NorthStar installed the following equipment in my house: 2 Yale smart locks, garage door opener, window sensors, door sensors, glass break sensor, and control pad. What I like: - NorthStar customer service seems competent and helpful. My salesman/point of contact is responsive and helps me configure the smart devices. - The smart locks and garage door opener are convenient. - All devices can be controlled from a single app, very convenient. - The devices operate on both wifi and 'cellular data' such that they will continue to work if your home's wifi does down. What I dislike: - The price for on going service is too expensive. The contracts are quite long, mine is 42 months. There is a $1 surcharge to charge the monthly service to a credit card. - The glass break detector triggered when I was fanning open a garbage bag, the police sent me a bill for a false alarm. I was not happy about that. Things to Note: - I have not had a security incident in the 2 months of having the system so I cannot confirm or deny the usefulness of the security monitoring system. Conclusion: - It is impossible to deny the convenience of the smart home devices. But in my opinion, it is not worth the expensive monthly service bill. read more

If I could give this company a NEGATIVE ten, I would. They have automatically renewed out contract Twice because I forgot that I had to give written notice sixty days before expiration. This is plain extortion. They do not send reminders, they do not give you a chance to cancel they only say, "It's in the contract that you signed. Do you want me to send you a copy?" We are living on social security only and I have recently had to go back to work at age 73, but none of this mattered to them. So now I have to pay this bill for another 18 months. It's over $1200.00. Hate is an ugly word, but I certainly hate the ethics that they lack as a company. Do not do business with these frauds. read more

Deceptive sales practices starting you out of very low monthly rate and then jacking it up as the time went by I would admit I didn't look at the fine contract the fine print in the contract but there was no way of getting out of it would not recommend their customer service either had issues that took weeks to resolve read more

This is the letter I sent to this company (didn't have the option of no stars): I am writing to inform you that I have directed my bank (Wells Fargo) to cease making payments to your company. I have tried unsuccessfully for several years to cancel my contract with Northstar Alarm, but to no avail. I have sent letters and made telephone calls at the appropriate times to get my service stopped. I have followed the instructions given to me by your employees who answer the phone and yet you continue to take my money and am told that I signed the extension (which I would not have done knowingly if I was trying to stop the service). I have discovered that you are using docusign and are making no effort to contact me. According to your documentation, I am once again stuck in a contract that does not end until late 2027. I have never used the alarm and so any money spent on it is a waste. I am on a fixed income and the amount given to you is significant at this point. I am aware that I have a grace period before you "turn me over" to a collection agency. Please, cease using using deceptive trade practices and cancel my contract. I have no intention of paying any more money. read more

To NorthStar, Your 5 year contract is a sham, especially the auto-renewal clause. Your salesman glazed over it and made it seem as if we relocated it would be easy to terminate or transfer. We moved and had approx. 18 months left after paying for your service for 3.5 years. The buyers of our home read your sordid reviews so they didn't want to assume the contract. We didn't blame them. Your equipment was consistently out and you only had one overworked service tech in Austin that was hardly ever available. Read your reviews on the BBB site, ScamAlert and elsewhere. This will inform you why so many of your former customers dislike your co. Improve your professionalism and ethics. read more

NorthStar Alarm Services - One of many necessary lawsuits that should be filed against NorthStar IMO - Security Systems Near Me

Research this company!! A door knocker told me they could install cameras, a new doorbell and alarm for $48 per month. I went forward because I was having problems with an autistic kid in my neighborhood that kept coming into my yard. I was told by the police that I should get a camera. Immediately after they installed the cameras, NOTHING WORKED! I had their tech out 8-9 times. I had Cox out 10-20 times. Everyone blaming the other. The Northstar tech stopped responding and I finally broke down and had a mesh wifi system installed and I called Northstar directly, told them what was going on and that I could not get the cameras to work. They sent out another tech ($99) who immediately told me that I had too many cameras and that I had been taken advantage of. His fix was to unplug 3 cameras..... So now I have 3 cameras that I am paying for that I cannot use. I was told that the alarm system would work with my Alexa devices. That I could say "show me my front camera" or talk to people through the doorbell... ALL LIES. It does NOT work with Alexa. You cannot see the doorbell and if someone does ring the bell, you have to log into the app and talk through a 2 way radio. After a month, I removed the Skybell and reinstalled my ring doorbell because at least it works with Alexa and you can talk and listen to people at the door. They lied about the bill too. That $48 bill is actually almost $70 and the equipment is almost $4000. Just avoid this company!!! read more

NorthStar Alarm Services - How they fix the issue of too many cameras - Security Systems Near Me

SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM If I can give them a negative 100 I would. This company is an absolute scam! Stay away and find another provider. I have signed for a 5 year contract at a vulnerable stage in my life. That was the biggest mistake. The stupid system only worked for a year. It's been broken. I called to have someone trouble shoot me on fixing it but they said it would cost extra to have someone fix it. I just waited till my contract expired and no one told me when I called it automatically renews for another 18months. They want me to pay for something that's useless to me and I paid off my 5 year contract already. STAY AWAY! There is better companies out there that don't need to do business like this. Choose wisely before signing this contract. read more

PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! WOW!! I can't even understand how this place has all these good reviews! We have had nothing but trouble with the service and the equipment! Once we decided to move, we looked into cancelling our service and they wanted the rest of our five year contract payment up front to cancel. We couldn't even negotiate a smaller cancellation fee. They told us that we could transfer the system, but we would need to get new equipment, since our old system wasn't working properly and they were gonna charge us a whole new set of fees for that as well. "Oh but this is standard practice, all alarm companies do this," they said. No they don't, we asked around. Each company we talked to said that is not proper practice. FYI, ADT has filed a lawsuit against NorthStar due to their practices, since they have gotten many complaints about them and their contracts. So we begrudgingly waited and payed for a service we weren't even gonna use. Finally, this year our contract was up and we thought, ok we will no longer have to pay them. Yeah we were wrong, because they have to have it in writing, even though they knew full well we wanted to cancel and were told it was in there notes, that was another lie. We even called a month prior to the end of our contract and could not get anyone to talk to. Finally we got through and were told a manager would call us back to handle the cancelation. They waited until after our date to contact us. Now we sit here with a full new five year contract, for a house we no longer own, equipment we don't use and the reason is due to poor customer service and no proper way to contact anyone at that place. "But this is how all companies conduct business and sorry you couldn't talk to one of our representatives to resolve this issue." They do not want to help you, they don't care and hide behind legal loop holes to just take your money in any way they can and trying to deal with them is like beating a dead horse. read more

ROB HARRIS,PRES,KENT GRIFFIN,VP, Dan Noble,COO, Nick Nelson Cust Se rvice, Jared Parrish, CCO Attention Gentlemen: Your customer service rep Davis was afraid to forward my call to his supervisor because he was lying to me about my account. HORRIBLE company with even worse customer service. I can never get anyone at this company to help me. The company NEVER answers customer calls. Matter of fact, this is my second consecutive day calling the company for service. Yesterday, NO ONE answered the customer care line. Today, I've been waiting for 35 minutes for a rep to answer my call. 35 minutes is unacceptable. I guess I'll call again tomorrow. I will cancel as soon as my contract is finished. DO NOT CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY! They will provide a product that does not work. BEWARE!!! read more

Awful company when it comes to customer service. I called to cancel 12 months before my contract expired, they noted my account accordingly and can still see where I made that request but refuse to honor my request to cease billing. I paid, in full, for 12 months of service for a house I had sold just to fulfill the contact. Service rep I spoke to, Caden Bowler, reads from a script and has refused to elevate my issue stating "there's not really anyone I can escalate your account to". He actually said that in writing! Talk about bad faith and deceptive business practices, this company actively engages in both. They do not return calls, only respond to an email after 3 attempts and generally care about nothing but taking your money. I have filed a BBB complaint and will continue to let others know Northstar is a disreputable company. read more

If I could zero stars I would. I switched my alarm company because the salesperson was awesome and amazing. The tech who installed the system was amazing. But beware!! If anything ever goes wrong, and you have to call in.... it's WORSE than a nightmare. You're on hold for hours. When you finally get through they try to walk you through troubleshooting and the person on the phone walks you through steps to SEE IF THEY WORK! When you request a technician to just come out and fix it, they tell you it costs $99 to send someone out to fix their s**t! As if the monthly system payments and the equipment bill isn't enough money. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIBLE! Don't use this company. read more

Terrible and a total scam. If I could give NO stars I would. When you sign up they say that the contract is for 5 years. What they never mention is that it is automatically renewed for 18-month periods of which they never notify you of AND they want 6-month written notice AND you can't cancel before the end of the 18 months. Absolutely ridiculous. I guess they assume people never move?! Also, we moved to a state where they DON'T EVEN OPERATE (no license) and said too bad pay up. The "account manager" was a total rude and condescending ahole. read more

One 2012 evening, an uninvited stranger rang our front door bell and my wife answered the door. She called me over only to face the North Star salesman staring at me. I should have said "Stranger, Danger" but, like a fool, I listened to his pitch. Mr. North Star said that he had a brand new security device for a great price. If I didn't take it then and there, he' offer it to our neighbors, Playing the fool, I fell for his high pressure pitch. The very next day, a North Star tech removed part of our old security system and installed North Star's. He gave us limited instructions about the panel and left. I never knew how the call their customer service or even use most features of the panel. Every now and then we'd have to replace the battery in the panel. Just this April, the battery had to be replaced again. We bought the correct, expensive battery, opened the console and installed the battery, but couldn't close he console. Thus, we were left with no security protection and no way to call North Star. Just a monthly bill.. We were later contacted by someone from North Star. Did he offer to repair the security system of a good customer? Why no. He offered to give us a brand new panel along with a 36 month contract. They sent a tech over to install the new system He did a great job As for his employer...Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Business With North Star. One star for them. read more

If you value your time, peace of mind, and hard earned dollar, DO NOT USE NORTHSTAR ALARM SERVICES FOR ALARM SERVICES. PERIOD. You will get screwed over. It's inevitable. From their lengthy contracts to hideous customer service...nothing good has come from this company, for me. There were so many red flags initially, but I wanted to give them an opportunity because they were so persistent. The first sales rep no called/no showed for the initial installation. He showed at my doorstep a month later as if nothing happened. I told him I wasn't interested. He ran my credit anyway and I filed a complaint w/ the BBB in which no one from NS ever contacted me. Another sales rep shows at my doorstep and my wife tells him I'm not interested. He gets me on the phone at work and I gave in to his persistence and "throw-ins" to earn my business. In 6 months of installation: - I've had more than a half dozen false alarms - The police have shown up at my home. The level of anxiety of being a minority and having to prove ownership of my property thanks to ns is indescribable - I receive weekly "collections emails" for delinquent payment although I have automatic withdrawals set up from day one - I've waited as long as 10+minutes just to be told "the manager" isn't available on 3+ occasions After all of this, ns cannot be trusted. Simply put. Do NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT trust this company for a home alarm system. I used ADT for 2.5 years prior to ns, and I've NEVER had a single of the aforementioned complaint. For the record, I'm still to this day receiving harassing collections emails even though I auto-pay my bill from my bank account monthly. Take a look at the screenshots from my email. Mind you, this has been only 7 months of (horrible) service. read more

I hope I save you money and time. The sales person was excellent and had good intentions but he probably doesn't have the product at his home. We have had the product for one year, give or take. Our neighborhood has break-ins and unfortunately the two times we have experience this, our door didn't work. I've had tech support come out, they do charge to come out. I have the app and the pictures are not great....if the doorbell actually works. It will take a picture when someone rings the doorbell, 2 minutes later - that always gets me! I have pictures with 0 people in the screen. My neighbors across the street hate the product as well. You ARE locked into a contract for the product! $2000-$3000 is the cost to cancel...Do not sign it!!! I promise do not do it. You will regret the decision to go with this company. I'm on hold right now with tech support 15 minutes. Get Ring or Vivent! My mother in law has Vivent and I've seen what it can do. Amazing! Read all the reviews before making this purchase. Honestly, DO NOT do it. I'd put it on my entire family. The review by Sarah G is probably from someone who works there - I promise do not fall for the false reviews! It's the worst. If I could give 0 stars I would. I've never had them send anyone or check in for any safety problems! Look at reviews from every other website - all complain about service. They are not BBB accredited and the reviews that have been "resolved" are response only from the company. Once you wait until your contract is up, there are cancellation fees lmbo! My elderly parents had this service in their home. When my dad passed away we called to cancel the service (Oct 21) and asked what needed to be done, send back equipment or ? and I was told no... fast forward to Feb 22' and I'm still being charged the monthly fees... even tho the home was sold in Dec. After sending in the death cert and the escrow docs we are still paying for service. I agreed to pay for service up to closing date. The account manager, Mason, was rude and not very cooperative. I'm glad our financial institution will take care of the issue... consumers need to be protected from businesses that swindle customers, ESPECIALLY the elderly. read more

This is absolutely the WORST home security you could ever go with! Five years ago we got suckered into a 5 year contract by a door to door salesman who FAILED to tell us about a 5 year contract! Once we signed - we were bound and had no way out unless we payed the OBSCENE amount of money they asked for. Their equipment sucks and about 90% of the time the door bell is offline or takes forever to come up through the app. By that time, the person at your door is already gone. The sound through the door bell is terrible and 90% of the time you're unable to talk to the person. I called in December of 2021 to verify when our 5 year contract was up because I knew we were getting close. We couldn't WAIT to cancel all services with this crap company. They told me June of 2022 we were up. I marked it on the calendar. I call them today (June 16, 2022) only to find out that they have a 90 day cancellation policy and because I didn't call in that time frame, they tacked on 18 MORE MONTHS!! WHAT!! I WANT OUT OF THIS COMPANY!! Come take your crap out of my house and stop stealing our money! They are a bunch of liars and thieves and they know it by putting the fine print in their contract and never verbalizing with their customers! Terrible, TERRIBLE, customer service!! In order to get our of this new 18 month contract we have to BUY our way out. Such a joke. BUYERS BEWARE! They will never communicate with you. They will take every dime out of your pocket. They will lie. SAVE YOUR MONEY! Don't do business with NorthStar!! read more

This is not a company to work with. They don't know how to cancel the contract when you sell the house and no longer have the equipment. I have had 2 major system failures with NorthStar since the end of January. The first one was discovered during an actual home invasion in which the alarm company did not contact police or any of my emergency contacts. Luckily, I was not incapacitated by the intruder and was able to call 911. The second failure with NorthStar occurred this week when my motion detector on my window was triggered and my siren did not sound. I was asleep and woke up to police at my door 20 minutes after the alarm was triggered. Despite my system failing to perform basic functions during two critical situations in less than 4 months, NorthStar is refusing to let me out of my contract unless I pay them $2,204.51. I have posted this information to Facebook and NextDoor as well. Tyler J., if you have any questions, you can ask the following people within NorthStar: Cole in customer service- I spoke with him on Tuesday and he assured me a manager would call me on Wednesday. I never heard from anyone. Steven in technical support- He yawned in my ear and told me I would have a new sensor to replace my faulty one within 5-7 business days during which time I would have to bypass the sensor on my window. Linda the manager- I spoke with her last night and she confirmed I could not get out of my contract and attributed my system failures to my not conducting monthly tests. She provided me with the address where I can serve a lawsuit for breach of contract. Ashlyn in customer service- I spoke with her to request a copy of my contract. She never sent it. David in customer service- I spoke to him to get the contract Ashlyn never sent. read more

BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY! They deserve a negative star rating. Northstar home is the worst! We signed up 2 years ago and are stuck in a 5 year contract. Our indoor camera and built in camera from the keypad haven't worked since soon after we got it. Also our thermostat started acting up and they would do nothing to help. Our thermostat would randomly switch itself off, or switch to heat when it's very hot and the heat shouldn't be on (We live in Texas, come on!). Or it would get stuck on the temp it was on, (sometimes being very hot and sometimes very cold) and wouldn't allow you to change the temp unless you reset the entire thermostat. We were having to do this multiple times a day, and night. We replaced the batteries several times, and called in for tech support. They had me tell them how the wires were connected. They didn't do much "troubleshooting". They wouldn't send anyone out to look at it. Instead they said "it's an issue with your hvac and you should have an hvac person go look at it. Our thermostat is functioning properly." Ummm, no it sure as shit isn't! So we went ahead and bought a new DIFFERENT thermostat. And with our new Nest thermostat, guess what. NO ISSUES!! If it was an issue with something other than their thermostat then we would still be having issues. But nope! New thermostat works just fine. Northstars equipment and customer service is crap. I wanted to see about cancelling our service. Most companies will let you pay some type of cancellation fee to end a contract early. But not Northstar! NOPE! They say if you cancel early, you still have to pay the monthly monitoring fee of $71/month until contract ends. They expect me to pay $71 a month for the next 3 years when most of the equipment/service they are supposed to be providing are NOT EVEN WORKING! I was told "The only option you have to cancel is to move to a new location where our service is not offered" WTF ARE YOU SERIOUS!! I'm so angry with this company and with the sales person Manny Hentges. I am usually very good about researching anything before I go with a new service. I'm kicking myself that I didn't go online and read reviews before being talked into this. If I had, there's no way I would have agreed. This company is awful! SCAM!!! My aunt died in December and this company has refused to cancel their services. At first, they refused because no one knew her password. They agreed to do it after some back and forth with the death certificate (in December). In April, charges were still coming out of my aunt's bank account, so my mom contacted them again and they again had the same back and forth to eventually agree they would cancel it, they had received the death certificate etc. She proceeded to place a stop payment at the bank to ensure they would not continue taking payments. Now, this month, they contacted my mom to tell her that they were sending the account to collections. They have been stealing from my dead aunt for months and threatened to take MY DEAD AUNT to collections. Do not ever start an account here, they won't even let you cancel if you die.
