Cash only! This is not a fancy place but it's a half mile off the interstate and it's open super early. If you're looking for something super "local," then this is the spot. It's Friendly service this morning with a limited menu. Omelets, eggs, biscuits. No avocado toast or oat milk latte on this menu. Probably not even decaf coffee. I chose the ham and cheese omelet with coffee. I could hear the cook start on it immediately. Definitely fresh and a good portion. Simple and tasty. Note that this is a cash only establishment but they have an ATM. [Review 19545 overall - 1408 in Virginia - 515 of 2023.]

Chef salad and chicken tender salad fresh made. Fresh crinkle cut fries to share. Quaint, small town restaurant. Very clean, very busy. Employees friendly and efficient.

It's good country food with a down to earth feeling and a family atmosphere. The locals talk across the tables and everyone is friendly. My sweetie enjoys their fried chicken the most and I'm a big fan of the BBQ sandwich (which is under $4)! We eat here about once a week since moving to the area about 2 years ago. By the way, their hamburger is the BIGGEST HAMBURGER I have ever seen! We accidentally ordered a double. Lol!

Great little place not far from the interstate. This is a place that a lot of locals frequent and you can tell by the friendly atmosphere. The waitress was attentive and took good care of the entire place. Food was good and portions large. The western omelet was very big and full of ham, sausage, bacon, peppers and cheese. Too much for me to finish with the addition of two biscuits. The sign in the men's room got a good chuckle out of me.

Passing through Buchanan today and stopped by North Star Restaurant. The people, including the patrons, were incredibly welcoming. We were very obviously from out of town and a large group. The prices are incredible, the service was great, and the food was perfect.

Cheeseburger -- overcooked and dry with cold bun

I wanted to like this restaurant but if my food today is any indication, I think not. My husband and I ordered cheeseburgers, french fries and sweet tea. The tea was a bit too sweet, but did have a good flavor. The French fries were crinkle-cut and good. The cheeseburger was not very good at all. The bun was cold and the meat was dry and flavorless -- not a bit juicy. It tasted like it had been pre-cooked and just put back on the flat-top to heat. In fact one side of the burger was so dry and overdone that I actually had to cut the "crust" off the meat off to make it edible. The service was slow. In fact, one family, who had been seated before we got there, left because two tables of customers (us included) received their food and both had been seated after that family. They must have been there for at least 20 minutes without being served, because it was that long for us. The restaurant was almost full at 12:30 pm and I think many of the customers are local. I don't know anything about their other food. Maybe the restaurant had a "bad day", but the quality of ground beef was not up to my standards either.

Food is mostly good, but the grits are the worst anywhere - watery, soupy. Service is great!

After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I was also awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And 1772 Rooftop on Main, a very unique restaurant and bar, located in the historic town of Fincastle, Virginia is a perfect example. From the moment I heard about this place I couldn't help stop thinking about going there one day and having a memorable dining experience. One like none other ever before. The owners of this restaurant had that rare creative imagination of coming up with the concept of a restaurant and bar located in a historic building with lots of character and charm. Starting from its quaint handcrafted bar and dining room located next to its semi-open kitchen on the first floor, to the rooftop open dining patio with stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the historic Fincastle Courthouse, originally designed by Thomas Jefferson. This together with the uniqueness of the rooftop patio having a bar made out of an old Beechcraft V Tail Bonanza plane that was purchased from Black Dog Salvage in Roanoke, Virginia. Once a fully functional aircraft is now the center of attention of the 1772 rooftop dining patio. After making a six o'clock reservation for a Friday evening to this family-owned restaurant and bar, I checked on my cellphone and driving on the alternative route of 220 it would only take me 31 minutes to get there from Roanoke, Virginia. I enjoyed the ride in my pearl white Lexus Luxury Edition listening to music on its powerful radio. When I arrived it didn't take long for me to find a huge parking lot conveniently located about a block away from the restaurant. Once inside, a friendly young lady greeted me at the Host's station and confirmed my reservation. I asked to be seated at the indoor dining room where I could see their kitchen and observe their operation, and then I would visit the rooftop on my way out. She leadi me pass an area of beautiful wooden shelves with item for sale, and through a hallway into the indoor dining room and bar, where she handed me the menu. It didn't take long for my server, another young lady, to welcome me, answer some questions about the menu, and take my order. The menu was not large but full of very desirable items that would want to make me return to try them all. I ordered a Pepsi to drink. A House Salad to start off with Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing. And an 8oz tender top cut Sirloin, their Baseball Sirloin as my main entrée. It was served with whipped potatoes and sautéed zucchini & squash. The salad was simply amazing. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of their food. The main entrée was also exquisite. They had a wonderful team of chefs who knew how to bring out the best in every dish they prepared. For dessert I had a slice of their Peanut Butter pie. It was delicious but brought frozen and thus hard to eat. I would suggest they do something to thaw the pie a little like they do in other restaurants for the customers to better enjoy the dessert dining experience. When finished eating, I paid with my credit card and went upstairs to the rooftop. It was wonderful. A full-house of customers enjoying a good time together, with good food and good drinks. All the servers were very friendly and welcoming, creating the ideal ambiance for an extraordinary dining experience and night out.

Real talk: I stumbled upon this eatery years ago, but never had the opportunity to go 'off the beaten path' on our road trips to stop by - I couldn't wait to check this local eatery with their super cute logo! The hubs and I stopped by here and had a biscuit sandwich, a Hot Roast Beef dinner, and one of their famous hand-pattied burgers (which we actually stayed for an additional hour or so, as they weren't serving the burgers until later!). While the biscuit was forgettable, the hot roast beef was so scrumptious! It was so hearty, savory, and stick-to-your-rib deliciousness, and such a comfort meal on a plate! The burger was ginormous, and you can tell that they hand-form the fresh patties; the patty was super juicy and all the toppings were fresh. Service was so friendly, welcoming, and with a smile! The restaurant itself has such a charm, and I'd love to be able to return again to check out their holiday buffets!

My dad used to love to come here for the buffet after Sunday services at the church and we would stop in here for a burger during summers after he picked me up when he got off work. Their burgers are handmade (meaning they are hand pattied) and used to be very good. During certain times when you stop in there will be buffets offered with things like frog's legs and the like so if you want to get some local country fixings you can try to haunt the board for those things. I tend to stick to what I know and go with simple items and wouldn't order anything other than a sandwich or the burger from here. It's simple food with a simple kitchen and it's very good for what it is. But this is not a fancy place. It's a small diner in a small town run by friendly locals. Temper your expectations, if you find yourself here and hungry, it'll hit the spot.
