Its leadership curriculum wasn't even on my radar at first. I expected my son to be angry at me when I picked him up after the graduation ceremony at the end of the summer camp. To my surprise, my defiant teenager thanked me for signing him up: He loved his independence without his parents; he made many new friends and met his role model in the youth staff who ran the entire camp. (Adult staff there are responsible for safety, meals, and guidance. ) He requested to join the youth leadership program that fall. Next summer, he led a group of five small kids and had a bittersweet experience of "being a parent." My husband and I certainly had some good laughs. Once, I lost patience with him and did not give him a chance to explain himself. He "calmly" asked me to read the effective counseling section in his White Stag Leadership training binder. In short, this program helps not only my child grow, but also us parents grow. I can't recommend White Stag Monterey more. By the way, White Stag Monterey are one of the key helpers in Monterey Half Marathon and Big Sur Marathon. Those enthusiastic kids provide consistent high energy for all runners at the snack tent.

He came home with messy hair, dust all over his clothes, and a huge smile on his face. He excitedly told me that one day he wanted to become Staff so he could help other kids. Over these four years, I've watched him grow in so many ways. He learned practical skills like packing and teamwork, made lifelong friends, became more confident, and--most importantly--became more willing to help and encourage others. I truly believe his White Stag experience will be one of those precious memories he carries with him for the rest of his life. A heartfelt thank you to Connie, Steve, Tim, and all the adult staff for your time, patience, encouragement, and dedication. What you give these kids goes far beyond a summer camp--it's an experience that helps shape who they become.

He was not excited to attend this camp; but after the 2 weeks he gave it a 7 out of 10. As a parent, it did not meet my expectations for a junior high student. At the end of the writing camp for 2 weeks, they walked away with a Podcast. They worked on this same project for 2 weeks. It was also a story based Podcast. My expectation would have been more focused on junior high being able to improve writing for the school work needs, which is more related to books or reports. On a positive, I think my son walked away with a better attitude about writing. But I am not confident the camp actually improved his writing.

With the same tournaments, as other clubs. In addition. . . bonus surprises . . many of them, , , Play-n-stay fees 2 days before the tournaments costing $100s extra, not to mention fees for the same tourneys you get free in other clubs. Coaches mislead the kids that show and participate into thinking they play because they attend and favoritism is rampant. This is not a club but rather a collection of well off kids creating factions within the team. There was a clear delineation and team play was not part of the agenda. Coaches bad mouthed players to other players and did not hold back on there feelings for the director. Halfway through, parents were bombing text back and forth about where the heck the money was going along with the surprise play fees. Volleyball has become an expensive upper class sport. Over the years I have witnessed many kids drop from the sport due to elitist attitudes, cliques, favoritism and outright lies of participation. but I have never witnessed a more disorganized unprofessional club. All clubs have there issues and you have to let the kids be kids, but the possible money grab here is really weird....the parents allowing it is weirder still. Shop the club for your kids. Don't settle because they are close.
