If Lisa Frank opened a bookstore, it might look like Novelette Booksellers, Nashville's only queer-owned bookstore. I stopped by this East Nashville gem on a recent trip, when I took a self-guided walking tour of Nashville's indie bookstores and little libraries (more to come). Novelette is housed inside a former church, where you can browse a curated selection of new books amidst boldly colored murals, fairy lights, and stained glass windows. Would recommend!

This was the cutest little bookstore in Nashville. While we were there, there was even a local author set up selling and signing her books. There is literally something for everyone- books and cute bookish nick nacks (is that how you spell it?). Anyhoo, I highly recommend stopping in and supporting this small business. Also--- I love a good IG worthy moral-- check out that fun wall! After shopping, go next door and grab some food at the cute cafe!

Although it was my first time to novelette, it will not be my last! I was warmly greeted when I walked in and immediately noticed the bright colored murals on the walls as well as the lovely and bright book covers on tables and shelves. This space felt automatically inviting and warm. As a local independent book seller, it was certainly small however, there were lots of interesting titles. A customer walked in who seemed to be a repeat customer because the staff working gave a bunch of highly entertaining summaries of book recommendations that were so fun and I loved listening to all of the charming recommendations. I settled on a mystery and if you're not sure what type of book you want, you can select a brown paper bag that is titled "blind date with a book". The spot is great!

Such a cute and sweet bookstore. I was greeted immediately upon entering and even was welcomed by a friendly doggie (it was trained to sit and stay, I asked to pet!) most times you get smaller bookstores that don't have a variety of book, but this one has a VARIETY and I loved it! The decor was so cute too! They also had blind book dates with characteristics of the book on the front. I think this was a great idea'

Thoroughly enjoyed browsing this curated collection that is held within a vibrant inclusive space, a must visit to support local and independent bookstores. Brilliancy shines in the name, design, artwork, layout and labeling of sections, and all around friendly space. I enjoyed some brief conversation with other browsers and will return for future purchases!

I finally got to check out this independent bookstore for the first time. This was such a cute store. It's small so be careful walking around while there's a crowd. It's so instagram worthy and has a great selection of books. They even have a loyalty program where you get 15% off your purchase after you buy 10 books.

Novelette is such a fun bookstore that is tucked away in Nashville. This is one of my friend's favorite bookshops and I'm so happy that she brought me here on my recent visit to Nashville. The shop is on the smaller side, but is packed to the gills with books. The color scheme is bright and colorful, so you can't help but be happy the moment you walk in. The are so many books to look at and they're separated by genre for easy browsing. This shop has a wide selection of books by queer authors that can be hard to find elsewhere - not to mention the selection of super cute stickers and bookmarks! If you need a good book and dose of serotonin, definitely stop by Novelette!

I visited Novelette with my friend this past weekend when I was back in Nashville for a wedding. She said I would love it, and she was right! It's a small but wonderful bookstore - one that prides itself on having a highly curated selection of books by diverse authors. It's small but more inclusive than much larger bookstores! I quickly found a book I wanted to take with me to read on the plane home! This smallish bookstore is so well stocked that it's easy to find something to read quickly! Stop by and support a local bookstore that is purposeful, intentional, friendly, comfortable, inclusive, and just CUTE. Check it out. Small but mighty!

In a repurposed space, this book shop is nestled to serve those searching for particular types of books. I LOVED this children's book that I stumbled across.

If you love this place, then you totally understand the hype to it however, if you're like me and…read moreyou were introduced to this from another person who absolutely adores it, but you don't care for places like this you find it confusing. So this is a massive bookstore, music store, video store, toy store that specializes in buying used items and reselling them. So if you have an aversion to musty dirty used items, this is not your place. Which I happen to have. However, this is not McKay's fault. It is a great place to offload things you don't need and get a little cash on the side. I have a touch of sensory bias, which is why it's difficult for me to enjoy it. But I totally understand why others do. If you are planning on selling stuff, make sure you get there early. If not, when they open there will be a line not of people wanting to sell stuff just people wanting to get in there to check out anything new that came in the night before. It is always busy so do not expect to come and it not be packed. If that is an issue for you probably not your place. But a big plus is the parking lot is absolutely massive. You will find a parking spot regardless of how busy it is. And to that I give it five stars.

There's no pricing system based on book condition, which would be nice. You may find a book in fair condition and pay the same amount for the same book in excellent condition. Customer service was great as always.

Pricing placement inconsistent. Some are written inside the cover. Some are on stickers stuck to the cover. Leather bound books in antique cases and stacks of old maps facing external windows and exposed to direct sunlight Clerk was loudly speculating on what another customer might have stolen or damaged the second he left after speaking to them. Came up besides me to peer out the windows muttering as she wondered which way he went. Owner loudly speaking at length on the phone about the brilliance of Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, famous ignorant brute. Audible from every part of the store. Children's books were only kept in the furthest sections from the door and counter, on the top two shelves. Shelves and sections poorly marked. I asked the clerk where I could find anything by Robert E. Howard. She said she didn't know where anything was in here and brought me to ask the owner. When I asked where to find anything by Robert Howard, he just sneered at me and asked what kind of author that was. I explained he was a fantasy and historical fiction author and contemporary of Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose works I had been able to find. The owner waved me away and said at the end of the aisle there were a few fantasy books but he usually doesn't keep that kind of thing. We were standing next to a leather bound collection of stories of the Knights of the Round Table. When I got to the directed section, there was a single hardback collection of Harry Potter stacked neatly and a few produce boxes of 1965-1985 pulp science fiction novels, mostly missing their covers, haphazardly stacked on top of each other and bending and warping the books underneath. The shelf next to it was empty. Ends of shelves were crowded with printed out memes taped up in place, some self-congratulatory about being one of the few people in this day and age who still read, some fart jokes, some complaining about President Biden, and some suggesting that there were more white slaves captured and brought from Persia than black slaves brought from Africa. They have a lot of old and rare books, yes, but they don't take care of them, do not preserve collections consistently, do not sort their books into accessible formats, and do not provide a welcoming environment for incoming patrons.

The hours are somewhat limited and generally speaking, the proprietor and employees are somewhat less than welcoming. It's a Nashville icon, well worth visiting...oh, make sure never to read the Nashville Scene article from the early 2000's about alleged buying of stolen books by the owner. His ethics seem a little squishy. But again, if you love old books, visit.
