Cash only! This is not a fancy place but it's a half mile off the interstate and it's open super early. If you're looking for something super "local," then this is the spot. It's Friendly service this morning with a limited menu. Omelets, eggs, biscuits. No avocado toast or oat milk latte on this menu. Probably not even decaf coffee. I chose the ham and cheese omelet with coffee. I could hear the cook start on it immediately. Definitely fresh and a good portion. Simple and tasty. Note that this is a cash only establishment but they have an ATM. [Review 19545 overall - 1408 in Virginia - 515 of 2023.]

Chef salad and chicken tender salad fresh made. Fresh crinkle cut fries to share. Quaint, small town restaurant. Very clean, very busy. Employees friendly and efficient.

It's good country food with a down to earth feeling and a family atmosphere. The locals talk across the tables and everyone is friendly. My sweetie enjoys their fried chicken the most and I'm a big fan of the BBQ sandwich (which is under $4)! We eat here about once a week since moving to the area about 2 years ago. By the way, their hamburger is the BIGGEST HAMBURGER I have ever seen! We accidentally ordered a double. Lol!

Passing through Buchanan today and stopped by North Star Restaurant. The people, including the patrons, were incredibly welcoming. We were very obviously from out of town and a large group. The prices are incredible, the service was great, and the food was perfect.

Great little place not far from the interstate. This is a place that a lot of locals frequent and you can tell by the friendly atmosphere. The waitress was attentive and took good care of the entire place. Food was good and portions large. The western omelet was very big and full of ham, sausage, bacon, peppers and cheese. Too much for me to finish with the addition of two biscuits. The sign in the men's room got a good chuckle out of me.

Burgers are huge and delicious! Many options on menu that taste fantastic as well. At least a once a week stop for my family.

The food was fresh, hearty, and clearly made with care. My breakfast plate came out hot and perfectly cooked, with eggs done exactly right and some of the best home fries I have had in a long time. The coffee kept coming, and the staff made sure everything was just the way I wanted. For a funny little story: I was trying to snap a quick photo of my plate to show a friend, and right as I lifted my phone, the pancake syrup decided to make a slow escape down the edge of the plate. I panicked, trying to stop it before it reached the table, and ended up with syrup on my sleeve instead. The server noticed, laughed, and brought me an extra napkin with the line, "That is what happens when the food looks too good to wait." It definitely broke the ice, and the whole table around me chuckled too. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a mix of locals and travelers that gives it real character. It feels like the perfect spot to fuel up before or after a hike, or just to enjoy a relaxed meal with friends. Overall, great food, friendly service, and even a syrup mishap that turned into a laugh made the visit memorable. Five stars.

Kind of glad I did, I would have forever wondered what it would have been like. Somewhat limited menu of American favorites but I chose well with the fried bologna. It was fresh, salty, crispy and the bun was nice and soft. I got the onion rings as a companion and they were very well done. Could tell they were home battered and fried almost to perfection (only cause I like them more well done and I forgot to ask). My friend got the cheeseburger and she said it was "very good". I didn't ask if the patty was homemade but it wouldn't surprise me since almost everything else is. Tater tots looked pretty good too. Only let down we're the wings. They were fried well, but the sauce was just a bit lack luster. For a Parmesan garlic I didn't really taste either flavor. It was a nice creamy sauce just didn't give me the flavor I was looking for. We had some strawberry cake for dessert which seemed like your typical box cake but he cream cheese frosting on top was delicious. Just wish it had a bit more of it. Overall, this place is a pretty nice surprise in the middle of the road virginia among the mountains and corn fields.

We went in around 8:00 p.m. the first night, and the staff was cheerful and energetic -- you would have thought they had just started their shifts. That's a huge plus when dining a little later in the evening. Everyone we spoke to said it's a local favorite, and after our experience, we completely understand why. After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to return to those special ones, that have made a difference in my life and highlight them, for the benefit of the public, so they too can have an opportunity to appreciate the qualities of a one-of-a-kind fine dining experience. And Bernard's Gastropub & Eatery in Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. Bernard's was born out of the love of two culinary aficionados turned professionals that in someway have managed to create a restaurant with an environment that transmits this intimate love to the hearts of their customers through the attention to detail in its extraordinary customer service and amazing culinary masterpieces. Today, I felt like dining at this restaurant, which I admire for its consistency in always far exceeding my high expectations of what a fine-dining restaurant should be all about. Not knowing if they would have a table for me at this late time on a Saturday early evening, I drove in my pearl white Lexus to the nearest private parking lot and gave them a call to inquire as if they could give me a reservation for the next ten minutes. A gentleman, who later I found out was named Matthew, and would be my server, answered the phone with a very polite and welcoming voice; answering my question of what was the special dish of the day and to come on down, that my reservation was assured. As soon as I arrived to the small, very elegant foyer in front of the Host's station, he came out to greet me and instantly recognized who I was. My only request was that he give me a low table because at my age seating at a high table was a bit uncomfortable. He went back to see what he could find and ended setting me up with what I consider one of the best tables of the house, and I was so appreciative of his last minute accommodation. The menu was already setup on my table. He poured water from a special bottle into my water glass and asked if I wanted something else to drink. I asked for a Mocktail and since he also was a bartender, he prepared me one of the best mocktails I've ever had. To dine, I started out with their Mussels Carbonara appetizer, which came in a bacon parmesan cream sauce that was simply amazing, and served with toast points. As my main entrée I had the Dinner Special of the Night, the Seafood Trio. It had a delicious, giant size crab cake in the middle, scallops, and shrimps, with parmesan risotto sautéed heirloom tomato, spinach, and nice size asparagus, with a burre blanc sauce. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the high-quality of their food and magnificent ambiance of the place. Everything was so delicious that only one word could ever describe them: priceless! For dessert I had their very famous Butterscotch Banana Pudding, which the chef makes at the moment ordered. It looked spectacular and tasted amazingly delicious: a culinary work of art. What a great way for the Gran Finale of an extraordinary dining experience!
