You offer a wide range of fresh produce, stocked shelves, and generally reasonable lines (caveat: I go off-peak, though at a wide range of off-peak times) - all at comparatively reasonable prices. Getting those basic parts of the business model right is better than any frill I can think of. For me, five stars means that I would be genuinely upset to see a place go out of business or change ownership, and that's 100% the case here. read more

Although it's very conveniently located at the end of my street, Freddie's No Frills just happens to be the worst grocery store I have ever visited. No matter what time of day you go, there are always line ups. I've often dropped in for one item and had to wait 10-15 minutes to checkout. The "1-8 Items" line is often abused by people exceeding the 8 item limit by many items. It is not policed in any way by the staff. Freddie's also runs out of groceries a lot! The fresh produce section is a joke. How can you run out of cucumbers by 11am on a Saturday morning? There have been no frozen french fries of any type for over a week on multiple occasions now. Heck, they even run out of staple items like Tropicana orange juice, coffee cream and cheese on a Saturday morning! These are not just one offs - They seriously run out off stuff all the time. It kind of defeats the purpose of going grocery shopping at Freddie's No Frills if you have to end up going to another grocery store to finish your shopping. The shelves are re-stocked during the day, so the aisles get blocked with skids of produce waiting to put away. It makes for a very uncomfortable experience in the aisles. In the year and a half I've been going to Freddie's, I've never seen a manager! Freddie is none existent! That just confirms to me that he really doesn't care about his customers. There's an obvious morale problem at this store and I think it's caused by the management. Freddie's No Frills needs a major shake up. The owner and management need to get a better grip and start ordering stock properly so they don't run out of produce on Saturday mornings. The shelves need to be stocked at quieter times of the day and the staff need to start caring about their customers. read more

This No Frills is on my way home from work ... plus there's a liquor store next door. I stopped in yesterday for the first time on my way home from work. It looks like a big store but it's actually a small crappy store. There's not a lot of choice. The workers were stocking shelves when I was there. There were stocking carts in the way and the workers were quite abrasive (obviously no customer service training). The lack of signs made me wonder what the cost of things were. I won't be back. The one at Lansdowne/Dundas is so much better. read more

It's a great store. The workers are kind and helpful. The recent renovation have maximized available space in the aisles and expanded variety of products. These changes will ensure that this business thrives as the community changes. Closing at 9pm i arrived twenty to 9 for a quick ingredient grab. And nearly everyone from the neighbourhood was there doing the same. At least 80 people in line. Thankfully three of the tills were open and got me through for the purchase of only two articles in about 20 minutes. There's a decent selection of veggies and meat, as well as all the other staples you need. It's got the basics. Yelp should change this because this is now another Luciano's NF. The other one is on Parliament. The shelves are always stocked, in fact it is hard to negotiate around the aisles because of stock flats. The produce department is better than that at our Loblaws. The lines are long sometimes but the staff seems happy and is much more helpful than in the past. The product range is ethnically diverse and goes from Ace Bakery products to local bakery bread, warm if one shops early. Also, they are price matching to the big chains so it is worth comparison shopping. A loonie for a cart is steep and more attention should be paid to keeping them clean and undercover near the store. read more

It would be wrong to compare any No Frills to the average Loblaws (or Sobeys). They just don't play in the same league. That said, Freddie's No Frills barely lives up to the many other crappy No Frills locations. Joe's No Frills (at the Dufferin Mall) is much better - cleaner, brighter, better selection and often cheaper to boot! How does that make sense? Freddie's is just plain bad. Bad selection. Poor cleanliness. Surly staff. Surly clientele (can you blame us?). Terrible produce. And anyway, Freddie's pic makes him look like a gangster. As many say, we go for the convenience, not the shopping experience. Our hope is that as the Wychwood area of St. Clair keeps getting better and better, those of us in the neighbourhood will get a little competition to choose from. Would it kill you, Freddie, to renovate the store so you can still compete when a new guy inevitably moves in nearby? How does Loblaws let you get away with running such a dingy place? Patrons who want a more inexpensive option than the Loblaw's down the street at St. Clair and Bathurst come here. But you "pay" for it in other ways. The store usually lacks cleanliness and there are item in-stock issues especially for the flyer items that lure you into the store in the first place. There are a whole bunch of missing prices tags throughout the store as well. If you are willing to overlook these issues and it is a convenient location for you, it will get the job done and most likely on budget. Just don't expect it to have gourmet items such as international cheeses or premium services like a deli counter (like the Loblaw's down the street). read more

Coming from the Caribbean this no frills actually reminds me of the larger Supermarkets back home. The layout and navigation is simple and straight forward. You would not find as much variety here as you would in the more upscale groceries, their organic selection is limited, but still there is quite a bit being offered with many cheaper alternatives and no name brands for those looking to save a buck. The produce offering (fruit, veggies, herbs etc) beat my expectations for such a store and I found this and the meat to be noticably well priced. However, some non-food items and snacks I found to be priced at or higher than other groceries, though I will note that there were cheaper brand alternatives available. When I visited the store there were 2 cashiers and 1 express Lane open. I have experienced this at Metro as well, however, at no frills it seems people are coming to purchase larger amounts of groceries which take longer Check out times. The cashier was quick and friendly. Also there were people working in the aisles, but again, this same thing happens at other groceries and asking them nicely to allow you space never hurt anyone. read more

This is my preferred grocery store even though it's twice as far away from where I live as the St. Clair/Bathurst Loblaw's. It has most of what I need and I don't mind going elsewhere for a few other items that Freddie's doesn't stock. Shopping is quicker because the store is a modest size. Sometimes it's busy and I have to wait 5-10 min. in line to check out, but that is the case at any grocery store in this area. Yes, they stock during the daytime - that's okay with me because that's part of how they keep the prices low. Plus the aisles are big enough to accommodate the employees working and a shopping cart, so I can always get through. I don't really understand other reviewers who seem to want it all - low prices (that's why we're here, isn't it?) PLUS tons of selection, produce section always 100% stocked, and Pollyanna-ish cashiers and other staff. I usually get a friendly greeting when I check out. What more do people want? I'm certainly not expecting to be treated like royalty. I'm just there to get my groceries! A few days ago I accidentally left my wallet behind on the conveyor belt when checking out as I'd come by bicycle and not by car - different bagging system, therefore room for error. The next morning I went back in a panic but they had kept it there for me safe and sound, and all my cards and cash were still there. What a relief! This is the closest grocery store to my house so I go here frequently. It's almost always dirty. The stock guys are ALWAYS in the way. ALWAYS. I've never seen a cashier smile and they ALWAYS talk over their shoulders to the cashier behind them while they are ringing in your things. ALWAYS. The other thing you can be sure of is that they will ALWAYS be out of whichever pasta is on sale that week. ALWAYS. This place could be easily improved. Sweep sometimes. Give your employees a few hours of customer service training. If you know a product is popular with your customers order more. Problems fixed. I was looking for a review of a burrito place on St. Clair when I noticed that there were reviews of Freddy's No Frills and thought "who the heck reviews a No Frills on Yelp?" Well, I'm glad I clicked on this. It was a good laugh because the reviews here are spot-on. They cover all the bases, except one -- this store will have the weirdest stuff in stock but will lack the most usual staples. It's a shopping experience akin to doing your groceries in Communist Hungary. For example, they'll have an extensive selection of tripe, but won't have homogenized milk. They'll have six different sizes of frozen shrimp and the weirdest no-brand frozen steaks, but they'll have no chicken breast (fresh or frozen) and for flour the only thing they'll have in the store is ten-pounds bags of no-name whole-wheat. They'll have kumquats in the fruit section but will carry only one variety of apple. Sometimes there are three brands of unflavoured gelatin and mupltiple varieties Italian sodas but only two flavours of cake mix. Other times they'll have nine flavours of cake mix but no diet coke and no maple syrup. It is the weirdest grocery store I've every frequented. PS - To add: I have seen Master T of MuchMusic VJ fame here on a few occasions. So this review should be closer to 2.5. PSS - Oh, and they carry the Pride of Pennsylvania, Herr's Potato Chips, all year round. So maybe this should be a 2.75 out of 5. If this store wasn't so close to my house, I'd avoid it like the plague. The manager, a loud women with glasses is constantly bellowing at her staff from across the store. Seemingly about things that could be said in an inside voice or at a closer range and more privately for the customer's benefit. No wonder most of the cashiers seem grumpy, with someone yelling at you all day, I can understand how they might be a little down. Also, they have more cashiers during the day than at the 4 to 6 after work rush, so there's always a huge line. Personally, I would think the opposite scheduling would be the smart thing to do. They have virtually no gluten free foods, and a pretty hit or miss selection. Plus side: they are still pretty cheap in comparison to other places, not always, but pretty good. read more

I only go to Freddie's No Frills for convenience. Basically to pick up milk and bread. I hate going there. There are very few healthy choices in the store. No organic fruit, very few choices of healthy bread, surly and smelly stock boys. The customer service training is THE WORST! Everytime I go, and I mean every time, the attitude presented by the cashiers is abhorrent. No eye contact, no smile, texting on their phones, cracking gum and more often then not, rude, rude, rude. I can stick up for myself and have, but there is a huge senior, immigrant, marginalized population that visit the store and for the most part, I'm sure they endure the meanness from the cashiers. I was treated so bad by one cashier once, I contacted head office. The head office had the cashier supervisor telephone me - she was just as bad. Sigh... Firstly, No Frills is a discount grocery store whose main goal is to provide lowest prices for grocery staples, so don't go there expecting to find huge selection or high-end luxury items. Nor is it a store to leisurely peruse the international cheese section while sipping on the latte you bought inside. There's a reason it's called "No Frills" - all the pretentious extras that you find in, for example, the Loblaws down the street are absent and you're left with plain aisles and displays, and all the staples for your average household kitchen sold for substantially less than the same items at that same Loblaws I already mentioned. And I must say, I find the produce items to be of better quality and substantially cheaper than said Loblaws. (I mention Loblaws so much because I actually live closer to it and thus do run in at times but mostly I will go to the further No Frills). Examples: I will not buy heads of lettuce from Loblaws because it's hard to find what isn't wilted, and it's also more expensive; lemons sell at Loblaws for a dollar and change, whereas at No Frills the same lemons sell 2 for a dollar. Other reviewers' complaints about the long lines, cumbersome and/or unhappy staff, mystery pricing, and frequency of certain items being out of stock are legit; HOWEVER, the exact same things can be said of Loblaws. And in the case of out-of-stock items this makes sense seeing as No Frills is actually owned by the same people as Loblaws so their supply chains are the same, and it is usually the case that if No Frills is out of it, so is Loblaws. Now it's true, I don't buy certain things like meat from No Frills because No Frills simply doesn't carry much if any hormone and antibiotic-free stuff (this would be considered a luxury item I suppose, and thus not surprising that it's not at No Frills). But they do carry organic milk and eggs, and a surprising selection of things like different types of rice and yes, even some international cheeses (although not as much as Loblaws). Simply put, No Frills is the best place to buy produce and staples like milk, grains, bread, canned and frozen goods. Shop elsewhere if you are looking for fancy meats and cheeses, unusual ingredients, or if you simply want to choose from a huge variety of one thing rather than have to choose between just one or two brands of that thing. No. Frills. Just what you need (*most* of the time). I'd rather wait in line at No Frills and pay a third less than wait just as long in line at Loblaws and pay more. If you want a real 5 star grocery chain that truly has a great selection at reasonable prices, treats its employees well in such a way that customers can tell, and has mastered the rudimentary art of cashing people out in a fast and efficient manner, go to Wegmans in Western New York (sigh, I miss Wegmans). read more
