I am so glad I found this place! I have very thick, curly hair, and finding a stylist is usually difficult for me. Nicolo's is down the street from me and I'd heard good things, so booked an appt to give it a try. I had Giovanna and she is fantastic! I've been back several times now. A clean, full service salon, although a bit noisy at night,. Plenty of parking. I don't appreciate when I have to wait for my stylist for more than 5 minutes. If they are backed up, why can't the receptionist call me with a heads-up? My time is important, too. I would give it 5 stars if it weren't for this issue. read more

I got the most amazing haircut ever from Tatiana! It was my first air cut for curly hair, and it has totally changed the way I style and take care of my hair. She taught me so much when she was cutting and styling my hair. I'm thrilled with the result. More than a month out from my haircut and I still get compliments. Her cut and styling tips have allowed me to get more days between ways with my hair looking great. I didn't realize how many of the standard haircut practices are NOT designed for curly hair. Surprise at the checkout desk on both visits! I had a cut and color by Jill Richardson. And before she began she quoted me one price but then when I got to the front desk to pay they charged me 21 dollars more than the consultation quoted price. This happened to me at Nicolo on my first visit so that prompted me to ask how much before we got started, you can't go by the prices posted online I guess. I wonder who is getting the extra money, the salon or her? I paid cash last night and I wish I didn't because if they are not honest with the client...are they honest with the salon owners. I told the girl at the front desk that Jill quoted me a different price and the girl became unfriendly and said Jill was mistaken. I had to pay the front desk price, although I wanted to buy some Oribe products. Jill and the girl at the front desk made me feel so uncomfortable and foolish for pointing out the difference I had to just leave... yikes. I wonder if they make other clients feel this unwelcome. It is unfortunate I wanted to like this salon so much because Nicolo's son Nicolo did a fantastic job on my front steps and around my foundation in Saugus and I wanted to give the family more of my business. read more

Fantastic! First haircut since before the pandemic, and I LOVE it. I went in not knowing what I wanted, just asked Jill to help me feel pretty after a year of post-partum hair loss and COVID19 bangs. I really wanted to like this place. Nice facilities. loved the products they used. Redken color left my hair feeling good. I went twice, had appointments with Kelly. I was happy with my color (touched up my roots) although after the second time I noticed she missed some spots. I also got my curtain bangs trimmed and she basically cut them straight across. I gave her a second chance and went back, told her they were too blunt but they came out exactly the same. They apparently did a "treatment" during hair-washing that she never told me about and charged me $20 for and then asked if I wanted a blow dry- without knowing it was not included with a color. I only booked a color so I was not happy with the bill being double what i thought it would be. At the counter, they upsold products that the hairdresser never told me about and I had to wait 5+ minutes to pay behind chatty customers each time. Just things to be on the defense about, maybe your experience will be better. read more

I never turned back! She has taken care of my hair and knows how to execute my vision much better than I do, always. I would trust her to do my hair blindfolded! How has no one given Marisa a shoutout yes? She is so great! I came to Marisa after seeing the same stylist for a couple years. I'm usually on the nervous side working with a new person, but I immediately felt at ease -- she's super sweet, friendly, and just has a really good presence. Every time I go, both my cut and color come out so nice. I get tons of compliments on the color. She's so good about getting close enough to the root (it drives me crazy when people do highlights like an inch out!), but not too close to where it ever bleeds. She's given me some really multi dimensional looks but it always looks very natural and not like I'm trying to hard to change my hair. I also like that she gives really, truly listens to what you want, but gives her own input as well. Highly recommend! Aside from Marisa being a great stylist, Nicolo is a really nice salon. Everyone is very friendly, there's always coffee, tea, wine, and cookies/candy! It's the little things that really make a difference. Only thing to note is that tips must be in cash/check. read more

Going to Nicolo's is an experience; an event. It begins as you pull into their parking lot. How many salons in Melrose have their own parking lot? They have not just a few but at least 12 parking spots! The grounds are beautifully landscaped with flowers and shrubs. When you walk through the front door you are greeted by the receptionist and often times by Marco, who is warm and inviting. He is also the owner son. In the waiting area there are light snacks and tables to put your coffee or other complementary beverage and comfortable places to sit. There is also a television to keep you entertained, but I prefer to watch the magic happen in the salon. I enjoy observing the interactions between the team members (artists really) and their guests. Their conversations seem comfortable and casual, like a conversation between friends. The work areas are clean and tastefully appointed. Kelly fixes my hair when it's broken. She is talented, upbeat, and a ray of sunshine. Nicolo's is family owned, and there is obvious mutual respect between the owners and the team members. Not faked, or forced respect, but genuine. When it comes time to book another appointment, and to pay for your services, there is never a wait because there are two computers and registers. Nicolo's offers an outstanding salon experience. In my opinion, Nicolo's is the premiere salon in Melrose. It's a little bit of Newbury Street right here in Melrose. read more

I've been going to Nicolo Salon on and off for over 20 years now. I typically used to go to Nic Sr. and he does a great job. I took a long break over the pandemic and grew out my very short pixie cut. I didn't go to any hairdresser for almost 3 years. On August 24th I decided to get a haircut and go to Bethany rather than Nic since I wanted someone and something new from a pixie. I hadn't been to the salon in a few years and my hair was very, very long. It's straight and simple and I asked her to cut 2 inches all around. She washed my hair in cold water. Fine, I didn't say anything. She brushed out my hair and started cutting - or rather "pretend cutting." I could immediately tell she was barely, and I mean barely, trimming the split ends. We were no where near the 2 inches I had requested. It took her literally 5 minutes to cut and about 15 to dry them out. When my hair was all dry, she said how healthy it looked. They literally looked identical as to when I walked in. When I asked "how's the back look?" She didn't bother to grab the mirror but just said it looked "healthy." When I got up, there was almost no hair on the ground. I'm not sure if this is a strategy to get people to go back more often, but this was $68 down the drain, literally. Had the most wonderful experience yesterday at Nicolo Salon. My friend took me to get my hair blown out before my bridal shower. As soon as they staff heard it was a special day for me, they went above and beyond. Not only did my hair turn out amazing thanks to Elena, but we also got wine, free samples and my friend a complementary blow out. After trying a few different salons in the Somerville area and finding myself underwhelmed, I asked my colleague for a recommendation. She told me that her whole family has been going to Nicolo Salon for years, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I called in the late morning last Wednesday to ask if they could squeeze me in that same evening for a cut and partial foils. They were incredibly accommodating and scheduled me for a cut with Christine. Christine did an amazing job on my cut and highlights, and I really appreciated her attentiveness. I really felt like I got the full salon experience that I'd been missing at other salons! Christine was fun to talk to and she offered me snacks, beverages, and magazines. Went to Nicolo's tonight for an impromptu hair cut, and I was very impressed with the experience. The space is a beautiful converted Victorian house with a lot of character, and good parking. Kim knew exactly what I wanted and did a great job. I usually have stylists who are afraid to cut my hair too short or don't quite understand what I want, but Kim worked really well with the idea I gave her, I got a great cut. The hours are much more flexible than other salons, the staff is great and prices are competitive. I like shopping local so I will definitely go back. I appreciate that they took me on short notice. This salon is lovely inside. I had a very nice stylist who did a fairly good job - color was good and haircut was fine. I arrived a few minutes early for my appt. so I fully expected that I would have to wait but I ended up waiting nearly 40 minutes. I understand that things happen and sometimes a stylist has no control over her previous client being late which is going throw off the rest of her day - but jeez, tell me you're running late so I can decide whether to reschedule or go run an errand. . read more

And frankly, one of the reasons I went to the barber was because all the good hair salons in the city were so expensive! but since I've moved to Melrose, I thought I'd try a local salon, and am I ever glad I did. Jill has been a fantastic stylist for me, and she's worked so well with my curly hair that I want to have straight occasionally. She also helped transform my 16-year-old niece to an all-grown-up look! I'm so grateful to have Jill and her expertise with color and cut in my life! And if you get the chance to book on a day where Bonita will do your shampoo, you won't regret it!
