The two-storey Persian restaurant with a patio (for summertime) can accommodate 180 people during winter and 280 people in the summer. The portion of the food is reasonable and it tastes really great. The service seem rather slow though.

I had a wonderful meal at North Restaurant. Located at the intersection of Yonge and Steeles is this beautiful Persian restaurant. They have a really nice patio, so definitely book a reservation! I came on a weekday night for dinner, and I made reservations in advance. The server was very courteous and friendly. Decided on the kashke bademjan (eggplant) and khiar (yogurt) for appetizers. The apps came with some pita bread. They were absolutely delicious! Bademjan is such a unique and tasty dish and this place makes it very well. For the main I got fesenjan - it's a stewed chicken. It has a tangy sweet ish taste - so unique. Everything was cooked perfectly! Finally I got saffron ice cream for dessert - you definitely don't want to miss out on getting that - it's amazing. Also got baklava which was made fresh. The price point was also very reasonable. Between 2 people we paid $30 ish each for splitting 2 apps, 1 main, and 2 desserts. All in all, I'd recommend this spot in North York for some delicious Persian food!

I booked a table for 10 people last night. We had almost a private room for ourselves with a beautiful traditional North of Iran colorful design. It was very nice. We ordered a sample of different appetizers and they were all great specially Eggplant Kabob, Kashk Bademjan and Baghala ghatogh. The main course was very delicious. The portion very generous. The plate was beautifully designed with personal rice with tahdigh. The restaurant offered salad as a promo and we appreciated it. Our waitress Farnoosh was extremely professional, polite and patient. All 10 of us loved our food and we spent 4 hours enjoying the food and chat, I highly recommend the North Restaurant, atmosphere, quality of the food and taste. Our favorite main entrees were Kabob Torsh, Soltani and chicken kabob.

This is a specialty Persian food restaurant which serves authentic food from northern region of the country . This is as close as you can get to food that you can actually find on northern Iran , where people favor sour-sweat mixture . Herb-heavy but not hot spicy . They still serve the usually kabob which is more widely find in any other Persian restaurants . Their servers are extremely helpful and can guide you through menu in case you don't have a Persian companion

Beef kabab and white fish with herb rice

Whenever my friend and I visit Toronto, we make it a point to eat at this lovely Persian restaurant. I like the cozy, woodsy decor. We wish we had a Persian restaurant of this quality in Western New York. Thank goodness a drive to Toronto is easy from our hometown. So much good food and variety "North" of the border. :) Ground beef kabab with zafran rice, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Always a good choice. My friend sticks to this option and it's consistently tasty and cooked just right. I usually order one of the chicken kabab dishes, which are excellent. This time I wanted to try something different. The white fish with herb rice caught my eye. It turned out to be a good choice. Crispy on the outside, fried but not at all heavy or greasy. Tender fish filet on the inside. A good squeeze of lemon made the fish stand out. The herb rice went well with the fish, very tasty. We always leave satisfied. Service is polite and efficient too. And the US exchange rate is a bonus. All around a winner.

Loved the interior design of this place, it was almost like eating outside without the cold and bugs! They really did put a lot of effort and money into it, and I really appreciated it despite never have been to any small villages in Iran that this was supposed to replicate. Food wise, I thought it was good. The meats were very flavourful and I particularly enjoyed the chicken! Even when I had it again the next day, both the veal and chicken were soft and not dry in the slightest. Portions were huge. I feel like the north special could very well be a 2-3 person meal especially with all the rice it came with. I guess considering the portions the prices are decent, but it is more than what I would have liked to pay for a meal. I was surprised though, they do have an extra surcharge for bringing your own cake which is very strange to me. My main concern is really the service. Unfortunately they were super short staffed and we were a big table so I can understand the slow service and not being attentive. However, there was a lot of mix up and orders were missed. I expected a little bit better experience if I'm paying this much for a meal, but overall still a nice looking place with some good Persian food.

My family of 5 ordered 2 Koobideh Kabob, 1 Vaziri Kabob, 1 bademjan kabob and for dessert, the Persian ice cream and we still had leftover to take home! The food Delicious. The meat was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The kabob were not dry at all. You get 2 large pieces of koobideh per plate along with rice and a roasted tomato. The Vaziri kabob comes with 1 grilled chicken skewer and 1 beef (along with rice and tomato). Again, no complaints. This dish was tasty. The bademjan kabob was my favourite- its Pan fried eggplant stuffed with a mixture of walnuts, pomegranate paste and molasses sauce. This should be eaten with warm pita- which is served complimentary for the table. Comes with 2 pieces. The ice cream was bad. The saffron and rose taste was present but there were large chunks of ice which made it very difficult to enjoy. I won't be ordering this again. Service Very slow. Our waiter was nice but not attentive. Came to our table infrequently and wasn't fully aware of the menu items. For all these dishes are bill was just under $85. Well worth it for the quantity and quality of food.

Great quality Persian food, friendly service, reliable. Lots of seating options in the cool indoor environment but also good patio! A Persian friend took me after going for many years with family.

Stepping inside Shomal North on a Sunny afternoon feels like bring me to another world... World which is dark..cool... and full of men (waiters) I have to agreed with John F., the interior decorate does remind me of an Italian Village I been too.. now think about it.. I know exactly where it is!! The interior of Frankie Tomatoes!! The little storefronts, the fake painting of the cliffside on the far wall, the little X'mas lights decorating the trees.... I don't have a lot of experience with Persian food, ok make that once!... I can only compare to Pomegranate Restaurant (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/pomegranate-restaurant-toronto-2) which I just love!! Raw onion, parsley and radish were brought to the table even before ordering. We were told that we suppose to eat them with our food. But what food are we going to eat?? BTW, their wine list are 3 pages long... more than their food choices!! I found the stews are really not as delicious and taste not as good Pomegranate. The chicken here was so over stewed that it does not taste like chicken anymore. The lamb is ok... I have better... But I like how they match the different rice with the chicken and lamb. I found the services here is cold, and the waitstaffs are quite disinterested. Maybe it is how an authentic experience suppose to be :P. I am not in a rush to come back here for another meal....... 2.5 stars

It's a 3.5 star. The kabab and yogurt were both awesome, but it was too hot here without AC on a summer day.

Decided to try this place out for a weeknight dinner as we were in the neighbourhood. We called in…read moreour order and were told it would be ready in 25-30 min. When we arrived, the smallish restaurant was packed with diners (only about 7-8 table in all) and there was a line up of people who were waiting for their takeout orders. We ended up getting our order 55 minutes after, not 30 minutes as we were told on the phone, so minus 1 star. Since it was our first time trying the restaurant, I ordered more food than we needed for our dinner to share with my in-laws who live nearby; family combo 2 and lamb neck dish. Little did I know that both orders would come with humongous portion of rice, which took us forever to finish. The family combo came with 2 juicy strips of well-seasoned koobideh, 1 skewer of breast and 1 skewer of dark meat joojeh kabob, 4 char-grilled tomatoes and good amount of grilled chilies (not spicy). The lamb neck dish included 3, fall-off-the-bone tender lamb pieces that were impossibly delicious. We opted for the rice with fava beans for this dish and it was super flavourful with addition of dill and other herbs. The overall first experience here was good and I hope to try out more of their offerings soon.

I will put it right out there at the start. The food sizes are massive. Most meals come out in big…read moreserving plates topped with a rice mound surrounded by an assortment of side dishes. There is always that initial visual impact of being served that aesthetically-pleasing, enormous rice meal. The meals, big as they are, should be sufficient for 2 people to share. It will be even good enough for 3 people who are light eaters. The rice comes in 2 types and there is also some butter available to lather onto the rice. I personally do find it a little gimmicky and the meal sizes just a product of clever visual marketing. Most of what makes the whole portion sizes big is made up of rice which is not really a high value product item. The actual food itself or the protein while more than the typical meal elsewhere, is still not proportionate to the amount of carbohydrates that you get here. Later on in the meal, you would naturally get full fast if you try to balance out eating the food portions with the amount of rice served. We ordered the Baghali Polo & Lamb Shank ($25.99), Ghemei (Veal) Stew ($18.99), and the pureed eggplant dish Mirza Ghasemi ($11.99). The eggplant is highly recommended to have for starters. The cubed veal stew that we ordered pairs well with the saffron basmati rice. Their stew dish also comes with potato chips on the side to add some crunchy texture to the meal experience. I personally did not like how the lamb shank came out. I find it a a little undercooked. The muscle fibers of the thick meat chunk was not tender enough for my liking and the meat did not properly hold onto the rich flavors of the sauce it was cooked with. The whole dining experience was excellent. Our servers were very nice and polite. There were Persian decorations in the space, and some traditional music playing in the background.

Darbar had absolutely hands down the most delicious kabob koobideh and polo (rice) I have ever tasted. I'm also picky about my koobideh and this was the absolute BEST. I wish we lived in Toronto so we didn't have to wait until another trip to go back! PROS: The kabob had the perfect amount of flavor and was not too dry and not too greasy. The rice also was made to perfection, again fluffy and buttery tasting without being greasy or heavy. Both were mouth-wateringly delicious! In addition to the main entree, everything else, including the side vegetables were all incredibly fresh and tasty. The portion size was huge. At first I thought this place is expensive but then I realized that the size of each "seekh" (skewer) was almost double other places. My kids loved that it came with bread (surprisingly other Persian restaurants seem to skimp on that or charge extra). I loved the "sabzi khordan" (greens) that came with the bread. Even the cheese and walnuts were tastier that what I have at home! The service was excellent. A lovely young women named Pegah served us and couldn't have been any nicer. She wasn't fake nice but actually genuinely nice. I loved the outdoor seating. It was a little loud but they had nice Persian music playing which added to the atmosphere. The tea was delicious and served nicely. I'm surprised other Persian places have the nerve to offer not fresh tea or tea bag tea. This was definitely the real deal. Most people who eat Persian food drink their tea after but I actually love it with my meal. I did not like the spice they added to the tea but the nice server replaced it with regular Persian tea without the spices. CONS: If you're super sensitive to spices you may not enjoy eating inside as the aroma is strong. Most people may not notice or even care (I don't think the other members of my family even noticed) but I had to sit outside. If we go back to Toronto in the winter when outside seating is not an option, I may just do take-out. The same spice that made the inside smell so strong was also what they put in the tea. I wish I knew what it was...perhaps cinnamon or something similar? Overall, I will be dreaming about this place until our next trip back. Lucky you folks from Toronto who don't have to wait!
