The hubs had a massive sushi craving on Saturday night, so I went and searched for a place to try. Since I've tried so many DT ones, we wanted to venture out and expand our horizons. A restaurant that has been around 10+ years? This restaurant looked promising. We took up the offer of 10% off for pick-up orders over $25. We mulled over the online menu and made the call at 7:29pm. We were told the order will be ready in 25 mins.
Ambiance: The restaurant looks like a home on the outside. Inside is clean and spacious, with 3 comfy lounger sofas (and a fish tank) for the waiting area. Decor is quite minimal.
Pick-up process: The pick-up process was quite fast. Our order was ready for us by the time we arrived. The hubs dropped his name and our order was handed over (yes, they accept credit cards).
The spread: we debated, contemplated and finally shortlisted to order chicken yakisoba, chopped scallop roll, salmon sashimi, and rainbow roll. As we opened our goodies when we got home, we noticed 3 complimentary things: a full order roll on the house, sliced up oranges (like how our mamas cut them), and a miso soup.
Taste: this is the part that got us. We found that the rolls and the yakisoba were a bit lacking in flavours, but other than that it was great! The rolls all came in purple-ish rice (not sure what kind of rice this is...)
- The rainbow roll was not how we imagined it and it had a lot more rice than we wanted.
- The yakisoba didn't have the tangy flavours of other yakisobas we had. The chicken and noodles were a bit overcooked.
- The salmon sashimi was fresh and juicy.
- The chopped scallop roll had the chopped scallop on top and a california roll on the bottom. The chopped scallops were nice, and tasty.
- The roll on the house was basically a fried california roll. It's good, but anything fried tastes good.
-For some reason, the wasabi tastes sweet (did they add sugar in there?)
-Miso soup tastes good. It was not too salty.
Portion: Really good. The rice:ingredients ratio could be better. The rainbow roll has a lot of rice, rendering the ingredients small in comparison. Yakisoba had a good ingredients:noodle ratio (ie, I didn't feel like I was only eating noodles). We received two small cubes of tofu in the miso soup. I didn't see any seaweed. The complimentary things that we received was certainly a very nice touch.
Price: For Kamloops, this place is really not bad at all. It is too bad it is far without a car from DT area.
Overall: taste was 3/5, portion 5/5, price 5/5. Overall, we give it 4.5/5. With the special touches from the restaurant (even though we are only take-out customers), we bumped it up to 5/5, and will likely come back again. read more
