The only reason I'm giving a 4-star rating is because of the great customer service representatives…read morewhich I've been dealing with on a regular basis. Why? Because Amtrak has changed my reservation three times in three months. I booked my trip to Boston early because it was July 3rd and America's 250th so I figured the train may be crowded. Since then, I keep getting canceled trains and car reassignments. I don't understand why as these are trains that run daily. Additionally, the emails give me a link to use in the app if I would like view the changes or make other changes. The links never work! Hence, my ongoing communication with customer service. I found out this last time that I can't access the app until the changes are confirmed. Isn't that the point of the link in the email? At this point I'm ready to book a refundable backup airline reservation as I'm getting leery that Amtrak may just cancel everything at the last minute.

It connects over 500 destinations, including big cities like Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and more. One time I thought I wanted to arrive in NYC by train from Miami Florida. It's the old romantic movies I had seen creating visions of glamour and excitement as you are welcomed in Penn Station. Even though I was being met by my daughter I anticipated the glamour of arrival. I also remembered my train ride from Florida to New York with my Mother when I was little. I had so much fun and my mother had motion sickness the whole way! As I should have known a trip of that length would be uncomfortable unless you had a sleeping car. The train was crowded too because I decided to attempt this in July. All the kids were out of school and going to theme parks. The bathroom became filthy in time and the children impatient with the ride. The parents impatient with the children. I sat with my headphones music blasting and looked out the window during daylight hours. The experience was miserable on the return trip also because I cried all the way back to Florida. I had plenty of time during that train ride to make a decision and a plan to move back to NYC. The experience is not one I want to repeat. We were held up in Florida by railroad crossings during Florida tropical downpours. In Washington D.C. we were held up by train problems and train traffic trying to get in and out. When I finally arrived my daughter greeted me with a look of chagrin because she couldn't find me. This was pre cell phones. By the time I arrived I was traveling a full 24 hours at least. From then on I took a plane! I'm not saying I wouldn't try one of their travel packages for a short excursion. I do think car travel is still my favorite!

Whether it's safe these days at certain hours I'm not sure. I know I wasn't fond of traveling to Port Chester alone at times in my life. I remember the times I needed a cab. Finding a cab was hit or miss. Incoming trains are not on the side where you can easily enter the Station Building. You walk down the long flight of stairs to a back street. Frequently my family would be waiting outside the station to pick me up. Sometimes they were late! I've never seen the inside of the station dirty. I always found it deserted. I didn't travel during peak hours. On my return trips to Manhattan I go outside and wait patiently for the train. I'm always afraid I'll miss it if I wait inside. I sure don't want to be stuck there waiting for the next train! When my Cousin Jim was alive we would sit in the car and talk. When we saw the train coming I'd head upstairs to the track. He'd wait to see I boarded safely. That memory makes me sad. It was nice to be cared for by a Cousin/Brother. Since he died I don't go back to Port Chester much. When I do my daughter usually goes with me. Thanks for letting me share my memories. And thanks Bill for posting. Seeing your recent post revived my history using this old Railroad Station!

He was blind. I was always amazed on how he was able to give people the exact change. Today the shop no longer exists. It is now a Restaraunt that is only open in the spring and summer time. This location gets commuters from Greenwich, rye and Port Chester. I can see a Starbucks here making a killing.

You can board at either station and travel to the next with peaceful views of the Hunterdon County countryside. Dogs are allowed on the "Black River Limited" rides. The roundtrip ride is about 30 minutes one-way with a 20 minute stop where you can disembark and take a look around, then 30 minutes back. The train runs rain or shine and it was a bit rainy during our excursion and didn't impact the enjoyment. There is no air conditioning and the windows are open to get air in the summer. The Ringoes station has a cute gift shop and some photo opportunities with an old caboose. (There is also a museum, but it is temporarily closed for renovations.). Thank you to their employee, Diana, for inviting us to participate in this unique experience. And, thank you to Maddielyne, a member of the train crew for chatting with us about Brie and sharing the history of the train and the area. Thankfully there were some really nice people that were willing to help out a little and show me the ropes, from parking to getting the tickets. The help they provided was 5+ stars. Parking: Kind of a problem, everything is parking permit only. I was told that after 5:00 they rarely check for permits and 'you should' be ok. Worst case you get a parking ticket, not towed. I really didn't have time to stress about it, so I went with it. Thankfully they were right and I didn't get a ticket. When you are here you have to cross to the other side of the track to purchase your ticket. The train was really close to running on time and only had to wait a couple minutes. 40 - 45 minutes ride to get in to Grand Central including all the stops along the way for pick ups and drop offs. Last train back runs pretty late out of the city. The one I caught was at 11:30, but they had at least two more trains after mine with the latest somewhere between 12:30 and 1:00 am. Overall price and experience isn't bad. Primarily, I wish that they had parking that wasn't permit only. They may have, I just wasn't able to find it.

Original signs, advertisements, lighting systems, fans, ventilation are all displayed and completely functional. The car was getting hot, so, the fans turned on!
