Bikes you can use if you don't bring your own
    Julie Z.

This place has reopened. My 6 year old son went to a week long BMX camp (beginners in the morning & advanced in the afternoon). There's a ton of tables in the middle of everything so you can see every turn of the track. During camp they played music over the loud speakers so it made for a cool vibe. Donnie, the head instructor was absolutely fabulous with my son Justice as this was his first time on a track. He was so encouraging and at no time was he pushy. In fact everyone working there was great with the kids. They taught the kids to look out for each other especially when someone wiped out. I heard they've started a BMX racing team so I'll be looking into that soon.

Took my four year old here for the first time this past weekend and she loved it. Top notch track with a great community around it and a skatepark that allows bikes next door!

Really, join me! We'll make it work! We'll live on thistles and spring water, and we'll dance with the butterflies! Oh, never mind, we need beer money...but do check out this trail...I pretty much guarantee you'll love it. Here's my loop: West Blithedale trailhead, up Old Railroad Grade to West Point Inn, past the Inn to Old Stage Road trail, down to Pantoll campground, (through the parking lots) to Coastal View trail, ride Coastal View all the way to Highway 1. Then turn left, ride carefully on Hwy 1 to the Pelican Inn, and have your friend guard the bikes while you get a pot of tea to drink out on the lawn. Then lug your tired rear up Diaz Ridge trail back to Mill Valley and don't hate on me for getting you to a place that's downhill from where you want to be. Alternate plan: Get your friend's husband, who has a truck, to pick you up. Say yes to hitchhikers 'cause that might be you one day and you think you know them maybe a little. But I guess I should review the trail itself: Coastal View is absolutely magnificent. The word 'magnificent' is not an exaggeration, which I am prone to, but not in this case. Single track (but not the scary next-to-a-cliff-you-might-die type of single track) that progresses from wooded bits near Pantoll, to an exposed path, to a Disney-couldn't-design-a-trail-that-looks-this-good segment that winds through some low trees (duck! you might get wet if it's misty), then out to views of the coast (or the fog, depending on your luck). Go with a friend so you can keep saying, "Oh my gosh! This is great! And there's no one on the trail!"* Tons of wildflowers in the spring and great photo ops if you're into that--I am always so blissed out that I forget about photos. Bonus photo op at Muir Beach overlook right off of Highway 1. *OK, you may see a few others on Coastal View trail. On my most recent ride, we saw a single runner (that's it!) from Pantoll to Hwy 1. That said, don't rush it, savor it. Look out for bunnies. PS Yes, you could hike this, too, but I never have. I'm sure it's just as nice on foot. PPS the only place you might lose your way is just past Pantoll, but watch for the signs and I think it is clear.

They sell a kinda of curated goods from a small selection of tools, lubricants, snacks, and gear. I bought some very well fitted gloves there. What really impressed me was the way they operated the store. It got busy at one point and chilled out... then it got busy again, and they did not miss a beat! But on top of all of that, they were servicing bikes that had appointments or walked in, all at the same time! I was able to bring my bike in, but I also saw they had those bike repair racks in the front and back of the store - they're not playing around. I saw someone walk in with their bike listing off a bunch of stuff he wanted to look into fixing, and the staff person in the front immediately threw it on the repair rack and said 'let's take a look'. They also have this roller situation setup in the front where they can take your bike and run it in place to show what it does while in motion. This place means business and they are super friendly! I wish I had something like this closer to home, this store is doing a service to their local community.

Can't really hike this from the main road anymore, because they closed the parking area. So you have to drive to the back of the trail which is inside the hiddenbrooke community itself. Edit 6/12/2018: the trail is fairly overgrown and not maintained at this point. The trail is still hikeable, however you will be walking through tall dry grass and weeds for most of the trail. My legs got scratched up a bit. Spotted a snake wondering across the trail this time as well. Snakes are hard to see as the overgrowth obscures them fairly well. The first few hundred yards is cracked dry dirt that makes it easy to roll an ankle. I'm surprised this trail is this overgrown and not maintained given the money that is in that community. The trail is labeled at the trailhead. It is good for biking, horseback riding, and hiking. No dogs are allowed, however you will find nothing but dog shit on the main entryway for a good mile before it stops. The trail runs along some hills with constant incline and declines. However, it isn't all too difficult to hike. Half way through you will pass through a cattle walkway and enter the cow shit zone. There are patties everywhere. And you'll likely wander around some cows, but they scatter at first sight of you. The trail is clear for wearing shorts, however the ground isn't very flat as it is ravaged by cows on a daily basis.

There are some bushes that veer into the trail but it's not out of control, you can just work your way around it. Beware of dog poop, seems like no one picks up after their dog, EVER. It's a good trail to hike before work just as the sun is rising. It's short enough but still gives you a good cardio workout. I'll be back to finish the hike in it's entirety,

Currently you can ride from Napa to Yountville directly with other sections (not yet all connected) up towards Calistoga and down towards Vallejo. The eventual goal is to have it run the full distance. The section I did started in Kennedy Park in Napa. Ample, free parking and restrooms are a great way to start off. The trail is very well signed once you get going and it ran an interesting path through Napa wetlands, along the Napa River, and through a bit of an industrial area with some cool murals, to start. After a little bit you're riding parallel to the Napa Wine train tracks and highway 29. There is definitely a lot of street noise but the trail is very smooth in most spots and a nice ride. As you get closer to Yountville, views of the Valley open up and you're riding through oaks and views of vineyards on either side. There are maps and informational placards along the way as well as a few benches to rest. Once in Yountville, there are restrooms in Veterans Park and it's a nice spot to have a snack and turn around. That portion, round trip ended up being 22 miles. I'm excited for the path to extend from Yountville up to Calistoga. Definitely will be back. Really well kept trail and interesting scenery along the way.
