I went to Berkeley Thursday Farmer Market after walking from Downtown Berkeley to the FM - it's about 1mi or so (15-20 min). It's from 3-7pm year-round on Shattuck & Rose near the CVS in North Berkeley Gourmet Ghetto. They have lights so even though it gets dark earlier now you can still shop. That's GREAT! Lots of Fall items now: Butternut squash pears Fuyu persimmons Frog Hollow Farms was selling their pastries for 1/2 off at 6:15pm. It depends if they have lots & trying to get rid of their stuff. I got a large chocolate cherry cookie $1 (reg. $2) and a bag of the mini cherry chocolate chip cookies for $2 (reg. $4 i guess). Galettes were on sale too. Ici ice cream has a cart selling ice cream. That's very cool. I got a pumpkin ice cream sandwich on gingersnap cookies for $4.25. Ice cream was very mild, but cookies were good. Hodo Soy Beanery was there. I can't wait to do their tour of their new facility in Dec!! Organic Gravenstein Apple Cider - Looks good. Will get another time. Flacos - Unique vegetarian Mexican food. Will try another time. Saint Benoit Yogurt has a stand. Hog Island Oyster Company was there Highland Hills Farm - grassfed beef, lamb & goat Happy Boy Farms - certified organic produce OctoberFeast from SF has breads & pretzels ($2). Didn't get anything, next time. I hope to go back one day.

Small market. No more than a dozen vendors. Good for what it is....a local market with familiar offerings.

It's got a warm neighborly vibe, and there are always toddlers and dogs playing on the grassy strip, musicians playing and people reading or chatting under the sun.

A must for us every single visit is the Honey Glow pineapple -- if you haven't tried one, you're missing out. They are incredibly sweet, almost like biting into pure sugar, but in the most natural and refreshing way. It's the kind of fruit that's hard to find at your average grocery store, and Berkeley Bowl delivers consistently. Beyond the pineapple, the quality across the board is impressive. The blueberries are plump and flavourful, the oranges are bright and juicy, and the wider fruit selection never fails to catch our eye. It's clear that real care goes into sourcing what ends up on those shelves. For anyone living in or passing through the East Bay, Berkeley Bowl is absolutely worth a stop. It's one of those places that makes grocery shopping genuinely enjoyable, and the produce alone is reason enough to visit.

Not as reasonable as they used to be back in the day, but reasonable enough. I love the bulk section of foods. And I love the fact that the organic food is not as expensive as it is in other places, but it has a really good quality. They have a nice selection of foods and you can get a lot of different things. They do have some specialty sections, such as English foods, Italian foods, Mexican foods, Asian foods, etc. I can cook something from another cuisine and often find those ingredients there. I could find lime leaves for a dish that I was making and they only cost $.99. They also have banana leaves that I can buy if I want to use. The meat counter is nice and the people who work there are generally very nice. Another thing I like about the store is that it's nice and clean. The aisles are OK and you can pass by. And when waiting in line for your food if people are shopping, it can get a little crowded, but it's not uncomfortable. The only thing I would tell you not to do here is to return something because they do not want to give you your money back even when you do have a receipt. And when they do give you your money, you get all kind of attitude. I would suggest coming here, which is something that I do when I'm in the area. I usually go to the other Berkeley bowl because it's closer to the freeway and I can drive up quite quickly. But I forgot, this used to be a Safeway, so unlike their original location, which is now a car dealership, and before that was a bowling alley, this space was built for retail of food. I like that I can always find something here when I need to.

There was minimal smell to the durian and the flesh of the durian was freeze burn - instead of the creamy texture of durian, it was more like bad sorbet due to icey texture. I had hoped to really enjoy it since I had very good AAA Black Thorn durian while in Malaysia last summer. Unfortunately, the sales person was really dismissive and rude to my parents, talking down to & interrupting my parents' excited comments. One particular offputting moment was when my parents casually brought up Costco durians in conversation to each other and the sales person immediately cut off my parents to say that we should just go to Costco if we want lower class durian. I think there was definitely some major miscommunication. Maybe we're just not the target audience, but then who is the target audience if not fellow Southeast Asian durian lovers?!?!? We ended up leaving the store & not buying anything because of the service and I'm just really sad that someone would talk to my aging parents that way :(

I started going every Saturday about 3 weeks now to pick up freshly harvested veggies. They setup a table right at the entry of the barn, and they are wearing masks, so everything is very safe. We pulled in through the gates and saw a small field of flowers to the left, along with a shed-like structure and a house in the back. The right side was pretty empty; I'm guessing whatever was growing there had already been harvested. We stood around for a few mins pretty confused about how it all worked. We found a sign saying that CSA members get to cut for free and a pricing chart for non-members. There were clippers and a knife sitting next to a stack of boxes, so we grabbed one of each and headed for the garden. The selection wasn't quite what we expected, but we still got a great bunch of flowers and sunflowers. Some were a little difficult to access from the walkways, so we just tried to be as careful as possible. When we were done, we tried to pay, but there wasn't really a designated place to leave money, so we just stuck it under a box inside the shed area (I hope they got it!). Very cute place! A little confusing for first-timers, but overall a nice experience.
