around the edges and had clearly been cut days earlier. And the music in the bar was so loud we had to ask for it to be turned down, we couldn't hear across the table. The breakfast for 14 pounds was a laugh - the 'buffet table' was a joke. Coffee - o dear, stick to the tea. The rooms are actually quite nicely appointed, if small, but no wardrobe, just a nook, and no fridge, iron or ironing board. I got an ironing board sent up with an iron which promptly ruined the shirt I put it on as the plate was covered in some burnt substance I could not get off my shirt. I know you are thinking I should have checked, but I did puff the steam and wipe it on the board before use, however it seems the cotton was especially good at attracting the debris. [sigh] And then 5 pounds an hour for wifi - really?? And lastly the pillows are truly diabolical - it they cost more than 50p each I would be amazed, they were a shocker. When we went to get a coffee in the reception area we were informed we had checked out and had to pay cash (we hadn't) and I was not offered an itemised bill to check before they took my payment. All in all, you could do worse - but give it a hard think.

I am no exception. I was in Nottingham for my sister's graduation ceremony. One of my biggest fear when staying in European hotels is associated with the heating element during winter. Since they have to keep the pipes not frozen, many hotels turn the heating WAY TOO HOT. Inexpensive hotels especially do not provide humidifying device which causes the air to be really really dry. This was not an issue at Premier Travel Inn. The location of this hotel is really convenient. You are at a walking distance to many food choices and Tesco. There is also a Costa within the hotel serving yummy coffee. I particularly love their "30 minutes free internet access" every day. When requested, they will give you a free internet access card valid for 30 minutes. 30 minutes is just enough to browse any important emails but then you won't be so attached to the computer to miss out the vacation. Once I had paid we were directed to our room and were bitterly disappointed to see that the room was grossly misrepresented on the website. There were no curtains, no seating area, no hot drink making facilities, the window sills were filthy, flaked paint from the ceiling on the carpet, the pillows were so overused they were flat, the shower curtain was stained brown around the bottom and the shower hooks were rusty. The toilet was virtually impossible to flush. The list goes on. Not only was the room nowhere near worth £100, it shouldn't even be available for a paying guest. We took our cases down to reception and very calmly and politely informed the staff that we couldn't stay in a room of that standard. The gentleman on reception apologised several times and informed us that he would start the refund process and it could take up to 7 days. So 3 months later after chasing the hotel, booking.com and Talash Hotels (who apparantly own the Quorn Country Hotel) we still have no refund. Talash Hotels totally ignore any communication from us AND the hotel and booking.com don't want to know. So now we are starting legal proceedings to obtain the refund that we were told on several occasions by the hotel (by emails and verbally) that we would be receiving. All they had to do was the right thing and just give us our money back. I can only give the worst review of this hotel and the dishonest people who own it and warn potential customers to go further down the road and book into the Quorn Grange Hotel instead, which is what we had to do. Funnily enough the staff there seemed to already know how below standard the Quorn Country Hotel is.

We were swiftly greeted by Restaurant Manager Kieron who talked us through the Menu. The new offering boasts 'Bread & Olives' 'To Begin' 'To Share' 'From the Grill' and 'Classics' options, giving the Menu more of high end Bistro feel. We began with Summer dishes that easily exceeded expectation. The simple description of Sea Trout, Beetroot Fennel & Grapefruit was enough to tempt us, our other choice being the Scallop, broad bean gazpacho, goats curd & olive dish. Both starters were simple and elegant with a well thought out balance of texture and taste. The gazpacho was perfectly seasoned which is extremely difficult to execute (trust me I've tried and failed enough times!) Paired with a Malborough Pinot Gris it was as if summer had finally arrived in style. Again, the Main courses offer a huge variety with new flow to the menu, allowing the guest to decide on sharing, plated, or classics with Head Chef Ben Chaplin and Sous Chef Terry Hayfields take on 'nostalgic homely classics' which I felt was a lovely touch. I opted for the Entrecote, Sarladaise Potato & Cabis served medium rare. The flavour was immense, so simple but again a balanced flavoursome dish. Our other main was the Whole Baby Poussin, Balsamic Roast Peach with Roquet & Parmesan Salad which again highlighted the art of simplicity in Summer cooking. To finish, we shared the Banana Parfait, Burnt Toffee & Pineapple and the Jasmine Creme Brulee with Almond Tuille. A delightful way to finish a meal that well and truly sees high end Bistro dining back on the map in Nottingham. It is time for Nottingham to re-engage with Merchants Restaurant.
