I called the store last week looking for Cascade 220 and Rowan Felted Tweed DK. I was told they carried one of them and that someone could help me find a substitute for the other. I appreciated the offer because while I've learned - and am still learning - about yarn substitution, it's still one of those tasks I'd rather get expert-level help with. So yesterday I swung by in-person to ask about the yarns. I made sure to paste ALL the yarn and needle info from my knitting instructions on my phone to show whoever was going to help me. There was a class going on and only one person was available to help (although she looked busy preparing something for the class while standing at a counter). I first asked for Cascade 220. The staffer wasn't sure of that particular line, so she asked for the weight. The yarn thickness category designated by the Craft Yarn Council (CYC) was the LAST thing on my mind. I'm not a vintage-only knitter or anything, and I dare call myself a prolific maker, but I'd say only half of the patterns I've used since I started knitting in the 1990s include the CYC's yarn weight standards' symbol: an illustrated yarn skein with its CYC category number. I'm more used to seeing it on actual yarn labels, so it's not my habit to note it when looking for yarn in-person. Also, no one asked me for the CYC weight when I called last week; we were all on the same wavelength during that call. So, I told the staffer the GRAM weight of the skein, and the conversation immediately shifted. As nice as this staffer was, she walked me over to a wall of yarn, showed me the store's copy of the CYC yarn weight standards chart, and started explaining how yarn weights are determined from lace to jumbo. I didn't bother interrupting her to say anything in my defense. When she first asked me for the yarn weight, I didn't ask "do you mean the physical mass of the yarn or the yarn thickness category?" But as someone representing Nimble Fingers, neither did she. And I do understand there may have been an additional disconnect. While at the wall pointing out certain yarns, the staffer mentioned that the store's yarns are organized by CYC weight. So who knows, right? Maybe she first asked me about the yarn weight to figure out where to send me on their yarn wall while I wandered the store with a near-empty tote bag big enough to smuggle home a sheep. Anyway... At first she didn't want to look at the typed yarn info on my phone for some reason. And without my reading glasses I rarely need while out 'n' about, I fumbled a bit reading my well-organized yarn notes - with highlighted needle sizes and skein amounts - out loud, which I'm sure added to me looking like a fish out of water. The staffer pointed out some yarns that might work as substitutions, and she suggested that I take a picture of them, which I did, so I could think more about my ultimate choice. But because yarn substitution is usually more nuanced than matching a thickness category and calling it a day, I was super disappointed that I clearly wasn't talking to whoever was on the phone last week. I'd been practicing my brioche stitch on acrylic stash yarn for a few months. I was SO ready to buy the yarn for my project. So that happened. The staffer was pleasant enough throughout the interaction, and even dropped a now-fashionable "y'all" on your Cousin Kerstin. But honestly, experiences like this can hit differently for some BIPOC makers, especially newer knitters navigating crafting spaces where assumptions about knowledge and belonging can feel loaded, like when my answer to this staffer's yarn weight question was apparently the "wrong" one. I also noticed an older 2019 customer photo on this Yelp page showing a much larger yarn selection, so I'm not sure if the store layout has changed or if there are additional areas I wasn't shown, but I was only shown a single wall of yarn during my visit. Between the awkward interaction that didn't match the informed help I got over the phone, the overall limited selection, and the fact that we took the bus out there specifically looking for yarn options I can't usually find at chain craft stores, I don't see myself making the trip again. read more

What up, my knitters! And hookers too, you get on in here! This place is great for us. Hey it's great for needlepointers too, but I'm gonna focus on knitting & crocheting because that's what I know and that's why I came here. This place beats the pants off your standard Hobby Lobby/Michael's fare. You want generic cheap acrylics, ok then stick with Hobby Lobby, but when you're ready to knit with something that will be prized and treasured and cuddled with, hit this place up. Their prices are very fair for the quality you get - I found a great machine-washable merino wool and a good set of bamboo circular needles for a super-secret project I'm working on for a special someone. The color variety is obviously not as varied as what you can find online but they have samples in every shade AND what shades they do have are cheaper than similar products online. Unless you need a SPECIFIC shade I'd check this place out first. The bamboo circular needles I got are also cheaper than the ones I saw on Amazon. The store is itty-bitty, but it's not a huge problem. They have little knitting and craftwork circles that meet in the store to work on projects together which seems neat - I'd totally join if I lived closer. But the yarn...my god the yarn. I need a few seconds to just talk about that. They have these cashmere skeins in the most gorgeous colors, imported from France, $25 apiece and despite that price tag I spent a good 5 minutes drooling and dreaming up projects I could make with it. It was so soft! And so colorful! I'm still thinking about that gorgeous, wonderful skein of yarn. read more

I am very excited to have discovered this hidden gem. When I first walked in I only saw needlepoint crafting supplies and two ladies sitting at a table knitting. I was quickly assured that the yarn room was in the back. I asked if they had crochet patterns and once again I was not disappointed. I shared that I was looking for a crochet pattern for a dress or top for myself. The lady who worked there went and rounded up single patterns, magazines and books for me to peruse. I found some really nice patterns and was able to purchase the quantity of yarn I needed. I also scored on the yarn as it was wet spun linen at 1/2 price. The yarn room is arranged by weight of yarn and has many lovely choices. There is also lots of crocheting supplies and books from which to choose. The ladies were very helpful and they oohed and aahed over my ravelry project page as we discussed my various pattern and yarn choices. That was probably my favorite part of this shopping excursion. read more

This place is located in a shopping center on Memorial and is a bit small - an issue if there are more than 5-6 people in the store at the same time. Once you walk in, you will see needlepoint patterns plastered on the walls for sale with price tags on them (and they're pricey, I might add!). You'll also see tables set up by the entrance for those who are working on needlepoint projects. There is a section in the middle left of the store where you can find all sorts of thread in any color you can imagine. There is also a back section that appeared very unorganized. It was so unorganized that I thought it was perhaps for employees only so I didn't venture back. As for the service, the ladies were very nice and helpful. I was there to look for cross stitching materials and patterns and they informed me of another store out in Spring that might have what I'm looking for. Also since I'm not quite familiar with this kind of needlepoint, one of the ladies showed me the project she was working on and explained to me how to use the patterns. I love this shop! Chris is so creative and has tremendous suggestions! There is a big selection of many needlepoint canvases and threads. There is a thread wall with hundreds of threads and thousands of colors! On the other side of the store is a huge selection of knitting yards, needles and patterns. I don't think the other reviewers were in the same shop as me! I've been here several times and I've found the staff distant and rude every time. Yesterday I walked in and there was a "sew in" in progress. Abut 12 people sat right by the door, so it was almost impossible to get in. No one wanted to move to make way, but I pushed my way through. Just a cursory "hello" from one person. The staff were more intent on chatting with the 'regulars'. I was looking for yarn - in the back of the store. I was there about 10 minutes - no one came to see if I was OK, did I need help. Actually I did need help and would probably have spent a sizeable amount, but no one seemed interested in my custom so I walked out empty handed, seemingly unnoticed. I will say, however, that they have a vast selection of speciality threads but last time I bought these here there were no prices marked so it could be a bit of a shock at checkout! If you need something special and you can deal with the rudeness of the staff, this is probably the place for you, but don't expect any help.
