This is a spacious on campus book store that is upstairs and downstairs. They have several school items and the books you may need. They offer limited parking in the front and it's near some great places. The store is well lit. The customer service is lacking. When you enter you are not greeted and while shopping there is no one there to help. Be braced to figure things out on your own. There are staff working, but they appear focused on conversations or tasks. The prices are a bit high but they offer a limited clearance area. They have a nice general book area with tables and a kids section as well. Hope you enjoy.

This is a great book store that is part of Vanderbilt. I went here because I wanted to get sweatshirts and t shirts for my family. The employees were super helpful and there were many to choose from. I love Champion products and they had them so it worked well! Also if you download their app you get 20% off the most expensive item- so that helped a lot! They have two floors and the clothing is upstairs and that was good. I had a chance to peruse the items and look through each area carefully. Clean store too!

One of the reasons I go to Barnes and Noble in general is they are dog friendly. I was told by the manager that this location is not.

Good service, awesome clothing selection for Vandy students, alumni, and fans, and a good book selection.

If you love this place, then you totally understand the hype to it however, if you're like me and…read moreyou were introduced to this from another person who absolutely adores it, but you don't care for places like this you find it confusing. So this is a massive bookstore, music store, video store, toy store that specializes in buying used items and reselling them. So if you have an aversion to musty dirty used items, this is not your place. Which I happen to have. However, this is not McKay's fault. It is a great place to offload things you don't need and get a little cash on the side. I have a touch of sensory bias, which is why it's difficult for me to enjoy it. But I totally understand why others do. If you are planning on selling stuff, make sure you get there early. If not, when they open there will be a line not of people wanting to sell stuff just people wanting to get in there to check out anything new that came in the night before. It is always busy so do not expect to come and it not be packed. If that is an issue for you probably not your place. But a big plus is the parking lot is absolutely massive. You will find a parking spot regardless of how busy it is. And to that I give it five stars.

I was so excited to get back to McKay's for the first time in years. I was completely taken aback…read moreby the prices of books here now. Many books I found were overpriced for used books. There's no pricing system based on book condition, which would be nice. You may find a book in fair condition and pay the same amount for the same book in excellent condition. Customer service was great as always.

Pricing placement inconsistent. Some are written inside the cover. Some are on stickers stuck to the cover. Leather bound books in antique cases and stacks of old maps facing external windows and exposed to direct sunlight Clerk was loudly speculating on what another customer might have stolen or damaged the second he left after speaking to them. Came up besides me to peer out the windows muttering as she wondered which way he went. Owner loudly speaking at length on the phone about the brilliance of Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, famous ignorant brute. Audible from every part of the store. Children's books were only kept in the furthest sections from the door and counter, on the top two shelves. Shelves and sections poorly marked. I asked the clerk where I could find anything by Robert E. Howard. She said she didn't know where anything was in here and brought me to ask the owner. When I asked where to find anything by Robert Howard, he just sneered at me and asked what kind of author that was. I explained he was a fantasy and historical fiction author and contemporary of Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose works I had been able to find. The owner waved me away and said at the end of the aisle there were a few fantasy books but he usually doesn't keep that kind of thing. We were standing next to a leather bound collection of stories of the Knights of the Round Table. When I got to the directed section, there was a single hardback collection of Harry Potter stacked neatly and a few produce boxes of 1965-1985 pulp science fiction novels, mostly missing their covers, haphazardly stacked on top of each other and bending and warping the books underneath. The shelf next to it was empty. Ends of shelves were crowded with printed out memes taped up in place, some self-congratulatory about being one of the few people in this day and age who still read, some fart jokes, some complaining about President Biden, and some suggesting that there were more white slaves captured and brought from Persia than black slaves brought from Africa. They have a lot of old and rare books, yes, but they don't take care of them, do not preserve collections consistently, do not sort their books into accessible formats, and do not provide a welcoming environment for incoming patrons.

The hours are somewhat limited and generally speaking, the proprietor and employees are somewhat less than welcoming. It's a Nashville icon, well worth visiting...oh, make sure never to read the Nashville Scene article from the early 2000's about alleged buying of stolen books by the owner. His ethics seem a little squishy. But again, if you love old books, visit.
