I have used a Handyman for many years who is retiring. I thought i would give someone else a try and came across North County Carpentry, via Yelp. The job was small but Shaun was on time and prepared with all the right tools including a chop saw, table saw, hack saw and drill. His work was precise and at a very good pace. I had to replace custom gate slats that were different sizes that also required precision holes to be drilled so they could be placed back onto the metal frame, in the right spots. We had a complicated double door project that I made even more complex bu customizing the opening and the door size. We had an opening cut into an existing downstairs (weight bearing) wall, that was not perfectly sized for the two doors I needed mounted, barn door style. Add to that my railing was too long, and my header board was too thin and not supportive enough. Enough of my situation, Shaun evacuated my situation and put me at ease right away with suggestions and a plan. His professional approach, timeliness, and woodworking expertise knocked our socks off. Shaun did a meticulous job on my yard fence modification (keep the darn dog in) and on the deck in my garage. He knows his stuff but is also open to suggestions, and gave me thorough explanations of the process and each solution. I met Shaun in 2006 when I hired him to help with renovations on my previous home. I originally hired home to do some stucco work, but in addition ended up having him do tile work and installing a bamboo floor. I am extremely pleased with both the results of his work and the manner in which he did it. We've hired Shaun for multiple jobs and plan to hire him for more. Prices are fair and reasonable, especially for the quality of work. He doesn't cut corners and pays attention to the details. We had a bunch of dry rot on the exterior of our home and instead of just replacing the wood, he primed everything first to avoid future dry rot issues. Work done to date: installed new exterior door to garage, fixed my self install issues with door from garage to house, installed new front door, installed new rear sliding door, and repaired/made safe our railing which was lose and unsafe. Future work will be new pergola in the back yard and new fence. Shaun is honest, hardworking, reliable, good with communication, flexible, and offers good suggestions for the work you want done if your on the fence about something. Also, he's good with dogs. I have known Shaun for about 6 years and used his skills on many exterior repair projects, including replacement of siding, trim, doors, beams, posts, etc. on homes and other exterior wooden structures like patio covers, decks and gazebos. I continue to exclusively use Shaun on a regular basis for repair work I am not qualified to do on the homes I paint as a licensed painting contractor. He does really nice work and, of equal importance, takes care of my customers as I would. One example of this is (unlike most carpenters) he is not allergic to paint brushes and uses a good primer on all 6 sides of the wood he replaces before installation, doubling the life expectancy of the repair. read more
