This property also has a golf course, so you'll see lots of foot traffic around the back side, where there's a restaurant and golf shop. We stayed at the property for a couple of nights and our room was great. It faced the interior, so we could see a beautiful flower garden and more of a wooded area. Our room was a bit dated but well maintained. One thing I did not realize until we arrived is that our room, at least (and maybe all rooms), did not have air conditioning. Luckily for us, the (summer) temperature was comfortable, but this could be an issue if you visit during a hot spell. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant both mornings and it was delightful. A traditional English spread (buffet) with self seating. Overall, staff was great. The only thing I'd caution against is the amount of stairs you'll have to go up and down trying to get from one place to the other just within the hotel since the topography has rooms and hallways at all levels. Pack lightly or ask for your bags to be delivered to your room at arrival.

I was tipped off to this place, rather surprisingly, by staff at a nearby micro pub, as a good option in the city on my pub crawl between Belper and Derby. And it was. On a nice day, it is really nice to sit in the gardens and have a drink, or have a meal in the conservatory restaurant. The food is a little on the pricey side though. It really does live up to its 4 star standards, and would definitely be recommended.

On that, I'm thrilled to say that Shottle Hall, it's staff and the quality of the venue on the day lived up to our expectations! Situated in a very accessible rural location, on the south-eastern fringe of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire, the hall is family run and you feel it. Attentive, without ever being over the top, with each of the 8 rooms individual in style and feel. A case of take your pick! The venue doubles as a hotel day by day and I'd recommend it to anyone who is passing through The Peak District or spending time in or around Chatsworth House.

Visitors by train (like me, doing a rail trail along the river Derwent between Matlock and Derby) should know that it is a 15 minute walk from the station, with almost nothing of interest in between. But the second recommended Cromford pub, The Boat Inn, is nearby this place. The Greyhound has limited real ales on hand pump, staff were very friendly and the décor is certainly upmarket and attractive. This is really big pub which earns it a recommendation for groups.
