Lovely coffee shop just between Haymarket and West end. I believe this used to be a Starbucks *shudders* fair to say it's upgraded big time. large and airy but cosy at the same time. The staff were approachable and the service was quick. Good coffee and yummy desserts, I went for the pecan brownie which was soft and gooey on the inside, I did feel a bit sick by the end of it so it's probably more than enough between two. My friend got the fruit cup and a mango pineapple smoothie, top marks from him. They offer free cucumber infused water which is nice when you're dashing about sight seeing. Mixed crowd of professionals, people working on laptops and groups of friends. If I lived in Edinburgh I think I'd be a regular. read more

Let's call this: a hopeful three star. I've only been into Noir once for a brief 30-minute coffee meeting alongside Caz H, so this is very much a first impression review. The most striking thing about the place? It's HUGE! There seems to be at least two rooms off of the main one cafe with plenty of big windows for natural light and more than enough space that you'll easily find a quiet spot to work. So far, so good. As Mihali pointed out, the menu is limited, which for a coffee newbie is appreciated. However, on this go round, because i'm stuck with the sniffles, I opted for tea instead and that's where things delve into a "I don't know what to make of it yet" zone. The tea came with a timer and a tea pot, which is always a nice touch - a little fancier presentation than just a big ol' mug of tea. But when I dutifully waited for the timer to run out before pouring, I found my tea was only luke warm. The tea (the oolong) was a nice flavour, but it's really hard to be enthusiastic about luke warm tea. A few other tidbits to add to my hesitation - 1. they don't seem to have wifi (though I could very likely be mistaken on this... it's not easily found if anything), 2. they don't take Amex (which is common but always a bit of a disappointment) and 3. I also bought a tiny bottle of juice for £2. Now I don't mind paying for good juice... I don't bat an eye dropping £5 on something fresh, but £2 for a bottle that I can pick up at any shop for half that? That's a big mark up. The orange juice they have is tropicana and again, can be picked up at any store for much less. So i'm very much on the fence... it's rare to come across a space like this, especially for a gal who works from home and so I wanted to walk away enthusiastic. Instead, I left not unhappy but definitely a little puzzled. However, I have hopes that this newly opened spot will iron out the wrinkles and suspect that their cake selection will sway my rating on the next visit. read more

A new specialty coffee and patisserie café in the neighbourhood!!! How exciting!!! This place used to be a Starbucks for many many years, quite spacious, high ceiling, big windows. The new owners kept similar style: the baristas are located opposite the entrance as you enter, the chairs didn't look excitingly comfortable but the match nicely with the decoration. I've only tried a coffee so far: you can choose between two different roasts: Nicaragua and Ethiopia! They do and are unusual! The barista will elaborate on the particulars of each type, both a bit fruity, probably enhanced I would say, so be prepared for an unusual coffee when you order :-) Keep in mind that the price will not be regular obviously: £3.20 for a Mocha. The muffins and pastas do look very tempting. I didn't check if there's wifi but I'm positive it will be scheduled if nothing else. I didn't spot any cold sandwiches in the morning and the coffee menu was rather minimalistic, in a pleasant way compared to other cafés. Fun of a gourmet coffee or claim to be a sweet tooth? But delayed in reviewing but still remember enough to hopefully do it some justice. I'm hovering on the 3/4 border, maybe with another visit I'll tip one way or the other so am being conservative here. Venue: I really like this place, despite its cavernous interior keeping the place a little on the cooler side of comfortable (tip to management can you up the heating in winter please!). Fresh, clean lines, simple touches, fairly comfortable seating (but not the sort to make you want to spend hours holed up there). Tip #2 to management tho, add a self closer to the front door, the number of people who left it open was numerous, leaving the staff to run relays back and forth to shut it. Staff: fun, friendly and knowledgable. They appear to quite enough being there and are happy to have a chat and a laugh if free. Coffee: simple pick of 2 beans, with advisories available from staff if asked for it, this clean take I like! Served at a good temperature, my cappuccino came in a good sized, big enough to feel you weren't getting short changed, small enough to not be watered down or cold by the end. Foam topping seemed to have been rapidly steamed as large bubble structure which was surprising however the end result was a very good, smooth and rich coffee, a win in my book. Price: this is where my *s take a hit. I'm more than happy to pay higher prices for a great coffee but even £2.70+ is pushing it if want to stay for a while and have a few. Summary: great new offering on the Edinburgh coffee scene. I like what's been done with the place and with a few adjustments here and there it will make 4 in my book. Courteous staff, passionate about their wares and with good reason! Essentially, everything is to high standard. As for the coffee itself, the roast is always changing, with an appropriate roast used for different coffees. The staff are glad to inform you of the origin and tasting notes of the beans too. Seating: there are three areas to sit. The main cafe area, a back room and the quieter and more chilled out upstairs area. Comfy swing-seat included. Perfect! read more

Found this cute spot down the road from where I was staying and it became my go-to spot for tea/ hot white chocolate/ a quick sandwich or dessert. The staff is super friendly and helpful and everything is fresh and tastes house baked, not commercial. I appreciated the crusty baguette on the ham and cheese sandwich, not soft squidgy bread. The white hot chocolate is made with cinnamon and cardamom, reminiscent of chai, which is elusive in Edinburgh. While they do promote as a coffee spot, they do tea well also. read more

Look out! There is a new coffee shop on the blocks, called Noir. It's near Haymarket and easy accessible from any side you can imagine. You might even remember this place as a Starbucks once. For commuters from Haymarket certainly very ideal. Today it is redecorated, showing off a contemporary simple style with everything you need. This place is large, high ceilings and an upper floor. Toilets downstairs. You only get one cup size and they offer the usual ranges of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. I got myself a cappuccino and a Hot Chilli Chocolate. There is also Orange and Caramel & Lime and the original hot chocolate flavour for consumption. They also do pastries, baguettes and other little snacks. The pain de raisin was very nice, crunchy and tasty. At the moment the service still seems a bit uncoordinated as the waiter took his time until he got the order to the right place. It was a bit funny to watch him walking around the tables asking people, if they had ordered this. LOL. Everything is in perfect condition and the place is very clean. They could make it a bit cozier. But definitely a place to look out for! read more

We love the coffee in this new cafe. The coffee, decor and location is great for us as there aren't that many places like it in the West End at present. Unfortunately, the service and food selection is very poor. Only three types of sandwiches to choose from. The staff also appear unable to deal with more than one sandwich order at a time. This is critical to get right at lunch time - as you are serving mostly business people and not coffee shop-dwelling hipsters and students who don't mind if they wait 15 minutes for a sandwich that literally just had to be cut in half and put on a plate. Get this right and offer more to eat and you're on to a winner! read more

There are not enough great things I can say about this place. There is a main lounge area as well as upstairs seating. Also there is free wifi which is way more reliable than Starbucks. Trust me I've worked out of here a few days and some days wished it was my actual home office. So if you are in the area or need a quick break away from the day, come in and treat yourself to the relaxing ambiance and a soothing cappuccino. read more

I Was servied a Cold hot chocolate. brought it to counter be told that that is the way it supposed to be. Really?? Yes. in fact the barista told me that is serve that way so you can drink in "one shot." I asked them to heat it up and all they did was add hot water. Soooo, there I had an awful hot but very watery chocolate. poor experience. Last week my husband bought me an Americano from here. The beans must have been burned on roasting... the coffee was intolerable. read more

Nice place to sit, but don't think they know how to make a decent drink. I ordered a coffee with soya milk. It tasted and smelt rancid. The milk had been boiled several times beforehand, and it was all bobbly and brown. Didn't drink the coffee. I was the only person waiting for a hot drink, and it took the guy over 10 mins to make it. I want coffee to taste like coffee, but all these new places are messing around weighing things and pretending that they are scientists. You end up with a very expensive (£2.70) cup of yuck. Beautiful space. High quality coffee and pastries. We were delighted when this opened up in our neighbourhood. The problem: the staff have not been trained properly, if at all. I have tried it twice now as I live close by. The first time it took 15 minutes to get a coffee to take away, although there were at least 5 people behind the till none of whom smiled or acknowledged me. The milk was burnt and the flat white was not good. I thought maybe this was because it had only been opened a few weeks. The second time we sat and had a coffee and croissant. Both were very good, but again took more than 15 minutes and the place was practically empty. The poor staff looked really untrained and stressed. They apologised and did not charge us for our coffees. I have spoken to other neighbours who have had the same experience. Please get a good manager and train your staff. We would really like this place to succeed! read more
