Bills my insurance $200 for a contact lens exam during which I ask for a 30 day extended wear prescription and at the end of which he hands me dailies samples. I repeat I want extended wear not dailies. Dr. Stralka says each exam includes a follow up and we can try extended wear lenses then, he just wants to be sure the prescription is right, that my vision is good. I'm impressed, and say ok. On the way out, the receptionist tells me I owe another $100. Why? "There's a fitting charge". I'm a little taken aback ($300 for a contact lens exam?) but pay it and leave. When I come in for the "follow up" Dr. Stralka asks if I still want an extended wear prescription. Yes, just like I said in the first place. "That will involve another "fitting", he says. I ask "does that mean another $100?" Yes. I tell him in that case never mind, I'll just take whatever Rx he "calculated" for the dailies and be on my way. He tells me I don't need the Rx, he will order the dailies for me, and if I buy a years supply right now, he'll give me a great deal (turns out, about double what anywhere else charges). At this point I know I'm being hustled and tell him, no, just give me the Rx. I politely tell him I'll go shop around and if I can't find a better deal I'll come back in and order from him. He abruptly stands up and walks out of the room. A few minutes go by and I find an assistant. Where did the doctor go? She says he's is busy with other patients now. "But he didn't write me a prescription". She tells me I'll have to sit and wait in the lobby, because he's busy. An hour later he comes out, tells me I should just buy contacts from him and forget about the price because insurance will cover it anyway. I tell him I'll think about it, but please give my prescription. He writes it and I leave. When I take it to a store to get my contacts, they tell me they can't fill it, because Dr. Stralka has indicated on the prescription a lens size that isn't manufactured. The people at the store tell say they're surpised I got a prescription to take with me from Dr. Stralka at all. They open their directory of doctors, and point to his name. There's a notation "uncooperative, won't fax" next to his name. He's the only doctor in their book with a notation. They tell me Dr. Stralka is the only doctor in town who refuses to fax in prescriptions. "He makes people make an appointment to go back to physically get their prescription and then makes it very difficult, makes them wait all day" they tell me. They tell me he's notorious for withholding prescriptions and ripping off his patients. They tell me they've heard it from so many people that they're amazed he hasn't been shut down because what he's doing is borderline illegal. The next day I go back in to get my correct prescription and ask to speak to the doctor. Instead a kid dressed in hospital scrubs (?) comes out and tells me Dr. Stralka is just too busy and what do I want? I tell him I want an ACCURATE thrity day prescription which is what I came in for and what I paid for. The kid says he heard me agree to dailies on my previous appointment because he'd been "listening outside the door". Seriously. He tells me if I want a 30 day presciprtion, the doctor told him to tell me that will be $100. A few feet away an old lady is being pressured into buying $400 lenses for her eyeglasses. I'm finally given a photocopy of the incorrect prescription, with the incorrect/non-existant lens size scratched out and corrected by the receptionist in pen on the copy. I tell them this looks altered, I don't think anyone will accept it. They insist its fine, and that the doctor is simply too busy to write an accurate Rx. I leave, take it to the store, and BIG SURPISE -- it can't be accepted because it's been altered. To sum up -- they put you over a barrel -- $300 for nothing, and if you don't want to kiss the money good-bye, you can just pay $400. For a contact lens prescription. I am joining the list of others I see on the Better Business Bureau website in filing a complaint against this scam operation. Also notifying the insurance provider, and investigating other options as well. BTW -- I have to believe the review by "amanda s" on this page was written by Stralka or an associate of his. read more
