North Bay Construction has been my go-to general contractor for over a decade, and I recommend them without hesitation for both major renovations and smaller repair work. ** Long-term projects and scope ** Over the last 10+ years, they have completed three large projects at my home, adding roughly 2,500 square feet of new space. This has included a two-story vaulted-ceiling entertainment room, a workout room, three bathrooms, a master bedroom, a home office, and an entirely new facade, all integrated seamlessly into the existing house. On top of that, they have handled more than a dozen smaller jobs for me, such as a half-bath remodel, a larger bathroom remodel, several leak repairs, and most recently an insulated storage area. ** Quality, follow-through, and fairness ** Their workmanship has been consistently high-quality, and just as important, they stand by everything they build. On the rare occasions when something was not quite right or needed adjustment, they returned and fixed it promptly with no pushback or debate. Their billing has always been fair and transparent, and they work efficiently without dragging projects out longer than necessary. ** Professionalism and neighbor relations ** North Bay Construction's team is professional, respectful, and easy to have on site over long periods of construction. They are polite and thoughtful with neighbors, which matters a lot when you are doing large additions that affect noise, access, and parking. I've seen them navigate those complex neighbor dynamics with patience and tact, helping keep relationships around us positive during disruptive phases of the work. ** Responsiveness and problem-solving ** One of the things I value most is how quickly they respond when something needs attention. If an urgent issue comes up on site, they are often able to come by within the hour to assess and address it. The team is smart, proactive, and willing to jump in rather than letting problems linger, which has given me a lot of confidence throughout each project. ** Overall recommendation ** After working with North Bay Construction on multiple major additions and many smaller projects over more than a decade, I trust them completely with my home. They combine strong craftsmanship, fair billing, excellent communication, and real accountability, and I plan to continue using them for any future renovations or repairs. read more

John and his team did our full house remodel, and we are so glad they were our partners on this project! During the quote process, he brought all of his subs in to prepare the most comprehensive estimate. It gave us the confidence that there wouldn't be surprises along the way, and our project finished largely on time and on budget at an excellent quality. We lived nearby during construction and checked on the house periodically. The crew was great and the work was neat. On fridays the space was always swept and cleaned up. In contrast to other projects in our neighborhood that seemed to idle for periods of time, things moved forward at all times. If one part was delayed, Judit our wonderful project manager would move another piece up. Obviously with a project this scale there were challenges. Some things needed to be redone, etc. But, John was always such a professional in dealing with each item. We felt like he took accountability and worked with us the find a solution. Lastly, we'll say that many of his subs have worked with him for years and are true craftsmen. We are thrilled with how the project turned out and would work with John again in a heartbeat. read more

John and Judit head up an amazing team! Everyone we worked with was friendly, courteous, flexible and professional. They did a terrific job and kept on schedule. We would definitely use them again! read more

John and his team were a dream to work with! We had a more complex project and they stepped in on relatively short notice to fit us into their schedule. Throughout the project, John was reliable and transparent. If he said he was going to do something (e.g. meet us, schedule the plumber, talk to the city, etc.) it always happened. We had some minor delays (normal for most projects) and John always took accountability for these situations, bringing well-considered solutions and go-forward plans. Like most homeowners, we don't do major renovations repeatedly in our lives and have heard so many horror stories -- being able to work with a team that is professional and trustworthy, with a high bar for quality gave us the peace of mind to know we were in good hands for one of the largest investments we have made in our home. read more

They produced stellar work throughout the entire ground floor rebuild. The level of detail and expertise resulted in a finished product that landed it in "Spaces" magazine. The team was wonderful to work with and I've recommended them to friends who have had their entire home reimagined. I'm already looking forward to our kitchen and master bath remodel. read more

The team at North Bay are great. John Fox is a very good at managing schedules and his crew do really high quality work. We had a very tight schedule and the team stuck to it. This is exceptional in my experience. I would definitely hire them again. read more

I'll start by saying that working with John and NBC has been an absolute pleasure. I've worked with several contractors over the past 10 years on various home improvement projects, and this is the first time I feel I found someone I would want to work with again. NBC did an exterior renovation on our house in 2023-24. It was an extensive project that took ~8mo to complete. As with any construction project, things got delayed because of unforeseen issues (some related to weather), a few things didn't turn out as we envisioned cosmetically, some things had to be redone, etc, but what I appreciated most is that John took complete ownership of it all, remained kind and understanding throughout the process, assigned people to make up for the delay, re-did the items we weren't thrilled with to make sure everything was done to our liking (without charging us for it). He genuinely cared, and we are thrilled how our home turned out! On a personal note, one quality that stands above everything else is that I can trust John. For me it all starts and ends with that. read more

A much overdue review of my experience with John and North Bay Construction. Last year they completed a bathroom remodel for me, and I couldn't be happier with the results! From start to finish, they were incredibly friendly and easy to work with. John and his subs were communicative throughout the entire process--I always knew exactly where things stood and what to expect next. Every subcontractor brought in was professional and courteous, and it was clear that everyone took pride in their work. I appreciated how diligent they were about cleaning up at the end of each day--it made a huge difference. Overall, I highly recommend John and North Bay Construction to anyone looking for a reliable, respectful, and skilled team for their home project. This was my third time using them and I'll definitely be calling them again for any future renovations! read more

I can't sing enough praises about NBC. I had a smaller project (1 bedroom ADU complete tear out and remodel after a fire) and selected this contractor because John and Judit provided me with am honest, transparent, detailed, and thorough bid. Throughout the process, NBC was responsive, communicative, timely, and really surprised me with their level of service. All of the sub-contractors John engages with are experts in their area and very professional. Several years after completion of the project, I'm still very happy with the results and still show off some very subtle contractor-things that spark joy (OCD plumbing lines and back panel, thoughtfulness in planning symmetry around support posts). Any construction knowledgeable visitor always comments on the quality of the work I've had done. I'm looking forward to working with them in the future. read more

I probably couldn't count the number of contractors we've hired throughout the years. North Bay Construction is without a doubt the best we've ever worked with. John and his crew completed a to-the-studs renovation of our 1906 kitchen in 2023-2024 and knocked it out of the park. Totally blown away.  The things I appreciated most about John and his crew: - high-touch, detail-oriented, and communicative - a modern operation, with deep experience executing and detailing all kinds of projects (from historic/traditional to ultra-modern) - a deep bench of dedicated subs and in-house, experienced carpenters. I've never seen tight scheduling like this before, and the work was all immaculate - a collaborative approach. John was flexible, guided us where necessary, and genuinely cared about delivering a result we'd be happy with - a respect for our home. All crews worked super clean and kept the job site spotless and contained.  You won't regret hiring North Bay Construction. We can't wait to use them again. read more

We did a top to bottom, full home remodel with North Bay Construction and highly recommend them. Working with John and Judit and their team has been incredible at every step of the way. From the start of the bid process, they brought in sub contractors to give us the most accurate estimate possible. They hold themselves and subs to a high standard of quality and make sure the work is done right. When unexpected or tricky issues arise (as they inevitably do with remodels), the NBC team was easy to work with to find a solution. They are overly communicative and make sure every question gets a satisfactory answer. We've already recommended North Bay to several friends. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that we're thrilled with how our home turned out and the top advice we'd give anyone embarking on their own remodel is to hire NBC. You'll be so glad you did. read more

Extremely pleased working with NBC and John and Judit and the entire team. Our 1890's Victorian home was due some updates including a new kitchen, moving the laundry up to level of the bedrooms and creating an office/storage room at garage level. From the start with planning, through to the very end - the communication was always timely, clear and comprehensive, the workmanship flawless and customer care the very best we have ever experienced. A true, true pleasure - we HIGHLY recommend! read more

NBC team (John and Judit) have been an absolute pleasure to work with and continue to be so. They oversaw construction on our home in 2022 including a full kitchen gut and reno and many other projects throughout the home. The quality was exactly what we expected (very good!) and everything was on time. Most importantly, communication was extremely clear, open and honest. The minor snags were handled very professionally and I was never frustrated. John and Judit continue to be the best resources for all things related to home ownership and we are thankful to have worked with them! read more

NBC team (John, Judit, carpenters, etc) are highly professional and high quality general contractors.  I would engage with NBC again on all my home projects and look forward to the next one.  The entire experience was a pleasure!  (1) Scope of job:  NBC renovated the entire exterior of my house, including demolition, new windows, carpentry, bolting/bracing, insulation, water-proofing, concrete, stucco, plastering, lighting, paint, roofing, permitting.  (2) Timeliness: NBC worked strenuously to ensure the project was completed on time.  The entire crew, including sub-contractors, committed to showing up on time or early and completed each division/piece on time.    (3) Quality: NBC rigorously vets their sub-contractors.  Every sub-contractor has high standards and is passionate about their craft.  Every team left the site well-organized and clean.  (4) Communication & Organization:  NBC is highly experienced, so the coordination with carpenters, sub-contractors, and permitting was seamless.  They anticipated my questions and needs and were very responsive to requests and changes.  John sent a weekly update on the upcoming week, and checked in regularly during the week. read more

It is with great pleasure, admiration and respect that we offer our highest recommendation for the work done by John Fox and his team at North Bay Construction. We have been involved in a number of building projects over a period of four decades. North Bay Construction is, without doubt, the best. The condo remodeling project began before Covid and proceeded nicely. Once the virus hit, John and his team followed all required safety measures. Once they were able to return to work, the project came together seamlessly. What makes John and his project manager, Judit, so unique is their superb communication and follow through. No matter what questions we had, they always reported back to us in a very timely manner. We preferred email and that is what they used. He always made time to meet with all of us as needed including the architect and designers. Deadlines were precisely met. We found his subcontractors to be excellent and highly skilled. His on-site manager was always generous with his time and skill. Once the project was nearing completion, John made certain that we were satisfied with everything. He even stepped in and helped us with some items that were not part of the original contract to be certain that we were pleased. He and his team went beyond the call of duty constructing a superb remodel for us. We recommend North Bay Construction without any reservation whatsoever. He treated us with friendliness, courtesy, and professionalism that is usually only seen in a small town where everyone knows everyone else. We will certainly ask him to help us again in the future when the need arises. You will not be disappointed with John, Judit and their team. In fact, you will be thrilled with the results of working with North Bay Construction. Bob and Judy read more

We hired NB for our extensive house remodel and couldn't be happier! NB has a great crew and works with subs who do beautiful work. They were accountable and communicative throughout the entire process and worked with us as a team when there were any challenges. There were still small touch-ups that needed to be done after we moved in and NB was on top of it to ensure that everything was right. We couldn't recommend them enough and will use them again for any future work!! read more

John & Judit are top notch. They are extremely professional, without being business-only. They care about the clients and projects that we work on together and are attentive to schedule, ordering, and quality. It's difficult to do things on a budget in this town, and the quality of project management that you get with NBC is hard to beat. Myself and my team have the honor of working with some of the best contractors in town frequently, and NBC is one of them. We highly recommend working with NBC on your next project. read more

Look no further, NBC is exceptional We found NBC in the fall of 2017 when searching endlessly for general contractors for a full remodel we were doing to our home in San Francisco. Kitchens, baths, plumbing, heating, paint, floors...the works There must be too much business in the city because many of the high end GCs we met with were cocky and noted that they didn't even want to consider a job if it was less than $500k. Unbelievable! Our first meeting with John Fox at NBC was exactly the opposite. John was pleasant, knowledgeable, and seemed genuinely excited to work with us. He took the time to understand our vision, and even suggested designers that we might want to work with for floor plans, kitchen & bath layouts, and cabinetry. Over the coming weeks we met with John and Judit numerous times and agreed on the full scope of work at a reasonable price, and then the NBC team got to work. Everyone knows that a full home remodel comes with its set of challenges. Every home is unique and you never know what you're going to encounter when you open up walls and see what's inside. This is where the NBC team shines. We encountered everything from faulty plumbing, to a worn out furnace, to leaks in our roof and siding...we also decided to change some things along the way, including install some new windows, changing the locations of a few doors, and rewiring the electrical. Alberto, the foreman we had on site throughout the project, was phenomenal in explaining everything that was going on and presenting us with our options. It was clear that he knew what he was doing, and the NBC team took great pride in doing top notch work. John also checked in with us weekly on site to review the progress We only had a couple of issues with subcontractors throughout the process but every time we were frustrated John and the NBC team worked through the issues in a calm and straight forward manner, always leaving us feeling like he had our best interests in mind. Thanks to John, Alberto, and the whole team at NBC we now have a beautifully remodeled home. If you are looking around for a high quality GC in San Francisco I'd stop right now and contact the folks at NBC Construction, you won't regret it! read more

This is a limited review, as we went through the bidding process and opted to go with another contractor. In retrospect, I wish we had chosen to work with John and his team. He was punctual, thoughtful about our project and what it would require, made a number of visits to our home with his subs to ensure that his quote would be accurate, and he was a easy to communicate with. read more

We used North Bay for a guest bathroom renovation. The foreman on the job, Hector, was absolutely wonderful, incredibly responsive and thorough. Hector went out of his way to do small things I asked for, and he did a seamless job of lining up the subs. He's simply a great guy. John, the owner of North Bay, was also very responsive when it came to the punch list. He too is a great guy with an enviable work ethic. I would use them again in a minute. Just one small bone to pick (and this is something I've noticed with contractors across the board): I agree with Nicole S. who said that John is a busy guy with a lot of different projects to juggle, but unlike Nicole, I didn't feel at all that our project was John's #1 priority. He repeatedly mentioned that ours was a tiny job that he was doing as a favor to the designer. It made us feel like loose change. It's much nicer when people you hire make you feel like no one else matters. read more

After a major flood in our home, we were scrambling to find a quality contractor to repair the extensive damage that had occurred, which gutted three floors of our house. We met with many contractors, most of whom did not meet our standards to get the job done in a timely manner, or have the expertise to get the job done properly. This all changed when with met with John Fox from North Bay Construction. Immediately, my husband and I felt he could handle the job, both in time constraints, and with his extensive expertise. Of course, the real proof is what happened after, and John and his crew never let us down. All of his contractors, (and there are many) are top notch, high end performers in their field. I was so impressed with the quality of their work. All of the communication and billing was also handled by Judit with professionalism and with a great attitude. There was weekly email updates and he was always a text or phone call away. It had been about four months since we have moved back into our home, and it is absolutely gorgeous! I cannot say enough good things about North Bay Construction...I would not hesitate to hire them again. Thank you to John, and all your crew! read more

John and his team, alongside with our awesome designer Rachel Seldin were the crew who demolished our existing kitchen and rebuilt our kitchen and living room area to a beautiful, modern, open concept floor plan. The result is stunning and I cannot believe how different our home looks. John and his team were very communicative with every detail, something I really didn't expect from any contractor and always ensured that my husband and I were happy with every little detail. As with any project there were changes to the design and unexpected challenges but John was very flexible. He and his team have a very high level of customer service, they are in constant communication with each other and us always letting us know what the plan is. If you need a contractor who is responsible and genuinely cares about your project, NB Construction is who you should call. read more

We are glad that we hired North Bay Construction for our home renovation. John and Judit are super easy to communicate with. Best of all, they respond very quickly through texts or emails. It was our first renovation, so we knew nothing. They guided us through everything and we truly appreciated that. We also like their crew, especially Alberto and Hector. We visited the site once a week to check on progress and answer any questions the crew had. Would recommend to do the same if you have time because there were many construction details that were good to discuss live. Renovation is not an easy task, but you will be in good hands with North Bay Construction. They are trustworthy and reliable, and delivered impeccable work, on time, and on budget. read more

We'd love to recommend John Fox & his company, North Bay Construction. We used him for our kitchen & 2 bathroom remodel of our Victorian house in the Mission in 2013. We used him again in 2014/2015 to carve out a section of our garage to make a playroom/guest area and he also re-built two decks as part of a large backyard renovation. John Fox is an excellent communicator; he kept us appraised of progress & next steps at least weekly, if not more. He is quick to respond any time you need him. Fox is also great at explaining everything that needs to be done and gave us a realistic expectation of cost & time involved. He's also great with pulling all necessary permits, letting you know what you can do, how to get around anything you can't, ways to keep costs down, etc. In addition, he worked well with the many different crews that were involved in our project (designer, landscape contractor, subs, etc...). After the job was completed, John checked back in to make sure everything was still OK with the work they completed. read more

In the interest of being accurate I am going to respond to your response. The leak in which you are referring to was in our upstairs bathroom; work that John had nothing to do with and one that we had no problem paying for once that was determined. The leak that took place in our newly constructed living room had everything to do with John's work which is something he did not take responsibility for. In fact his work led to a huge ceiling crack in our upstairs that John refused to recognize, and in fact requested that we provide timestamp pictures of the ceiling before his work started to show that there was not a crack prior to him beginning his work. I ask you who walks around taking pictures of their house in areas that are not, in theory, going to be affected by work happening in an entirely different area? I did however provide pictures of a stud that he removed with the old nails still in the wall, yet John still did not accept responsibility. John's explanation to the leak was, "After reading the email we forwarded to you, you will clearly see that there was no paper in your walls. Given the above and due to the fact it's an El Nino year, it made the inevitable happen." El Nino year? Seriously? Is it normal to have leaks in a home because of heavy rains? After having a structural engineer out to the house to investigate the issue (and John wanted to send his own engineer out but by then my wife and I determined that we did not want him a part of any solution because of his incompetence) the findings were confirmed that John removed part of a jack stud that was, in addition to support an old window that John removed, was also supporting the upstairs window. This caused the upstairs window to shift allowing rain water to enter the house and puddle in the newly constructed area. Now the downstairs door, the new door that John framed and installed, is now also bowed from the weight of the upstairs. John's lack of ownership of his removal of the support structure after my sending him pictures is crass, delusional, uneducated and infuriating. The action or rather lack of action of John has costed us another $4000 to fix. Furthermore, John's crew was about to dig up part of our yard to place waterproofing against the foundation of our house thinking that was the issue with the leak. I am happy I stopped him as his assessment was wrong and he would agree that to be true as well. When I spoke to a lawyer about going after John in small claims court for the money that I spent to fix his mistake I was advised that because of John's refusal to accept the responsibility and his ridiculous demands to provide him with pictures from the area of the house that he did not touch yet was affected; it would have been a waste of my time. My opinion of John and his work stands firm and unwavering. Yelp is here to share our experiences with the community. I am glad others are very please with John and his work, but my experience with John and North Bay Construction was absolutely terrible and my wife and I continue to find issues that we have to fix. Our new floors continually squeak and pop, our light switches do not cover the cutout holes, our doors are not square, etc. It is work that was not diligently followed up with quality control which is part of John's role as project manager. I am also not convinced that John came to our site often so it was up to me to point out any issues. If I was away then it would not get fixed. Whether you hire North Bay Construction or not I only thought it is fair that you hear about my experience. read more
