We came from NYC to attend a school reunion and my review is really for the Kebab Torsh! I have had kebabs in NYC and LA. This Kebab Torsh was amazing! It was a mix of both worlds, Kebab and Fesenjan! The sauce on this Kebab tasted like Fesenjan! This is a Northern dish and now I will have to come back to Toronto for this! I ate here with a group of 8. The place is a bit hard to find - the parking lot is private for a hotel and looks like it charges, but they let you out for free. The entrance is awesome, full of Persian artwork and sculptures that remind me of the British Museum. The food is excellent and includes a variety of classic Persian cuisine (Ghormeh Sabzi), along with some fairly hard to find dishes such as Alo Mosama. I also tried pomegranate ice cream for the first time! Everything was very tasty, the tahdigg was great and the service was very good. Asked for the meet to be medium rare and everything came out well done. All the kabobs was supper hard and difficult to chew. They forgot one of our skewers as well. The service is off too. The apprizers came out at different times and an excuse for everything. Place has potential to do much better that what it's doing but needs better management. read more

Stepping into the restaurant, you automatically get this really traditional decor that feels like you've been transported into a Persian stone house restaurant! I LOVE me some Persian food, so I had my standards set pretty high. We started the night off with some appetizers that came with in-house made bread. However, my favourite part of the night was the main entrees. //APPETIZERS// Although, there was an open part of the kitchen where you saw a lady making the bread to order, it unfortunately tasted very dry & bland. The bread was also very thin & crackly. We did order some great dip appetizers though so that helped salvaged the bread. Maast Mouseir (3/5) - shallot in yogurt, was just OK. Kashke Bademjan (5/5) - My go-to order at every Persian restaurant since it's such a savoury medley of eggplant and fried onion goodness. I love the touch of mint they added. //ENTREES// Baghali polo & mahicheh (5/5)- Lamb shank stew with broth and dill rice. I chose to have half shirazi salad (tomato, cucumber & onion) and half rice. Even with that request, they still gave a TON of rice so the portions were very filling to say the least! To kick up the already AMAZINGLY unique dill rice, try 1) pouring some of the broth soup onto the rice and eating it, 2) adding butter into the warm rice, OR 3) sprinkle the sumac powder generously. Alright, now that I've raved enough about the dill rice.. the lamb. It was juicy and FALL OF THE BONE perfection and seasoned wonderfully with no 'gamey' taste! The soup had the same seasoning and lamb flavour but it was really salty so I couldn't finish it. Gheimeh Gademjan (5/5) - another hearty and flavour packed stew! The cubed lamb pieces were very tender and moist, while the vegetable component of the eggplant & split peas soaked up the savoury stew and blended the flavours wonderfully. //OVERALL// I absolutely loved the decor and food here. Nice decor and friendly staff. However, food is hit or miss. Kabab torsh could be good some days and not so good on others. My biggest complaint is about their rice. The grains are not supposed to curl, that's a sign of low quality. And to be honest, the rice just doesn't taste very good. Considering how important rice is in Persian cooking, Gilaneh disappoints on many levels. I am giving a 3 star review because some of their appetizers, including the shallot yogurt dish and the cured olives, were actually pretty good. Returned to Gilaneh after several years, and let me tell you that when I read recent reviews, I was nervous. I had always enjoyed Gilaneh's food, ambiance and service, but some of the recent reviews made it sound things were going downhill. Happy to say that's not the case at all. We were a party seven joining them for a Friday evening dinner. A couple of servers pleasantly set everything up for our table. The menu was accessed online using our phones. Our server was knowledgeable and helpful guiding us with our choices. We ordered a variety of appetizers and dishes, and everything from their house-made bread to hot and cold appetizers to main dishes were delicious. Kashke-bademjan which was an eggplant-based dish was amazing. My Cornish hen was cooked to perfection, juicy and tasty. The restaurant allowed for substitution of mixed rice (barberry rice and dill and broad been rice) for the plain rice, which enhanced our chicken and beef kabobs. I was a bit skeptical going to this place after seeing the reviews since a lot of people seemed to have had negative experiences here. With that being said, I was pleasantly surprised. Location: tucked in the North of Toronto, the place is easy to find. I liked the decor a lot, reminds you of Persepolis and southern iran. Food: we got a mix of dishes as appetizers. We had the spinach borani, kashke bademjan and eggplant kebab. The bread is freshly baked and tasty, so try not to eat too much of it so you can enjoy the actual food. The eggplant kebab was really good! With ground walnuts and pomegranate molasses stuffed, it was the perfect mix. For main dishes, we got a mix of kebabs. Generally, the lamb and beef ones were better tasting than the chicken ones. The kebab torsh was specially good. In terms of dessert, we were too full to get anything heavy, so opted for some tea and small baklava. Persian baklava is not the same as Turkish or Palestinian baklava so keep that in mind. But given that the tea is unsweetened, the baklava's sweetness is just right! Service: this is where the lock comes. Our server was great, but the problem here is the shortage of servers. The rice had a terrible texture and was mushy. Usually, when I go to Persian restaurants it shows that there has been good effort in making the rice, but not here. The meat was not properly cooked. Why do they make bread and then let it sit at the pass-through so it can get cold and hard? We had one round which was fresh (nice and warm) and that made a huge difference. The yogurts and dips were delicious. We had a good assortment. The meats were a real disappointment. Most were dry, but the chicken was decent. The fish was also dry. I think it could've been much better. I found it quite odd that they served Caesar salad, Greek salad, and Italian dressed house salad to accompany the main courses. How authentic is that? I suppose it's because they are located in a hotel? Service was friendly, but not the most efficient. It wasn't even busy for a Friday night. I think one person was in training. 2.5 stars. On a recent mini-trip to Toronto with my Persian family we stayed at The Westin Prince and decided on giving Gilaneh a try before heading back to the airport. The restaurant has a cosy, rustic, romantic, village kind of feel overlooking beautiful green trees. As you walk in you are welcomed by a wonderful scent of Persian bread. We ordered a few dips, mast mousir was my favorite. I had a Caesar salad (nor Persian but delicious) and torsh kebab for my entree. It was very tasty. Good persian foood:) i recommend the kabab torsh and the golbarg kabab if you're making a visit. Also the baghali polo ba goosht is good.
