Famous fudge donut, a strawberry tower, and a fresh strawberry pastry

We were in St Andrews on a day trip from Edinburgh. We live in the US. We were wanting a snack, and we stopped here because the items in the window were so tempting. We tried the chicken salad sandwich and three sweet treats. Everything was delicious, and the prices were reasonable. Actually delicious is an understatement. I ate the tower, and each layer was better than the previous one. Do not miss this place!

so yummy!!! You definitely need to stop here for your afternoon treat, i recommend getting a ton of different things and sharing them (grab two fudge donuts though;). Super cute interior with nice ladies. You will definitely be able to find something you like!

It's hard to know exactly how to start a review for an institution as legendary as Fisher and Donaldson. Having once lived in Fife, I have visited this bakery countless times. It is popular with tourists as well as locals (even though they are often hesitant to admit it). I even worked next door to the bakery for a while, and I have still yet to decide whether or not this was one of the best things ever or one of the most devastating... only because once you've had their fudge donuts or almost anything else for that matter, you will find yourself longing for it whenever you're away. If you ever find yourself walking past the bakery, you may end up with a broken neck as you will immediately whip your eyes back to the delicacies on display in their window. It really is a magical experience. And once inside, the staff, many of whom have worked there for years, are very friendly. They're patient with indecisive tourists as well as helpful with local regulars. For good reason, two of the most popular items are their fudge donut and their coffee tower. If you're American, it may be helpful to know that fudge donut is a custard donut with a toffee/caramel icing. Most people could possibly share one of these between two people. Or if you're on your own like I was yesterday, then they have begun making mini versions. Although, I must confess, I really do go for the large ones sometime without regret. The coffee tower is slightly less popular with slightly more calories. As coffee is possibly my least favourite thing to drink, I have occasionally had the slightly more accessible chocolate tower. I couldn't do it much justice with a description, but it's almost like a giant chocolate covered profiterole. I recommend trying almost anything really. They also have great strawberry tarts. And there are very few other places where you could get an excellent donut or pastry and walk five minutes and eat it inside the ruins of a Medieval cathedral. Ok... I could talk about this place all day, so I'll stop.

Chocolate cupcake, the very cupcake of the gods themselves.

Looking for a way to celebrate some flagrant tourism in the lovely town of St Andrews? Well, pop on down to Fisher & Donaldson and prepare your current diet to crumble to smoldering remnants of resolve faster than you can say "what's a coffee tower?!" Fisher & Donaldson was a must-stop on my list in St. Andrews for obvious reasons. For one, I am a self-admitted bakery fanatic. You just don't get many charm-your-pants-right-off, wholesome bakeries back in the sticks where I grew up. So for me, when I see a bakery my eyes glaze over. Not only that, but I stinkin' LOVE sweets. So after seeing the excellent reviews of F&D, my galpal and I made plans accordingly for our venture to St Andrews. F&D must be more popular than even I'd been led to believe, because as my friend and I meandered inside we were greeted with the sight of a guy slow-panning his gigantic video camera down the window of decadent offerings. It was a bit awkward working around him, although now our two takeaway coffee towers now live on in infamy somewhere on film being carefully selected by staff. I do find that tickles my fancy a wee bit! I'd say my only beef with F&D after visiting is just how many damned things there are to choose from. How could any one person choose in under and hour?! Nevertheless, my friend and I made our selections with a bit of guidance from the helpful and very dapperly dressed staff (all the while navigating around our filmmaker friend) and settled onto a park bench nearby to engulf our goodies. Five stars all around for my GOBBY-GOOEY-OMGMYWAISTLINE chocolate cupcake, and five stars again for the coffee tower that I shared with the hubs later. I haven't had many in my time for comparison, but the coffee tower does remind me a bit of a gigantic profiterole, and by that I mean: sheer glory in baked form. All in all, F&D is a must if you're stopping in to St Andrews! If you value things like happiness and sunshine and rainbows and chocolate, yeah. You owe it to yourself.

These are the strawberry tarts and coffee creme towers!

Love this place. Would shop here every day if I had the budget. For now it remains a special occasion shop for me.

We walked in and were greeted by a wonderful display of baked goods for our choosing. I immediately knew what I was getting after seeing the case of empire biscuits or what they called Belgian biscuits. My mom went for a gingerbread man cookie and the boyfriend went for a fruit slice with lemon frosting. My biscuit was delicious as empire biscuits almost always are, but my mom wasn't a fan of her rather hard gingerbread man cookie. She said it was really hard to bite in to it was so hard, and didn't eat much of it. I tried the fruit slice, and it was interesting. The boyfriend mentioned it's much better with vanilla frosting, the lemon frosting didn't do much for it. There were loads of things to purchase, including whole cakes and savoury goods. Also, some weird 24 bakery machine, which I was curious about but didn't try out. I'd be in trouble if that machine was anywhere near where I live. Thankfully it's here, in St. Andrews. I might be tempted to stop here again if in the area, but if there's another local bakery, I would definitely check them out to see how they differ.

However, perhaps that is because, although the products are pretty much the same as the others, the staff seem to be less friendly and despite trying avidly to interact and create some form of community spirit, they do not seem interested, and often seem rather bored and lack lustre. However, the quality of their cakes and pastries and breads more than makes up for it, and their fudge doughnuts can only be eaten to be believed. They have a lovely window display during festive holidays so worth visiting maybe then.

If the weather is suitable enough, I recommend taking your drink to have down by the harbour or the cathedral or even on the quad by St Salvator's Chapel. This is St Andrews, darling, and this is Starbucks. One might hope it would be a nicer Starbucks, and, to be fair, they have made improvements over the last few years to the interior. It's one of the smallest starbucks I've been inside, but it's always buzzing with people. The way they've remodelled the seating has made it more suitable for a student town with more bar-style seating (great for sitting at with your laptop) rather than just tables (which always made the place WAY to crowded). Despite valiant efforts for quality independent coffee shops, nothing has lasted, so why not stop at Starbucks or another chain if you're in town?
