I have lived in Chester all of my life, but I moved to Florida for a short period of time and when I was there, I had a dog scratch my cornea! I went to multiple doctors in Florida...and I kept having a reoccurring issue that did not ever seem to heal. Who would think a scratch would last this long? When I came back home to New Jersey, I went to see Dr. Niki for my first time because I was having a "flare up." Turns out...I had reoccurring erosion of my cornea! No other doctor had told me this or even noticed this! She gave me medications that would help with my issue specifically. Then, in February, I scratched the same eye (very severely) with a stem of a flower. I was in such immense pain and could not use my eye at all. My Mom called the office, and honestly, they were not able to get me in, even if it was an emergency. My mom and I were very frustrated, so we went to the Urgent Care Center and then visited Dr. Niki the following day. Dr. Niki was GREAT - again! She and her staff understood the situation and took very good care of me as I was still in an immense amount of pain. I visited the office on a Thursday, and Dr. Niki informed me that she would be away for the weekend, so she gave me her personal phone number and texted me throughout the weekend checking in on my eye. I did have an issue with it on Saturday and even though she was going out of town later that day, she met me at her office to further evaluate it! An infection began to arise so she called my pharmacy directly and directed them as to what eye drops I needed. Overall, even though I was unable to get in on an emergency when we called, that was completely overridden by the fact that Dr. Niki herself came in on her day off to re-examine my eye. The whole experience was pretty traumatic but Dr. Niki kept me at ease the entire time - even up until this point! The office gets you in fairly quickly once you arrive, but I will admit you wait about 45 minutes to see the doctor. It is all worth it as she is VERY knowledgable. I just pickedup my new glasses and I can see great! I just wanted new lenses for frames I already had. They were the only place that did this; possibly because my frames were maybe 20 years old. While Dr. Niki herself has a sense of grace and a bedside manner as well as Dr. Russo, the same is not for the office staff. I have been customer interfacing in business for almost 35 years so have a bit of experience.The office staff could use some training in how they greet and treat patients as they do come off as non-caring with little compassion (Maria might be and exception). I am resilient but often think about the much older clientele and hope they are treated much better than me as this is the population I care about when there are questions and confusion, and I feel for them. From the time you walk in to the time you walk out, the staff is cold. I hope that this helps in training specific to personal engagement for the patients to the benefit of a practice that I do believe is a good one. Perhaps a smile or a simple hello, how were you today? For much of the older population, this might be the first outing in a week or two or even a month and possibly the only engagement they have with other people. A little compassion goes a long way and there is little of this from the staff as I have witnessed. I have seen staff in many practices building relationships with their patients at the front desk and staff level because they know many of these visits are all they look forward to but the same practice should apply to everyone. I have been taking my mom here for some time now and it hasn't improved at all. Wait times have been an hour or longer. The waiting room is empty and it still takes an hour before you are called back. The chairs remind me of a funeral home. There is no soft music playing in the background and all you hear are the receptionists talking about their personal lives. Waiting even 5 mins seems like an eternity. Dr Niki gets a great rating but staff and building gets a very bad rating. read more

Nikki Silvestein is one of the best in NJ. She was able to replace my dried up cataract. Most thorough exams.

I started to avoid going here because of the ridiculously long wait times, but I've realized it's worth it. I've come here for both vision exams and for an eye injury. When I injured my eyelid I was mistakenly diagnosed with a corneal abrasion at an Urgent Care, but when I felt the problem not healing I decided to go to Dr. Silverstein. She was able to diagnose that the problem was in fact something stuck under my eyelid instead, and gave me the proper treatments. The previously insanely long wait times seem to have greatly improved. I only had to wait a few minutes for my eyes to dilate and was taken in for my appointment exactly on time! read more

As a new patient, I came in with a specific eye problem. I left nearly 90 minutes later and I still have no idea what's wrong with my eye, or even if I should put contact lenses back in. Mostly, the doctor and her staff tried to sell me dry-eye products. When it became clear that I was more interested in what was wrong with my eye than the vast array of dry-eye products offered via her practice, the doctor passed me off to the assistant and left for the next patient. The assistant also seemed irritated that I needed more information. I was overwhelmed by the amount of product being thrown at me--eye-drops, eye-wash (which you can purchase for $28), dry-eye plugs, an assortment of contact lenses--with seemingly little interest in discussing a diagnosis. The practice also seems fixated on patient volume, as a staff of at least a dozen is there to assist one doctor. Tells you something. read more

Doctor Niki is great, she gets 5 stars. The office itself is run very poorly by the staff, and wait times are exceptionally long. I've been here quite a few times, even for routine appointments, and I've never been here less than 90 minutes. It's absolutely absurd. Not very well organized office staff. Young staff that would rather talk amongst themselves than do what they were hired to do. Have been back numerous times for contact lenses fitting. First the trail set was too low, then too high, then baby bear ...............Still trying for the fit/power after about 7 different combinations. Funny thing is that it is going full circle back to the powers that were prescribed to me from my last doc. (Office is also busy trying to see you "eye vitamins", block tear ducts for dry eye, and ice packs to wear on your eyes at night!!) Had to wait over an hour for my last visit. There are more acceptable choices out there. read more

This office shows a complete lack of respect for people's time. It is obvious that the doctor is trying to see at least half a dozen patients at the same time, resulting in long wait times. When you finally get to see the doctor, she is stressed out and the appointment feels rushed. The office seems to be set up to maximize revenue and profits rather than respect for patiences. I will find another doctor in the area for my future ophtamologist needs. read more

I recently went to this office for an eye exam. I wear both contacts and glasses, so I was looking to get a prescription for both since I haven't gotten new glasses for a number of years. I have VSP, so the exam was supposed to be covered with select providers, which this doctor was. (I didn't meet Dr. Niki that day either. It was some other doctor who seemed new.) I was not informed until I was in the middle of the exam that I would be charged an additional $50 for both prescriptions because only one is covered and I am a new patient. Way to make new patients feel welcome! I wasn't happy about it at the time, but what could I do? When I went to check out, I wasn't billed, so I thought they might have been gracious about it since I wasn't thrilled with the news. Wrong! I received an invoice in the mail, which I called and spoke to Maria, their billing person, about. I mentioned that I was unhappy about their $50 charge for new patients and I had already spent almost $500 there for both of our glasses. She basically argued with me and said that if I returned the prescription, they would waive the fee but that ALL doctors charge this and usually it's $150. I explained that I had never been charged this fee before and then she asked to speak to my previous doctor. Whatever happened to "the customer is always right?!" So once she got a bit snippy, I got a bit snippy, and I told her that I would pay the $50 but I would not be coming back. Then she said I actually owed $60 because they didn't charge me for the co-pay, which Maria obviously threw in for spite. My husband lost his job last year and had some major health issues plus I am expecting, so I really could have used a break. In any regard, I have never been treated so badly as a new customer, and it's really a shame because it seemed like a nice office. However, as a matter of principle, I will not be going back. And I will speak to my husband about finding a new eye doctor as well. There are plenty of others out there! read more

I had cataract surgery when I was 3 years old. Thankfully, my vision has been stable, throughout my life, up until 2 years ago. We recently moved to NJ and I was fortunate to select Dr. Niki Silverstein as my new Ophthalmologist. During my first office visit she spotted my problem and had me see another specialist to confirm her diagnosis. While she may be a good MD - her office is so busy that you have to wait well past your appointment date - then they move you to the hallway and you wait some more - then the Dr. comes in and zip bing bang boom she is gone - and her staff talks about the meds you need to take - but don't ask them much about how to admin the meds - they look at you like you have two heads - then you wait some more for Dr to rush in explain then rush out. I have worn glasses since I was 9 years old, and got Lasik a few years ago. I have never seen a better eye doctor than Dr Niki. She is thorough, professional, and knowledgeable. She also has extremely good beside manner as well as genuine care and respect for her patients. After my Lasik (which I wish I had done with Dr Niki), I had problems with night glare and eye fatigue. The doctor who performed the procedure was completely unhelpful, so I saw Dr Niki. She prescribed special yellow glasses as well has helped me understand how to speed the healing process. It worked! Immediately my eyes started feeling better and a few months later the problems were completely resolved. I will be taking my daughter to see Dr. Niki as soon as she's old enough -- she is an exceptional doctor with an amazing office and staff! read more

I was traveling and visitng friends in New Jersey and during dinner on a Friday night, my left eye started bothering me. By morning it was tearing and itchy. I knew that I had to see an ophthalmologist immediately as I would be traveling for another week. I have had eye infections before and know from past experience that you do not ignore these sorts of things. I called a few local offices from a random Google search and none had openings on a Saturday for me. One of the offices I called was Dr. Niki Silverstein's. Her receptionist told me that the doctor was not in that day, then asked if I could hold for a moment. She came back and asked if I could be in the office in an hour. "But you told me that the doctor was out today", I said. She said that the doctor was coming in to see me. Me. A stranger. Not an established patient. I couldn't believe it. I got to the office and the staff could not have been kinder or more professional. After filling out the necessary patient forms, I was quickly ushered into an exam room where a nurse ran some routine tests. I saw the doctor minutes later. She examined my eye and set my mind at ease that it was not an infection but likely just a small scratch. She prescribed medications just in case the scratch might trigger an infection and asked if I could come back in on Monday for a follow up. I was leaving New Jersey the next day and heading into Manhattan. What should I do? She told me that if I had ANY problem with my eye while in the city that I should go to New York Eye & Ear, open 24/7. Luckily, I did not need to go there but I was very happy to have the recommendation and referral. Regarding the medications that were prescribed, I went to the Rite-Aid pharmacy close to Dr. Silverstein's office and the pharmacist there was unable to fill one of the meds. She called around to multiple other pharmacies to find it and was unsuccessful. She called Dr. Silverstein to get an alternate medication and they were very helpful again. I am back in California and have seen my ophthalmologist here. My eye is just fine. Thank you Dr. Silverstein and thank you to your incredible staff.
