There is often live music so it's a fun place to go and grab a drink and hang out. They have their own cider on tap, of course, but also a list of NY beers and mixed drinks to choose from. I was aware of, and had previously had, their ciders so I was especially interested in the mixed drinks menu on this visit. The drinks are creative - using Nine Pin cider plus local spirits. If I lived even remotely close to Albany and not hours away, this would be my jam. Absolutely loved it here! You don't normally find cider breweries and this place had it all - eclectic spot to sit, tons of merchandise, and most importantly, a vast amount of ciders to pick from. I had just tried one of their ciders a few blocks up the street at Parish and had been Googling where to buy it when this came up. It's in an interesting area that appears to have several breweries along the block. Staff was great and they explained the different ciders and how they were made. I went with an apple pie secco flavor that was amazing. Seriously. Best cider ever. And, boy was it powerful. After one down the street followed by one at Nine Pin Cider I was pretty happy. We also tried the pink lady apple rose style and it was so good. We ended up purchasing a couple pieces of clothing, apple gin (wow!) and some apple pie ciders to go and had to stop ourselives from ordering more (long ride home!) and taking more home. I'm going to make it a point to stop here next time I'm even an hour out - it was that good. This was my first time visiting the tasting room, and it was a great experience. There is a decent amount of space; even though it was pretty busy, we were able to get a seat at a table. There are 9 different ciders on tap, as well as 9 beers for those who aren't fans of cider. You can get flights of 4 for $7 or 9 for $15 which I think is a great deal. I tried the ginger, Belgian, rosé, and the new agave lime ciders, and they were all delicious. They also had a nice stout for my boyfriend, which he really liked. Most of their ciders are available for purchase in cans or bottles, and they offer a bunch of Nine Pin swag for purchase as well! Overall, it had a great atmosphere and I definitely plan on going back. They have board games for use, so going back for some cider and games is definitely in my future! What can I say, I am a huge fan of ciders. I can't help it when they are as delicious as the ones offered here at Nine Pin Cider. My first time here was for my best friend's surprise birthday party. We got a large table in the front room and the staff were so great with us. We were able to order a few cocktails while we waited for her to arrive. The hot cider is particularly delicious. Once we got to surprise the crap out of my friend, we settled in with cheese boards galore and a few sampler trays. My friend and I split one of the 9 choice samplers. We tried them all but the raspberry and blueberry. They were hugely varied overall. Some were crisp and dry (more my speed) while others had a sweeter profile. I was very interested in the earl grey since it is one of my favorite teas. The party went over swimmingly. They had a band in the main room which was great to help entertain/tucker out the wee ones that were with us. I had such a wonderful time and it was a great space for our party of 18! read more

I came here with my wife recently for a production tour. I like supporting local businesses. We had a lot of fun going in the back rooms and seeing the huge stainless steel brewing tanks, the large plastic vats, the pumps, tubes, etc. It is remarkable that they fill each glass bottle by hand, and label every bottle and most cans also by hand. They have machines to help them, but still it is a lot of work. There are lots of varities of hard cider. Admittedly, I prefer my drinks a little sweeter than most (amateur!) but they still have some types that I enjoy. If you really want to get to know their offerings, try one of their flights of ciders or join their special promotional clubs. They also have special tasting parties and other such events. This is a fun little spot to check out even if you think you don't like cider! Before coming here, I honestly thought cider was too sweet and I just wasn't in to it. The staff here helped me pick out some samples of cider that was more on the dry side and I really enjoyed the majority of them. You can purchase cider by the pint (around $7) or a 4 sampler ($7) or a 9 sampler ($15). I tried cider with ginger, strawberry, maple syrup, etc. The flavor combinations were pretty impressive. I really really wanted to like Nine Pin. And, thought overall it was a pleasant experience. The ambience is great; nicely laid out, cool vibe. They could perhaps dial down the music a notch to facilitate comfortable conversation. Nice outside seating as well. Great appointments; colors, furniture, etc. Ample parking. Hip neighborhood (nice to have Nipper visible and close by.) The cider was okay, I expected it to wow me/oddly that you buy in the supermarket tastes better. It would be much better at the tasting room if it was cold. I expected different vintages but it seems that it's all the same cider with different flavorings added. My son seemed to like the beer he'd selected. Okay pub grub, but again, adequate, not great. The service leaves a lot to be desired/perhaps it was just the server. I shared it was our first visit and we needed some suggestions/the server seemed unimpressed and we had to extract information. We bought two sampler flights of nine pours; they give you clever apple trays that hold them. However, while being given suggested tips when you pay when ordering (15%; 20%; 25%) which guilt you into a tip as the person taking your order is staring at you, you carry your own trays to a table and then when the beeper goes off telling you that your food is ready you come to collect it instead of it being brought to you (isn't that what a gratuity is for?) I needed to inquire about the offerings and the attendant wasn't very forthcoming with information (for example, we didn't realize the plantains and beans would be in an empanada, which we were actually pleased by and might have ordered two. Another item ended up being an empanada as well, though the menu board didn't make that evident.) We also then were apparently expected to bus ourselves afterwards (think college dining hall.) I didn't necessarily mind that but, again, then you question what you are tipping for, especially since you aren't about to tip less than 20% before your food is ready. Also, we were well into the cider (note, nice pours) when the food beeper indicated it was done...and the place wasn't packed. Again, not egregious by any means, but you don't get the feeling they particularly care that you're a customer. Relative to the food, the pretzels were pretty bad (soft doughy sticks that are over buttered and over salted.) The empanadas weren't terrific either. A nice novelty stop when you have out of town company; as a local I can't say I'd go back otherwise. read more

It just makes sense to have a cidery in Albany. We're surrounded by apple orchards, and we can't eat all those apples. So let's crush and ferment them to transform nature's bounty into an effervescent and refreshing beverage with a kick. What's fascinating about hard cider is all of the directions in which it can go. There are stylistic preferences from all around the world. Frankly, I'm partial to the deeply funky farmhouse ciders from France. But the zippy Germanic style ciders are a new found favorite. Nine Pin goes a different direction, and produces ciders in a wide variety of flavors. Some of these are better than others. And some flavors just require the right accompaniments to make them sing. For example, the Belgian cider is fantastic with malpeque oysters. But my favorite is the ginger. It's intense. But that deep warm glow from the ginger really makes it more of a fall or winter kind of cider. The raspberry was my favorite for summer, but now that's gone. Tonight I tried the peach, and it's quite good. Not all the fruit flavors are created equal. I haven't found the blueberry to deliver the same full fruit experience as the others. But I have to give Nine Pin credit for trying and being a bit experimental. I never would have thought a Yerba Mate cider would be good, but the herbaceousness of it played nicely off the fruity apples. Probably the best thing to do as a neophyte is to get down here and try a sampling of all seven that are offered on tap, to form your own opinions. And then you can drink what you like. I recently had the opportunity to sip and chat here with Rob S., the current Duke of Nine Pin in terms of check-ins (yet strangely, his review has disappeared). My overall experience was very enjoyable, and I learned a few things from Rob. He had come in specifically to try one of their newer ciders, and he wasn't overwhelmed. He also said the taste of specific ciders can vary from time to time because new batches. None of this deterred me, as it was my first time here, and I enjoyed the entire experience. For this visit, I opted for the flight of 4 for $7. I got their signature cider, the Belgian, the Peach, and the Pear. Of these, the one which impressed me the least was Peach, but only because i felt the peach presence could have been stronger. The other 3 I would definitely buy. Visiting Albany from NJ and decided to check out this place. I saw they had a booth at an outdoor concert but couldn't stop at the time. Had no idea they served food. Had the 4 flight - Bartlett Pear, Rosé, Peach Tea, Crimson Honey. LOOOVED all of them (Bartlett Pear was my fav and got a 12oz as well) We had the 3'cheese Garlic pizza (sorry no pic). It's baked on a SOURDOUGH crust which was sooo thin it was like a cracker on the end crust. Loved that except just a smidge greasy - but there was a lot of cheese so that's somewhat expected. Have to give Nine Pin five stars. Have to. This will end up being one of my shorter reviews because there isn't much to say. The bottom line is that Nine Pin is a stand alone. An innovator. The first of its kind. Like Duke Ellington or Thomas Edison. The region is lucky to have this as an option. They use local apples to produce a wide array of hard cider. Not the garbage cider sold in the grocery store. Crisp, refreshing hard cider that makes you happy and keeps you wanting more. They have lots of infusions but the original cider does the job. Recently I tried a cider made with "experimental" apples. It was outstanding. They also have a small food menu and cider belly doughnuts available at the counter. The tasting room is awesome and they have a "bring your dog" policy. I always see loveable pooches when I visit. They have also recently added a private room if you want to have a small gathering. If you need a break from beer, wine and whiskey Nine Pin is a revelation. I predict it will become a mandatory stop in the Capital Region for those visiting the area or making a quick stop off the NYS thruway. read more

Cool space, cool merch, and DELICIOUS cider. Not all Nine Pin is created equal, I tend to stay away from the ginger and the blueberry, but the flavors I love, I REALLY love. Last summer I drank the Peach Tea cider like it was my job, but this winter the Earl Grey has been on constant rotation in my fridge. I recently had the chance to try their limited reserve Raspberry and was definitely not disappointed. If you're not as into the tea and fruit as I apparently am, Nine Pin has plenty of other flavors, some of my other notables are the Belgian, Crimson Crab, and of course the Signature. I love that Nine Pin is able to create such deep flavors while always maintaining a light crisp mouthfeel. Highly recommend stopping by the tasting room, getting the flight of 9 samplers, and then leaving with some cans (or bottles) of your favorites! Full disclosure, we were looking for a place to have a late afternoon lunch after morning business meetings, and then get on the road home. Maybe a tasting bar was not the best choice since we're looking for lunch and iced tea rather than flights of cider. That said, no excuse for the very poor service from the girl at the counter who was visibly irritated at having to deal with us. I realize we tore her away from her busy schedule of checking her iPhone but, considering the restaurant was otherwise dead, it seemed the least we could do. Our group ordered five of the little pizzas as well as the (non-alcoholic) maple vanilla cider. The cider was OK. Maybe it's very good but not my thing so I'm not one to rate it. The pizzas were definitely what I would call "artisan" -- meaning that instead of keeping it simple by putting spicy chicken on a pizza, the buffalo chicken pizza had (what I think were) caramelized onions and blue cheese chunks on it. What it did not have was much chicken nor any "hot". So it was really a funky blue cheese pizza. With onions. So, maybe this place is rocking on a Friday night when the cider is flowing. However, we were definitely not feeling it on a Thursday afternoon with customer-service-less hostess, funky food and a $120+ check. read more

Seriously, Nine pin Cider is my newest favorite place. The ladies working today were so so sweet! I got to learn a lot about the ciders I tried 7 ciders and got 2 flights. Ginger is a favorite :) The raspberry and blueberry are really good too! The peach tea a collaboration with Short and Stout was super yummy! A unique one that I LOVED was the GOGO SHISO? Can you can this Nine Pin, it was delicious and I'm a tea fanatic, so matcha + New York apples+ fresh mandarin + matcha tea. YES to all of that!! I vote for cans and growlers, this would be a huge hit if it isn't already! I can't wait to bring the hubby and more friends and this place will be amazing as the weather warms up. Not to mention the inside is absolutely stunning. It pains me to give the place three stars, but I have to. The ciders are out of this world and the daily events along with the conception of the 26er challenge makes the place great. But there can be so much MORE. The potential for this place to really make a mark is there and leaves us scratching our head when we leave. The place is always crowded a but has a very small inside with not a lot of seating, especially in the winter. The food is also a big fat zero. Additionally, the price point is high. They need to think more like Druthers and less like Wollfs. We still love you guys though. read more

I'm gonna go ahead and say it... I'm OBSESSED with Nine Pin Cider. When I was living out of state it was a requirement that you had to bring Nine Pins when you came to visit me..or else like...don't even come. I've visited their location on Broadway quite a few times and I am also obsessed with going there. The taproom is somewhat small with a view of the cidery. I came on a saturday afternoon and there were quite a few people there when I arrived. By the time I left there wasn't a single seat to be had in the entire place. They had a generous variety of their own ciders on tap as well as plenty of local beers for those of us who don't like cider (who ARE you?). The original Nine Pin Cider isn't exactly a dry cider but its definitely not comparable to an Angry Orchard or a Strong Bow. I think it has the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. Some of the other flavors are notably less sweet. Nine Pin Ginger is a bit drier than the original. I've also had the cranberry and that is pretty tart (and fu**ing amazing). They have seasonal varieties as well as some that are produced year round. They're all great. You can find Nine Pin in local grocery and beer stores as well as at the cidery. read more

This stuff will make your head spin. In more ways than one. 1. These ciders are terroir! Made entirely from local apples, the cider makers are exploring dozens of varieties - blending them and fermenting them and flavoring them into slightly off-dry bubblies that are all NYS, refreshing and delicious. I like that they are investing in upstate NY, reviving the drink, and working with the farmers, adding a little science and doing something that is pure and delicious. And alcoholic. 2. Their signature ciders are being distributed throughout the state, in cans and bottles, but they continue to create limited releases that are well worth exploring. Their Signature cider has fine tiny bubbles, pleasantly sweet; the Belgian is smoother, sweeter; and the Ginger is wow and exotic, with real heat - delicious with salmon. I've enjoyed their limited releases: Glass Half Full (very fruity), NY Dry Hopped (tart, drier), Stayman Winesap (very light, a little spicy), and the Golden Russet (not as effervescent, a bit bitter, quirky). There's always more, so be a regular "26er" and try to try them all. The tasting room is small and funky, right by the cidery just off of downtown Albany in an area that is seeing growth, so there is foot traffic. What a perfect place to visit after eating 30+ varieties of macaroni and cheese at the Mac-n-Cheese Bowl. I'm glad someone in my group thought of it. Stuffed to the gills with dairy and smoked meats, I was really craving something crisp to wash all those tastes out. I was a tad worried the tasting room wasn't open when we arrived. It certainly didn't look open. Hell, it hardly looked like a tasting room! From outside, it looked like a warehouse office with almost no windows. But once you open the door, it's a small, homey space with pub height tables and probably three too few seats. I ordered a flight of four, and so did my wife, and by the time Mr. Bartender finished them, I think he mixed up what I ordered, or I forgot what I ordered, so forgive me if I'm a little vague on what I actually tasted. The ginger stood out, that's for sure. It was really spicy, so it encourages tiny sips. The vanilla bourbon was a stand out in a bad way. I could taste the alcohol more than the vanilla. The other two, I THINK, were Dry Hop and Signature, although I ordered Dry Hop and Belgian. Signature was their standard cider. Pretty sweet, a little too much for me. But my favorite of all was the Dry Hop, a less sweet version of the Signature. The bottles are a touch overpriced here if you've seen them elsewhere. But it's a fun, unique place. Nine Pin has some sweet as well as dry ciders, but as a general rule of thumb they tend to be on the dry side (similar to champagne). They have some seasonal ciders so be sure to stop by to try out some of those. They had a peach one that was so good! As for the stuff that is typically there, I like the blueberry or ginger. They have donuts from cider belly. I love cider belly donuts, however the ones I tried here were a little stale/dry. After a couple glasses of cider I guess I wouldn't be able tell the difference. In addition I think they only had two types of donuts, the more plain ones. They also started serving a sourdough pizza which are better than the city beer hall pizza but definitely not pizza from a pizzeria. You can also buy the ciders canned at the store and they also sell shirts and such. They do accept credit cards. I highly recommend the tasting room. It was super easy to find in Albany (the building was bright green with a big sign) and there was ample street parking along with parking spaces on the side of the building. The 3 cheese and garlic pizza is awesome! We tried the Blueberry, Strawberry, Ginger and Rosé in a 4 flight, they were all fantastic. I love this place for so many reasons, it's hard to know where to start. First of all it's vibe, the setting, the ambiance. I recently relocated from Manhattan and have been to Miami many times. This harkens to cool elements of both. Love the murals and the socially distanced set up is delightful, both inside and outside. The service is so friendly and helpful. None of this even gets into the product. I'm not really a cider drinker but tried some wonderful nine pins this summer and alas, there are several here that are even better. Will I convert from wine, never but this is a wonderful edition to alcohol consumption. And the food.... what we tried (pretzels with beer cheese) was so, so good. I can't come here frequently unless I want to gain a ton of weight. Oh but it's so cute, and relaxing and GOOD. The most important part of nine pin is that they employ people with I/DD. I work in this field and to see accommodations made to allow someone (Gary) to work in such a cool place, doing something he is good at and does well, with supports, brought tears to my eyes. People with I/DD have the lowest employment rates in the country. You guys are amazing and for this, I will always support. read more
