The building and view were beautiful, and the staff was very nice. However, neither my wife nor I really enjoyed any of the four wines we tasted. That's not to say they were bad wines, but this was the only winery where we didn't buy a bottle on our trip up here to taste wines. We also got a charcuterie board, which had lots of tasty bites. We saw them turn away 20 year wine club members because it was only an hour left before closing. Three staff members standing around with glasses & dishes to be cleared from the tables. They sat us & let us know they now do a 'self tasting.' Here's a glass & 3 pours. You're on your own, no tasting notes, no staff to tell you what you're tasting. Last week we took a wine-tasting vacation in Walla Walla and had a wonderful time! Northstar was our favorite of the four wineries we visited. Our server was knowledgeable, pleasant, and polite. The grounds are lovely. Really nice charcuterie plate, with a variety of flavors. The wines are amazing! I actually like a charcuterie plate because I will try different flavors with the wines to see what I would consider pairing at home. What does this taste like with that? Maybe I'm unconventional, but it works for me and I know what I like. Also, I love little goodies like fun books, chocolates, etc. Dress it up and make it fun for us, we love it! Northstar had a few nice displays and I took home a pretty, collectable book with our order. I do love pretty books! The nicest thing they did that really made me feel special was they sent me home with a Mother's Day gift, a couple of glasses and coasters. When someone goes out of their way to make an experience extra special, I think they deserve recognition. The wine was okay but my group of 7 girlfriends came here today and there were three Cornhole sets not being played and we walked 10 feet away from our table to play Cornhole and were told we couldn't play because it was part of the "cabana package" all of which were empty and not reserved. Jeff did a fantastic job of making us feel at home, educating us on the history of the area and Northstar, and guiding our blending experience and tour of the facility. I REALLY enjoyed this winery, I am not sure why it has an average 3 star. I realize that it was bought out but a bigger company (can't remember the name...) but everything about this place was great. The woman serving us was super sweet and friendly (all the staff were!) and we came in very close to closing so it was so nice of them to still serve us. The venue is gorgeous, the grounds are beautiful, the wine was delicious, they had snacks, and the tasting was affordable for 6 tastings. I would definitely recommend coming here... they also do parties and a class where you make your own wine. The couple next to us had just done this and were super happy and excited to tell us all about it. This place deserves 5 stars for sure! read more

This is by far my favorite winery in Walla Walla. We had a wonderful experience at their tasting room, we sat outside on the patio with a great view! We ended up sitting at the tasting room for at least an hour enjoying all 8 wines and paced very well. Northstar is the kind of winery where it's hard to choose one bottle to purchase because you can't remember which wine was best (because they're all so good!). Northstar has a unique Blending Experience where you get to act like a winemaker and blend your own wine. The experience starts off with an overview of the different wines, soils and terrain, then continues to sampling of six different wines. You pour your own glasses directly from the barrels - careful, it's easy to overdo it... unless that was your plan, actually, in which case have fun! The barrels for us consisted of four regional merlots as well as a cab sauv and a petit verdot. Participants then mix the wines in their desired porportions using their personal chemistry sets, create the perfect wine, then pour a full bottle and cork it to take it home. I was lucky enough to receive this experience as a birthday gift, and it was a blast. Our blending guide (and at times task master) was very well-informed and a pleasure to work with. I'd definitely recommend checking this out if you have a group looking for a Walla Walla wine experience that's a little less traditional and a little more hands-on. read more

This review is for our experience at the freshly restarted "Fights and Bites" program. The tasting session consists of a short tour of the grounds, a visit to the cellar and a 3 course wine and food pairing. The wines featured were all Walla Walla area wines and the food was also sourced locally. Chef Penny Addison (of Cameo Heights renown) blew us away with her pork shoulder dish and incredible Panna Cotta desert. The wines paired wonderfully with the food. This tasting was a blast. We were there for a second time last weekend 5/4/19 there were 16 of us and the minute we walked in the girl who was checking people in at the door looked at us rolled her eyes and was so rude to all of us (we are all 30 something and belonging to many different wine clubs and are always respectful and kind) however we were greeted with hostility. I actually had a similar experience the year prior but brushed it off. I will NEVER go back here! Read the other reviews I am not the only one. Me and my girlfriends came in for the mimosa brunch and a tasting. While the staff was friendly, the brunch was not worth the price. We were very disappointed in the food and the staff disappeared once our food was on the table. This was our third stop on our trip to Walla Walla for our anniversary and they did not disappoint. (Saturday 4pm). I had been here before a few years ago and knew I had to return because it was beautiful. The table setting was pretty with my name and the rose and the other small details. I knew this would be my favorite stop of the day. We had two women serving us, mainly a young woman of color, and another woman of color. I'm a woman of color myself and always love being in like company when it comes to wine. Just very genuinely kind and happy. They made sure we were never empty for longer than 3 minutes. At the end of our tasting, they poured us some bubbles since it was the end of the day. We enjoyed every single pour of the tasting! We walked away with two bottles- Stella Blanca (bonus pour) and the 2012 Merlot. If there was a location in Woodinville, we would be members for sure! We'll be back the next time we're in. Any fan of Merlot knows about Northstar - it is simply outstanding and worth the price without question. The facility itself is one of the best in WW, Napa, Sonoma, Oregon or Santa Barbara. So it sounds like I am love with the place right well don't move so fast. I was a big fan until I visited their wine tasting room in Walla Walla. The 20-something little snit that was pouring on the afternoon of Saturday May 12th needs a little lesson in manners and customer service. in addition she could stand an attitude adjustment! While this is a fantastic place and the wine is equal I would not recommend their tasting room as long as "little miss bitchy Betty" continues to frown her way the day and put a damper on some good customers fun in WW! read more

I noticed in previous reviews that Northstar had a wide variety of responses. We decided to forego our normal pattern of following Yelper's advice based on a personal review of someone we met at the inn we were staying. They had been in Walla Walla over a week visiting various wineries and they recommended only two as a must see. Northstar was one of those. Wine is a very individual tasting preference which is why I try not to review the actual wines, but more the tasting experience. Our Northstar experience was exceptional. We sat on the patio in beautiful Washington weather and tasted (and re-tasted) their wines with our friends overlooking their vineyard. Our server provided plenty of information about the wines, the production, and the winery. If she didn't have the answer to a specific question, she found someone who did. I admit liking the wines and it pushed my review to 5 stars but this would have been a 4 star rating even if we hated the wines. A beautiful setting worthy of your time, I highly recommend this as a destination in your Walla Walla winery visits. read more

This winery is hidden away in it's own vineyard! Very beautiful property with a great patio and lawn. They have games available for your groups or kids, like bocce ball or crochet. My group of 7 sat out on the patio with plenty of room. They provide a tasting menu for each person, which was nice so we didn't need to share. We had about 8-9 tasting and they were very tasty. I liked that the "pourer" told us where the wine was from, but didn't go overboard about each wine unless we asked. The Merlots are amazing! I would love to come back for the "create your own" wine bottle! I think that sounds so fun and an amazing experience. I didn't see any good options, but I'm sure they were available. Maybe pack a snack. They don't have shaded parking, so be careful what you leave in the car. read more

I have to say, I'm not a huge fan of northstar. You drive up this windy road with beautiful views of walla walla, and come to a cute winery with a deck. Thats where the good part ends. The wines themselves are bland, something I'd expect after pulling a $15 special off the wall at QFC, not something that should be priced at $40-$50 like theirs were. Secondly, the service was incredibly poor. I realize it was an hour before close, but listening to the ladies talk about their night out partying and corresponding hangovers instead of pouring us wine or answering our questions was not my idea of a good time. That was the weekend the wine bloggers were in town too...wonder what they must of thought of this place. read more

This winery is a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the bit of exploration to find it. Beautiful facility. Lovely living room-ish tasting room with one of the best views in Walla Walla! There's a spacious patio and plenty of room for large groups. The staff is professional, courteous and knowledgeable about their product. The wine at Northstar is not cheap, but you know what they say, "You get what you pay for." And the wine... Oh my. Very nice. Almost 100% French Oak. I'm a bit of an aroma snob and 7 out of the 8 wines I tasted today just sent me to another world. (Wasn't a fan of the Syrah, as it's coming out of American oak.) These wines are a prime example of what a difference French Oak can make in a wine. The folks at Northstar REALLY know what they're doing. Whether you are just starting to learn about wine, or are a long time pro, this winery is a MUST DO when you're in Walla Walla. $5 tasting fee is waived when you purchase a bottle, which you will do. If you're into Merlot, this is the place for you! They're owned by Chateau Ste. Michelle so they have big dollars but their wines reflect more individual flavors like a smaller winery would produce. The building and grounds are stunning- great picnic location! We went during Walla Walla's Autumn Release Weekend and Northstar was packed the afternoon we tasted there. For that event, there was an $8 tasting fee, the highest we paid while in Walla Walla but we were treated with a warm welcome by a sweet older gentleman who spoke a bit about the winery and showed us to a perch above the processing facility where we could watch the punchdowns as they happened. Next we were given glasses and directed to a long counter that looked a lot like a hotel check-in for our first pours. From there we passed by a HUGE food spread and three piece music band to more wines, mostly merlots. We seriously could have spent the entire afternoon there and eaten and drank to our hearts content! All the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, parking was a breeze and there was still plenty of space to move around, even with the large crowd. We were able to keep our glasses too, a bonus in today's wine tasting experience. These were the ONLY glasses we returned home with after three full days of wine tasting in Walla Walla. Next time we're in WW, we'll make the effort to return to Northstar Winery. read more

What would have been a pleasant view and experience was made unpleasant by the lack of hospitality of one of the employees. Prior to my career as an attorney, I worked for many years in high-end hospitality so I tend to be both understanding of limitations of staff due to factors outside of their control, like local laws, company policies, or being understaffed. However, I never find outright discourteous behavior acceptable. My boyfriend and I were enjoying a wine tasting weekend, and I was interested in purchasing an interest in a plot of grapes, when we arrived at NorthStar. It was crowded around the front counter, but we were promptly greeted at the door. We were pleased to see that two different flights were offered since this would give us more opportunity to try the various wines and see what we might be interested in purchasing. The tasting room was busy, so when wine was spilled down my boyfriend's leg while being served and no apology was offered I tried to excuse it and asked questions about their wine-making process and the art for sale in the tasting room. Near the end of our visit, it appeared that they were trying to shut down, though about an hour was left before their closing time (and a tour bus arrived as I was leaving). When we finished the flight, I requested that we have the flight from Northstar's other region of production. The employee refused, saying something along the lines of it would be a lot of wine and she was going to have to say no. It was surprising to me that a customer would not be allowed to have another tasting of a totally different type of wine in order to know what wines they wished to purchase when an entire flight totaled a glass of wine, if that. I understand that there is liability in over-serving, but this was only our second winery of the day and we had been quietly enjoying our wines. There was no basis for refusing to serve us other than just not wanting to, whether it be because the employee/manager wanted to go home early or, as my boyfriend thought, we were being profiled for being younger that the target demographic and the employee didn't think the economic payoff would be worth providing us with a flight of Northstar's other wines. It was an abrupt, disappointing end to what could have been a pleasant experience and left a sour taste in my mouth. The wine was good, but I would have bought much more than a bottle if I had been provided with warm service. I will happily recommend other wineries and tasting rooms in Walla Walla, but will never recommend Northstar, nor will I return. read more
