    Climbing wall
    Renee B.

This literally may be my favorite place in all of Indianapolis, and I cannot believe that I haven't reviewed it before- I am there 2-3 times per week and have been since they opened! Let's break it down into sections, shall we: Climbing: NMB has a continually rotating set of challenges on their several, huge walls of boulders. They rotate out a section twice a week, so each time you go there is new challenges to work on. If it is your first time climbing ever (like it was when I started going- never though I would be able to do it!) the staff is very nice and they give you an intro to climbing. Everything is color coordinated- red is the easiest, then yellow, etc. If it is your first time on the wall, I guarantee that you will be able to do even a few reds and you'll have a blast. If you do fall, there are several feet thick mats beneath you. Half the fun is watching those around you- there are some awesome climbers there that do incredible climbs. Maybe one day! You can rent shoes- or you can buy shoes there! They also have chalk, and anything else you would need to climb in their shop. Food, drink, and coworking at Top Out Cafe: One thing I love about TOC is that it is a coworking space. There are tables with outlets, chairs with pull up desks (near outlets), and comfy couches (near outlets) that face a large projector screen often showing a sporting match, animal planet, or an animated show. You do not have to buy food or drink to work here- but the options are so good why would you not! The smoothie bowls are my absolute favorite thing to get here- the pistachio bowl is my go-to, and I'll get protein powder in there if I have just worked out. They are huge, filling, and tasty. The taco bowl, quinoa salad, tacos, chicken wings, and chia parfait are also good- but really you can't go wrong. The drinks are also great, and they always have a rotating latte or drink that is seasonal and fun. Classes: I have taken yoga classes, hula-hoop dance classes, circuit classes, and lifting classes here. And they have all been great! All the instructors are very nice and know their stuff. And I am always sore after. I have never felt out of place showing up and doing something I've never done before (like hula-hoop dancing). The yoga classes are amazing, and in the summer their sunrise yoga class happens out in their "backyard" - it's amazing. They also bring in The Sound Gardner every month or so to do a sound bath, which I am obsessed with. The events: There is always something going on at North Mass- it kind of feels like college in that way! There are trivia nights, karaoke nights, Settlers of Catan nights, speed dating nights, queer nights, college nights, kids nights, etc. Anything and everything that you could want. When people in their 20s and 30s mention how hard it is to make friends in Indy I say- have you been to any of the NMB events? Parking: There are two huge, free parking lots right outside. I have always been able to find a spot (even though it is continually getting busier). The locker rooms: The locker rooms are split between male and female. They are clean, large, and safe. I put my stuff in a locker, choose a combination, and lock it. There is also a sauna! 15 minutes in there after a climbing session is the perfect way to end your workout. I'm sure I could go on and on about NMB, but truly it is a shining light in Indianapolis. It is what people mean when they talk about a "third place."

This spot has become such a tremendous addition to the community and especially to the neighborhood. It's amazing all of the programming and offerings you can find under one roof for all ages. A sampling: -yoga and fitness classes -cafe with healthy and vegan eats on the upper level -space for coworking and meeting -kids climbing playscapes -courtyard for picnics -climbing for all levels -fitness attire store -meeting spaces You'll find Indy's crunchiest crowd here- hence the name, the minute you walk in, you'll feel as if you've been transported to Boulder, Colorado. I've thoroughly enjoyed my cafe visits and partaking in some of their fitness classes. I look forward to bringing my toddler for the kids climbing room in the near future.

    And they're dog friendly!

Love my gym! I've been a member since they first open and it is great. Climbing is so much fun and they change the walls frequently to keep things interesting. The work out equipment is solid as well and there is plenty of cardio equipment. Each locker room has a sauna as well which are maintained nicely. They host events several times a year and the community is great overall. Not to mention dog friendly!

Went here for the very first time on their $5 first Friday, it was busy and very pack So every first Friday of the month it's $5 days pass from 5-9pm They also have some first Friday arts If it's your first time they give you a quick lesson on bouldering but the $5 day pass includes all their amenities including some of their classes, What's fun is that they have a cafe, and kids only bouldering area which was so cute! You can also bring you friendly pets here!

This place is inclusive and that's why I appreciate this place and enjoy coming here when I do. When you arrive, you'll be able to park at two different parking lots and usually there are a few spots open. They even have a bike repair area outside which is nice. When you go inside, you'll see the bouldering walls which are colorful and their cool art mural at the check-in area. Everyone who works there is friendly and helpful :) They have all gender restrooms by the front which is cool! They also have separate bathrooms/locker rooms as well. There gym area is great and there are so many windows which brings in so much light. Anyway, I would highly recommend coming here! They're very beginning friendly (they also have a child area) and for those who want a challenge and great training equipment, you'll definitely want to come here!

Did a day pass at North Mass Boulder and had such a great time. First went climbing with a friend who goes often. It was nice to have her to help me throughout the process. However, they give a great intro conversation before you get started so if you were to go alone you would 100% know what to expect. Other than the climbing they have a gym and sauna which I found to be awesome quality. The have a cafe upstairs with food and lots of work space. The food and drinks were great. The people were very kind. I can't wait to go back!!

I've only climbed once (with a harness) and I'm scared of heights, so I've avoided checking out North Mass Boulder. This was a huge mistake. I went alone and signed up for the intro to bouldering. We were a small group of three people with varying degrees of experience. Kelsey was our instructor and made us feel so comfortable. We learned climbing terms, safety tips, and how to handle different situations. I decided I had to go back and took a friend this time who had a little more climbing experience (also harness only). I did a day pass, which was only $22 (with shoe rental) - the same price you would pay for any other boutique, workout studio. We bouldered for over an hour and then grabbed a beer at the Top Out Café. Highly recommend - especially for those looking for something fun and active to do this winter.

Love love! We spend so much time at North Mass. they have everything! They have a full Boulder climbing section, which they change the patterns often. The other half of the gym holds gym equipment and weights. I love the treadmills! The locker rooms are always clean and there's a sauna! North mass also provide some great classes. They're yoga classes are wonderful! Have kiddos? They have a separate room for kids to climb, they even have classes! Upstairs they have Top Out Cafe, breakfast, lunch and dinner (even beer). Prices are so reasonable. The cafe area is also a coworker if space with private conference rooms, which you can reserve. If you want to just go to the cafe and work you don't need a membership. They have everything and parking is super easy. Go! Join!

Seriously such a nice gym. It's so nice and spacious. It doesn't smell bad. The problems are quite interesting and fun climbs. They have a pretty extensive gym, and they have slack lining outside and yoga upstairs.. I was also shocked to find out that they also have a cafe and bar upstairs. This gym really has everything..

Y'all! This place is heaven. Such a fun atmosphere! I was so skeptical when my friend insisted i check it out. But it's legit the best workout and so much fun. They also have a full service gym, strength classes, yoga studio, cafe, and bar. I wish I lived closer but I am definitely coming back!

What doesn't this place have!? They have rock climbing walls, a gym, a cafe (with great teas and coffee options), outdoor space with hammocks, classes, party rooms for kids and so much more. You can buy passes, or a membership. Prices aren't too bad for all the amenities they offer and it's so close to downtown. Huge parking lot and such a great addition to this part of town. We're so happy to see all they're doing in this area. Staff was friendly and helpful (you'll have to sign waivers). If you haven't stopped in yet this place is amazing!

I LOVE THIS CLIMBING GYM!!! I have been a member at North Mass Boulder since I moved to Indy in 2021, and it has been consistently one of my favorite places. There's a reason that my friends and I come here nearly 3x a week - it has everything. The bouldering area is massive and has a great mix of routes for all levels. This is very important to me because when I first joined the gym, I was pretty new to climbing. The spectrum of difficulty and incorporation of different techniques into the routes has allowed me to continue to grow over my year and a half as a member. In addition to being a climbing gym, North Mass has a regular fully-equipped gym, a full roster of yoga and group fitness classes, a beautiful courtyard where they put on events, their own cafe with great seating, and group meeting spaces. I love going to the Top Out Cafe after spending couple hours climbing or for a cute study spot, and I especially love their smoothies. In September, they hosted a Drag Brunch at the cafe and it was amazing! My friends and I had a blast, and the breakfast sandwiches and bottomless mimosas were 10/10. I also love how welcoming and inclusive North Mass is. They truly have built a community where everyone feels welcome and comfortable!

Make sure to bring a mat, towel, and water. They have available mats and towels for you to use. Such a great experience and the staff! I roll up at a rebellious 7:36 PM, since class started at 7:30, only to find the door locked up like they were hiding national secrets inside. Two women behind the counter looked at each other, then at me, like I was a raccoon trying to break into their trash cans. One slowly came over, cracked the door open just enough so that her body had enough room, she stood at the door and said, "For safety reasons, we can't let anyone in after 5 minutes." Mind you there is an entire lobby and boutique that I could have been invited into. I blinked. "Safety reasons?" She explained it was because of "the weights." Ma'am, it's Pilates, not a WWE SmackDown. If a stray 3-pound dumbbell is all that stands between me and bodily harm, maybe you should consider issuing helmets. I mentioned it was my first time. She gave me a pity "awww" and told me to come back Saturday. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town, but even if I wasn't, I wouldn't return. They treated me like a Jehovah's Witness at a front door: cracked entrance, fake smile, no eye contact. Girl, I'm not here to sell salvation. I just want to stretch. Also, tiny detail, but I'm 98 percent sure it's illegal to deadbolt the door of an open establishment. If the hot room gets a little too hot and catches fire, how exactly are the Pilates faithful escaping? Through interpretive dance? If they had simply welcomed me in, explained their policies like normal humans, and offered to help me reschedule, I'd probably be writing a very different review. Instead, I got passive aggressive doorkeeper energy. As someone who is literally a news personality, it took everything in me not to blast them on social media. But I try to wield my sword wisely. So here we are. On Yelp.

I have been practicing yoga religiously for almost 18 months, but I had never experienced an outdoor yoga class. It was time! I'm so glad that my first outdoor yoga class was with Invoke, because the instructor who led us (Jill) was so amazing. She challenged us and encouraged us, and she also adjusted my poses a couple of times and it helped me a lot. One of the adjustments during savasana helped me to relax deeper and release the tension I was holding in my shoulders that I didn't even realize was there. The outdoor yoga class was held at the marina in Eagle Creek. It was a beautiful spot to gaze out onto the water and into the trees as we breathed deeply and moved our bodies. Be prepared to deal with some goose poop and ant hills, though. But that's part of being outdoors, right? We, the people with yoga mats, are invading the space of animals and wildlife -- we are the interlopers here. If you take an outdoor class, I suggest bringing a big towel to lay on the ground underneath your mat. It will help. After this class, I now want to practice outdoors more. It was so nice to be in a plank pose and see a roly poly wander near my mat, and gaze at the clouds while in sky archer pose. I also want to visit Invoke again (maybe during one of their indoor classes) because I felt so welcomed and left super smiley and centered.

Lisa led us in a sun-related flow, with lots of sun salutations, of course. I love Lisa's style of teaching. As we were settling on our mats at the beginning of class, she started with a very brief explanation of the origin of yoga, in the area that is now India, and shared her thanks that it had made its way all the way around the globe. I really appreciated that she took the time to mention this. All throughout the class, the ideas she shared and the words she said really had an impact on me, and a couple of times, I got a little teary! I haven't cried during a yoga class since my mom died almost two years ago. I wish I could remember exactly the things she said, but I was in the present moment and lost in the flow, and her words just washed over me and settled into the cracks. I've been practicing yoga daily for two years, and overall for three years, and my class at Cityoga was the best yoga class I've experienced yet! It's a bit of a drive for me, but I'm already plotting ways to make sure I fit a Cityoga class or two into my schedule each month. I am happy to say that 8 students were present at Shane Photography for the first session of Inner Peace Yoga's new Tuesday evening Beginner I yoga class - including myself and hubby. Inner Peace Yoga owners Carol and Charles Crenshaw teach in the Himalayan tradition, which is what I first experienced years ago and still one of my favorite methods of practice. While vinyasa flow, power yoga and hot yoga seem to be all the rage these days - and they certainly serve a great many individuals - I prefer a slower pace where postures are held and/or repeated. I also like to incorporate breathwork and meditation into my practice. That is why I enjoyed IPY's new Carmel class so much - it really reminded me of what made me interested in yoga in the first place - when I left I felt at peace, more focused and de-stressed. Normally a late-nighter, I was ready for bed at 10:30 and slept like a log. I also tend to favor IPY's approach of building one's practice over time In other words, if you're totally new to yoga, you begin at the beginning and establish a foundation of yoga postures, breathing awareness and technique and movement. Then, as you feel comfortable and your instructor thinks you are ready, you progress to more challenging classes. In this way, you are less likely to get injured or simply become disillusioned with your practice. Plus, you really learn about yoga from the inside-out, in my opinion, which makes it much more possible to develop a home practice. Another bonus: IPY offers classes, workshops and other events on complementary subjects such as meditation, ayurveda, chanting and the like, as well as retreats. These are particularly helpful if you are more interested in expanding your yoga practice beyond postures on the mat :-)
