This place used to one of our favorites and we frequented it. Tonight was a different story. New cook couldn't do the Mickey mouse pancakes which is the only reason our grandkids crave this place. They mixed up the order in front of us. Didn't have the ingredients for the special we ordered and we weren't told until the rest of the food was started. Meaning that order would be delivered much later than rest and that person would essentially have to watch the rest of our party eat while there was cooked. The reason for the issues was probably the loud smell of marijuana that wafted through the whole restaurant. 0/10 recommend Side note. While on a driving trip, we saw this diner listed on a "Food" sign on Interstate 64 East. The diner is the first left after the right turn exit. There was currently no printed menu; we were told "it's on the ceiling" above your head. It is there.. ...but without any prices. We had the turkey player with two sides and a drink. I have visited this restaurant several times over the years and never expected exceptional service. Really only ever the bare minimum. Unfortunately, even that appears to be too much to ask. On my most recent visit, I arrived alone and took an open seat at the bar, which seemed like the obvious choice for a solo diner. I immediately noticed food from a completely different fast-food restaurant scattered across part of the counter. Since it was on the employee side of the bar and both employees were standing behind it, I reasonably assumed they were eating between tasks. In fact, one employee was actively eating from the food while on the clock. While unprofessional, I chose to overlook it. What I could not overlook was the behavior of the employee I later learned was named Betty. Rather than greeting me or taking my order, Betty decided to make comments about my choice of seating to the other patrons sitting at the bar. Instead of speaking to me directly, she chose to publicly imply that I had done something wrong by sitting in an open seat clearly intended for customers. When I asked whether she was referring to me, she confronted me and explained that it should have been "obvious" that the area occupied by their fast-food meal was reserved for the employees. Let that sink in: an employee eating food from another restaurant behind the counter felt entitled to publicly criticize a paying customer for sitting at a customer seat because it interfered with her personal breakfast. The entire interaction was embarrassing, unprofessional, and incredibly disrespectful. The issue wasn't the food. It wasn't the seat. It was the astonishing sense of entitlement and complete lack of customer service displayed by someone whose job is to provide hospitality. If employees want designated dining areas, management should provide them. What should never happen is a customer being publicly singled out and treated like an inconvenience for using a seat intended for patrons. Needless to say, I left without ordering. I will not be returning, and I will be sharing this experience with others. Poor service is one thing. Being openly mocked and confronted for sitting in an available customer seat is another level entirely. This restaurant already struggled with mediocre service. After this experience, it has earned something far worse: a reputation for making customers feel unwelcome. read more

Went here last year while camping nearby and had a great meal. We really enjoyed it and planned to go back. Second time last year they were out of a few things but left satisfied. This year when we went they were out of almost everything, and told us the hot bar was down. We ended up leaving to go to another restaurant. Not sure if we will ever go back. We stopped by here because we had nostalgia for diner food. When we walked in, we were the only customers. The service was great. The food was excellent of it sort. Great diner food. Chicken fried steak was great and the mashed potatoes were better than mine. The Side salad was big enough for a family of four and had much more than just lettuce on it. I was dubious about the desserts because they came wrapped in individual plastic envelopes, but the brownie I had was epic And big enough for two nights to be shared with my husband. The Wyndham Hotel is next to the diner. You actually check in at the diner. This is a cute little place. It is a typical diner. Our server was just starting her first day. She had a few gaps in service but did a fairly decent job of helping us. The sweet rolls were a hit. You can get a meal for under $10. read more

Stopped in for Dinner after a very rough workweek. What an amazing end to a hard day. Best customer service ever, our waiter was friendly, helpful, fun and took great care of us. He made the prettiest ice cream brownie sundae ever too, truly a work of art. Our burgers were incredible. The server never served us. A cook took drink orders and brought them out. She took our food orders and she never returned to our table. The food was delivered by the kitchen staff. The gravy was like soup it was so thin so we sent back two orders. I ordered a side of gravy with my meal and it came out thick but barely luke warm from the microwave. The hashbrowns were also cold. The bacon and eggs were good and fresh but that was it. Nobody ever checked on us after bringing new biscuits and gravy. Most the food was inedible. When we told the wait staff they just looked at us like they didn't care so we informed them we were there an hour and got cold food twice and couldn't eat it so we weren't paying. No apologies or offers to make it right. We left and probably won't return. Which is a shame bc we had a good experience and good food last year he we stopped in. read more

The Monterrey chicken was delicious as were the fries, however i did have to pick through it prior to eating as i requested and re emphasized no mushrooms but then got it with mushrooms. I was going to give a 3 star review because the diner was clean and my server was friendly and prompt. I ordered The Sea Dog. Basically a fried fish sandwich w/lettuce and tomatoes. From the sides; onion rings, fries and something else, I chose fries. Also, my drink was a sweet tea. The ice tea was topping the scale on sweet. I just have to mentally note to get unsweetened tea from now on. I think it's me. My Sea Dog was ok. I should have caught myself when ordering it...I knew there was no way it'd be fresh. Even if flash frozen from fresh... But..it was ok...the fries were the regular Burger King kind of fries. I didn't really like them. I wish I had just ordered eggs and hashbrowns. I asked for a chocolate milkshake to go. That also was just ok. I think this group also runs the hotel next door. (Just fyi) As I was leaving one of the guys that was helping the cook left just before me. He got to his truck and I heard him throw up. He turned around real quick and saw me look at him. This place was a great find! It's off the highway and right next to the Oak Tree Inn. We didn't stay at the Inn, but may consider staying there next time we're out this way. I had the short stack pancakes and bacon and my companion had the ranch plate with chicken fried steak with white pepper gravy (delish), eggs, hash browns, and one panacake. My short stack was just enough, 2 pancakes, and the bacon was fresh. It was quite good. I wished I would've ordered the biscuits with gravy just so I could have some of that white pepper gravy, which I sampled and determined I missed out having not ordered at least a bit of it. If you like diners, and we do, I recommend Penny's. It was clean, really cute, staff was really friendly, food was great, and you can't beat the price, $22, for the both of us. read more

We have been going to Pennys for years and loved it. Tuesday, Dec. 24, we decided to go there to celebrate Christmas Eve. My daughter ordered coke to drink. They were out!! We looked at the menu and decided we would both have the philly steak. They were out!!! My daughter settled on a burger served on toasted rye. They were out of rye!! I ordered the mushroom swiss burger. It was served on a plain hamburger bun, with a burger (which was falling apart and tasteless), a slice of swiss cheese and 4 (yes 4) very thin slices of raw mushrooms. They did give us a discount on the dinner and I suggested they send their cook to Mc Donalds or Hardees to see how a mushroom swiss is made. We will not be going to Pennys again anytime soon. read more

It's a cute little 50s-style diner not far from the interstate with super nice people. My daughter and her husband really like this place and had nice breakfast food (which they apparently serve all day). Unfortunately I did not enjoy my sandwich as much as they enjoyed their meal. I was thinking that this place is like a Waffle House in that breakfast is very good but perhaps the other menu items are not their forte. The food is inexpensive, prepared right in front of you, and was mighty tasty. The wait staff was extremely friendly and talked with me for a few minutes to see where I was traveling to and from.
