My husband and I decided to stay in Estes Park on a Saturday night (first weekend of February) to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and after searching for places to stay within our budget, I found Nicky's Resort online. Luckily they had availability, so I booked our room the night before on their website. My husband and I have passed this place a number of times going up to Rocky Mountain National Park so we thought we would give this place a try. When we arrived, there was no one other guests at the registration counter, so checking in was very fast. Stacy at the front desk was friendly and gave us some helpful information. We got the keys to our room and I was surprised to realize that the "front door" was a sliding glass door. That was a first for us and when we walked up to the room, I was worried about people being able to see in, but it is tinted and there are vertical blinds that you can pull over it so that made me feel a lot better. We booked a regular King Hotel room; it was small, but cozy and very clean! It almost felt like we were staying in a little cabin. We had a mini fridge, microwave and little coffee maker in our room which was cool. The bathroom included toiletries and a hairdryer and was very clean too! The shower had great water pressure and got warm/hot very quickly. Unfortunately, the TV in our room needed a PIN to access it and we had no idea what it was and the front office was closed already, but it wasn't a big deal. The bed was comfortable and the heater worked well. A little too well. It's a wall unit and I was sleeping on the side of the bed right next to it, so I woke up a few times really hot! It made it hard to get good sleep. I would recommend maybe doubling up on blankets and not setting the heater too high during the winter. Check in is after 2pm and check out is at 10am, but when we asked about a later check out that morning, they let us check out around 11am. They do not allow smoking in the rooms, outside only. I didn't see a vending machine on the property so I would highly recommend bringing your own snacks and drinks with you or you can go to the restaurant where they sell some of those things. Parking is free and so is the WIFI. The office closes at 9pm during the summer, 7pm during the winter weekdays, and 8pm during the winter weekends so if you need anything, go in there before they close, as there are no phones in the rooms. The motel is not a bad place to stay if you are looking for a casual getaway and it is super close to Rocky Mountain National Park, which is perfect if you are heading there during your trip. Their steakhouse across the parking lot is a lovely and charming place to stop for dinner too. My husband and I both had the prime rib and it was one of the best we've had! I wouldn't mind staying at Nicky's again, maybe next time during the summer so we can see the river flow through, but it was cool to see it frozen too. There really isn't a bad view from this place either :)

We were on the 2nd floor (same as street level actually - you would go down go down floor to reach the ground floor rooms). I liked having no one above us. The room was large, with a mini fridge and a microwave, and little gas fireplace. Bed was comfy. There was also a live seat, chair and table. The room opened onto a shared balcony overlooking the lawn and the Fall River. The sound of the river is so great! The only drawback to the room was vary low water pressure in the bathroom. The whole property is non-smoking and I really appreciated that. The grounds are incredible. You can't hear any traffic - just the sound of the river. There is plenty of seating on the lawn so you can just relax and enjoy. No children allowed which also boosts the peace and tranquility. The hot tub room seems very new. It too faces the river so you can soak the sore muscles from hiking and still have a great view. I absolutely loved that they offer free s'mores kits in the lobby. Every night, they come out and light the fire pit, and we spent time by the fire each night! It was a nice way to meet other guests and such a treat to have the s'mored. It's a great, thoughtful extra that just puts them a notch above others.

Close to downtown, beautiful nature sounds, easy to find, lovely room with a view to the river. We didn't really get any customer service experience since they give you a code for your door instead of a key card. Can't comment too much on that. The room was great, it had cups for water and coffee, plates, cutlery, a cutting board, and toaster, a fridge and well equipped for a short stay where you can bring your own snacks/food. It's a beautiful setting, but several issues impacted my experience. First, I felt the advertising was a bit misleading. I saw a pool listed on Orbitz, but I discovered there isn't a pool anywhere on the property. Instead, there are two above-ground hot tubs. I went to the one on the second level, but I found climbing the narrow metal stairs with wet feet to be a bit dangerous. I also noticed that the rooms are slightly dated and showing their age. In my room, the curtain rod was actually falling out of the wall, which told me they need to keep up with better maintenance. You should also know there is no lobby or front desk here; I just received a code via text message and entered it to get into my room. While efficient, it felt a bit impersonal. My biggest complaint, however, was the construction noise. I didn't realize they are currently expanding the inn and building two new buildings on the same lot. Unfortunately, my room was right next to the construction site, and I had to deal with loud noise all morning. I think this place has a lot of potential once the upgrades are done, but between the maintenance issues and the noise, I didn't find it to be the relaxing getaway I was hoping for.

The hotel is rich in history. Everywhere you look there is charm. We stayed in the "Cowboy Attic Suite". My mom immediately had an "experience". I heard a grandfather clock chime throughout our stay. I never saw one and forgot to ask where it was located. I love old clocks. My aunt had her own experience that woke her from her sleep. Everyone we encountered was nice and we appreciated the cander as we asked for their stories/experiences there. The bad....for what we paid, it was not worth it. The floor feels dirty. It is as though they have not thought to clean the carpets in quite some time. Under the bed is a nice layer of dust. The whole hotel could use a moist cloth and a good wipe down. The dust in the display cases throughout the hotel is obvious and off putting. We met Hannibal. Wish we would have booked the seance, but alas, we ran out of time. He was a hoot to talk to.

As everyone else has mentioned, the construction is a huge turn off! And absolutely no mention of it when you're booking your room. In addition, when I booked my room, I did not realize that I was booking it in the Aspire building. I thought that the Stanley hotel was one big hotel. I did not realize that there were different newer buildings. In the end, though, I am very happy that we are in the other building as what is being done at the original hotel is really offputting. The staff, however, were very nice and accommodating. Besides all of the construction, they have tours going on an hourly basis that are open to anyone who passes by, for a cost of $25+, of course and no discount for hotel guests. Those tourists who have not spent several hundred per night are all over the main lobby, dirtying up the carpet, wandering around the property with screaming kids, going up and down the stairwells, and elevator if it's running, just taking up space that should be reserved for guests!! Especially guests who are paying dearly for what they thought would be an old, elegant hotel experience. It is definitely not an elegant hotel anymore. It tries, a little, but is obviously too interested in making money off of tours rather than providing an exceptional experience for guests. I had envisioned myself sitting in that grand lobby reading a book with some tea. Impossible and wouldn't be pleasant if it was possible. Our room in the Aspire was nice, and the lobby, spa and gym facilities and the outdoor pool are very attractive and peaceful. But, again, some things just don't make sense. For instance, the lovely fireplace they have in the lobby is shut down at 8 PM when the desk agent goes home. I have been looking forward all day, to just sitting by that fireplace with a nice drink and reading my book. Seems like a normal expectation for a higher end hotel in the Colorado mountains. The pool area is nice, as is the steam room and gym. There are plenty of towels, tea and coffee and nice amenities. They need little tables out by the lounge chairs on the pool deck for people to set their drinks and things on instead of the ground. The beds, linens and pillows were great. There is no mini fridge in the room, no additional amenities in bathroom like Q tips, makeup remover wipes, etc... normal amenities offered in hotels of this price range and expected caliber. There is no full length mirror in the bedroom or in the bathroom and the mirror in the bathroom is so dimly lit it is impossible for a woman to see to put makeup on and no other mirror in the bedroom. They don't make up your room or refresh towels unless you specifically request it. I understand not changing out towels for ecological reasons, but when you are paying these kind of prices for a hotel room, someone should come in and make up your bed every day and tidy up and take the trash out. We're just one night in to our stay so we shall see how the rest goes. It has been pretty disappointing though.
