My experience for what it is worth. They took $100 upfront for bench fee and promised to hear back in 2 weeks. Well, after 4 weeks, I called and they finally did provide a quote for the repair of my previously working deck, specifying the repairs & calibration, that completing them would be straight forward, and that my deck would be ready for pick up in about 2 weeks. Well, after, almost 3.5 weeks of waiting, I called to check in. They explicitly said, "Oh I was meaning to let you know. We can't fix your deck anymore. We ordered a wrong part and can't find the correct one, and now can't fix it. We're sorry you brought us a deck that is in too poor of condition to be fixed. You can use the $100 toward buying a another product in the store". This is a nightmare. I feel blindsided and cheated. read more

Extraordinary service. My record player has been playing slowly and I tried every DIY solution on the internet and nothing was working. I was visiting my terminally ill brother up north recently. He began talking about his record collection. I suggested he break some albums out. He shared that his GE Mustang turntable was not working. I asked him if I could take the turntable to an audio-hifi-doc for him. Fast forward to today. I called Northern Audio and spoke with Scott. He invited me to bring the unit in. As Scott proceeded to diagnose the unit he pronounced that the motor was frozen. Scott took the unit apart right there on counter and lubed, cleaned and was able to free up the frozen motor! He installed a brand new needle. He demonstrated that unit was working. Scott charged me cost of needle; refusing to take anything more. He shared that the unit could stand some additional cleaning, lubing and replacement of some internal rubber parts. I decided to postpone the additional work and take the unit to my brother to see the smile on his face. This unit playing some of the old records will be therapeutic. Scott had me take a brief video to share with my brother. covering the fine points of this old units' operation. Scott then told me to bring the unit back with any concerns. We have a mid century modern, RCA Stereo Console that needed a little attention. We found the Northern Audio Service on the internet. After talking with Mike, we removed the changer and took a road trip from South Bend IN , little bit of a ride but, no problem as we didn't want to mail it. I had Northern look at a Fisher 500C amplifier that I picked up at an estate sale. I paid for their diagnosis, and after a couple of weeks they said that it needed "every tube replaced." I found that odd as that is very rare. They estimated $1000+ in repair, and the gentleman acknowledge that it probably wasn't worth it. I took the receiver to a location that specializes in guitar amplifiers and vintage tube amps. The gentleman charged me $350, and said that only one output tube needed to be replaced. He said it was actually in excellent condition and just needed some diodes and capacitors replaced, along with a selenium rectifier. The receiver sounds absolutely wonderful, now. I'm glad I went with my gut. Just took my McIntosh amp to the same gentleman. Steer clear of Northern. read more

After a year with a Sony tv it decided to stop working. Manufacture won't warranty so I had no choice to have it looked at. Best Buy was 150 just to look at it and Northern was half. Right off the bat they were accommodating and quick to diagnose. Even though they could have made money on the repair he suggested I buy a new one because it wasn't worth the expense. They were very honest and suggested I keep the tv because he would continue to look for a cheaper part. Definitely recommend! read more

Not a fan of Northern T.V. I've had multiple bad experiences with this repair shop. The first time I declined their repair after paying their hefty diagnostic fee. I should have never gone back with a second item, because it turned out worse. I don't think they are dis-honest...but in my case they failed to repair my item despite assuring me that I was "good to go" . They over-promised and under delivered. My repair turned into a bad investment. They were unapologetic and kind of rude to me when I questioned the big labor charge...especially since the item did not work properly as promised. I've found a small part of Mayberry. Mike, the owner couldn't have been nicer. We talked for about an hour. I felt like I was in the Mayberry sheriff's building or Floyds barber shop. Just nice, fun interesting men. I gave him a 1950's Electrolux vacuum for repair thinking like so many others, no...can't do it. Mike smiled and said, Oh yeah, no problem! I called Northern Audio Service because I needed a needle replaced on my turntable and told them that I do not know how to do it myself and am high risk, so they wore a mask and showed me how to replace the needle outside in my trunk. Very polite, knowledgeable and helpful. read more

There's something so refreshing about getting something fixed instead of buying new. When my Hoover wasn't working on my carpet, I thought about getting a new one, then decided I'd rather see if any place can fix it. After reading Yelp reviews, I dropped my vacuum off, within a half hour they called me with the problem, and it was fixed in a few days. It was a little pricey than others ($65) but I'm happy to support a small local business, and use what I have instead of buying new again. read more

I have been taking my household electronics to Northern for service and repair for approx. 10 years and they have consistently treated me politely. They are professional in their service and fair in their pricing. They'll give you good advice upfront if you are not sure which way to go in spending money on repairing something or getting a new unit. Case in point, 3 yrs back I took in a Sony surround sound amp in to have them look at it, the center channel was cutting out. They told me what the cost would be to troubleshoot the problem and that it would be applied to the repair should I choose to have them repair it. I asked for their opinion, they estimated it would run approx $115 to repair. It turned out to be $105 and they tuned up a number of other small issues that has it working and sounding better than that amp has sounded in years. FYI...Northern's new location is a little tricky to find, keep a sharp lookout though and you'll have no problems seeing the shop tucked back in the corner of the strip mall. read more

I would not recommend this repair shop to anyone. I had my unit in for a problem with a Audio Research Preamp. They say they repaired the unit. When I called and told them it still had the same problem, Mike gave me a line of ........ disinformation straight out of the book of my fault. Unit still needs repair, I would like to know who can do an honest repair these days? Do not go there you have been warned. read more

If I could give 6 stars I would gladly do so. I had largely given up on finding a quality repair shop for my vintage audio gear until an old friend, a true audiophile, turned me on to Northern. As it happens, I was in a tough spot and needed an older B & K amp fixed for an exhibit I was hosting. From James at the desk, to Mr. Mike the world's best story teller, to Ken the guru doing the work...all I can say is they came from Heaven for me that day and I had the amp back and fixed in 3 days and it works better than ever. The longevity of this shop is not accidental, these guys have the knowledge & skill to fix anything, but more importantly, they have customer satisfaction as their overall guiding focus...a refreshing and welcome thing these days. If you come in in the mornings you can enjoy a cup of coffee with a crowd that has been enjoying their morning cup and a little TV together for decades. Prices are very fair and you just can't beat the personalized and speedy service you get here. They sell used TVs, VCRs, some stereo and vacuum equipment too. One of the best services is that they copy 35 mm slides, photos & home movies to DVD Lamp cord repair. We converted a bunch of VERY old stuff and can finally watch it on DVD. This business just relocated itself to Madison Heights, Michigan. It is in a strip mall on John R between 11 mile and 12 mile. I would definely go back and get my vaccum serviced. First off there was many issue with my vaccum cleaner, but I just needed a belt replaced. We dropped it off and within the same day, Mike called me. He was very friendly and identified items that needed fixed and the cost; nevertheless, he did state, that since the belt was fixed, it would work just fine. I felt this showed how honest his business was and not out to take all my money...LOL....When I went to pick it up, the wheels were not rolling very well. He immediately took it to the back and did some adjustment & tada....Good as new!! If you need your vaccum fixed or just need a new belt. I would trust them and he was very reasonalble. He only charged me $10 bucks to change the belt and it looks like he wiped down the vaccum also. I will definely be back and will support this business with any other vaccum needs. :) read more
