My husband was having severe eye pain starting around 5am. I quickly went on our insurance sight to find an eye doctor in network. Makar was the one that opened the earliest at 8am. We showed up at 8am on the dot and they were able to squeeze him in by 8:10. The doctor was very friendly and helped us solve the issue. Very friendly staff. Our reviews for Makar have been all over the place through the last several years. Our last visit with review was bad enough that we called it quits, and the manager reached out and asked me to give another doctor a chance. We decided to do so and after yesterday's visit with Dr. Scott Habermann, we're back! Whew! They've opened up additional space across the hall, so that's where you check in now and start the tests prior to meeting with the doctor. They were quick to get us both taken care of back to back and we waited mere minutes for the doc, once the initial tests were done. I don't know if they told Dr. Habermann that we were happy with the previous Doc, but he was awesome from the get go! We both went back to the exam room together and there was a lot of chit chat that we thoroughly enjoyed! We had things in common and there ended up being a lot of laughs! I filled him in at the end of everything how disappointing the previous exams have been and told him at the end the we were thrilled with him! We were quick to pick out frames and they quickly pulled up our previous requests, fitted and had the orders all squared away! As we were walking out, I saw the manager and had a little chat with her about the night and day difference in what we experienced and glad to have come back and try another doc. Hopefully all the billing works out correctly so it doesn't take the wind out of my sails from this experience! read more

Short version: 3 exams over 4 years with 2 different doctors, no change in an almost nothing prescription. 2 attempts at having them make glasses. Two tries for the first appointment, both wrong, so I gave up after being told "I just had to get used to them." (turned out the prescription was wrong). Nothing the second appointment. I was told "you're not going to wear them anyways, so why bother making new ones." After the third appointment, 4 months and 4 more tries at new glasses later, they still can't get the glasses right. I give up on this place. Not sure if anyone here knows what they are doing. For what this place charges/bills, and the amount of time it takes to get your glasses, you think they could do a better job than the one-hour places. read more

I called over some eye pain and for that, the receptionist said she could get me in on the same day. Six hours later I'm seeing the doc, getting an antibiotic prescription and six days later, no more eye pain. The staff was prompt and friendly and made for a very pleasant experience. It had been a few years since I had an eye exam and I felt like my glasses weren't working as good so started looking around for place open on a Saturday. Bingo! This place is! I would recommend getting one of the first appointments of the day because they get pretty busy. My appointment was at 10am. I arrived and had to review my paperwork and sign the agreement of policies. I waited maybe 2 minutes the. The first person came to get me who does the initial testing and stuff. I don't know technicals. The guy was very nice and knew what he was doing. After that was all done maybe 20 minutes of tests I went to the room where the doctors was going to do the test. I waited maybe 5 minutes if even. She was super nice and was pretty quick. A little like she was rushing but maybe that's how she is. She made me feel comfortable and made it an easy process. After she was done I got my prescription and went to look out at the frames. I wasn't really set on buying frames so I looked around for a bit and when someone else called my name I just checked out for the day and went on my way. I payed a $10 co pay for my eye exam. I can get frames anywhere and once I get the glasses I can come back and readjust the prescription if needed I believe up to three months? I was quite impressed with their selection of frames and their waiting room was nice, they had things for sale, they had a kids section, and they were doing a giveaway with a survey of your visit for a $100 gift card. I will be back in a year to renew my prescription which is recommend you wait only a year! My insurance covers it so why not! read more

The eye desk staff were wonderful but the eyeglass side of things is a train wreck. Zero assistance picking out glasses and extremely disappointing. It's about $500 more than other places in town and got a whopping three minutes with an actual Doctor They have explained due to the exhorbitant pricing and success. They had a doctor fly in from Oregon to fill in (Dr. lounsberry). I have a painful eye ulcer and his prescription is not good bc he should actually be writing prescriptions in Alaska! Love Makar. They're open Saturdays. Huge plus for a busy family such as mine. They are always busy but they are worth the wait in my opinion. Their midtown first floor location is also very convenient. They have the best technicians (those who help you pick out frames etc.) my daughter has always gone here for exams and glasses. My son with non-verbal autism must go to Alaska Children's Eye and Strabismus for his exams and prescriptions but we come to Makar to order his frames etc. we've been lucky to always get the same kind and patient technician. If I call for anything ... except to make an appointment I only get to talk to a recording and am told no one will get back to me before the next day :(. I was to replace a pair of prescription sunglasses that were lost over the weekend. Was happy with the prescription and have purchased several pairs over the years. I was told I HAD to have an exam as I was over two years. When questioned the sales person responded indignantly as I would question why, when my prescription hasn't changed in 10 years, I was happy with it and I just want to get them ordered (give them money) with no hassles as I wear them constantly. I was surprised as the sales team has previously been accommodating and helpful. I will not be returning nor will I continue to recommend Makar. There are other options. read more

Big place. Nice Decor. Except for the fake leather chairs that are falling apart. Very uncomfortable in shorts. Dark haired girl at the front seemed rude in her tone. She was nice. Her tone just sounded like she had something better to do. Girl who did all my testing was the best part of my visit. Also dark haired. Didn't get her name. Waited a while between exam and seeing the dr. Had to ask how much longer as I had another appt and had already been there an hour. Dr. I saw was VERY young. First year. He shook his legs the entire time which subsequently shook my seat too. Weird. But he was very nice and knowledgeable. Ended up going with contacts for the first time ever. Bummed that the soonest I could get back in was almost 3 weeks out. Overall not the best but not the worst -------- 8/28 update. Removed one star I waited 3 long weeks between my initial visit and when they could get me in to get my contacts. Only to find out they don't carry one I need and nobody ordered it. They gave me something "close" and scheduled a revisit in another week. read more

My experience with Makar Eyecare was horrible. Their Optical Department lacked professionalism, customer service, and consistency. My family and I went to purchase glasses. They gave me one grand total for what I understood, was for all 4 pairs. I made a payment plan, to pay it off in 3 payments. I paid the balance off in 2. A few weeks later I picked up my glasses left the building and was up the street when I recieved a call stating I owe an additional $513. I visited the optical department 4 times following to get an explanation for the balance. I was told each time my rep would call me back. I never recieved that call. On my 5th visit after recieving the pink slips in the mail. I was told my balance was actually $642 and not the surprise $513. The increase was gift wrapped with nothing but an apology and expectation to pay the balance. The rep attempted to put me on another payment plan but this time. She would have me sign a promisary note. Which didn't happen for the original payment plan. I wasted gas and my patience. However, I remained professional, calm toned, and well put together. I will not return to Makar and urge others to pay attention to their business dealing. read more

Now mid-Sept. No refund from Makar nor any contact from them. I paid full price for lenses that I did not receive. Apparently updating my review removed my prior write-up. Makar provided an excellent eye exam. I am not unhappy about that exam. The Optician provided deceptive and deceitful service. I ordered high quality lenses But received inferior, cheaper ones. I paid top dollar for lenses that I did not receive. The Optician did not care. Although she was "sorry", she only reluctantly offered me a refund after a lot of hedging. The lenses I received are the cheap, thick ones. They weigh a lot. I do not want them. I paid $140 for the high density lenses, but did not receive them. So, once Makar's Optician had my payment, I got scammed. My options are few, but I want everyone to know, your eye exam will be top quality, but buy your eyewear elsewhere.. read more

I had a contact fitting appointment today with Rod at Makar. I have never met this employee before and I now wish I never had. I ended up cutting the appointment short due to his belligerent, condescending and impertinent attitude. After some initial consternation on his part as to whether I should have come to the appointment wearing contacts and then his exceedingly vague request for me to remove them, I was very disappointed in how the interaction rapidly degenerated thereafter. He left me at a station with a sink and mirror as I removed the contacts I was wearing and put in the new multi focal contacts. My vision was dramatically poorer and I had difficult seeing even several feet ahead of me. It was very difficult to even find the room he had retreated to. When I finally located him, I immediately informed him I was having great difficulty seeing. He abruptly dismissed my concern and responded that I wasn't using them properly. He then asked me if I wear bifocal glasses. I answered that I do not, but rather simple reading glasses. He snapped at me saying those are the same thing. Confused, I responded that they were not. His demeanor suddenly changed and he scolded me in regards to my "miscommunication" and I needed to just answer all his questions if I wanted him to continue. In response I requested he tell me how I'm supposed to wear the contacts properly so as I can see clearly. He began drawing a picture of an eye and using the voice of an impatient kindergarten teacher saying "this is an eye. Do you know what an eye is?". At that point I told him I was done with him and I walked out to the front counter hoping to find any other person who would be able to help me. After several minutes waiting for help, Rod appeared again begging me to return. I directly requested him to find someone else to see me. He never returned. read more

Their staff in regard to eye health are professional and friendly. They are courteous and are not in a rush. First your typical exam is done and then your deeper review of results follow. Finally, there is a well staffed and stocked eye glasses storefront. It is well staffed and wired to insurance to aid in your product selection. They facility does follow ups and adjustments happily. I've always had a wonderful experience working with Jonathon when making a selection for The record keeping, front office and medical staff are easy to overlook since they work so smoothly together with the appointment process and insurance. Just like Michael Bay, Makar Eye Care came back with a sequel I didn't want. In late June I received a bill from MEC that said they changed their minds again, and that my visit 11 months earlier wasn't covered. It's also worth noting that they only do billing once a month, so the letter was printed two days shy of a month of the day I received it. I called about half an hour before they closed to ask what exactly had happened. The receptionist transferred me to the billing dept. It rang through to voice mail, and on their message it said billing was open until 6pm. As it was still before 6pm I called back and asked if anyone was in the billing dept. The receptionist said they had all left for the day and she would pass my info on. They also claimed my insurance expired months after it actually did. No idea where they go that info from. I got a call the next day from a woman who was very adamant that there was someone in the billing dept, and that the billing dept is always manned. She later called back to apologize and said the billing staff had shortened their hours for the summer. I told her they needed to change the info on their voicemail message to reflect the correct hours. After the bill was paid I called to get a copy of my current bill with the, stating that my balance was $0. I wanted this nightmare to be over. The receptionist said they could mail it to me, "Nope, I'm going to come get it on my lunch break. I don't want to wait a month for it to arrive". She responded "It takes you a month to get your mail?" "Last time I asked you only do billing once a month, is that still correct?" "Oh, yeah. Sorry about that". So on my lunch I drove there to get what I really hope to be my last statement from MEC. Fingers crossed for no more sequels. read more

I was scheduled to be fitted for contacts and dropped off medical release paperwork two weeks before my appointment. When I arrived they had not sent it over until 20 min before. Needless to say they didn't get a response. They then gave me an unnecessary eye exam and charge my insurance as well as myself. I'm not usually one to write reviews but today over two weeks after they were supposed to order my contacts I still have not received them. I just called them to hear they forgot to order them. They charged me and my insurance when they supposedly ordered them. I do not recommend, they seem to be not very proactive. Adding on - So today is now September 19th. This has been a month and I was asked to change my review. I have received the wrong contacts 10 days after they were supposed to be overnighted to me. I went in yet again and ordered more contacts that were supposed to be "overnighted"... that was over a week ago and no contacts still. I was asked to change my review by the owner as you see below on google maps review. I would suggest before you ask your customers to change their review you make sure they actually received what they paid for. This has been months and I still have not received them. instead i was given a trial pair that are a slightly less wrong prescription. Shame on you. read more

To say my vision care needs are a bit complicated is an understatement; however, I was in good hands with Dr. Wentzien and the entire staff at Makar Eyecare. "Good enough" was not an option-Dr. Wentzien went above and beyond to make sure I was fitted with the contacts I needed. The entire staff was amazing. The front desk staff were professional and courteous while at the same time knowledgeable about my insurance vision benefits. The optical techs were very pleasant and provided excellent care. I have been coming to Maker for the past three years and I always have a great annual check up. I'm seen right away, the techs are friendly and the doc is always informative and professional. I've seen two different docs in the last three years and both have been great to work with. You do have a choice of seeing a doc regularly but everyone has been fantastic. I went and had my eyes checked at the end of last week. The physician was ok. He gave me my contact lens prescription. I took it elsewhere to get new contacts. The staff there told me the prescription was written incorrectly, and I would need to get it updated from my eye doctor. I called the eye doctor, and the technician called me back. They faxed me a new prescription. I went back to the store to get contacts, the prescription is wrong again. So I called their office again to try to get the correct prescription. I asked if I could just go there and get it written down for me because I was in the area. The person at the desk told me to come on in. I went. Waited 20 minutes and wasn't able to see anyone. The front desk staff told me if I waited five more minutes I could see someone. I had some thing else so I had to leave. When I started going to this office they were two doctors. And they were pretty on the ball. They've gotten so big. I've been seeing them for over 16 years. They are simply too big now and have zero attention to detail. My family and I are going elsewhere. I've been calling around to find out how much my Aetna/VSP insurance covers for an eye exam/contacts/glasses. This is the only provider that flat-out refused to tell me what my insurance would cover of their services before making an appointment. Even then, I was told they wouldn't even look up my insurance until two days before my appointment. To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement. This provider might be on VSP's Premier list, but I'd recommend going just about anywhere else. Again, EVERY other provider I called was more than happy to tell me how much I would pay out of pocket after insurance before I made an appointment. UPDATE: I just made an appointment with an VSP Premier eye care office that was more than happy to work with me to maximize my insurance benefits BEFORE I made my appointment. Shop around. read more

I accompanied my niece and nephew to their appointment. While checking in, the front desk lady began giving my sister attitude. I didn't say or do anything. I just sat there quietly and minded my business trying my best to keep my composure.While sitting there the lady at the front desk kept staring at us with a snobby look on her face. It made for a very uncomfortable visit. I know the doctors are exceptional as I used to be a patient but left due to a financial person giving me attitude over a bill I shouldn't have had to pay due to dual coverage. In which I simply asked to bill the 2nd insurance company to which I got a snarky remark saying they don't bill a 2nd insurance company. It was just an argument after that. Their admin staff needs an attitude adjustment!!! I don't believe they deserved the one star I HAD to give them. Bad customer service equals bad business. read more
