Ask the Community - North Shore Community College

Do you offer free computer courses to seniors? specifically how to use Auto Cad or Revit on the computer

Hi Judi.....unfortunately we do not. That would be great though! Have you checked with your local Senior or Community Center? They often do. Best of luck finding what you need.

Review Highlights - North Shore Community College

I started taking courses at NSCC when I was 16 and the college was one small campus -- one building, actually - in Beverly.

NSCC has two campuses: Lynn and Danvers. This is a review for Lynn…read more The commuter rail is right across the street, so it's convenient for people who don't have cars-- or for people who have cars but don't want to drive in the snow. Since I live in Gloucester, the train schedule isn't ideal, but it's better than nothing. My first semester, I took a night class that ended around 9pm. Unfortunately, this meant I had to wait until 11pm to take the train home. The school is technically closed by then, but I got to wait inside until I had to leave. I actually wasn't worried about my safety, but the campus police were more than happy to walk me over and keep me company until I got on the train. It's kind of strange how different presentations/activities are done in the cafeteria, but I guess they just use the space they have. I saw someone talk about the Netherlands, which was kind of interesting, but most of the people hanging around the caf weren't there to listen to the guy talk. I love the library. I spend most of my time at school sitting there. There are a couple areas with fairly comfortable couches, little cubicles with lights/outlets to plug in a laptop, and desks where groups can study. I'm a big fan of the small class sizes. For the most part, I've loved my teachers. Most of them are more than willing to meet for extra help if you want it, and they really do want you to succeed. The quality of the class, of course, depends on the individual teacher. Some classes are, in my mind, high school level, but if you want a challenge, you can find it. Oh, and if you really want to step out of your comfort zone? You can cross-register with any one of ten NECCUM schools, which includes Gordon College, Endicott College, Salem State College and others. Doing this actually costs the same amount as registering for a class at NSCC. Neat, right? I sure thought so. I haven't done it yet, but I hope to register for an Italian class in the fall. (The downside is that many employees at NSCC have never heard of this, so you have to insist that it exists. Here's some information: http://www.northshore.edu/registrar/neccum.html) I didn't want to go to NSCC, but you know what? It's not so bad. I'm saving money by completing classes I would've needed at a four-year school anyway, I'm building confidence by earning good grades at a not-so-intimidating school, and it's somewhat close to home. I don't know if I'd recommend it to EVERYONE, but it's really the best thing for me at this point in time.

There is a big difference between NSCC in Danvers and Lynn. Danvers is a much newer facility with…read moremore resources than Lynn. Lynn's campus was built after the Great Lynn Fire in 1981. If I remember correctly it was built next to where one of the buildings burned down. The empty field next to the campus on Broad St couldn't be built on because it was contaminated. Anyways, the Lynn campus is obviously aged. The building itself is holding up alright and the campus has the less priviliaged students of the immediate area. Danver's campus has the students from more promenient cities such as Boxford, Georgetown, Hamilton-Wenham, Middleton, Danvers, etc. So Lynn's campus is much more diverse from experiencing both. The majority faculty of the facility teach at both locations and the college itself is pretty good. Now, education in Massachusetts is not cheap......but compared to Salem State and U-Mass Boston tuition prices........this place is a steal. Community college is like a disco with books: "Here's ten dollars; let me get my learn on!" -Chris Rock There are many unique clubs and organizations here to be apart of. The faculty seems to care about your success even if you don't. Tuition is $125 per credit, the books are expensive as always. If you want to be financially wise, don't go to a four year school right away. Hit up this place first and get the prerequisite classes finished......95% will transfer within the ctate college system agreement North Shore has. You'll save yourself some money and be able to see two schools instead of just one. -Almost done with NSCC, aiming for UNC: Chapel Hill!

His teachers were wonderful, always attentive, positive and kind, and we're so grateful for his time with Ms Doris, Ms Tia and Ms Miralba. He learned so much in his time here and always enjoyed attending. We needed to make a switch due to some life circumstances, but it was difficult to make that choice because our time here was positive. Nicole is a great communicator, always very responsive and helpful. When our son's transitioned to the next class up, preschool age, he struggled a bit with the change and Nicole helped facilitate a meeting to help ease our minds. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to choose a daycare as a working parent, so hoping this reviews eases the feelings of uncertainty while navigating your childcare search. We recommend MKU to others and think it's been a safe environment where our son has thrived. We've also met many great families along the way, there is a great community there. Thank you to everyone at MKU!

If so, go ahead. The director, Nicole Camarda, I don't even wanna talk about her. She's so mean, fake, and shows no care to the staff. Shaking her little butt and telling people what to do, but at least she does some work, unlike the reception fat girl who just sits there all day, does nothing but snacking (I guess that's why you are fat though), as if the world owns her money. They are always short-staffed, so it doesn't matter if you have a college degree or higher degree- you will get hired no matter what and get the LOWEST PAY as someone who never even finished high school. They won't read your resume because they will literally hire anyone who applied for. Also, the teachers- OMG, ridiculous, rude, unkind, mean. STAY AWAY FROM these classrooms led by (I know both their first and last names, but only first names this time) Angelina, Daniela, Miriam (Infant room), Valentina (Casa room). This is a very ridiculous place to work- I'm telling you. The turnover rate is EXTREMELY high. JUST RUN & STAY AWAY.

Plumfield is a special place - whether your child is quiet or loud, sensitive or bold, artistic or sporty, there is a spot for everyone. I literally saw a sign, a lawn sign, and as soon as I pulled up the website I knew this was the answer. We went in for a day to check it out and participated in a class that asked us to write down emotions that were putting holes in our buckets. We then went outside and burned them in a fire pit. This was exactly the type of place I wanted my son to be. My son was stressed out about the grades and tests and homework at his public school. We loved that Plumfield doesn't "test" their knowledge but rather has them do narration for what they are learning, really thinking about and writing down or speaking what they've learned. Our son works through his math book at his own pace. Beyond the general academics Plumfield teaches scripture while allowing the children to share and have their own beliefs. I love that they do nature study, logic, and the arts (drama, music, acting, etc). And my son is currently working through 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens which he has very much enjoyed. We love the "nontraditional" approach offering our child broader, life oriented lessons. The teachers have all been wonderful and supportive. The director John is an honest, wonderful man who has developed a loving relationship with my son helping him through struggles in his life. Our son says Plumfield feels like a family. We feel incredibly grateful that we were able to find this gem of a school for our son to finish out his middle school years. He is working with Plumfield to apply to St John's Prep for high school and we truly believe Plumfield has offered him the best preparation for his high school career.
