I stumbled across this bakery after having a delicious meal at the restaurant next door. I wanted something sweet and there was a huge selection here. Very busy in the morning around 9:00 am. Fully packed seating area with a lot of espresso on the go. They have a grocery area, a seating area, pie area, pastries area, bread area, savoury treats area, deli area and cheese area. They serve sandwiches as well. Ordered the chicken circular pastry which I believe they called empanada. It has a sweet slightly crunchy crust with a very tasty filling. It was served cold though. Also ordered all the croquettes available. I like the square one with an orange filling. I love that they have ten different types. Reminds me of when I was in Lisbon. I used to buy these puffs at caldense bakery in Mississauga but they only had three types, now they don't even have it. Also bought the sweet bun for 0.79 cents each which was fluffy, glossy and good. You do not pay for the food at the food counter, but rather at the cashier by the door. I think you can pay at the seating area if you were to sit in that area. The cashier had a bucket of water with a wet towel on the counter which was unappetizing as I left. A wet towel in a bucket must breed bacteria. I hope they don't use that towel to wipe things because it's just sitting stale there. read more

This is one of the oldest Portuguese bakeries in the area, and they are still amazing. I go to the bakery for........natas, who wouldn't. They still make an amazing Parten de Nata. They have a lot of other bakery goods and groceries. read more

We stopped by very quickly for custard tarts to snack on (2 regular, 2 chocolate chip). This place is located at a plaza right by Cawthra Road and Burnhamthorpe Road, in the same plaza as Marconi Pizza. Overall, the tarts weren't bad but weren't the best (I preferred the natas from Caldense Bakery). The filling was eggier and creamier than most, and the pastry/crust wasn't crispy and very, very slightly soggy. It was acceptable, and the chocolate chip natas were quite sweet and delicious - but not the best I've had. When I'm in the area again, I'll stop by, but I wouldn't go out of my way to specifically visit. read more

There was a nice girl behind the pastry counter with a substantial line working alone. She advised the deli meat is attended by someone else. In the back you could see 3 employees talking loud and gossiping. After waiting 5 minutes at the deli counter I decided to approach the employees talking. I asked if someone was working the deli counter and the female directed me to the counter and started helping someone else. She was VERY rude to me and I saw her being rude to another customer because they dared to ask how fresh the pastry was she was buying. Not going back here. Had an appt at the bank early on Saturday morning didn't get a chance to get coffee so we popped in for a snack and a coffee. Alot of options here sandwiches, fresh bread, pastries, cold cuts, etc. The coffee was dark and very tasty. We also got these puffs they have at the counter. the shrimp and chicken were sold out so she went to the back to check if they had made any They did so we got three of each Figured they must be sold out for a reason They were soooo good Would eat those on a daily lol Only criticism is that they were cold. Our favourite place to buy the shrimp and cod puffs. Love the ones with the olives and cod fish. We always meet up with a buddy of our's here at this place and chit chat about our daily lives and politics. Lol. They've got the big screen TV playing CP24 as well. Pastries and goat cheese are my regular purchases plus some Sumol of course. Nice place for a quick coffee and dessert after a long day. Young staff who are also friendly and pleasant. read more

A(nother) pastry craving had me stop at two bakeries this morning on the way to work. I randomly passed by Nova, saw their sign, and decided to stop in to see what they had. I already had a chocolate croissant and doughnut in hand from Truscott Bakery, but too much butter is never a bad thing (right?). I'm going to preface my review by saying that I had a good experience, but I've only tried ONE thing here: the apple turnover. Everything did look good though. Since I've only tried one thing, and had a monster pastry craving at the time, I'm going to give it 3 stars for now (it's probably 3 and a half) and I'll update when I make another trip. Hey, what can I say, I'm like the teacher you love to hate, I don't give easy marks :) First, it's fairly large for a bakery, they sandwiches and hot food, complete with a sit down section, a small grocery section and a good num ber of pastries and baked breads. Pastries were about $1.35 for each (and most of it looked great: cinnamon twists, strudles, turnovers, pies looked awesome, eclaires and various puff pastries, tarts). Bagels were $0.50. After tasting their apple turnover, I'm going to go back and try some of their other offerings, because it was pretty good! I microwaved the turnover when I got into the office (we don't have a toaster oven, unfortunately) but it was still really good, the crust was flaky and crispy and the filling with apple-y and sweet. Their breads smelled and looked delicious so I'll have to pick up a loaf of something next time 'round. As mentioned above, pies also look really good so I'm going to have to go carb-heavy one of these days and just try out some of their other things. It was busy (especially for 9:15 am on a Tuesday) so the turnover here must be pretty high and I assume it's fairly popular. I'll be back and I'll update my rating accordingly. read more

So I went to this place for an afternoon snack and it's in a bit of a discrete plaza. This plaza is very unique as there are 3 deli/meat shops out of the 6 or 7 stores that are there and they all seemed very busy. I had no idea what I was getting, but I heard the fried food was good, so I just got one of each - my fave line (thank god I'm not super loaded or I would go into a car dealership and say I'm not sure what's good, just give me one of each) and a Portuguese tart. I've tried 3 of them so far, one meat, one tuna and one shrimp. The tuna is okay, but it tastes funny (but doesn't all tuna? lol). The meat is average. The shrimp ones are really good. All and all, good value for the fried foods as they were all under $1.00 each. As for the Portuguese tart? Wowzers! I've had these tarts before from an Asian grocery store and they sucked, but here, they are so good. It's like a cold creme brule with a flaky outside. So friggin good. Overall verdict: may be my new weekend breakfast hangout since it's only a 5 minute drive away. Maybe I will try the coffee tomorrow. Looking forward to it. read more

The Napoleon cake is too sweet, the cream layer is too thick. The pastry is too much butter and the flavour is like burnt pastry. Compare with Napoleon cakes from Yummy market, this is much much worse. Sorry, but their pastry is not as good as I expect. read more

Nova is the best! They have a huge variety of breads, cakes and treats. It's so hard to pick one dessert! They also do made to order sandwiches and have a coffee bar on site. You can get your caffeine fix for under $2, which is amazing because I'd gladly pay more for their smooth, dark roast. My go to order is a cafe au lait with a strawberry tart or egg napkin. Nova Bakery is hands down my go-to destination for Portuguese Egg Tarts. The delicate tart surrounded by a flaky shell filled with a dense flavourful egg filling. The pricing is reasonable at about 1.5$ for small baked goods such as the tart. The have a varied selection of other baked goods and breads that I have yet to try. They also carry several prepackaged cheeses and meats. The service is quick and you can usually pop in and out in under 5minutes. My only qualms is with the small parking lot that experiences high traffic. read more

I've eaten at the Nova Era bakeries in Toronto for years. A Yelper mentioned that it was a bit of a culture shock for her there - newbies don't know 'the drill' and people don't help. Same here. Welcome to the world of Portuguese cafés. I stood in the wrong line for a tosta mista (grilled ham and cheese, then had to line up on the far left. The 4 employees on that side were very busy. The oldest lady who manned the coffee machine near the cash register would shout out, "Next!" I didn't know she meant me so I just stood there and waited for her. Meanwhile, people behind me would shout out their orders over my head! Eventually, I figured out what to do. After enjoying my sandwich and coffee, I got back in the pastry line (far right) and chose a bunch of the croquettes with 1) codfish with olives and 2) shrimp. Scrumptious. Also got some mini egg tarts for my old lady friends. It's nice that they make the egg tarts in 2 sizes as well as chocolate ones. read more

Nova is pretty awesome! Just like another reviewer wrote, it's like a one-stop mini grocery, bakery and deli. It always smells incredible as soon as you hit your foot in the door. All their breads are always fresh and so flavourful; although, Grandma's buns rule, especially when they are piping hot. The made-to-order sandwiches are remarkable. You can choose whatever bun/ bread you like from the bakery and they'll prepare it just the way you like - huge portions too. You can also buy a Portuguese cheese there called Sao Jorge - kind of like Gouda meeting Gruyère - great with a full-bodied red wine. My husband claims the Portuguese tarts are some of the best he's ever tried. I haven't had much from the pastry section as I don't really have a sweet tooth. I have, however, tried the cod fish fritters but I found them a bit dry and a little saltier than others I've tried. This place is pretty big, and offers a lot of selection when it comes to baked goods, cheese, and breads. They have homemade pies for a decent price, and they are absolutely delicious. Their cannolis and butter tarts are spectacular, and their Portuguese egg tarts are something they are know for. The cheesy bread sticks are also a really big hit if you want something savoury. They have a tiny patio area out front too, but it's not the nicest. The price point is also quite fair. You might miss it driving by, since it's tucked away in a corner of a plaza, but definitely a hidden gem. read more

We received some cookies as a gift from a friend. They are awesome. I expected dried hard stale butter cookies with little flavour. Worst service ever ! Thanks Nova Bakery for ruining my niece's 2nd birthday cake. We preordered a birthday cake and came to pick up her cake this am after waiting about 20 min they brought us a ruined cake. It looked like It was put together with scraps of cake from days before , the icing on cake was cracked , instead of writing a very simple Happy Birthday the idiot cake decorator had Hammy Birthday. It was not decorated as we had instructed either. The manager at your store didn't care and simply said " sorry guys " with no empathy for the fact that they ruined the cake. She did offer us a whole $15 discount. We will never be using this bakery again. Worst customer service ever. They could care less that they ruined a cake for a 2 year old birthday party. read more

Hands down one of the most delicious bakeries in Toronto, and with an incredibly friendly staff. They have incredibly delicious Portuguese tarts (i recommend the almond tarts, but they're all great!) and a selection of fresh-every-morning croissants and pastries as well. I was searching for a special cake to celebrate a retirement. I didn't need a custom cake but was looking for something small, simple but better than you grocery store variety. I purchased their vanilla cake with custard filling. It has a thin layer of whipped icing on the top and a thin layer of vanilla chocolate on the top of that. Unfortunately it looks better than it tastes. Very plain; it needs more icing and flavouring. The price was right ($13.00) but really boring. I really could have done better buying a La Rocca cake at my local grocery store. read more

This is one of my one-to-go places to get my bread, deli and of course SWEETS! I just love this place! There is a wide range of different types of pastries and breads here. As I like to get their French Bread and Baguette here. Also for sweets, you must try out their Portuguese tarts! They are so amazingly delicious. I always get half a dozen whenever I come here. It's a great sweet to snack on once in a while! Also, you must try out their scones (I love the one with the raisins!) - which are only made on fri, sat and sun. The deli part of the bakery is just like any deli from your local supermarket. However, the advantages is that most of the times the deli from here is WAY CHEAPER than your local supermarket, so it's better off saving a few bucks right ? Not to mention, they also have this cafe by the end of the deli and it's extremely affordable - bagels, sandwiches, etc. If you by any chance go there, you must try out their coffee! I am going to base this review on their "apple" pie which I bought 2 days ago.This is the WORST apple pie I have ever tasted.Basically there is no apple inside....It is a gooey substance of unknown origin.There is no taste of apple inside.I don't know who the baker is but they should fire him/her.I had people over and I made them taste it and they just spit it out.I plan to call them tomorrow and ask for the manager and get some answers because this is unacceptable. read more

HORRIBLE Bakery/Experience/Owner I picked up some pastries and cakes at Nova Bakery this past Saturday for a party. People at the party bit into the pastries and began spitting them out because they had green mold inside. This was very embarrassing. Yesterday, I took the pastries/cakes back to the bakery, and the owner was a big jerk about it. First he tried to deny that they weren't his (even though I brought back his signature pastries in the original nova bakery box). Then he wanted a receipt (c'mon who keeps their bakery receipts, give me a break). He didn't apologize. I told him I bought 10 pastries for $17. He came back with a $10 bill and just threw it at me. He said, if I wanted the rest of the money, I should come back with the receipt. I didn't waste my time to go back there for the money. I went there seeking an explanation and maybe even an apology for making me look really bad at the party. I was shocked that someone who has been in business for so long, lacks basic customer service and social skills. This guy should stop making garbage cakes in the back and try being a cashier and maybe he'll learn how to show people respect. Nova is a nice little bakery/deli. It smells like fresh bread all the time. Some of my favourites are the shrimp puffs. (there fried pockets filled will shrimps and potatoes) The "mista". ( a bun toasted with loads of havarti cheese and ham) All of there pastries and buns are amazing and there cakes are very moist. (they do custom cakes for baptisms,weddings and so on) possibly one of the the most affordable bakery's in Mississauga. Sadly there outdoor space is just a plastic table overlooking the parking lot.
