Wow! What a gem of a restaurant on the grounds of a park/historical site dedicated to Paul Revere. The menu was a little limited, but the food delicious! I had the Arugula & Beet Salad with goat cheese mousse & pistachios - added salmon. The table also shared some fries and they were spectacular. I liked grilled carrots appetizer as well. I visited with a networking group and we were given a room with a door that closed. That was huge because you could actually hear others talk that way. I was impressed with the fresh quality of the food. We had the fried provolone as well as the grilled shrimp for the table. I had the carrot bolognese special, the beef was a bit chunky and dry within my Bolognese. It was pretty cute inside, and I appreciated that the tables were spread out with enough room at the end for a baby and stroller -- which is a huge plus. The clam chowder had good flavor, but it came out lukewarm and had some pretty big lumps of potato. If you order the home fries, definitely ask for them crispy. Portions were large across the board, so you definitely get your money's worth. Overall, a solid spot with a family-friendly setup! Have been dying to try northern spy for a long time. Went last night and I love the atmosphere of being back in colonial times, but I don't wanna sit like I'm back there. The chairs were very uncomfortable for a two hour dinner that included appetizers, dinner and dessert. As far as the food goes, I would give it a B. Most things were very tasty but definitely a limited menu. For the prices of the entrées and the location you should at least be comfortable throughout your dinner. read more

Northern Spy gets good marks for the inside and outside vibes, a dark interior or industrial exterior. The food was creative in idea but the execution seemed to not be in line with the vision. Perhaps, with time, the experience will drift up to the inventive menu but, as is, was missing the mark for most dishes (like a solid B-/B grade, fine but not in line with the elevated dining experience they are going for). Very nice spot. Unique and historic building. Older crowd when we visited, but we went for an early dinner with a toddler. All of our meals were tasty, yet disappointing. Dined in once and experience was fine. Their burgers are solid. Take out experience is a mess. I ordered directly on their website and was missing a bunch of items. Maybe just additional descriptions but looks confusing) Stonefruit from Fairmount Fruit Farm (missing but potentially duplicate as well) Burger and fries did not come with any ketchup. Food Did not come with any utensils and there was not an option to select it. We called and they said the fruits do not come with take out but that was not specified on the website. They said we can come back to pick up ketchup and utensils but I'm not driving all the way back just to pick up things that should have been included. The history of this property is absolutely fascinating.. Paul Revere use this building to make copper siding during the revolutionary time period. About the restaurant... the interior is beautiful and well appointed. It has a very cozy vibe with a historical twist. The food was absolutely delicious from the appetizers through dessert. For the appetizer, I had a bowl of perfectly sweet and spicy chicken wings. For dinner, I had the beef tenderloin with asparagus and it was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. The dessert that I had was so delicious and different... I couldn't put my spoon down. I will be back here for sure and I am so happy that my neighbor told me about this place. read more

It had been at least year since the last time we went to Northern Spy - Mostly because it's price puts it in the "special treat" category, but we decided we wanted to indulge and spend money last night - I guess. We came here to eat more often during the pandemic because their outdoor seating is really lovely. The restaurant is located in the Paul Revere Memorial park, which is a newer and very well cared for park on historically important mill land, and hence with the beautiful Neponset River. This was our first time eating inside and inside is very nice too. Our waitress's name was Stacy and she was really excellent. Asked about allergies, made sure we knew what was up and was very pleasant. The hostess was great too. The food is spectacular. We got the slow cooked beef with mashed potato and other veg and the spinach and fava bean risotto and split them. They were weirdly both rich and tender - but in different ways? There were lots of different flavors in the spinach and fava beans and the meat was just cooked soo nice. We also got the sourdough bread with the sea salt butter and we left so happy. I like their line up of beers too. Though I feel like I usually end up with the Flower Child from CBC. We have brought friends here a couple of times and it's been a hit with them too. Someday we'll make it to brunch. Highly reccommended though. If you have some extra cash. The food and atmosphere are definitely worth it. read more

My friend and I dined at Northern Spy earlier today for their Brunch. My initial positive experience happened yesterday when they returned my voicemail message after hours. Melissa ordered a flatbread pizza that was as visually appealing as it was flavorful. (I have the leftovers.) I ordered the Tuna Melt (on Iggy's Bread.) Delicious and nutritious. Each meal was accompanied by a small, fresh salad. There's ample free parking, delightful air conditioning, and very pleasant service. We'll be back! read more

I would have never found this place without a lot of help from friends. It was a great choice the ambiance was nice For conversation but still had music in background. The food was top notch. Fish was fresh and flakey paired with couscous and broccoli great combination. Tried the stout braised beef with mash potatoes and eggplant and peppers, beef melts in your mouth. We had a mini reunion in the private dining room. Our server, Taylor was outstanding and had the perfect balance of checking on us and letting us be. I have driven by this place for so long but never knew there was a restaurant there until the other day. Unsure what to expect when my friends recommended that we went that, and I was pleasantly surprised. We payed the $2 for the bottomless sourdough bread basket and it was yummy! The drinks were also tasty and strong. I ordered the gnocchi and initially thought that they brought out scallops but I was mistaken and really enjoyed the gnocchi. Quickly became a member of the clean plate club. With a bug sweet tooth, I had to try dessert and ordered the sticky maple pudding. It was delicious and I highly recommend. Plentiful parking and tables, Northern Spy has you covered if you have a large group! FOOD: We've visited for both dinner and brunch. The brunch menu is limited but there's still something for everyone. I tried the Jonah Crab Eggs Benedict which came with a generous amount of crab, potatoes, and salad. My partner got the beef and hash which he liked. When we visited for dinner, I ordered the scallops which were on the salty side. I liked the dish but wish they offered a lighter carb to pair with the scallops. SERVICE: Our dinner service was fine - it was a group of 7-8 of us and the waitress was attentive and great! I am knocking down some points from our most recent experience. It was a fairly quiet Sunday around 1pm and the place was pretty empty but service was very slow. We waited for a while until someone realized we were there and that's when we put in our coffee and app order. The waitress didn't check up on us at all after we got our food and did not refill coffee - we ended up getting coffee in small tea cups vs. other people had the larger mugs, but we were fine since we thought coffee could be refilled. Cool looking building and a nice cozy interior. We had 7:30 reservations on Saturday and were seated right away. Our server came over quickly and took a drink order and then was gone for a while. After returning we ordered a chicken wing appetizer and a couple entrees Steak Tips & Sea Scallops. The chicken wings came out and were fantastic. Very messy and HOT, but exactly what we wanted. Portion size was about 10-12 wingettes and was perfect. We waited a looooong time for our entrees to come out. When they finally arrived we were beyond disappointed. I thought they brought the wrong plate when they dropped off the scallops. It was a giant heaping pile of corn with 5 quarter size scallops on a bed of something. I'm not sure what it was grits or something? It didn't mention it in the menu. The menu did say it would have smoked tomatoes and there wasn't a tomato on the plate. The steak tips were medium vs the requested medium rare, but we never saw our server (as someone from the kitchen dropped off the food) again until she just showed up with a bill before even asking if we wanted dessert. The fries were all cold and just not good and the pickled peppers???? Let me just say they do not belong on a plate in a restaurant. They were lip numbing hot. $32 & $34 for those entrees? No thanks! To many amazing restaurants out there to ever go back here again. We did order two cookies and I cream for dessert. Again someone from the kitchen brought them to us and our waitress never came back. We had a table of 8 and were seated in a private room, which felt nice. Decor is fantastic with great lighting and windows. Menu had a lot of items that I would try. I had the duck breast and Northern Spy is the only restaurant that I know that serves that much duck breast for the price which was really worth it. The burger was delicious and flavorful. Servers were ok, could be more friendly. Food didn't live up to our standards. Price was high. The fried chicken French toasts looked and tasted over cook and triple fried it tooo much. Maple syrup wasn't served on the side so when the dish was presented, the French toast was already soaked and softened by the maple syrup. Epic fail! Burger was just ok.... Nothing special... would have gotten a better burger at shake shack to be honest. Home fries were good! Crab egg Benedict... one egg was fully cooked and one was runny??? Excellent experience here. Our server Roberto was so attentive at the right times and not ever overbearing. The menu felt like there was something for everyone. For appetizers, we got the burrata and broccoli, bluefin tuna with bread, and green bean arancini. All excellent and served on a variety of beautiful plates. The tuna was a standout for us with the warm bread. I ordered a special that night that was made with fresh pasta -- delicious. All of the drinks were lovely as well. Let me start by saying that I got my inspiration for my beef back bolognaise from Northern Spy 4 years ago, but things have changed. We started with the whipped feta dish which was a giant bowl of whipped fetter, chopped olives and mint leaves and a plate of hot buttered pita bread. Please cut it before it gets to the table. Very good, however they clearly have no consideration for cost control given the amount of feta dip V. pita. Smaller is better with apps. I wanted a wine and did not want to order a bottle so the waitstaff was happy to tell me which was the cheapest, which is not what I was looking for. I asked her for a California Cab and was not interested in the cost. Training required. The house wine was very good and loved the wine glasses. My girlfriend ordered the Mac & Cheese "gratin" which was over cooked, warm, and resembled a fillet of fish. I thought she received the wrong dish but the waitstaff was nice enough to say that it was cooked that way. Rigatoni noodles standing on end, encrusted and baked in a rectangular ramekin. Grate "gratin" but no cheese. Never seen anything like it. Please stop!!! I ordered the Ricotta Cavatelli which had about 3 ounces of lobster and a tasteless broth. They added the terms mirepoix to make it sound fancy. Just a bunch of vegetables cooked in butter or some other fat and the piave vecchia?? Where was it? The pasta was gummy. I did not finish the meal. I could not eat the pasta. Desert was pistachio tiramisu was a bit thick and lacked any coffee flavor or moisture....made elsewhere with a 1/4" layer of chocolate powders that if you are not careful will choke you. So much potential. For the cost it is not worth it at all. Too bad. read more

We asked for a well-done burger but it arrived at our table pink in the middle. When we ordered the burger, we pointedly noted that it had to be well done. We had to send it back for further cooking. The coffee was old and just warm; not hot. We asked for sweet n low or splenda but they did not have any. The fries arrived with no ketchup. The atmosphere was nice but a bit noisy. After a few inconsistent visits, I tried again. Food had been between decent and yummy, but pricey. Ambiance is amazing!! On this particular visit, I sat at the bar, lots of staff flowing around behind the bar chatting with each other and occasionally customers at the bar ... I waited ... and waited ... and waited .... My DC and I tried this restaurant recently. Between the two of us, we had 2 bowls of clam chowder, an order of wings, shrimp risotto, prime rib, and 3 cocktails. When our check arrived I was amazed that our total was under $90. I thought to myself, "The food wasn't outstanding and some things could have used more seasoning, but for this kind of value I can see myself becoming a loyal customer." Then I showed my DC the price and exclaimed, "See this is what I'm talking about! You best believe we're coming back!!!" I even almost gave her a high-five right at the table. Then, after composing myself, I looked at the check in detail and realized that it belonged to the vegetarian couple sitting next to us. First, there is almost no signage outside so you aren't sure where you are except obviously GPS is saying you have arrived. There are a couple small signs that you can see once you get closer to the building. The building and surrounding grounds were beautiful. Decor and ambiance were very enjoyable. Staff was great, food was okay. The server and supporting staff were very attentive and helpful and answered all our questions. We always had water, drinks, and they replaced our cutlery any time it was called for. Cocktails were okay. The strawberry gin cocktail was pretty good. The espresso martini I had for dessert tasted a bit watery, and had something shaved in it...maybe mini choc shavings? Just a a bit different than your standard espresso bean and didn't really add any flavor so unclear why they were used. Apps - burrata, broccoli croquets, fries...prob the best part of our meal. I got the scallops, which were a bit salty and the plating did not make it look appetizing, though it didn't taste bad. Unfortunately everything on the plate was very earth toned and brownish. It also had weirdly big mushrooms in the corn topping that felt like they should be chopped smaller to align with the rest of the topping. Also, the menu felt incomplete in its description of each dish. Examples: the scallops were served over grits...not common in this area and would have never known had I not asked the server a question that she answered and also shared that the scallops were served over grits. 2, another friend in our party ordered Chicken piccata, which was actually a full Cornish hen...not really chicken piccata. The server mentioned this before she officially ordered but if the dishes have a twist, that should be reflected on menu so you know what you're getting. Dessert: Choc chip cookies and coffee ice cream were delicious. Peach cobbler was watery. The first bite was good but then it just felt like you were eating watery soggy peaches and batter. It had a smoky flavor too, which could have worked had it not been so watery. There is no need to add any liquid to a cobbler...the natural juices in peaches with added sugar should create a thicker syrup consistency but it seemed like they added liquid because when you dropped your spoon in there, you'd come back up with liquid and no filling... With outdoor seating not one staff was out there if we needed service. Ambiance the worst. My friend made reservations for outdoor seating at 1 pm not until we arrived we were not told the kitchen was closing at 2 pm not 2:30 for a wedding and that they would be rearranging the seating outside where we were seated the whole time. It was loud and distracting with staff moving furniture around and communicating with each other about set up. This should have been communicated to my friend when making the reservations.
