It's only a take-out joint; it looked a bit iffy, but I know and was hoping that looks can be deceiving, so I ate in my car - not my favorite thing, especially in the cold, but I always try to change my scenery during my lunch break. (I truly think it's healthy and makes for better productivity). The shopping strip is so tiny that you can blink and miss it! I'm such a creature of habit - had my go-to of shrimp w lobster sauce. It was pretty darn good. I've had better, but it WAS good! I appreciated that there weren't ANY vegetables in this version. It was a nice thick'ish consistency, and I loved their perfect rice. It was a regular Wednesday night when I decided to treat myself to some takeout. I'd heard good things about No. 1 Chinese Kitchen -- the reviews said things like "best dumplings in town" and "crispy beef changed my life." Seemed promising enough. As I walked in, the place was empty except for a man behind the counter. He looked up from his phone slowly, like I had just disturbed a very intense level of Candy Crush. "Uh... hi," I said. "Can I get an order of General Tso's chicken and--" Before I could finish, the man raised a hand. "You! I know you!" I blinked. "What? I've never been here before." He narrowed his eyes. "You left bad Yelp review. One star. Said 'spring roll like wet sock.'" I laughed nervously. "No, I think you've got the wrong--" Before I could protest further, the man reached under the counter and pulled out... a pair of extra-long chopsticks. Industrial-grade. Polished like they were used for ceremonial dragon-slaying. "Today, you learn respect!" he shouted. I turned to run, but I slipped on a soy sauce packet someone had dropped by the entrance. The lady always forgets to pack at least one item. However, she never forgets to charge you for it ! Check your order twice before paying, you will most likely never get everything you ordered! This place is less than 5 minutes away from the apartment complex some of my friends live in. Due to convenience, whenever we're craving for Chinese but don't feel like driving too far we order our takeout from here. The taste is fine, no complains there but everything else is messed up! Its not a restaurant, its literally a kitchen (with a questionable hygiene) with a counter where they ring you up. The lady owner is a crook!! She literally always effs up our order, there is at least one item always missing and we have to go back to get them. Once we were even overcharged. SO check your takeout bag before leaving and make sure you're getting everything they're charging you for! The portion size has significantly dropped in the past year or so. Example, If you order a Kung Pao Chicken, there is very little chicken pieces and a whole lot of veggies. I order from this place so much that I don't even look at the menu anymore when I call for takeout. I've even memorized their coupons. The best thing about this place is how consistent they are with everything. Menu items that are delicious each time I order are the sweet and sour pork, vegetable lo mein, pork fried rice, fried chicken wings, general tso, and wonton soup. Actually I'd like to place a special emphasis on the sweet and sour pork. I consider myself to be a bit of a sweet and sour pork expert because I've eaten a lot of goddamn sweet and sour pork over the years and this place takes the cake. Sauce is delicious and the crunch of the batter on the pork is something that every other Chinese restaurant around this area has really failed to accomplish. On the other hand they also do a consistently mediocre job on their garlic chicken, so steer clear of that. I purchased happy family and dumplings this was by far the worst food I have ever had the chicken and beef was like shredded rubber the crab was imitation and tasted like rolled corn starch pressed into pencil shaped objects very bland very little flavor. A nice take out place, good price, lotta food. The food is way too much for me to finish it by myself. I ordered beef with broccoli and it has more beef than the broccoli! It also come with pork fried rice, or I should said, "golden" pork fried rice. Yes, the rice is in gold color, which is the lost art of how the Chinese fried rice suppose to be cooked. Very mediocre food quality and taste. Not too bad, but not great either. Quick service. I was a little concerned with hygiene, but did not get sick from eating take-out from this restaurant. The food tasted like there was something missing, but couldn't quite point out what. Just a little less flavor than other Chinese restaurants. I used yelp's member reviews as a "Guide " for YEARS . I shun from writing bad reviews but I have made a few poor choices base on the star system. This was a 50/50 choice. I'm traveling for work in NJ so was in need of a quick late night delivery. It was probably one of the worst take out food. My fried appetizers were all burnt. I threw it all away... My rice was dried. I did get a good amount of shrimp in my lo mien but there was no flavor ...by that i mean it has salt taste but no flavor . the people are really nice and friendly but the cook may need some training. Burnt fried food is just not paying attention to what you are doing... unless the oil was absolutely dirty.. then it has to be change. read more
