I had no idea this store existed! I needed some additional fabric for an alteration and was told about UFC from the tailor I went to. He recommended them for their vast selections. When I arrived, I was grateful to see reserved parking spaces right in front. I was not eager to tackle Rice Village parking, so this convenience was a benefit for me. Upon walking in, I asked where I could find some potentially matching fabric and the salesgirl was so helpful! She pointed me in the right direction. Since I was looking for white fabric, she recommended I take the fabric outside in the sun to make sure it matches (can't trust white with the florescent lights!). That greatly helped, as the first fabric I thought would work ended up not matching at all once I took it in the sun. After a few tries, I found a fabric that was perfect! If in need of fabric, I definitely recommend coming to Universal Fabric Center. Lots of options to choose from and great service! read more

I needed ribbon for my sneakers and since I was in the area I decided to try this place. They have so much here, rows of ribbon, tons of fabrics, so much that it's like a maze to navigate. The service to me was great and everyone was nice. I even saw some young women doing a photoshoot inside, with permission of course. I found the perfect ribbon but realized at the register that the price was per yard not per bolt! It was totally worth it because I was satisfied with the look and quality. Yes this place is pricy, but you'll definitely find what you need here. read more

Never knew they were here. I gave a 2 star because they have a ton of stuff, BUT... Here is the thing, the prices were so high they were offensive. I know little about some of the specialty materials and maybe that is the cost. I am talking about 100% cotton. I actually laughed out loud. I have bought fabric from many places and this was so expensive I was wondering at first if it was by the bolt. It wasn't. I did not buy a thing and won't be back. read more

I was in town for a fabric shopping trip with my best friend.... we came to this store expecting a great experience, as the reviews were enticing. what a disappointment. The store was crammed with bolts of old fabric, no organization, no help from the staff. It appeared that they bought old stock from other stores. The prices were quite high as well. Don't waste your time, go straight to Mood Fabrics!! read more

This store is ridiculously expensive! Not only that but they have poor customer service. I came here looking for material for my wedding..with that being said my mom and I were here for a couple hours. Every time we asked a question, one of the ladies seemed very annoyed. And I understand it was a lot of questions but that is what they are there for! She was very unhelpful too and disrespectful (I'm assuming she was the owner/manager). I still spent over $100 here because I didn't want to spend all that time there and not leave with anything. But at the end of the day, I'm a customer and should be given proper customer service. Will not be returning. read more

the store is very small, so overcrowded that my Claustrophobia kicked in three rows in. The prices are so high that I felt offended that they thought I was this stupid. Calico material that I can get elsewhere for $12.-$15 yd. was $59. yd tweed LOOK material $179. yd & button made of "fake"gold & plastic $12. each NO THANK YOU! read more

Tons of stuff, everywhere. I love this type of place because you find stuff no one else has. And usually it's at a great price. Well, this place is over price. I mean everything is priced well over retail. Granted a lot of fabrics that you have never seen anywhere. But I didn't want to pay $125.00 a yard for a Missoni knit knockoff. $15 a yard for flannel. Ribbons are gorgeous, I love ribbon grab bags, but a sandwich size ziploc bag with about (I'm guessing) 1 to 2 yards of ribbon bits for $12! Decorative buttons in abundance, I didn't want to look at the prices. If you have the money to spend, go. But I'm not in that kind of sewing. I want to look like a million in something I have sewn, not spend a million. read more

Universal Fabric Center - silk - Fabric Stores Near Me - Houston, Texas

Best button selection in Houston! Extensive selection of fabrics, trim, ribbons, etc. Family run, deep understanding of all fabrics.

Great selection and extremely helpful. I found everything I needed and then some. Definitely recommend over big box stores like Joann, where the apparel fabric selection is very slim. read more

Just stopped by for the first time and what an amazing place. There are endless options of fabric, trimmings, ribbons, buttons, etc, all at different prices so you're sure to find something in budget. Could spend hours here just going through everything the store has. The workers were very friendly and helped with any questions I had as well as showing me their extensive selection of silk. They have 800+ different colors of silk fabric, easily the best you'll find in town. Can't wait to go back for future projects. read more

Pretty Fabric! I went for inspiration, and was falling in love. I'll be back soon. I'm starting a collection

Very Rude. I came from out of town. I was looking for a piece of fabric and the owner was leaving In the middle of the day. He said to come back later. I told him it would be really quick and I knew exactly what I was looking for. Without asking me what I needed he said "We don't have it" and got in his car a drove away. It was a waste of my time to drive so far and to be turned away. read more

I couldn't name a better fabric store in the area. The selection of fabrics stretches all around the store and there is rarely anything I have not been able to find when in need. The staff are also very pleasant. read more

i really like this place, they've pretty much got everything under the sun. the owner/manger seems to be blunt and might come off offensive, but she's just trying to assist you. so i don't really agree with a lot of the reviews on here. she was really helpful base on my experiences. came in to look for some lace chiffon for a friend's wedding project. although i couldn't find what i was looking for, the owner directed me to another store that might have it. i felt like she genuine wanted to help and not make business of me, much appreciated. read more

HUGE selection of fabrics. You can find very unique and rare fabrics here. The service was great! I asked for a specific fabric and was guided directly towards the area. I'm not an expert in prices but from what I know, they were reasonable. read more

I was in search of a very specific lace fabric for a custom piece. This was the first store that I went to and she had exactly what I was looking for, there is a huge variety of different things, and colors, but just like everyone else I will agree.... she is way overpriced. I needed a few other things besides the fabric I bought but I just couldn't bring myself to pay that much for them. If you don't mind swapping out a price for convenience it's definitely a one stop shop but you're going to pay the price for not wanting to shop around.. it's also very organized. Which is a plus read more

Amazing unique fabric selections. Awesome ribbons and button. Extensive silk solid & printed.

Twi or Twe (I'm not sure how to spell her name) was so helpful! Gave me great advice on some fabrics to add to a dress I was customizing. Universal fabric center has a wide variety of fabrics and will be my new go to fabric store. I definitely recommend. read more

Universal is no joke. Ive been coming for some time. I have bought tons of high quality rayon velvet ribbons as embellishments for my creations. Never have I seen prices as unreasonable as those at Universal Fabric Center. In the last 8 months I've been to over 40 fabric stores all over North America*, and this one is the worst. For example: - Poly cotton 1/4" gingham for $15.99/yd. Are you kidding me? That should be $5/yd, $7 at most. - Cotton shirtings for $49.99/yd. The same would be $25-35 a yard at High Fashion Fabrics (Louisiana St, Houston). I honestly do not know how this store survives considering the prices they're trying to charge, and the fact that there is at least one other viable option for fabrics in central Houston. Do not bother with this store. _____ * Honestly, at least 40, and almost all of them have been independent fabric stores (i.e. not chain stores like JoAnn). I've visited stores in CA, OR, AK, SD, MN, IL, MI, VT, ME, PA, NY (including almost every fabric store the New York fashion district), KY, SC, FL, AL, MS, LA, KS, and TX. Also stores in British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec. read more

My mother has cancer and is wanting something nice to wear over her head once she loses her hair. I was in town visiting and ran across this fabric store. Wow! I love the selections they have here. An amazing selection of fabric and trimmings, unfortunately the prices are disproportionately high. In addition, the customer service is very unwelcoming. I wouldn't waste your time here, better to order online. read more

As you will notice from the reviews here, this is not the place for those whose fabric needs can be easily satisfied by the selections at Hobby Lobby or Walmart. If what you're looking for is 200 quilters' weight prints of teddy bears and cowboy hats, this might not be for you. Likewise, if you're not interested in paying good money for quality fabrics, stay away. What you will find is an extensive selection of specialty silks, wool suiting, designer shirting, and notions to finish just about any piece you can imagine. It is tightly packed and piled high but not difficult to navigate. I've found the attendants polite and helpful both in knowledge of the store and of fabric working generally. read more

I buy fabric all over the US and Europe and regularly go to the NYC garment center - Universal Fabric has one of the largest and finest selections of luxury fabrics I've seen - Her prices are high because her fabric is extremely high quality - High Fashion downtown has similarly high prices but quality is simply not the same. If you want the best fabric you aren't going to get it cheap - Her trim selection as well as interfacing collection are second to none. I do find that her petersham ribbon prices are on the higher end but NO ONE has a color and size range that extensive, with the exception of maybe of Hyman Hendler in NYC. The owner is definitely no nonsense but her years of experience make her advice invaluable. read more
