What a delightful surprise. I have been longing to try Georgian cuisine since I first learned about khachapuri on a travel show (don't ask--just order it, unless you're lactose-intolerant) - it is divine! It was such a great surprise to learn that Nikala is very close to my home and we celebrated Mother's Day lunch there. The food and drink was outstanding, creative, and lovingly prepared and purveyed by a lovely family. The husband is the chef, the wife runs the front of the house, and their wonderful son, Boris, waits tables---but each of them handle many jobs to keep the place going along with other talented and polite employees. We enjoyed everything we ordered and even had a popular bottled soda type drink which is, oddly, flavored by tarragon - but it is sweet, sparkly, and delicious. Other flavors include berberry or pear. There is a market next door to the restaurant that carries many of the dishes, which is very convenient because you are going to want to take some delicious things home to enjoy. I can't say enough about our experience - the ambience, food, decor were all stellar but the biggest star of this charming restaurant is the family and people that run it. Tried Georgian food for the first time and overall had a pretty good experience. Definitely a unique cuisine that you don't come across very often. For apps, the Elarji Balls with Walnut Sauce were disappointing though. Very bland, boring, and did not have much flavor at all. The Mountain Khinkali was also pretty bland. It had beef filling inside but really needed some kind of sauce or something to bring it together. The Adjaruli Cheese Khachapuri, on the other hand, was so good and one of the highlights of the meal. For mains, we got the lamb racks on a skewer. This was my personal favorite dish. Both the chicken mtsvadi and the beef mtsvadi were excellent. Everyone at the table loved them. The meats were definitely the highlight overall and gave similar vibes to Turkish grilled meats. Also worth noting: the chicken and beef are halal and clearly marked on the menu. The potato wedges and fries that came with the dishes were pretty average. So the appetizers and sides were underwhelming but the entrees definitely redeemed the experience. The Natakhari Georgian pear lemonade was way too sweet for me. Honestly tasted more like licorice and medicine than lemonade. Service was good, ambiance was cozy and casual, and they had a soccer game playing in the background which added to the atmosphere. It felt like a mix of date night couples and families dining out. Clean bathrooms and clean restaurant overall. Food is pretty pricey but since Georgian cuisine is not something you find everywhere, the premium pricing makes sense. Overall, I'd come back, especially to try more of their comfort foods. My first exposure to Georgian food and it was a delightful experience!! So many new foods to try. We tried the eggplant rolls which were a great first bite. It's served cold and the eggplant is rolled up around a delicious walnut filling. We got the Khinkali, so interesting how it's exactly like the Chinese xiaolongbao just a lot bigger. I tried the mushroom one which was really salty but delicious. My favorite thing we got was the Khachapuri - it's basically a giant pastry with cheese and butter. What's not to love. The bread was soft and light paired with the cheese and butter was delicious. I tried the chicken Mtsvadi which is BBQ. It was a decent amount of food. The chicken was tender. The grilled vegetables were really salty but well seasoned. I tried the pomegranate sauce which was quite tangy. Overall, thought the meal was absolutely delicious!! Just a bit salty. read more

Discovered another Georgian restaurant in Austin so I had to try it. The ambience is nice and really transports you out of Texas. We started off with the elargi balls which were kind of like arancini but more gritty and came with a delicious walnut sauce. Next came the Ostri beef stew and the khachapuri. The stew was very tasty with a tanginess to it and the khachapuri was the biggest one I've had across roughly 6 Georgian restaurants I've been to in NY and here. Finally, the khinkali dumplings came. They were deliciously seasoned and the dough was supple. I just wish they came out a little earlier in our meal because it was more light in flavor. The service was decent, though I felt they could've been friendlier to new customers as they seemed to be very warm with familiar faces. I'll be coming back! read more

This is genuinely a nice place to visit if you want to try Georgian cuisine. The interior is beautiful, with a pleasant ethnic style, and the atmosphere feels warm and inviting. The service was good overall, although there was a small mix-up with our order at the beginning. The staff were friendly and attentive. Almost everything we tried was very tasty fresh, well-prepared food that we enjoyed and finished with pleasure. Unfortunately, the one exception was the khachapuri. We didn't like it at all: neither the dough nor the cheese. The cheese tasted very cheap, and the dough was dry and not flavorful. I've had khachapuri in other places before, and it was noticeably better there. Aside from that, all the other dishes we tried were delicious, so the food experience overall was positive. The check is above average, and if you come as a group, they automatically add a service charge to the bill, which is something to keep in mind. My husband and I tried this Georgian food for the first time. It was absolutely delicious! The bread with Georgian cheese and egg was to die for. The beef stew was amazing! The moment I walked in and saw the tablecloths on the tables, I already felt my first wave of delight. Then came the warm welcome, the way we were seated, and the thoughtful introduction to the menu -- and my admiration kept growing. But when the khinkali arrived... that was it. Straight to the heart. It felt like Georgia. The khachapuri, , rolls, bread -- everything was absolutely delicious, beautifully made, and tasted so clean and authentic. And the service was truly exceptional. You can immediately feel that the people who work there genuinely love this place -- not a trace of anything fake. One young man spoke to us about the wine with such knowledge, care, and respect. A young woman told us about the food, the ingredients, the ovens, the paintings, the meaning behind the restaurant's name, and so much more. It was all done with such warmth and sincerity. At the same time, the service was incredibly delicate and natural. We were never interrupted unnecessarily, plates disappeared almost invisibly, and it felt like they noticed even a glance when it was time to refresh our drinks. Everything in this place feels so organic, thoughtful, and full of heart that from the very first visit, it became my favorite restaurant in the area. I came to Nikala with my family for Sunday lunch after hearing about it from the city of Round Rock's Instagram page. I've always been curious about Eastern European cuisine so we went to try it for the first time, and it was great! Out of the items we ordered, I recommend the khachapuri (adjaruli with cheese) and the mtsvadi tsibili (beef & pork Georgian shish-kbab). Nikala is also a child-friendly restaurant as we had no problem bringing our baby with a stroller. One of the waitresses even offered to open the door for us and did so. The bathrooms were also very clean, and even had a changing station and bidets. Will recommend this restaurant to my friends and family! read more

The food was genuinely good and we enjoyed trying authentic Georgian cuisine. However, the service made the experience frustrating enough that we likely won't return. Our waitress was unclear when taking our order -- when my dining companion asked whether a dish contained meat and decided to switch to a different one, she didn't confirm out loud that she was adding it as a second dish rather than replacing the first. So when two mains arrived for one person, we were confused. When we raised it, she became visibly frustrated, offered to show us her computer screen to prove what was ordered, and made us feel like we were the problem rather than working with us to find a solution. Shortly after, she left the restaurant entirely without informing our table. When we flagged another staff member, we were told she was "on break" -- but she walked back in from outside just as we were leaving. We were essentially unattended for the tail end of our meal. Again, the food itself was a highlight -- the dumplings were especially good. But the service experience was disappointing enough to overshadow it. read more

My friends and I always used to go to Teji's, and I heard that a new Georgian restaurant had arisen in its place. I had been wanting to go to a Georgian restaurant; several have opened in the greater Austin area lately and my hankering for the cheese-bread concoction khachapuri is strong. So we went to a Friday lunch to Nikala! The interior is beautiful and clean. The staff was super friendly and helpful and guided us with advice on what to order and then how to eat it! We started with eggplant rolls, a cold and refreshing starter, as well as some beef and pork khinkali (soup dumplings) and the star, a cheese khachapuri, a bread boat with baked cheese in the middle, topped with an egg yolk and butter. The waitress showed us how to mix it and tear pieces of the bread off to eat it. It was delicious and we polished off the round promptly. One friend got a Georgian beer and shared it with us, a lovely clean lager. For a main I had the lulu kebab (mixed ground pork and beef, similar to a kofta kebab) and, on the waitress' recommendation, the spicy Adjika sauce. I enjoyed it, and it was definitely the right sauce choice, I had a friend who went here the next day and got the same thing with the normal tomato sauce and thought it a bit basic. The owner came over and met us, and kindly comped me a dessert for my birthday, a pelamushi - a kind of grape juice and flour jelly with walnuts. It was interesting, not bad though not something I'd seek out. All in all we had a great experience and plan to return. Good food, ambience, and service! Also don't miss the market next door - Teji's was a restaurant and market all in one, they've separated the spaces now and Nikala is separate from the Eastern European import shop next door, Qvevri. read more

First of all, I want to say that this is a lovely place and I was finishing up my acupuncture appointment and was looking for some place to get to go order. But I would really love to come back here with my husband and eat there in person. He spent a summer backpacking in Eastern Europe so he's always loved each and European food. I want to also give kudos to the owner Kate. I had a misunderstanding with one of the dishes that I ordered because it didn't match the picture on the website and she offered to refund me after explaining in detail with the dish was which was Shkmeruli, but I didn't want to get anything free. I just wanted to kind of understand a little bit more and I regret thinking it was a small portion because it is so filling and so so delicious and really everything we got was delicious and we have leftovers! The beef stew was amazing hearty with some spice. The cornbread stuffed with cheese was also great and of course the Adjaruli W/Cheese was so good my picky 8 year old couldn't get enough of it. I am really looking forward to coming back and trying some of the wine that they have as well and I wish them much luck in the community. I'm not sure on the reviews that implied that they were discriminated against, I am a brown person and I felt that they were quite lovely. I think that it is a cultural difference in how communication is, but that's what makes the world a beautiful place. I recently dined at Nikala and enjoyed the Georgian barbecued chicken with baked potato. The chicken was tender and wonderfully seasoned. The spicy red sauce was a little too hot and exotic for my taste, but I didn't need a sauce for this chicken. The baked potato was also seasoned very well. I absolutely love this place! The khinkali is my favorite - so delicious, and their dessert is amazing every time. I also love to come for my lunch time and enjoy a cup of coffee and a khachapuri, spending a relaxing time there. I'm giving this place 1 star for service, not for the food. The food was delicious -- easily a 5-star meal. However, the service was terrible. Maybe it's because I'm from the Caribbean, where people are warm, friendly, and welcoming, but the waiter made us feel like we weren't wanted there. He didn't explain the menu, didn't acknowledge me when I said "thank you," and overall gave off a very rude attitude. If you don't want people from other cultures in your restaurant, just put it on the front door. I won't be offended -- I'll respect it and go somewhere else. Even with all that said, I still tipped 25%, because I understand people have bad days... but I honestly don't know why the service was so rude. 1 Star I was really disappointed with my experience here. The restaurant wasn't busy at all, yet we waited an unreasonable amount of time to be served and to receive our food. The server was inattentive and seemed uninterested, which made the long wait even more frustrating. When the food finally arrived, it was extremely overpriced for the portion size and quality I paid $21 for a single Lula Kebob on bread. To make matters worse, I was overcharged on my bill and ended up paying $30 when that was all I ordered?No apology, no effort to make things right. Outstanding Georgian food with a lovely decorated interior. All the dishes we tried we've never had before, but they were excellent. The waitress was terrific and the owner came out and showed us her new tablecloths that had Nikita, a character from mythology on them. Nikita was a young person in Georgia and at some point Picasso did a painting of Nikita and that was on the tablecloths. We had a wonderful time. The food was great and we will be back. read more

This restaurant took me by surprise. We decided to come here for our family dinner tonight and I was so impressed by the flavors and how fresh each dish tasted. It was very refreshing and the staff were very friendly. I have never had Georgian food before. But I will be coming here to Nikala again. Lovely place -- well-laid tables, nice ambiance, friendly waitstaff, clean restrooms. We weren't familiar with Georgian cuisine, but the menu was helpful, and the waitress supplied tidbits of extra info that helped us choose. The beef soup was extremely satisfying, and the terrific Georgian bread had a wonderful crust and chewy but tender texture. I loved the stuffed cheesy bread with spinach and scallions --- heavenly! We were all thrilled with how delicious the food was. We ordered kebabs and a stew. Everything was well seasoned and fresh. All of the ingredients tasted high quality and well balanced. We got the food to go, it held up very well. In fact my picky eater liked it so much that we didn't have enough. Next time we will dine in and be sure to order him his own dish!
