I was disappointed by our experience with NCG. First and foremost, I feel that this company prioritizes the interests of the landlords over the prospective tenant. In order to submit the application for our apartment, we had to pay a $100 application fee, put down first months rent, and sign a document stating that we agree to sign the lease within 2 days of approval, otherwise forfeiting our first month's rent. At this point we had not seen the lease nor were they able to provide any info about the landlord. However, we really wanted the apartment so we went ahead with process. After a week's worth of waiting we were approved for the apartment, however we did not receive the lease for another week. We later found out after a lull in communication that our agent was out of the office due to medical reasons, but nobody else at the company stepped up to expedite our leasing process. This brings us to move in day. At this point we had signed the lease and were heading to NCG to drop off the deposit and pick up our keys. Upon our arrival we were informed that there had been a typo in the lease we signed and it was actually a longer leasing period. Keep in mind we did not find this out until move in day! At this point we were in a vulnerable position and had no choice but to sign the addendum prolonging the lease. Lastly, when filling out the application that was later approved and signed off on by our NCG agent, there was a section to list anything you require of the landlord. Our only demand was for the landlord to have the apartment cleaned before we moved in. Our landlord texted me the week of our move in date to ask if we could hold off moving stuff in until 3pm on the 1st of the month so he could bring in a cleaning company to which we complied. Fast forward to move in day. We arrive to our new place, boxes in tow, only to find that the previous tenants are still there moving things out. Not only had the landlord not brought in a cleaning company, but when we questioned our agent about it, she said there was nothing she could do because everything was now between us and landlord. I would not recommend renting through NCG. Since they only have their hand in the initial leasing process, it becomes a very disjointed process and there is an apparent lack in communication. While our agent Natina was very nice and appeared knowledgable about the property, she seemed unorganized when it came to important legal paperwork. read more

NCG was the realtor on the sale of my three flat. They were wonderful! I was out of the country for the majority of the time and Valerie would run and take care of whatever I asked her to in order to make sure the showings were a success. One of my tenants was on crutches and she told me that when Valerie would go over for showing she would take the dogs out for her and put water for the dogs so she didn't have to get up. Valerie was very informative and super responses at any time of day. It was such a pleasure working with such a wonderful group full of good people! read more

Perhaps if I had worked with another agent I may have had a different experience. Perhaps not. But thanks to the scheming and conniving antics of one North Clybourn Group employee not terribly long ago, I was left to be homeless within a two week period. I won't name names, but his name rhymed with Peeve. Fitting, isn't it? It's pretty simple really. I flew to Chicago, met with an NCG agent, he showed me through the typical reel of apartments graduating from boiler room-quality to debatable to the liveable, and then there it was. Nestled inside a quiet side street getaway. A perfect two bedroom apartment with my name on it. And the current renter's name, but hey... that's erasable. It fit all of my qualifications. Gigantic bathroom, close to CTA, street parking and a local landlord, not a company. Peeve had finally steered me in the right direction. I wrote him a deposit, checked my bags at ORD and flew back to the homeland where I packed with delight. I was moving into the apartment of a lot of peoples' dreams! ....or was I? Peeve called a few days later to let me know the apartment availability changed dates and I wouldn't be able to move in for another six weeks, not two. Oh no! Well Peeve, isn't this your fault for not checking? No way!, he says. The landlord changed the dates on him. I counted my losses and one day while I was YouTubing a way to build a tent from cardboard found on city streets I received a peculiar phone call. The landlord of the apartment called, which is a big no-no with NCG, to ask me why I withdrew my application. HUH? Well dude, ya changed the move-in date and that's no good. He quickly rebuffed Peeve's lie and said the move-in date was always six weeks away. What has Peeve been telling you, little girl?? Kids, do yourself a favor and hunt for your own apartment, or at least go with an agency that allows applicants to speak with landlords. Because really, who needs Peeve the Middle Man screwing with our dream apartments? NOTE: The owner has since contacted me and informed me that Peeve is no longer employed by North Clybourbn Group, hooray! Simply going by her response to my review, behavior like his is unacceptable. I'm giving one star because our agent was nice. She also helped us a little after we moved into a crappy apartment (after, admittedly our fault, allowing ourselves to be pressured into taking the place; seriously, watch out for high-pressure sales tactics) and it turned out the landlord (whom we weren't able to talk to until after signing the lease) had blatantly lied about the laundry situation. (The lease and NCG listing claimed laundry in the building, when in fact the other apartment had laundry, and the landlord expected us to befriend them and use theirs). I would like to let NCG off the hook for a bad landlord, but it's not the first time I've heard of similar situations, and it leads me to believe they are hired by landlords who don't have the skills to rent out their own crappy apartments, and reassure tenants that they won't disappear and change their phone number multiple times. My friends used them recently, and ended up in a stressful struggle over whether they could paint over the horrible current paint job; their agent was not very sympathetic or helpful at all trying to facilitate communication with the landlord before signing the lease. read more

I've had the misfortune to deal with this place on two different apartment searches. The first time I was looking on my own and gave a list of criteria I was looking for in a place. After waiting for a long time Liam showed me around to a place completely different than what I was looking for. When I reminded him what I was looking for he whined that he had to make a quota that month and it's tough for realtors. I don't care. If you can't do your job you shouldn't be doing it. The next place he showed me was in a junky little area barely in the neighborhood I was looking for. It was a big room, nothing else. I didn't ask for a studio, I wanted a one bedroom apartment. "There's the bedroom," he said, pointing to a corner of the apartment. "That's not a bedroom, that's a corner." "It's kind of a bedroom, see?" He actually said that. He only mentioned the huge hole in the wall when I brought his attention to it. At least ~try~ to make it look presentable. When I showed no interest in either of the places he sobbed some more about how tough his job is. Meanwhile he's driving a nice, new car. The second time I was looking for a place to move in with my girlfriend. She scheduled the appointment. If I had known who it was I would have called it off. We were met by a woman. Candy, I think her name was. She showed us one apartment that was actually what we were looking for except it was in a bad neighborhood and too small and it smelled like a tomb. When we expressed our displeasure, she scolded us on what we could get for that price range and to be more open minded, not the best tactic if you want someone to sign. The place had a back porch she seemed proud of and said it had a beautiful view. I looked down and the backyard was full of trash and garbage. "It's across the street from a hospital so that's convenient if you ever get hurt," she says. Knowing that neighborhood I don't doubt the possibilities of that happening. They need to get their act together. The realtors in this place are pathetic. They don't do anything but waste your time. Both times I found a great place on my own without having to go through any realtors. I'm surprised they're still operating. Lots of suckers around I guess. Don't be one of them. I'm skeptical of these positive reviews. If I wasn't so cynical I would say they were placed there by the agency. I wouldn't put it past them. God knows they aren't using their time helping out apartment seekers. read more

I have to say, my roommate and I had a completely different experience with North Clybourn Group than the vast majority of other yelpers. After our bad experience with another leasing agent we were hesitant to work with another one, but we saw so many great apartments on their website we couldn't resist! If you are looking the the Ukrainian Village/Wicker Park area no one seems to have the quantity or quality of apartments that NCG has. Our leasing agent Liam listened to what we were looking for, the provided us with 6 or 7 apartments to pick from. We choose to look at 3 that fit our budget and interests. We ended up falling in love with the first apartment that we saw and put a deposit on it the same day. It is incredibly reasonable, beautiful and so spacious! (I am totally in love with my apartment) NCG handled our paperwork quickly and kept us updated throughout the entire application process! Liam even called to see if we liked our apartment after move-in! On the whole I highly recommend them. read more

This review is for Mardy. As far of apartment agents/brokers go, this is the rudest one I've ever met. Rude enough for me not to consider a single listing from his agency. My system is pretty organized: I find a listing, I write down the address, phone number and agent's name. I then call said agent to set up a showing. When the agent does not pick up, I leave a voicemail with my information stating the listing I am interested in. Mardy decided to call me back from a number different from the one that I had written down. He didn't state his name or the listing I had mentioned in the voicemail. Instead of patiently trying to work out the listing, he then proceeded to berate me about how "you guys don't know what you're doing." When I pointed out his unnecessary aggression, he began cursing and ranting about how he should be spending mother's day with his mother. I politely excused myself from his presence. To which he gave me some unsolicited advice: to get my shit in order. Mardy. Some unsolicited advice for you. If you're having a bad day, don't take it out on the consumer, especially when they acknowledge their role in the mistake. Happy mother's day. read more

I tried using them for an apartment search two apartments ago. I had a similar experience to Susan M where I only saw one apartment that was out of my price range, not quite near where I wanted to live either. The apartment that she showed me was decent, but lacked a dishwasher for something out of my range. I thought that was pretty weak. Also, I had to reschedule it a number of times because the agent couldn't find anyone to babysit her kids. They bill themselves as better than the apartment services in the city, but aren't. Stick to Craigslist and the Reader for better results. read more

They don't push you into buying a place like many other realty group. But watch out many of the landlords of the places they show aren't that great. I had a bad landlord and a couple friends also ended up with a bad landlord. The places they show you are ok, and watch out they will show you a few out of your price range. Overall if you have the time stick with craigslist. read more

Curtis found us several listings, drove us around to view the houses, was personable and knowledgeable. He followed up with us and modified the search results to our tastes which he picked up on during our first viewings. I would definitely suggest against working with North Clybourn. I have sent emails over the past month and after 4 emails and NO response I am done trying to use North Clybourn. I had no problem with the locator I used in Dallas. I was immediately sent every suitable listing in the areas I was looking for with the options I asked for. You will not find this with Cheryl or Michelle from North Clybourn Group. Cheryl promised me a list of places to look at then handed me off to Michelle who also promised me listings. It's been two months and several emails and I have not heard from anyone. The most painful thing about the whole process is that I was told by both Cheryl and Michelle to look on craigslist and let them know what I find................... First of all, their job is to look WITH you! Do not let them feel you need to look by yourself. Second, they get paid for putting you into a location.... So again why would I want to find my own place then help you get paid for it? Save yourself the trouble and either use someone else or look on your own. read more

YAY North Clybourn Group! I love Keith! He is pretty awesome! He showed me my last apt and I loved it! It is now time for me to move and Keith was helpful again as well as completely and totally respectful of my time. NCG is currently showing the apt I live in and while they try to always give a 24 hour notice for apt showings it is virtually impossible. With that being said, it has never been less than a 2 hour notice and after working with other apt leasing groups who may show up unannounced, this is quite nice. NCG's team are rockstars. read more

Moving can be a chore. And trying to find a place that meets your unique needs is even harder. And let's be honest, craigslist, although it's great, provides an absolutely terrible user experience. You really have no idea what to expect or what you might find in these "steals" of a place that find themselves on craigslist. I wasn't exactly sure how leasing agencies worked or how they were different, but a friend recommended that I check out North Clybourn Group. I am so glad we did. Curtis was phenomenal. He listened to what we were looking for and showed us some incredible places that we would have never found on our own. He kept in touch, let us know about new things that were popping up on the market and was very attentive to what we were looking for and took great care in taking us to places he'd carefully picked for us to check out. All in all an incredible experience and I commend you to give these guys a shot. read more

I had a pretty limited window of time to find a new apartment (and a limited budget), but after only two meetings with them I had found an amazing place to live. Very friendly attitude, easy to talk to, and did not feel pressured at all. I had excellent correspondence with my agent through e-mail regarding updates and trying to find a place to suited my needs, and I never felt awkward or like I was wasting their time during phone conversations, or in person. They continued to work and help me find a place, after the first round of showings did not quite hit the mark for me. Very straightforward and honest people. Recommended. read more

Avoid this property management company unless you're looking for a condescending and slow as molasses experience. My partner and I recently submitted a rental application through them. When we called to find out if we could do anything to expedite the application (ie make sure current landlord responds, provide documentation, etc.), we were met with rude, condescension of "let me explain how this process works--we'll let you know when we are finished"...only to later get a call saying that my partner's employer hasn't responded. The process continued like that. And they took us through the ringer to get approved. I could go on for paragraphs about the lack of logic. ...6 days later, we got approved and were told we would get a lease in the "next day or so". Two days later--still no lease. We declined the lease/apartment. $100 in application fees wasted. Poor communication. Slow property managers. Zero consideration for the needs and situations of others. Rude condescending tone of at least one of the girls there. We confidently chose to sign a lease with a landlord that we trust even with it being a more expensive choice. read more

We relocated a year ago and was recommended to see Mardy at north clybourn by a friend. We were happy with our experience. He showed us 5 very different places in several neighborhoods. The tactic I think is to show 3 crappy places, 1 so-so place, and 1 great place last so you immediately want the best of the bunch! One of the places was a garden apartment that was FUN HOUSE FREAKY, the ceiling was slanted oddly and low. While in the apartment I was experiencing vertigo and immediately was worried what would happen when I was tipsy, needless to say we didn't go with that one. They have so many agents there that it is definitely hit or miss and some times of the year are probably crazier than others when apartment searching. read more

i came into the office on monday and made an appointment for today with john. i told him all the areas i was interested in viewing apartments at and he told me let's meet up on wednesday. Wednesday is usually a half day for him so we met at 10am. i came in, we went and viewed an apartment. yes, A single apartment. then he drove me back to the office. i asked him 'that's it?' he replied 'yeah, that's it.' what a waste of time. i don't know if he was trying to get home early (he kept talking about how he had to clean up before his girlfriend came over) or if he just didn't feel like showing me places. all in all, very disappointed. i think i'll stick with craigslist to find a place. read more

Two friends/ soon-to-be roommates and I came to Chicago to find a place to live. Moving from LA, we didn't know much about neighborhoods. We had a few ideas, but really lacked in context. I had been searching online through Craigslist to learn a bit about the real estate and rental markets, and I used Wikipedia and some good old fashioned phone calls to Chicago-area friends to find out more, but essentially, we were still taking somewhat of a shot in the dark. Before our trip, I scheduled appointments with agents from several of the big agencies who post on Craigslist. John Bartl from North Clybourn was our final appointment, and maaaan were we lucky! From my initial emails with John, he was extremely welcoming and professional. When we met him at the North Clybourn office, he drove us to a few locations, and along the way he pointed out great restaurants and eateries, bars and music venues, and many other local neighborhood attractions. He was a true Chicago and Wicker Park expert, extremely cordial and accomodating, and helpful throughout our search process. Before we even found our place, we really hoped we'd find the perfect new home with him because he was so much more thorough and knowledgeable than the many other agents we'd met. And we did! We found the most amazing place, a total steal in a killer neighborhood, and it was an exclusive NCG listing. Check out their listings-- their style is truly unmatchable and the staff was fantastic throughout. Hopefully we'll move in on March 1st and I can honestly say that our first few months in Chicago will definitely be more enjoyable because of John's great tips! I found an apartment on craigslist that was being shown by NCG. The person showing it was Andy. By the time we decided to rent it, someone had already taken it. Andy contacted us later to let us know it was available again. He was extremely thorough and answered my questions within minutes. I can see where some of these rental companies can be a nightmare. I think it all depends on the person you are working with as opposed to the company. Andy was on top of everything and made accommodations to make sure we got the apartment without someone else slipping in. read more

We're living in an apartment that is using this company to rent out the apartment we are currently living in. The agent informed us, out of the blue, that he had already scheduled a showing without consulting us first. My husband told him , it was an extremely inconvenient time, Evening and we have a small child. He seemed not to care and said the tenant was flying in to look at it. He's also unaware that he's showing an apartment that is in desperate need of repair and finishing from when it was built last year. Know that this is the kind of apartment they will try to get you to rent. The agent who leased it to was was from NCG and refused to take calls and emails when we're trying to get someone to fix this place. read more

It seems like the majority of the apartment rentals this year are going through rental companies. I am very pleased with the job that North Clybourn Group did helping me and my roommates find the place we are currently living. I would have to recommend Curtis as an excellent agent. He was really cool and chill and easy to talk to about rentals. If there was a problem he helped us out. I also love that these agents are willing to pick me up at my apartment and then visit the properties I and he found meeting our description. We were having a bad day and not finding any good places when Curtis texted me this address and it was amazing. We live there now! :) I am also very happy that the Wicker Park location is close to where I lived. Can't imagine how much of a hassle it would have been to go elsewhere. If anything, I would say these folks are TOO friendly and helpful. They were a great help for finding me a place when I was moving cross-country (and new to Chicago), and not only explained the neighborhoods but also gave me plenty of options in my price range. To top it off, they drove me around all day to show me each place until I found one I liked. This is a completely new experience to me. I never felt pressured, and everybody I've dealt with there has been professional and upbeat. After I signed on a place, I even had a few courtesy follow ups to make sure everything worked out. I'm very surprised to see the 1-star reviews for NCG. After reading many of them, it seems many people are angry with things that don't necessarily reflect on NCG, often being the landlord at fault. Granted, the place they found for me is managed by another company (the ubiquitous M Fishman & Co), who besides the insistence on renewing leases each year (as opposed to switching to month-to-month, maybe that's more of a west coast thing) has been just fine. They fix crap when it breaks -- quickly! -- and keep the building in good shape. Can't complain. read more

My roommate and I had a great experience with our agent, Michelle. We were pretty vague about exactly what we were looking for and she showed us some great apartments in areas that were what we had described. I don't have a car so it was extremely important that easy access to the train was available, and I often work out of home so I need a lot of space. As we all know, a lot of space with great location doesn't come easy, or at a great price, but she found it for us! It was an apartement we overlooked and she suggested we just "swing by" on our way to another apt that we chose. We fell in love with it. It has everything inside the apartment that we want and need at a price we can both afford! It doesn't neighbor the train station, but it is in the center of two main streets, with easy access to anywhere by bus or bike. Furthermore, everyone in the office was extremely friendly and seemed genuinely interested in our interests. Michelle was able to get ahold of our landlord and push all the paperwork through quickly and easily, without any inconvenience to us. Overall this was a great experience, and I have had to deal with many real estate agents in the past. I was convinced that Craigslist was the way to go these days, but I just didn't have time to search by myself. After how easy this was, I will be sure to refer my friends and return to North Clybourn Group the next time I have to move. read more
