I had no idea this store existed! I needed some additional fabric for an alteration and was told about UFC from the tailor I went to. He recommended them for their vast selections. When I arrived, I was grateful to see reserved parking spaces right in front. I was not eager to tackle Rice Village parking, so this convenience was a benefit for me. Upon walking in, I asked where I could find some potentially matching fabric and the salesgirl was so helpful! She pointed me in the right direction. Since I was looking for white fabric, she recommended I take the fabric outside in the sun to make sure it matches (can't trust white with the florescent lights!). That greatly helped, as the first fabric I thought would work ended up not matching at all once I took it in the sun. After a few tries, I found a fabric that was perfect! I needed ribbon for my sneakers and since I was in the area I decided to try this place. They have so much here, rows of ribbon, tons of fabrics, so much that it's like a maze to navigate. The service to me was great and everyone was nice. I even saw some young women doing a photoshoot inside, with permission of course. I found the perfect ribbon but realized at the register that the price was per yard not per bolt! It was totally worth it because I was satisfied with the look and quality. This store is ridiculously expensive! Not only that but they have poor customer service. I came here looking for material for my wedding..with that being said my mom and I were here for a couple hours. Every time we asked a question, one of the ladies seemed very annoyed. And I understand it was a lot of questions but that is what they are there for! She was very unhelpful too and disrespectful (I'm assuming she was the owner/manager). Tons of stuff, everywhere. I love this type of place because you find stuff no one else has. And usually it's at a great price. Well, this place is over price. I mean everything is priced well over retail. Granted a lot of fabrics that you have never seen anywhere. But I didn't want to pay $125.00 a yard for a Missoni knit knockoff. $15 a yard for flannel. Ribbons are gorgeous, I love ribbon grab bags, but a sandwich size ziploc bag with about (I'm guessing) 1 to 2 yards of ribbon bits for $12! Decorative buttons in abundance, I didn't want to look at the prices. If you have the money to spend, go. But I'm not in that kind of sewing. Just stopped by for the first time and what an amazing place. There are endless options of fabric, trimmings, ribbons, buttons, etc, all at different prices so you're sure to find something in budget. Could spend hours here just going through everything the store has. The workers were very friendly and helped with any questions I had as well as showing me their extensive selection of silk. I was in search of a very specific lace fabric for a custom piece. This was the first store that I went to and she had exactly what I was looking for, there is a huge variety of different things, and colors, but just like everyone else I will agree.... she is way overpriced. I needed a few other things besides the fabric I bought but I just couldn't bring myself to pay that much for them. Never have I seen prices as unreasonable as those at Universal Fabric Center. In the last 8 months I've been to over 40 fabric stores all over North America*, and this one is the worst. For example: - Poly cotton 1/4" gingham for $15.99/yd. Are you kidding me? That should be $5/yd, $7 at most. - Cotton shirtings for $49.99/yd. The same would be $25-35 a yard at High Fashion Fabrics (Louisiana St, Houston). I honestly do not know how this store survives considering the prices they're trying to charge, and the fact that there is at least one other viable option for fabrics in central Houston. Do not bother with this store. _____ * Honestly, at least 40, and almost all of them have been independent fabric stores (i.e. not chain stores like JoAnn). I've visited stores in CA, OR, AK, SD, MN, IL, MI, VT, ME, PA, NY (including almost every fabric store the New York fashion district), KY, SC, FL, AL, MS, LA, KS, and TX. As you will notice from the reviews here, this is not the place for those whose fabric needs can be easily satisfied by the selections at Hobby Lobby or Walmart. If what you're looking for is 200 quilters' weight prints of teddy bears and cowboy hats, this might not be for you. Likewise, if you're not interested in paying good money for quality fabrics, stay away. What you will find is an extensive selection of specialty silks, wool suiting, designer shirting, and notions to finish just about any piece you can imagine. I buy fabric all over the US and Europe and regularly go to the NYC garment center - Universal Fabric has one of the largest and finest selections of luxury fabrics I've seen - Her prices are high because her fabric is extremely high quality - High Fashion downtown has similarly high prices but quality is simply not the same. If you want the best fabric you aren't going to get it cheap - Her trim selection as well as interfacing collection are second to none. I do find that her petersham ribbon prices are on the higher end but NO ONE has a color and size range that extensive, with the exception of maybe of Hyman Hendler in NYC. The owner is definitely no nonsense but her years of experience make her advice invaluable. read more
